Short-time existence for the network flow

This paper contains a new proof of the short-time existence for the flow by curvature of a network of curves in the plane. Appearing initially in metallurgy and as a model for the evolution of grain boundaries, this flow was later treated by Brakke \cite{Br} using varifold methods. There is good reason to treat this problem by a direct PDE approach, but doing so requires one to deal with the singular nature of the PDE at the vertices of the network. This was handled in cases of increasing generality by Bronsard-Reitich \cite{BrRe}, Mantegazza-Novaga-Tortorelli \cite{MNT} and eventually, in the most general case of irregular networks by Ilmanen-Neves-Schulze \cite{INS}. Although the present paper proves a result similar to the one in \cite{INS}, the method here provides substantially more detailed information about how an irregular network `resolves' into a regular one. Either approach relies on the existence of self-similar expanding solutions found in \cite{MS}. As a precursor to and illustration of the main theorem, we also prove an unexpected regularity result for the mixed Cauchy-Dirichlet boundary problem for the linear heat equation on a manifold with boundary.

Ricci Flow and Volume Renormalizability

With respect to any special boundary defining function, a conformally compact asymptotically hyperbolic metric has an asymptotic expansion near its conformal infinity. If this expansion is even to a certain order and satisfies one extra condition, then it is possible to define its renormalized volume and show that it is independent of choices that preserve this evenness structure. We prove that such expansions are preserved under normalized Ricci flow. We also study the variation of curvature functionals in this setting, and as one application, obtain the variation formula $$ \frac{\rm d}{{\rm d}t} {\rm RenV}\big(M^n, g(t)\big) = -\mathop{\vphantom{T}}^R \! \! \! \int_{M^n} (S(g(t))+n(n-1)) {\rm d}V_{g(t)},$$ where $S(g(t))$ is the scalar curvature for the evolving metric $g(t)$, and $\mathop{\vphantom{T}}^R \! \! \! \int (\cdot) {\rm d}V_g$ is Riesz renormalization. This extends our earlier work to a broader class of metrics.

Asymptotic Geometry of the Hitchin Metric

We study the asymptotics of the natural $L^2$ metric on the Hitchin moduli space with group $G = \mathrm{SU}(2)$. Our main result, which addresses a detailed conjectural picture made by Gaiotto, Neitzke and Moore \cite{gmn13}, is that on the regular part of the Hitchin system, this metric is well-approximated by the semiflat metric from \cite{gmn13}. We prove that the asymptotic rate of convergence for gauged tangent vectors to the moduli space has a precise polynomial expansion, and hence that the the difference between the two sets of metric coefficients in a certain natural coordinate system also has polynomial decay. Very recent work by Dumas and Neitzke indicates that the convergence rate for the metric is exponential, at least in certain directions.

Opers and the twisted Bogomolny equations

In this paper, we study the dimensionally reduced twisted Kapustin-Witten equations on the product of a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ with $\mathbb{R}^+$. The main result is a Kobayashi-Hitchin type correspondence between the space of tilted Nahm pole solutions and the moduli space of Beilinson-Drinfeld opers. This corroborates a prediction of Gaiotto and Witten \cite[p.971]{gaiotto2012knot}.

Families of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ foliated by arcs and their Jacobi fields

This note provides some new perspectives and calculations regarding an interesting known family of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$. The surfaces in this family are the catenoids, parabolic catenoids and tall rectangles. Each is foliated by either circles, horocycles or circular arcs in horizontal copies of $\mathbb{H}^2$. All of these surfaces are well-known, but the emphasis here is on their unifying features and the fact that they lie in a single continuous family. We also initiate a study of the Jacobi operator on the parabolic catenoid, and compute the Jacobi fields associated to deformations to either of the two other types of surfaces in this family.

Classification of Nahm pole solutions of the Kapustin-Witten equations on $S^1\times Σ\times \mathbb{R}^+$

In this note, we classify all solutions to the $\mathrm{SU(n)}$ Kapustin-Witten equations on $S^1\timesΣ\times \mathbb{R}^+$, where $Σ$ is a compact Riemann surface, with Nahm pole singularity at $S^1\timesΣ\times \{0\}$. We provide a similar classification of solutions with generalized Nahm pole singularities along a simple divisor (a "knot") in $S^1\timesΣ\times \{0\}$.

