Quantum control of noisy channels

Sender and receiver can control noisy channels by means of the resources they own, that is local operations, potentially correlated using classical communication, and entangled pairs shared between them. Using the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism, we express the control of a noisy channel in terms of control of (non-normalized) states, and show how the available resources enter the analysis. Our formalism provides a general scheme for the protection of quantum state transmission when a single use of the physical channel is considered. Moreover, it paves the way to the application of control theoretical tools to the study of noisy channels. We define the notion of complexity of a noisy channel, as a measure of how demanding is to engineer specific manipulations of a channel. We provide some examples of both deterministic and probabilistic protocols leading to a decreased complexity.

Indirect control of the asymptotic states of a quantum dynamical semigroup

In the dynamics of open quantum systems, the interaction with the external environment usually leads to a contraction of the set of reachable states for the system as time increases, eventually shrinking to a single stationary point. In this contribution we describe to what extent it is possible to modify this asymptotic state by means of indirect control, that is by using an auxiliary system coupled to the target system in order to affect its dynamics, when there is a purely dissipative coupling between the two systems. We prove that, also in this restrictive case, it is possible to modify the asymptotic state of the relevant system, give necessary conditions for that and provide physical examples. Therefore, in indirect control schemes, the environmental action has not only a negative impact on the dynamics of a system, it is rather possible to make use of it for control purposes.

Relaxation to equilibrium driven via indirect control in Markovian dynamics

We characterize to what extent it is possible to modify the stationary states of a quantum dynamical semigroup, that describes the irreversible evolution of a two-level system, by means of an auxiliary two-level system. We consider systems that can be initially entangled or uncorrelated. We find that the indirect control of the stationary states is possible, even if there are not initial correlations, under suitable conditions on the dynamical parameters characterizing the evolution of the joint system.

Entanglement magnification induced by local manipulations

We study the entanglement capability of the evolution of a pair of qubits evolving under unitary dynamics, when the local dynamical parameters cannot be modified during the time-evolution. Unlike the fast local control regime, we find that local and non-local contributions to the dynamics are strictly interconnected. Moreover, it is possible to strongly increase the entanglement capability by suitably initializing the characteristic energies of the two parties.

Optimal generation of entanglement under local control

We study the optimal generation of entanglement between two qubits subject to local unitary control. With the only assumptions of linear control and unitary dynamics, by means of a numerical protocol based on the variational approach (Pontryagin's Minimum Principle), we evaluate the optimal control strategy leading to the maximal achievable entanglement in an arbitrary interaction time, taking into account the energy cost associated to the controls. In our model we can arbitrarily choose the relative weight between a large entanglement and a small energy cost.

Resonant purification of mixed states for closed and open quantum systems

Pure states are fundamental for the implementation of quantum technologies, and several methods for the purification of the state of a quantum system S have been developed in the past years. In this letter we present a new approach, based on the interaction of S with an auxiliary system P, having a wide range of applicability. Considering two-level systems S and P and assuming a particular interaction between them, we prove that complete purifications can be obtained under suitable conditions on the parameters characterizing P. Using analytical and numerical tools, we show that the purification process exhibits a resonant behavior in both the cases of system isolated from the external environment or not.

Decompositions of unitary evolutions and entanglement dynamics of bipartite quantum systems

We describe a decomposition of the Lie group of unitary evolutions for a bipartite quantum system of arbitrary dimensions. The decomposition is based on a recursive procedure which systematically uses the Cartan classification of the symmetric spaces of the Lie group SO(n). The resulting factorization of unitary evolutions clearly displays the local and entangling character of each factor.

Environment induced incoherent controllability

We prove that the environment induced entanglement between two non interacting, two-dimensional quantum systems S and P can be used to control the dynamics of S by means of the initial state of P. Using a simple, exactly solvable model, we show that both accessibility and controllability of S can be achieved under suitable conditions on the interaction of S and P with the environment.

Impact of positivity and complete positivity on accessibility of Markovian dynamics

We consider a two-dimensional quantum control system evolving under an entropy-increasing irreversible dynamics in the semigroup form. Considering a phenomenological approach to the dynamics, we show that the accessibility property of the system depends on whether its evolution is assumed to be positive or completely positive. In particular, we characterize the family of maps having different accessibility and show the impact of that property on observable quantities by means of a simple physical model.

Dissipative dynamics in particle physics

The subject of this thesis is the study of dissipative dynamics and their properties in particle physics, dealing with neutral B-mesons, neutron interferometry and neutrino physics. Modified expressions for the relevant phenomenological quantities characterizing these systems are obtained. Moreover, the models presented in this work offer the possibility of direct tests of some basic properties of reduced dynamics (in particular the notion of complete positivity) since they represent concrete systems amenable to actual experiments.
