Topologies of continuity for Carathéodory parabolic PDEs from a dynamical perspective

Systems of non-autonomous parabolic partial differential equations over a bounded domain with nonlinear term of Carathéodory type are considered. Appropriate topologies on sets of Lipschitz Carathéodory maps are defined in order to have a continuous dependence of the mild solutions with respect to the variation of both the nonlinear term and the initial conditions, under different assumptions on the bound-maps of the nonlinearities.

New notion of nonuniform exponential dichotomy with applications to the theory of pullback and forward attractors

In this work we study nonuniform exponential dichotomies and existence of pullback and forward attractors for evolution processes associated to nonautonomous differential equations. We define a new concept of nonuniform exponential dichotomy, for which we provide several examples, study the relation with the standard notion, and establish a robustness under perturbations. We provide a dynamical interpretation of admissibility pairs related with exponential dichotomies to obtain existence of pullback and forward attractors. We apply these abstract results for ordinary and parabolic differential equations.

Critical transitions in piecewise uniformly continuous concave quadratic ordinary differential equations

A critical transition for a system modelled by a concave quadratic scalar ordinary differential equation occurs when a small variation of the coefficients changes dramatically the dynamics, from the existence of an attractor-repeller pair of hyperbolic solutions to the lack of bounded solutions. In this paper, a tool to analyze this phenomenon for asymptotically nonautonomous ODEs with bounded uniformly continuous or bounded piecewise uniformly continuous coefficients is described, and used to determine the occurrence of critical transitions for certain parametric equations. Some numerical experiments contribute to clarify the applicability of this tool.

Rate-induced tipping and saddle-node bifurcation for a class of quadratic differential equations with nonautonomous asymptotic dynamics

An in-depth analysis of nonautonomous bifurcations of saddle-node type for scalar differential equations $x'=-x^2+q(t)\,x+p(t)$, where $q\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $p\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are bounded and uniformly continuous, is fundamental to explain the absence or occurrence of rate-induced tipping for the differential equation $y' =(y-(2/π)\arctan(ct))^2+p(t)$ as the rate $c$ varies on $[0,\infty)$. A classical attractor-repeller pair, whose existence for $c=0$ is assumed, may persist for any $c>0$, or disappear for a certain critical rate $c=c_0$, giving rise to rate-induced tipping. A suitable example demonstrates that one can have more than one critical rate, and the existence of the classical attractor-repeller pair may return when $c$ increases.

Non-autonomous scalar linear-dissipative and purely dissipative parabolic PDEs over a compact base flow

In this paper a family of non-autonomous scalar parabolic PDEs over a general compact and connected flow is considered. The existence or not of a neighbourhood of zero where the problems are linear has an influence on the methods used and on the dynamics of the induced skew-product semiflow. That is why two cases are distinguished: linear-dissipative and purely dissipative problems. In both cases, the structure of the global and pullback attractors is studied using principal spectral theory. Besides, in the purely dissipative setting, a simple condition is given, involving both the underlying linear dynamics and some properties of the nonlinear term, to determine the nontrivial sections of the attractor.

Monotone skew-product semiflows for Carathéodory differential equations and applications

The first part of the paper is devoted to studying the continuous dependence of the solutions of Carathéodory constant delay differential equations where the vector fields satisfy classical cooperative conditions. As a consequence, when the set of considered vector fields is invariant with respect to the time-translation map, the continuity of the respective induced skew-product semiflows is obtained. These results are important for the study of the long-term behavior of the trajectories. In particular, the construction of semicontinuous semiequilibria and equilibria is extended to the context of ordinary and delay Carathéodory differential equations. Under appropriate assumptions of sublinearity, the existence of a unique continuous equilibrium, whose graph coincides with the pullback attractor for the evolution processes, is shown. The conditions under which such a solution is the forward attractor of the considered problem are outlined. Two examples of application of the developed tools are also provided.

Asymptotic behavior of solutions of nonautonomous neutral dynamical systems

This paper studies the dynamics of families of monotone nonautonomous neutral functional differential equations with nonautonomous operator, of great importance for their applications to the study of the long-term behavior of the trajectories of problems described by this kind of equations, such us compartmental systems and neural networks among many others. Precisely, more general admissible initial conditions are included in the study to show that the solutions are asymptotically of the same type as the coefficients of the neutral and non-neutral part.

Forwards attraction properties in scalar non-autonomous linear dissipative parabolic PDEs. The case of null upper lyapunov exponent

As it is well-known, the forwards and pullback dynamics are in general unrelated. In this paper we present an in-depth study of whether the pullback attractor is also a forwards attractor for the processes involved with the skew-product semiflow induced by a family of scalar non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations which are linear in a neighbourhood of zero and have null upper Lyapunov exponent. Besides, the notion of Li-Yorke chaotic pullback attractor for a process is introduced, and we prove that this chaotic behaviour might occur for almost all the processes. When the problems are additionally sublinear, more cases of forwards attraction are found, which had not been previously considered even in the case of linear-dissipative ODEs.

Existence of global attractor for a nonautonomous state-dependent delay differential equation of neuronal type

The analysis of the long-term behavior of the mathematical model of a neural network constitutes a suitable framework to develop new tools for the dynamical description of nonautonomous state-dependent delay equations (SDDEs). The concept of global attractor is given, and some results which establish properties ensuring its existence and providing a description of its shape, are proved. Conditions for the exponential stability of the global attractor are also studied. Some properties of comparison of solutions constitute a key in the proof of the main results, introducing methods of monotonicity in the dynamical analysis of nonautonomous SDDEs. Numerical simulations of some illustrative models show the applicability of the theory.