Properly embedded minimal annuli in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$

In this paper we study the moduli space of properly Alexandrov-embedded, minimal annuli in $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ with horizontal ends. We say that the ends are horizontal when they are graphs of $\mathcal{C}^{2, α}$ functions over $\partial_\infty \mathbb{H}^2$. Contrary to expectation, we show that one can not fully prescribe the two boundary curves at infinity, but rather, one can prescribe the bottom curve, but the top curve only up to a translation and a tilt, along with the position of the neck and the vertical flux of the annulus. We also prove general existence theorems for minimal annuli with discrete groups of symmetries.

Conical metrics on Riemann surfaces, I: the compactified configuration space and regularity

We introduce a compactification of the space of simple positive divisors on a Riemann surface, as well as a compactification of the universal family of punctured surfaces above this space. These are real manifolds with corners. We then study the space of constant curvature metrics on this Riemann surface with prescribed conical singularities at these divisors. Our interest here is in the local deformation for these metrics, and in particular the behavior as conic points coalesce. We prove a sharp regularity theorem for this phenomenon in the regime where these metrics are known to exist. This setting will be used in a subsequent paper to study the space of spherical conic metrics with large cone angles, where the existence theory is still incomplete.

The extended Bogomolny equations with generalized Nahm pole boundary conditions, II

We develop a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for the extended Bogomolny equations, i.e., the dimensionally reduced Kapustin-Witten equations, on the product of a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ with ${\mathbb R}^+_y$, with generalized Nahm pole boundary conditions at $y=0$. The correspondence is between solutions of these equations satisfying these singular boundary conditions and also limiting to flat connections as $y \to \infty$, and certain holomorphic data consisting of effective triplets $(\mathcal E, φ, L)$ where $(\mathcal E, φ)$ is a stable $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb C)$ Higgs pair and $L \subset \mathcal E$ is a holomorphic line bundle. This corroborates a prediction of Gaiotto and Witten, and is an extension of our earlier paper \cite{HeMazzeo2017} which treats only the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb R)$ case.

Conformal Fields and the Structure of the Space of Solutions of the Einstein Constraint Equations

The drift method, introduced by the second author, provides a new formulation of the Einstein constraint equations, either in vacuum or with matter fields. The natural of the geometry underlying this method compensates for its slightly greater analytic complexity over, say, the conformal or conformal thin sandwich methods. We review this theory here and apply it to the study of solutions of the constraint equations with non-constant mean curvature. We show that this method reproduces previously known existence results obtained by other methods, and does better in one important regard. Namely, it can be applied even when the underlying metric admits conformal Killing (but not true Killing) vector fields. We also prove that the absence of true Killing fields holds generically.

The KW Equations and the Nahm Pole Boundary Condition with Knots

It is conjectured that the coefficients of the Jones polynomial can be computed by counting solutions of the KW equations on a four-dimensional half-space, with certain boundary conditions that depend on a knot. The boundary conditions are defined by a "Nahm pole" away from the knot with a further singularity along the knot. In a previous paper, we gave a precise formulation of the Nahm pole boundary condition in the absence of knots, in the present paper, we do this in the more general case with knots included. We show that the KW equations with generalized Nahm pole boundary conditions are elliptic, and that the solutions are polyhomogeneous near the boundary and near the knot, with exponents determined by solutions of appropriate indicial equations. This involves the analysis of a "depth two incomplete iterated edge operator." As in our previous paper, a key ingredient in the analysis is a convenient new Weitzenböck formula that is well-adapted to the specific problem.}

The Extended Bogomolny Equations and Generalized Nahm Pole Boundary Condition

In this paper we develop a Kobayashi-Hitchin type correspondence between solutions of the extended Bogomolny equations on $Σ\times \RP$ with Nahm pole singularity at $Σ\times \{0\}$ and the Hitchin component of the stable $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Higgs bundle; this verifies a conjecture of Gaiotto and Witten. We also develop a partial Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for solutions with a knot singularity in this program, corresponding to the non-Hitchin components in the moduli space of stable $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Higgs bundles. We also prove existence and uniqueness of solutions with knot singularities on $\mathbb{C}\ti\RP$.

