An equivalence between pseudo-holomorphic embeddings into almost-complex Euclidean space and CR regular embeddings into complex space

We show that a pseudo-holomorphic embedding of an almost-complex $2n$-manifold into almost-complex $(2n + 2)$-Euclidean space exists if and only if there is a CR regular embedding of the $2n$-manifold into complex $(n + 1)$-space. We remark that the fundamental group does not place any restriction on the existence of either kind of embedding when $n$ is at least three. We give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of characteristic classes for a closed almost-complex 6-manifold to admit a pseudo-holomorphic embedding into $\R^8$ equipped with an almost-complex structure that need not be integrable.

Topology change and selection rules for high-dimensional $\Spin(1, n)_0$-Lorentzian cobordisms

We study necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Lorentzian and weak Lorentzian cobordisms between closed smooth manifolds of arbitrary dimension such that the structure group of the frame bundle of the cobordism is $\Spin(1, n)_0$. This extends a result of Gibbons-Hawking on $\Sl(2, \C)$-Lorentzian cobordisms between 3-manifolds and results of Reinhart and Sorkin on the existence of Lorentzian cobordisms. We compute the $\Spin(1, n)_0$-Lorentzian cobordism group for several dimensions. Restrictions on the gravitational kink numbers of $\Spin(1, n)_0$-weak Lorentzian cobordisms are obtained.

Some examples of vanishing Yamabe invariant and minimal volume, and collapsing of inequivalent smoothings and PL-structures

In this short note, exploits of constructions of $\mathcal{F}$-structures coupled with technology developed by Cheeger-Gromov and Paternain-Petean are seen to yield a procedure to compute minimal entropy, minimal volume, Yamabe invariant and to study collapsing with bounded sectional curvature on inequivalent smooth structures and inequivalent PL-structures within a fixed homeomorphism class. We compute these fundamental Riemannian invariants for every high-dimensional smooth manifold on the homeomorphism class of any smooth manifold that admits a Riemannian metric of zero sectional curvature. This includes all exotic and all fake tori of dimension greater than four. We observe that the minimal volume is not an invariant of the smooth structures, yet the Yamabe invariant does discern the standard smooth structure from all the others. We also observe that the fundamental group places no restriction on the vanishing of the minimal volume and collapse with bounded sectional curvature for high-dimensional manifolds.

A note on collapse, entropy, and vanishing of the Yamabe invariant of symplectic 4-manifolds

We make use of $\mathcal{F}$-structures and technology developed by Paternain - Petean to compute minimal entropy, minimal volume, and Yamabe invariant of symplectic 4-manifolds, as well as to study their collapse with sectional curvature bounded from below. À la Gompf, we show that these invariants vanish on symplectic 4-manifolds that realize any given finitely presented group as their fundamental group. We extend to the symplectic realm a result of LeBrun which relates the Kodaira dimension with the Yamabe invariant of compact complex surfaces.

Smooth structures on non-orientable four-manifolds and free involutions

In this paper, we investigate existence of inequivalent smooth structures on closed smooth non-orientable 4-manifolds building upon results of Akbulut, Cappell-Shaneson, Fintushel-Stern, Gompf, and Stolz. We add to the number of known constructions and provide new examples of exotic manifolds that are obtained as an application of Gluck twists to the standard smooth structure. Inspection of the smooth structure on the oriented 2-covers yields existence results of orientation-reversing exotic free involutions.

On entropies, $\mathcal{F}$-structures, and scalar curvature of certain involutions

In this short note, we analyze geometric properties of orbit spaces of certain involutions in dimensions four, five, and six. We consider constructions of $\mathcal{F}$-structures on manifolds of dimension at least four that allows us to study minimal entropy, minimal volume, collapse with bounded curvature, and sign of the Yamabe invariant building on work of Paternain-Petean. The existence of Riemannian metrics of vanishing topological entropy on the orbit spaces is investigated as well.

Cauchy surfaces and diffeomorphism types of globally hyperbolic spacetimes

Chernov-Nemirovski observed that the existence of a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian metric on a (3 + 1)-spacetime pins down a smooth structure on the underlying 4-manifold. In this paper, we point out that the diffeomorphism type of a globally hyperbolic (n + 1)-spacetime is determined by the h-cobordism class of its Cauchy surface, hence extending Chernov-Nemirovski's observation to arbitrary dimensions.

Chirp-wave Expansion of the Electron Wavefunctions in Atoms

The description of the electron wavefunctions in atoms is generalized to the fractional Fourier series. This method introduces a continuous and infinite number of chirp basis sets with linear variation of the frequency to expand the wavefunctions, in which plane-waves are a special case. The chirp characteristics of each basis set can be adjusted through a single parameter. Thus, the basis set cutoff can be optimized variationally. The approach is tested with the expansion of the electron wavefunctions in atoms, and it is shown that chirp basis sets substantially improve the convergence in the description of the electron density. We have found that the natural oscillations of the electron core states are efficiently described in chirp-waves.

On Einstein metrics, normalized Ricci flow and smooth structures on $3\mathbb{CP}^2 # k \bar{\mathbb{CP}}^2$

In this paper, first we consider the existence and non-existence of Einstein metrics on the topological 4-manifolds $3\mathbb{CP}^2 # k \bar{\mathbb{CP}}^2$ (for $k \in {11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18}$) by using the idea of Răsdeaconu and Şuvaina (2009) and the constructions in Park, Park, and Shin (arXiv:0906.5195v2) and in Park, Park, and Shin (2009). Then, we study the existence or non-existence of non-singular solutions of the normalized Ricci flow on the exotic smooth structures of these topological manifolds by employing the obstruction developed in Ishida (2008).

Constructions of generalized complex structures in dimension four

Four-manifold theory is employed to study the existence of (twisted) generalized complex structures. It is shown that there exist (twisted) generalized complex structures that have more than one type change loci. In an example-driven fashion, (twisted) generalized complex structures are constructed on a myriad of four-manifolds, both simply and non-simply connected, which are neither complex nor symplectic.
