On Fermi's model for the scattering of a slow neutron from a bound proton

We consider a model Hamiltonian, introduced by Fermi in 1936, describing a two-particle system made of a neutron and a harmonically bound proton, where the neutron-proton interaction has the form of a $\delta$-potential. For such Hamiltonian we prove the Limiting Absorption Principle and describe the stationary scattering theory. Finally, we derive Fermi's formula for the scattering cross-section valid in the Born approximation.

Point interactions and singular solutions to semilinear elliptic equations

We investigate the connection between semilinear elliptic PDEs with isolated singularities and stationary nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with point interactions. In dimensions $d=2,3$, we establish a rigorous correspondence between their solutions, revealing two regimes depending on whether a boundary condition at the singularity can be imposed. This connection enables us to exploit operator-theoretic and variational methods that have not previously been applied to the study of isolated singularities. In the source regime, we prove the existence of infinitely many radial singular solutions, by applying the symmetric mountain pass theorem of Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz to the action functional associated with the point interaction. When $d=2$, a suitable uniqueness result allows us to characterize singular ground states (positive solutions) as action minimizers and to prove the existence of infinitely many nodal singular solutions.

Approximation of Schr\"odinger operators with point interactions on bounded domains

We consider Schr\"odinger operators on a bounded domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^3$, with homogeneous Robin or Dirichlet boundary conditions on $\partial\Omega$ and a point (zero-range) interaction placed at an interior point of $\Omega$. We show that, under suitable spectral assumptions, and by means of an extension-restriction procedure which exploit the already known result on the entire space, the singular interaction is approximated by rescaled sequences of regular potentials. The result is missing in the literature, and we also take the opportunity to point out some general issues in the approximation of point interactions and the role of zero energy resonances.

Energy cascade and Sobolev norms inflation for the quantum Euler equations on tori

In this paper we prove the existence of solutions to the quantum Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}^d$, $d\geqslant 2$, with almost constant mass density, displaying energy transfers to high Fourier modes and polynomially fast-in-time growth of Sobolev norms above the finite-energy level. These solutions are uniformly far from vacuum, suggesting that weak turbulence in quantum hydrodynamics is not necessarily related to the occurrence of vortex structures. In view of possible connections with instability mechanisms for the classical compressible Euler equations, we also keep track of the dependence on the semiclassical parameter, showing that, at high regularity, the time at which the Sobolev norm inflations occur is uniform when approaching the semiclassical limit. Our construction relies on a novel result of Sobolev instability for the plane waves of the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS), which is connected to the quantum Euler equations through the Madelung transform}. More precisely, we show the existence of smooth solutions to NLS, which are small-amplitude perturbations of a plane wave and undergo a polynomially fast $H^s$-norm inflation for $s>1$. The proof is based on a partial Birkhoff normal form procedure, involving the normalization of non-homogeneous Hamiltonian terms.

A proof of the union-closed sets conjecture

We provide a proof of the union-closed sets conjecture, by means of a suitable refinement of the breakthrough entropy-approach introduced by Gilmer. The novelty here is to consider a convex combination of $A$ and $A\cup B$, where $A,B$ are independent samples from the uniform distribution over a union-closed family.

Existence and Stability of almost finite energy weak solutions to the Quantum Euler-Maxwell system

We prove the existence of global in time, finite energy, weak solutions to a quantum magnetohydrodynamic system (QMHD) with large data, modeling a charged quantum fluid interacting with a self-generated electromagnetic field. The analysis of QMHD relies upon the use of Madelung transformations. The rigorous derivation requires non-trivial smoothing estimates, which are obtained by assuming slightly higher regularity for the electromagnetic potential. These assumptions are motivated by the nonlinear dependence of the hydrodynamic system in terms of the underlying wave function dynamics, which is supercritical with respect to the bare energy bounds. Due to quantum effects on the dispersive properties of QMHD, our approach requires neither smallness nor high regularity, unlike a large amount of existing literature for Euler-Maxwell's classical system. For quantum MHD system the irrotationality and the presence of a highly nonlinear quantum stress tensor induce much stronger dispersive properties, as a byproduct of a close relationship with the classical Maxwell-Schrödinger system. Therefore the core argument is shifted to the analysis of the nonlinearities related to the formulation of the hydrodynamic variables through the Madelung transformations. The analysis carried out in section 4 shows that it is necessary to go through non-trivial smoothing estimates and these require us to assume regularity conditions, just above the energy norms, for the initial data of the Maxwellian electromagnetic potential. In the same regime of regularity, with the help of suitable local smoothing estimates, we also prove stability of both the hydrodynamic variables and the Lorentz force associated with the electromagnetic field. Standing waves and global well-posedness for the 2d Hartree equation with a point interaction

We study a class of two-dimensional non-linear Schrödinger equations with point-like singular perturbation and Hartree non-linearity. The point-like singular perturbation of the free Laplacian induces appropriate perturbed Sobolev spaces that are necessary for the study of ground states and evolution flow. We include in our treatment both mass sub-critical and mass critical Hartree non-linearities. Our analysis is two-fold: we establish existence, symmetry, and regularity of ground states, and we demonstrate the well-posedness of the associated Cauchy problem in the singular perturbed energy space. The first goal, unlike other treatments emerging in parallel with the present work, is achieved by a non-trivial adaptation of the standard properties of Schwartz symmetrisation for the modified Weinstein functional. This produces, among others, modified Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequalities that allow to efficiently control the non-linearity and obtain well-posedness by energy methods. The evolution flow is proved to be global in time in the defocusing case, and in the focusing and mass sub-critical case. It is also global in the focusing and mass critical case, for initial data that are suitably small in terms of the best Gagliardo-Nirenberg constant.

