Adversarially and Distributionally Robust Virtual Energy Storage Systems via the Scenario Approach

We study virtual energy storage services based on the aggregation of EV batteries in parking lots under time-varying, uncertain EV departures and state-of-charge limits. We propose a convex data-driven scheduling framework in which a parking lot manager provides storage services to a prosumer community while interacting with a retailer. The framework yields finite-sample, distribution-free guarantees on constraint violations and allows the parking lot manager to explicitly tune the trade-off between economic performance and operational safety. To enhance reliability under imperfect data, we extend the formulation to adversarial perturbations of the training samples and Wasserstein distributional shifts, obtaining robustness certificates against both corrupted data and out-of-distribution uncertainty. Numerical studies confirm the predicted profit-risk trade-off and show consistency between the theoretical certificates and the observed violation levels.

Modelling, Positioning, and Deep Reinforcement Learning Path Tracking Control of Scaled Robotic Vehicles: Design and Experimental Validation

Mobile robotic systems are becoming increasingly popular. These systems are used in various indoor applications, raging from warehousing and manufacturing to test benches for assessment of advanced control strategies, such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based control solutions, just to name a few. Scaled robotic cars are commonly equipped with a hierarchical control acthiecture that includes tasks dedicated to vehicle state estimation and control. This paper covers both aspects by proposing (i) a federeted extended Kalman filter (FEKF), and (ii) a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL) path tracking controller trained via an expert demonstrator to expedite the learning phase and increase robustess to the simulation-to-reality gap. The paper also presents the formulation of a vehicle model along with an effective yet simple procedure for identifying tis paramters. The experimentally validated model is used for (i) supporting the design of the FEKF and (ii) serving as a digital twin for training the proposed DRL-based path tracking algorithm. Experimental results confirm the ability of the FEKF to improve the estimate of the mobile robot's position. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the DRL path tracking strateguy is experimentally tested along manoeuvres not considered during training, showing also the ability of the AI-based solution to outpeform model-based control strategies and the demonstrator. The comparison with benchmraking controllers is quantitavely evalueted through a set of key performance indicators.

Analyzing the Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Energy Demand: the Case of Northern Italy

The COVID-19 crisis is profoundly influencing the global economic framework due to restrictive measures adopted by governments worldwide. Finding real-time data to correctly quantify this impact is very significant but not as straightforward. Nevertheless, an analysis of the power demand profiles provides insight into the overall economic trends. To accurately assess the change in energy consumption patterns, in this work we employ a multi-layer feed-forward neural network that calculates an estimation of the aggregated power demand in the north of Italy, (i.e, in one of the European areas that were most affected by the pandemics) in the absence of the COVID-19 emergency. After assessing the forecasting model reliability, we compare the estimation with the ground truth data to quantify the variation in power consumption. Moreover, we correlate this variation with the change in mobility behaviors during the lockdown period by employing the Google mobility report data. From this unexpected and unprecedented situation, we obtain some intuition regarding the power system macro-structure and its relation with the overall people's mobility.
