Toward a Scalable Linear-Cavity Enhanced Warm-Vapor Photonic Quantum Memory

The coherent storage, buffering and retrieval of photons in a quantum memory enables the scalable creation of photonic entangled states via linear optics and repeat-until-success, unlocking applications in quantum communications and photonic quantum computing. Quantum memories based on off-resonant cascaded absorption (ORCA) in atomic vapors allow this storage to be broadband, noise-free, and high efficiency. Here, we implement a cavity-enhanced ORCA memory with reduced footprint and reduced power requirements compared to conventional single-pass schemes. By combining a strong magnetic field with polarization control, we maintain a Doppler-free interaction and eliminate the need for optical pumping. Our design establishes the feasibility of large arrays of ultra-compact, low-power, near-unit-efficiency, noiseless quantum memories running at GHz bandwidth, without the need for atom trapping or cryogenics.

Generation of atomic spin orientation with a linearly polarised beam in room-temperature alkali-metal vapour

Traditionally, atomic spin orientation is achieved by the transfer of angular momentum from polarised light to an atomic system. We demonstrate the mechanism of orientation generation in room-temperature caesium vapours that combines three elements: optical pumping, non-linear spin dynamics and spin-exchange collisions. Through the variation of the spin-exchange relaxation rate, the transition between an aligned and an oriented atomic sample is presented. The observation is performed by monitoring the atomic radio-frequency spectra. The measurement configuration discussed, paves the way to simple and robust radio-frequency atomic magnetometers that are based on a single low power laser diode that approach the performance of multi-laser pump-probe systems.

Dual frequency caesium spin maser

Co-magnetometers have been validated as valuable components of the atomic physics toolbox in fundamental and applied physics. So far, the explorations have been focused on systems involving nuclear spins. Presented here is a demonstration of an active alkali-metal (electronic) system, i.e. a dual frequency spin maser operating with the collective caesium F=3 and F=4 spins. The experiments have been conducted in both magnetically shielded and unshielded environments. In addition to the discussion of the system's positive feedback mechanism, the implementation of the dual frequency spin maser for industrial non-destructive testing is shown. The stability of the F=3 and F=4 spin precession frequency ratio measurement is limited at the $3 \times 10^{-8}$ level, by the laser frequency drift, corresponding to a frequency stability of 1.2 mHz for $10^4$ sec integration time. We discuss measurement strategies that could improve this stability to nHz, enabling measurements with sensitivities to the axion-nucleon and axion-electron interactions at the levels of $f_a/C_N \sim 10^9$ GeV and $f_a/C_e \sim 10^8$ GeV, respectively.

Non-destructive structural imaging of steelwork with atomic magnetometers

We demonstrate the imaging of ferromagnetic carbon steel samples and we detect the thinning of their profile with a sensitivity of 0.1 mm using a Cs radio-frequency atomic magnetometer. Images are obtained at room temperature, in magnetically unscreened environments. By using a dedicated arrangement of the setup and active compensation of background fields, the magnetic disturbance created by the samples' magnetization is compensated. Proof-of-concept demonstrations of non-destructive structural evaluation in the presence of concealing conductive barriers are also provided. The relevant impact for steelwork inspection and health and usage monitoring without disruption of operation is envisaged, with direct benefit for industry, from welding in construction to pipeline inspection and corrosion under insulation in the energy sector.

Absolute Frequency Measurement of Rubidium 5S-7S Two-Photon Transitions

We report the absolute frequency measurements of rubidium 5S-7S two-photon transitions with a cw laser digitally locked to an atomic transition and referenced to an optical frequency comb. The narrow, two-photon transition, 5S-7S (760 nm) insensitive to first order in a magnetic field, is a promising candidate for frequency reference. The performed tests yield the transition frequency with accuracy better than reported previously.

Matter-Wave Interference versus Spontaneous Pattern Formation in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate

We describe effects of matter-wave interference of spinor states in the $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. The components of the F=2 manifold are populated by forced Majorana transitions and then fall freely due to gravity in an applied magnetic field. Weak inhomogeneities of the magnetic field, present in the experiment, impose relative velocities onto different $m_F$ components, which show up as interference patterns upon measurement of atomic density distributions with a Stern-Gerlach imaging method. We show that interference effects may appear in experiments even if gradients of the magnetic field components are eliminated but higher order inhomogeneity is present and the duration of the interaction is long enough. In particular, we show that the resulting matter-wave interference patterns can mimic spontaneous pattern formation in the quantum gas.