Global well-posedness for the non-linear Maxwell-Schrödinger system

In this paper we study the Cauchy problem associated to the Maxwell-Schrödinger system with a defocusing pure-power non-linearity. This system has many applications in physics, for instance in the description of a charged non-relativistic quantum plasma, interacting with its self-generated electromagnetic potential. One consequence of our analysis is to demonstrate that the Lorentz force associated with the electromagnetic field is well-defined for solutions slightly more regular than the finite energy class. This aspect is of fundamental importance since all the related physical models require the observability of electromagnetic effects. The well-posedness of the Lorentz force still seems to be a major open problem in the class of solutions which are only finite energy. We show the global well-posedness at high regularity for the cubic and sub-cubic case, and we provide polynomial bounds for the growth of the Sobolev norm of the solutions, for a certain range of non-linearities. An important role is played by appropriate a priori dispersive estimates, obtained by means of Koch-Tzvetkov type bounds for the non-homogeneous Schrödinger equation, which overcome the lack of Strichartz estimates for the magnetic Schrödinger flow. Because of the power-type non-linearity, the propagation of higher regularity, globally in time, cannot be achieved via a bootstrap argument as done in [44]. Our approach then exploits the analysis of a modified energy functional, combined with the a priori bounds coming from the dispersive estimates obtained previously.

A characterization of singular Schrödinger operators on the half-line

We study a class of delta-like perturbations of the Laplacian on the half-line, characterized by Robin boundary conditions at the origin. Using the formalism of nonstandard analysis, we derive a simple connection with a suitable family of Schrödinger operators with potentials of very large (infinite) magnitude and very short (infinitesimal) range. As a consequence, we also derive a similar result for point interactions in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, in the case of radial potentials. Moreover, we discuss explicitly our results in the case of potentials that are linear in a neighbourhood of the origin.

Fractional powers and singular perturbations of quantum differential Hamiltonians

We consider the fractional powers of singular (point-like) perturbations of the Laplacian, and the singular perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian, and we compare such two constructions focusing on their perturbative structure for resolvents and on the local singularity structure of their domains. In application to the linear and non-linear Schrödinger equations for the corresponding operators we outline a programme of relevant questions that deserve being investigated.

The singular Hartree equation in fractional perturbed Sobolev spaces

We establish the local and global theory for the Cauchy problem of the singular Hartree equation in three dimensions, that is, the modification of the non-linear Schrödinger equation with Hartree non-linearity, where the linear part is now given by the Hamiltonian of point interaction. The latter is a singular, self-adjoint perturbation of the free Laplacian, modelling a contact interaction at a fixed point. The resulting non-linear equation is the typical effective equation for the dynamics of condensed Bose gases with fixed point-like impurities. We control the local solution theory in the perturbed Sobolev spaces of fractional order between the mass space and the operator domain. We then control the global solution theory both in the mass and in the energy space.

Point-like perturbed fractional Laplacians through shrinking potentials of finite range

We reconstruct the rank-one, singular (point-like) perturbations of the $d$-dimensional fractional Laplacian in the physically meaningful norm-resolvent limit of fractional Schrödinger operators with regular potentials centred around the perturbation point and shrinking to a delta-like shape. We analyse both the possible regimes, the resonance-driven and the resonance-independent limit, depending on the power of the fractional Laplacian and the spatial dimension. To this aim, we also qualify the notion of zero-energy resonance for Schrödinger operators formed by a fractional Laplacian and a regular potential.

Global, finite energy, weak solutions for the NLS with rough, time-dependent magnetic potentials

We prove the existence of weak solutions in the space of energy for a class of non-linear Schroedinger equations in the presence of a external rough magnetic potential. Under our assumptions it is not possible to study the problem by means of usual arguments like resolvent techniques or Fourier integral operators, for example. We use a parabolic regularization and we solve the approximating Cauchy problem. This is achieved by obtaining suitable smoothing estimates for the dissipative evolution. The total mass and energy bounds allow to extend the solution globally in time. We then infer sufficient compactness properties in order to produce a global-in-time finite energy weak solution to our original problem.

On fractional powers of singular perturbations of the Laplacian

We qualify a relevant range of fractional powers of the so-called Hamiltonian of point interaction in three dimensions, namely the singular perturbation of the negative Laplacian with a contact interaction supported at the origin. In particular we provide an explicit control of the domain of such a fractional operator and of its decomposition into regular and singular parts. We also qualify the norms of the resulting singular fractional Sobolev spaces and their mutual control with the corresponding classical Sobolev norms.

Dispersive estimates for Schrödinger operators with point interactions in $\mathbb{R}^3$

The study of dispersive properties of Schrödinger operators with point interactions is a fundamental tool for understanding the behavior of many body quantum systems interacting with very short range potential, whose dynamics can be approximated by non linear Schrödinger equations with singular interactions. In this work we proved that, in the case of one point interaction in $\mathbb{R}^3$, the perturbed Laplacian satisfies the same $L^p-L^q$ estimates of the free Laplacian in the smaller regime $q\in[2,3)$. These estimates are implied by a recent result concerning the $L^p$ boundedness of the wave operators for the perturbed Laplacian. Our approach, however, is more direct and relatively simple, and could potentially be useful to prove optimal weighted estimates also in the regime $q\geq 3$.
