Electronic structure of monolayer antimonene nanoribbons under out-of-plane and transverse bias

A systematic study of the electronic properties of single layer Sb (antimonene) nanoribbons is presented. By using a 6-orbital tight-binding Hamiltonian, we study the electronic band structure of finite ribbons with zigzag or armchair termination. We show that there is good agreement between ab initio calculations and the tight-binding model. We study how the size of the gap can be controlled by applying an external bias potential. An electric field applied perpendicular to the antimonene layer is found to increase the band gap, while a transverse bias potential leads to a position dependent reduction of the band gap. Both kinds of bias potential break inversion symmetry of the crystal. This, together with the strong intrinsic spin-orbit coupling of antimonene, leads to spin-splitting of the valence band states.

Dielectric screening and plasmons in AA-stacked bilayer graphene

The screening properties and collective excitations (plasmons) in AA-stacked bilayer graphene are studied within the random phase approximation (RPA). Whereas long lived plasmons in single layer graphene and in AB-stacked bilayer graphene can exist only in doped samples, we find that coherent plasmons can disperse in AA-stacked bilayer graphene {\it even in the absence of doping}. Moreover, we show that the characteristic low energy dispersion relation is unaffected by changes in the number of carriers, unless the chemical potential of the doped sample exceeds the inter-layer hopping energy. We further consider the effect of an external electric field applied perpendicular to the layers, and show how the dispersion of the modes can be tuned by the application of a gate voltage.

Renormalization group approach to anisotropic superconductivity

The superconducting instability of the Fermi liquid state is investigated by considering anisotropic electron-boson couplings. Both electron-electron interactions and anisotropic electron-boson couplings are treated with a renormalization-group method that takes into account retardation effects. Considering a non-interacting circular Fermi surface, we find analytical solutions for the flow equations and derive a set of generalized Eliashberg equations. Electron-boson couplings with different momentum dependences are studied, and we find superconducting instabilities of the metallic state with competition between order parameters of different symmetries. Numerical solutions for some couplings are given to illustrate the frequency dependence of the vertices at different coupling regimes.

Interplay of metamagnetic and structural transitions in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$

Metamagnetism in layered ruthenates has been interpreted as a novel kind of quantum critical behavior. In an external magnetic field, Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ undergoes a metamagnetic transition accompanied by a pronounced magnetostriction effect. In this paper we present a mean-field study for a microscopic model that naturally reproduces the key features of this system. The phase diagram calculated is equivalent to the experimental $T$-$x$ phase diagram. The presented model also gives a good basis to discuss the critical metamagnetic behavior measured in the system.

Deformation of anisotropic Fermi surfaces due to electron-electron interactions

We analyze the deformations of the Fermi surface induced by electron-electron interactions in anisotropic two dimensional systems. We use perturbation theory to treat, on the same footing, the regular and singular regions of the Fermi surface. It is shown that, even for weak local coupling, the self-energy presents a nontrivial behavior showing momentum dependence and interplay with the Fermi surface shape. Our scheme gives simple analytical expressions based on local features of the Fermi surface.