Opers versus nonabelian Hodge

For a complex simple simply connected Lie group $G$, and a compact Riemann surface $C$, we consider two sorts of families of flat $G$-connections over $C$. Each family is determined by a point ${\mathbf u}$ of the base of Hitchin's integrable system for $(G,C)$. One family $\nabla_{\hbar,{\mathbf u}}$ consists of $G$-opers, and depends on $\hbar \in {\mathbb C}^\times$. The other family $\nabla_{R,ζ,{\mathbf u}}$ is built from solutions of Hitchin's equations, and depends on $ζ\in {\mathbb C}^\times, R \in {\mathbb R}^+$. We show that in the scaling limit $R \to 0$, $ζ= \hbar R$, we have $\nabla_{R,ζ,{\mathbf u}} \to \nabla_{\hbar,{\mathbf u}}$. This establishes and generalizes a conjecture formulated by Gaiotto.

The Novikov conjecture on Cheeger spaces

We prove the Novikov conjecture on oriented Cheeger spaces whose fundamental group satisfies the strong Novikov conjecture. A Cheeger space is a stratified pseudomanifold admitting, through a choice of ideal boundary conditions, an L2-de Rham cohomology theory satisfying Poincare duality. We prove that this cohomology theory is invariant under stratified homotopy equivalences and that its signature is invariant under Cheeger space cobordism. Analogous results, after coupling with a Mishchenko bundle associated to any Galois covering, allow us to carry out the analytic approach to the Novikov conjecture: we define higher analytic signatures of a Cheeger space and prove that they are stratified homotopy invariants whenever the assembly map is rationally injective. Finally we show that the analytic signature of a Cheeger space coincides with its topological signature as defined by Banagl.

Hodge theory on Cheeger spaces

We extend the study of the de Rham operator with ideal boundary conditions from the case of isolated conic singularities, as analyzed by Cheeger, to the case of arbitrary stratified pseudomanifolds. We introduce a class of ideal boundary operators and the notion of mezzoperversity, which intermediates between the standard lower and upper middle perversities in intersection theory, as interpreted in this de Rham setting, and show that the de Rham operator with these boundary conditions is Fredholm and has compact resolvent. We also prove an isomorphism between the resulting Hodge and L2 de Rham cohomology groups, and that these are independent of the choice of iterated edge metric. On spaces which admit ideal boundary conditions of this type which are also self-dual, which we call `Cheeger spaces', we show that these Hodge/de Rham cohomology groups satisfy Poincare Duality.

Teichmüller theory for conic surfaces

In this paper we develop a systematic deformation theory for conic constant curvature metrics on a closed surface when all cone angles are less than $2π$; in particular, we define and study the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}^{\mathrm{conic}}_{γ,k}$ of conic constant curvature metrics on a surface of genus $γ$ with $k$ conic points. The methods here are adopted from higher dimensional global analysis, generalizing Tromba's approach to the study of the standard Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}_γ$. The main new ingredient is the theory of elliptic conic operators.

Kahler-Einstein metrics with edge singularities

This article considers the existence and regularity of Kahler-Einstein metrics on a compact Kahler manifold $M$ with edge singularities with cone angle $2πβ$ along a smooth divisor $D$. We prove existence of such metrics with negative, zero and some positive cases for all cone angles $2πβ\leq 2π$. The results in the positive case parallel those in the smooth case. We also establish that solutions of this problem are polyhomogeneous, i.e., have a complete asymptotic expansion with smooth coefficients along $D$ for all $2πβ< 2π$.

Limiting configurations for solutions of Hitchin's equation

We review recent work on the compactification of the moduli space of Hitchin's self-duality equation. We study the degeneration behavior near the ends of this moduli space in a set of generic directions by showing how limiting configurations can be desingularized. Following ideas of Hitchin, we can relate the top boundary stratum of this space of limiting configurations to a Prym variety. A key rôle is played by the family of rotationally symmetric solutions to the self-duality equation on $\mathbb C$, which we discuss in detail here.
