Experimental Extraction of Secure Correlations from a Noisy Private State

We report experimental generation of a noisy entangled four-photon state that exhibits a separation between the secure key contents and distillable entanglement, a hallmark feature of the recently established quantum theory of private states. The privacy analysis, based on the full tomographic reconstruction of the prepared state, is utilized in a proof-of-principle key generation. The inferiority of distillation-based strategies to extract the key is exposed by an implementation of an entanglement distillation protocol for the produced state.

Phase estimation without a priori knowledge in the presence of loss

We find the optimal scheme for quantum phase estimation in the presence of loss when no a priori knowledge on the estimated phase is available. We prove analytically an explicit lower bound on estimation uncertainty, which shows that, as a function of number of probes, quantum precision enhancement amounts at most to a constant factor improvement over classical strategies

Quantum states made to measure

Recent progress in manipulating quantum states of light and matter brings quantum-enhanced measurements closer to prospective applications. The current challenge is to make quantum metrologic strategies robust against imperfections.

Multi-pass classical vs. quantum strategies in lossy phase estimation

The use of classical multiple-pass approach for phase estimation which mimics the behavior of the N00N states, is compared with quantum techniques. It is shown that in the presence of losses its performance is significantly worse than the one of the optimal quantum strategy.

Quantum and semiclassical polarization correlations

We analyze the strength of polarization correlations between two light beams that can be achieved in the semiclassical regime using statistical mixtures of coherent states and binary on/off detectors. Under certain symmetry assumptions, the visibility of polarization correlations is shown to be bounded by 1/3, which is in a striking contrast with perfect 100% correlations exhibited by photon pairs prepared in the singlet state. The semiclassical limit is demonstrated in a measurement performed on a pair of laser beams undergoing correlated depolarization. This result illustrates the dramatic difference between predictions of quantum mechanics and the semiclassical theory of electromagnetic radiation for the polarization degree of freedom.

Optimal state for keeping reference frames aligned and the Platonic solids

The optimal N qubit states featuring highest sensitivity to small misalignment of cartesian reference frames are found using the Quantum Cramer-Rao bound. It is shown that the optimal states are supported on the symmetric subspace and hence are mathematically equivalent to a single spin J=N/2. Majorana representation of spin states is used to reveal a beautiful connection between the states optimal for aligning reference frames and the platonic solids.

Global entangling properties of the coupled kicked tops

We study global entangling properties of the system of coupled kicked tops testing various hypotheses and predictions concerning entanglement in quantum chaotic systems. In order to analyze the averaged initial entanglement production rate and the averaged asymptotic entanglement different ensembles of initial product states are evolved. Two different ensembles with natural probability distribution are considered: product states of independent spin-coherent states and product states of arbitrary states. It appears that the choice of either of these ensembles results in significantly different averaged entanglement behavior. We investigate also a relation between the averaged asymptotic entanglement and the mean entanglement of the eigenvectors of an evolution operator. Lower bound on the averaged asymptotic entanglement is derived, expressed in terms of the eigenvector entanglement.

Entanglement Enhances Security in Secret Sharing

We analyze tolerable quantum bit error rates in secret sharing protocols, and show that using entangled encoding states is advantageous in the case when the eavesdropping attacks are local. We also provide a criterion for security in secret sharing -- a parallel of the Csiszar-Korner criterion in single-receiver cryptography.

Quantum state decorrelation

We address the general problem of removing correlations from quantum states while preserving local quantum information as much as possible. We provide a complete solution in the case of two qubits, by evaluating the minimum amount of noise that is necessary to decorrelate covariant sets of bipartite states. We show that two harmonic oscillators in arbitrary Gaussian state can be decorrelated by a Gaussian covariant map. Finally, for finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, we prove that states obtained from most cloning channels (e.g., universal and phase-covariant cloning) can be decorrelated only at the expense of a complete erasure of information about the copied state. More generally, in finite dimension, cloning without correlations is impossible for continuous sets of states. On the contrary, for continuos variables cloning, a slight modification of the customary set-up for cloning coherent states allows one to obtain clones without correlations.

Effects of imperfect noise correlations on decoherence-free subsystems: SU(2) diffusion model

We present a model of an N-qubit channel where consecutive qubits experience correlated random rotations. Our model is an extension to the standard decoherence-free subsystems approach (DFS) which assumes that all the qubits experience the same disturbance. The variation of rotations acting on consecutive qubits is modeled as diffusion on the SU(2) group. The model may be applied to spins traveling in a varying magnetic field, or to photons passing through a fiber whose birefringence fluctuates over the time separation between photons. We derive an explicit formula describing the action of the channel on an arbitrary N-qubit state. For N=3 we investigate the effects of diffusion on both classical and quantum capacity of the channel. We observe that nonorthogonal states are necessary to achieve the optimal classical capacity. Furthermore we find the threshold for the diffusion parameter above which coherent information of the channel vanishes.

Evaluable multipartite entanglement measures: are multipartite concurrences entanglement monotones?

We discuss the monotonicity under local operations and classical communication (LOCC) of systematically constructed quantities aiming at quantification of entanglement properties of multipartite quantum systems. The so-called generalized multipartite concurrences can qualify as legitimate entanglement measures if they are monotonous under LOCC. In the paper we give a necessary and sufficient criterion for their monotonicity.

State estimation on correlated copies

State estimation is usually analyzed in the situation when copies are in a product state, either mixed or pure. We investigate here the concept of state estimation on correlated copies. We analyze state estimation on correlated N qubit states, which are permutationally invariant. Using a correlated state we try to estimate as good as possible the direction of the Bloch vector of a single particle reduced density matrix. We derive the optimal fidelity for all permutation invariant states. We find the optimal state, which yields the highest estimation fidelity among the states with the same reduced density matrix. Interestingly this state is not a product state. We also point out that states produced by optimal universal cloning machines are the worst form the point of view of estimating the reduced density matrix.

Usefulness of classical communication for local cloning of entangled states

We solve the problem of the optimal cloning of pure entangled two-qubit states with a fixed degree of entanglement using local operations and classical communication. We show, that amazingly, classical communication between the parties can improve the fidelity of local cloning if and only if the initial entanglement is higher than a certain critical value. It is completely useless for weakly entangled states. We also show that bound entangled states with positive partial transpose are not useful as a resource to improve the best local cloning fidelity.

Cloning of spin-coherent states

We consider optimal cloning of the spin coherent states in Hilbert spaces of different dimensionality d. We give explicit form of optimal cloning transformation for spin coherent states in the three-dimensional space, analytical results for the fidelity of the optimal cloning in d=3 and d=4 as well as numerical results for higher dimensions. In the low-dimensional case we construct the corresponding completely positive maps and exhibit their structure with the help of Jamiolkowski isomorphism. This allows us to formulate some conjectures about the form of optimal coherent cloning CP maps in arbitrary dimension.