Li-Yorke chaos in nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation patterns - I

We analyze the characteristics of the global attractor of a type of dissipative nonautonomous dynamical systems in terms of the Sacker and Sell spectrum of its linear part. The model gives rise to a pattern of nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation which can be understood as a generalization of the classical autonomous one. We pay special attention to the dynamics at the bifurcation point, showing the possibility of occurrence of Li-Yorke chaos in the corresponding attractor and hence of a high degree of unpredictability.

Topologies of continuity for Carathéodory delay differential equations with applications in non-autonomous dynamics

We study some already introduced and some new strong and weak topologies of integral type to provide continuous dependence on continuous initial data for the solutions of non-autonomous Carathéodory delay differential equations. As a consequence, we obtain new families of continuous skew-product semiflows generated by delay differential equations whose vector fields belong to such metric topological vector spaces of Lipschitz Carathéodory functions. Sufficient conditions for the equivalence of all or some of the considered strong or weak topologies are also given. Finally, we also provide results of continuous dependence of the solutions as well as of continuity of the skew-product semiflows generated by Carathéodory delay differential equations when the considered phase space is a Sobolev space.

Non-Atkinson perturbations of nonautonomous linear hamiltonian systems: exponential dichotomy and nonoscillation

We analyze the presence of exponential dichotomy (ED) and of global existence of Weyl functions $M^\pm$ for one-parametric families of finite-dimensional nonautonomous linear Hamiltonian systems defined along the orbits of a compact metric space, which are perturbed from an initial one in a direction which does not satisfy the classical Atkinson condition: either they do not have ED for any value of the parameter; or they have it for at least all the nonreal values, in which case the Weyl functions exist and are Herglotz. When the parameter varies in the real line, and if the unperturbed family satisfies the properties of exponential dichotomy and global existence of $M^+$, then these two properties persist in a neighborhood of 0 which agrees either with the whole real line or with an open negative half-line; and in this last case, the ED fails at the right end value. The properties of ED and of global existence of $M^+$ are fundamental to guarantee the solvability of classical minimization problems given by linear-quadratic control processes.

Lyapunov exponents and Oseledets decomposition in random dynamical systems generated by systems of delay differential equations

Linear skew-product semidynamical systems generated by random systems of delay differential equations are considered, both on a space of continuous functions as~well as on a space of $p$-summable functions. The main result states that in both cases, the Lyapunov exponents are identical, and that the Oseledets decompositions are related by natural embeddings.

Persistence in nonautonomous quasimonotone parabolic partial functional differential equations with delay

This paper provides a dynamical frame to study non-autonomous parabolic partial differential equations with finite delay. Assuming monotonicity of the linearized semiflow, conditions for the existence of a continuous separation of type II over a minimal set are given. Then, practical criteria for the uniform or strict persistence of the systems above a minimal set are obtained.

Weak topologies for Carathéodory differential equations. Continuous dependence, exponential Dichotomy and attractors

We introduce new weak topologies and spaces of Carathéodory functions where the solutions of the ordinary differential equations depend continuously on the initial data and vector fields. The induced local skew-product flow is proved to be continuous, and a notion of linearized skew-product flow is provided. Two applications are shown. First, the propagation of the exponential dichotomy over the trajectories of the linearized skew-product flow and the structure of the dichotomy or Sacker-Sell spectrum. Second, how particular bounded absorbing sets for the process defined by a Carathéodory vector field $f$ provide bounded pullback attractors for the processes with vector fields in the alpha-limit set, the omega-limit set or the whole hull of $f$. Conditions for the existence of a pullback or a global attractor for the skew-product semiflow, as well as application examples are also given.

Asymptotic behaviour for a class of non-monotone delay differential systems with applications

The paper concerns a class of $n$-dimensional non-autonomous delay differential equations obtained by adding a non-monotone delayed perturbation to a linear homogeneous cooperative system of ordinary differential equations. This family covers a wide set of models used in structured population dynamics. By exploiting the stability and the monotone character of the linear ODE, we establish sufficient conditions for both the extinction of all the populations and the permanence of the system. In the case of DDEs with autonomous coefficients (but possible time-varying delays), sharp results are obtained, even in the case of a reducible community matrix. As a sub-product, our results improve some criteria for autonomous systems published in recent literature. As an important illustration, the extinction, persistence and permanence of a non-autonomous Nicholson system with patch structure and multiple time-dependent delays are analysed.

Global an cocycle atractor for non-utonomous reaction-difussion equations . The case of null upper Lyapunov exponente

In this paper we obtain a detailed description of the global and cocycle attractors for the skew-product semiflows induced by the mild solutions of a family of scalar linear-dissipative parabolic problems over a minimal and uniquely ergodic flow. We consider the case of null upper Lyapunov exponent for the linear part of the problem. Then, two different types of attractors can appear, depending on whether the linear equations have a bounded or an unbounded associated real cocycle. In the first case (e.g.~in periodic equations), the structure of the attractor is simple, whereas in the second case (which occurs in aperiodic equations), the attractor is a pinched set with a complicated structure. We describe situations when the attractor is chaotic in measure in the sense of Li-Yorke. Besides, we obtain a non-autonomous discontinuous pitchfork bifurcation scenario for concave equations, applicable for instance to a linear-dissipative version of the Chafee-Infante equation.

Is uniform persisitence a robust property in almost periodic models? A well-behaved family: almost periodic Nicholson systems

Using techniques of non-autonomous dynamical systems, we completely characterize the persistence properties of an almost periodic Nicholson system in terms of some numerically computable exponents. Although similar results hold for a class of cooperative and sublinear models, in the general non-autonomous setting one has to consider persistence as a collective property of the family of systems over the hull: the reason is that uniform persistence is not a robust property in models given by almost periodic differential equations.
