Compatible pairs of Hamiltonian operators of the first and third orders

We compute general compatibility conditions between a weakly nonlocal homogeneous Hamiltonian operator and a third-order homogeneous Hamiltonian operator. Such operators determine a bi-Hamiltonian structure for many integrable PDEs (Korteweg--De Vries, Camassa--Holm, dispersive water waves, Dym, WDVV and others). Remarkably, the full set of conditions is purely algebraic and the first-order operator is completely determined by commuting systems of conservation laws that are Hamiltonian with respect to a third-order operator. We illustrate the above results with several examples, some of which, concerning WDVV equations, are new.

WDVV equations: Hamiltonian operators and symbolic computations

We describe software for symbolic computations that we developed in order to find Hamiltonian operators for Witten--Dijkgraaf--Verlinde--Verlinde (WDVV) equations, and verify their compatibility. The computation involves nonlocal (integro-differential) operators, for which specific canonical forms and algorithms have been used.

Projective geometry of homogeneous second order Hamiltonian operators

We prove the invariance of homogeneous second-order Hamiltonian operators under the action of projective reciprocal transformations. We establish a correspondence between such operators in dimension $n$ and $3$-forms in dimension $n + 1$. In this way we classify second order Hamiltonian operators using the known classification of $3$-forms in dimensions $\leq$ 9. Systems of first-order conservation laws that are Hamiltonian with respect to such operators are also explicitly found. The integrability of the systems is discussed in detail.

Weakly nonlocal Poisson brackets: tools, examples, computations

We implement an algorithm for the computation of Schouten bracket of weakly nonlocal Hamiltonian operators in three different computer algebra systems: Maple, Reduce and Mathematica. This class of Hamiltonian operators encompass almost all the examples coming from the theory of (1+1)-integrable evolutionary PDEs

Homogeneous Hamiltonian operators and the theory of coverings

A new method (by Kersten, Krasil'shchik and Verbovetsky), based on the theory of differential coverings, allows to relate a system of PDEs with a differential operator in such a way that the operator maps symmetries/conserved quantities into symmetries/conserved quantities of the system of PDEs. When applied to a quasilinear first-order system of PDEs and a Dubrovin-Novikov homogeneous Hamiltonian operator the method yields conditions on the operator and the system that have interesting differential and projective geometric interpretations.

WDVV equations and invariant bi-Hamiltonian formalism

The purpose of the paper is to show that, in low dimensions, the WDVV equations are bi-Hamiltonian. The invariance of the bi-Hamiltonian formalism is proved for $N=3$. More examples in higher dimensions show that the result might hold in general. The invariance group of the bi-Hamiltonian pairs that we find for WDVV equations is the group of projective transformations. The significance of projective invariance of WDVV equations is discussed in detail. The computer algebra programs that were used for calculations throughout the paper are provided in a GitHub repository.

Classification of bi-Hamiltonian pairs extended by isometries

The aim of this article is to classify pairs of first-order Hamiltonian operators of Dubrovin-Novikov type such that one of them has a non-local part defined by an isometry of its leading coefficient. An example of such bi-Hamiltonian pair was recently found for the constant astigmatism equation. We obtain a classification in the case of 2 dependent variables, and a significant new example that is an extension of a hydrodynamic type system obtained from a particular solution of the WDVV equations.

The geometry of real reducible polarizations in quantum mechanics

The formulation of Geometric Quantization contains several axioms and assumptions. We show that for real polarizations we can generalize the standard geometric quantization procedure by introducing an arbitrary connection on the polarization bundle. The existence of reducible quantum structures leads to considering the class of Liouville symplectic manifolds. Our main application of this modified geometric quantization scheme is to Quantum Mechanics on Riemannian manifolds. With this method we obtain an energy operator without the scalar curvature term that appears in the standard formulation, thus agreeing with the usual expression found in the Physics literature.

Ordinary differential equations described by their Lie symmetry algebra

The theory of Lie remarkable equations, i.e. differential equations characterized by their Lie point symmetries, is reviewed and applied to ordinary differential equations. In particular, we consider some relevant Lie algebras of vector fields on $\mathbb{R}^k$ and characterize Lie remarkable equations admitted by the considered Lie algebras.

On the Mathematical and Geometrical Structure of the Determining Equations for Shear Waves in Nonlinear Isotropic Incompressible Elastodynamics

Using the theory of $1+1$ hyperbolic systems we put in perspective the mathematical and geometrical structure of the celebrated circularly polarized waves solutions for isotropic hyperelastic materials determined by Carroll in Acta Mechanica 3 (1967) 167--181. We show that a natural generalization of this class of solutions yields an infinite family of \emph{linear} solutions for the equations of isotropic elastodynamics. Moreover, we determine a huge class of hyperbolic partial differential equations having the same property of the shear wave system. Restricting the attention to the usual first order asymptotic approximation of the equations determining transverse waves we provide the complete integration of this system using generalized symmetries.

On the geometry of the energy operator in quantum mechanics

We analyze the different ways to define the energy operator in geometric theories of quantum mechanics. In some formulations the operator contains the scalar curvature as a multiplicative term. We show that such term can be canceled or added with an arbitrary constant factor, both in the mainstream Geometric Quantization and in the Covariant Quantum Mechanics, developed by Jadczyk and Modugno with several contributions from many authors.

On the characterization of infinitesimal symmetries of the relativistic phase space

The phase space of relativistic particle mechanics is defined as the 1st jet space of motions regarded as timelike 1-dimensional submanifolds of spacetime. A Lorentzian metric and an electromagnetic 2-form define naturally on the odd-dimensional phase space a generalized contact structure. In the paper infinitesimal symmetries of the phase structures are characterized. More precisely, it is proved that all phase infinitesimal symmetries are special Hamiltonian lifts of distinguished conserved quantities on the phase space. It is proved that generators of infinitesimal symmetries constitute a Lie algebra with respect to a special bracket. A momentum map for groups of symmetries of the geometric structures is provided.

A unified approach to computation of integrable structures

We expose (without proofs) a unified computational approach to integrable structures (including recursion, Hamiltonian, and symplectic operators) based on geometrical theory of partial differential equations. We adopt a coordinate based approach and aim to provide a tutorial to the computations.

On integrable structures for a generalized Monge-Ampere equation

We consider a 3rd-order generalized Monge-Ampere equation u_yyy - u_xxy^2 + u_xxx u_xyy = 0 (which is closely related to the associativity equation in the 2-d topological field theory) and describe all integrable structures related to it (i.e., Hamiltonian, symplectic, and recursion operators). Infinite hierarchies of symmetries and conservation laws are constructed as well.

Hamiltonian structures for general PDEs

We sketch out a new geometric framework to construct Hamiltonian operators for generic, non-evolutionary partial differential equations. Examples on how the formalism works are provided for the KdV equation, Camassa-Holm equation, and Kupershmidt's deformation of a bi-Hamiltonian system.

Integrability of Kupershmidt deformations

We prove that the Kupershmidt deformation of a bi-Hamiltonian system is itself bi-Hamiltonian. Moreover, Magri hierarchies of the initial system give rise to Magri hierarchies of Kupershmidt deformations as well. Since Kupershmidt deformations are not written in evolution form, we start with an outline a geometric framework to study Hamiltonian properties of general non-evolution differential equations, developed in [2] (see also arXiv:0812.4895).
