$p$-Laplace Operators for Oriented Hypergraphs

The $p$-Laplacian for graphs, as well as the vertex Laplace operator and the hyperedge Laplace operator for the general setting of oriented hypergraphs, are generalized. In particular, both a vertex $p$-Laplacian and a hyperedge $p$-Laplacian are defined for oriented hypergraphs, for all $p\geq 1$. Several spectral properties of these operators are investigated.

Interlacing Results for Hypergraphs

Hypergraphs are a generalization of graphs in which edges can connect any number of vertices. They allow the modeling of complex networks with higher-order interactions, and their spectral theory studies the qualitative properties that can be inferred from the spectrum, i.e. the multiset of the eigenvalues, of an operator associated to a hypergraph. It is expected that a small perturbation of a hypergraph, such as the removal of a few vertices or edges, does not lead to a major change of the eigenvalues. In particular, it is expected that the eigenvalues of the original hypergraph interlace the eigenvalues of the perturbed hypergraph. Here we work on hypergraphs where, in addition, each vertex--edge incidence is given a real number, and we prove interlacing results for the adjacency matrix, the Kirchoff Laplacian and the normalized Laplacian. Tightness of the inequalities is also shown.

A Cheeger Cut for Uniform Hypergraphs

The graph Cheeger constant and Cheeger inequalities are generalized to the case of hypergraphs whose edges have the same cardinality. In particular, it is shown that the second largest eigenvalue of the generalized normalized Laplacian is bounded both above and below by the generalized Cheeger constant, and the corresponding eigenfunctions can be used to approximate the Cheeger cut.

Coupled Hypergraph Maps and Chaotic Cluster Synchronization

Coupled map lattices (CMLs) are prototypical dynamical systems on networks/graphs. They exhibit complex patterns generated via the interplay of diffusive/Laplacian coupling and nonlinear reactions modelled by a single iterated map at each node; the maps are often taken as unimodal, e.g., logistic or tent maps. In this letter, we propose a class of higher-order coupled dynamical systems involving the hypergraph Laplacian, which we call coupled hypergraph maps (CHMs). By combining linearized (in-)stability analysis of synchronized states, hypergraph spectral theory, and numerical methods, we detect robust regions of chaotic cluster synchronization occurring in parameter space upon varying coupling strength and the main bifurcation parameter of the unimodal map. Furthermore, we find key differences between Laplacian and hypergraph Laplacian coupling and detect various other classes of periodic and quasi-periodic patterns. The results show the high complexity of coupled graph maps and indicate that they might be an excellent universal model class to understand the similarities and differences between dynamics on classical graphs and dynamics on hypergraphs.

Sharp bounds for the largest eigenvalue

We generalize the classical sharp bounds for the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplace operator, $\frac{N}{N-1}\leq λ_N\leq 2$, to the case of chemical hypergraphs.

Spectral Theory of Laplace Operators on Oriented Hypergraphs

Several new spectral properties of the normalized Laplacian defined for oriented hypergraphs are shown. The eigenvalue $1$ and the case of duplicate vertices are discussed; two Courant nodal domain theorems are established; new quantities that bound the eigenvalues are introduced. In particular, the Cheeger constant is generalized and it is shown that the classical Cheeger bounds can be generalized for some classes of hypergraphs; it is shown that a geometric quantity used to study zonotopes bounds the largest eigenvalue from below, and that the notion of coloring number can be generalized and used for proving a Hoffman-like bound. Finally, the spectrum of the unnormalized Laplacian for Cartesian products of hypergraphs is discussed.

Spectral classes of hypergraphs

The notions of spectral measures and spectral classes, which are well known for graphs, are generalized and investigated for oriented hypergraphs.

Signless Normalized Laplacian for Hypergraphs

The spectral theory of the normalized Laplacian for chemical hypergraphs is further investigated. The signless normalized Laplacian is introduced and it is shown that its spectrum for classical hypergraphs coincides with the spectrum of the normalized Laplacian for bipartite chemical hypergraphs. Furthermore, the spectra of special families of hypergraphs are established.

Normalized Laplace Operators for Hypergraphs with Real Coefficients

Chemical hypergraphs and their associated normalized Laplace operators are generalized and studied in the case where each vertex--hyperedge incidence has a real coefficient. We systematically study the effect of symmetries of a hypergraph on the spectrum of the Laplacian.

Coupled Dynamics on Hypergraphs: Master Stability of Steady States and Synchronization

In the study of dynamical systems on networks/graphs, a key theme is how the network topology influences stability for steady states or synchronized states. Ideally, one would like to derive conditions for stability or instability that instead of microscopic details of the individual nodes/vertices rather make the influence of the network coupling topology visible. The master stability function is an important such tool to achieve this goal. Here we generalize the master stability approach to hypergraphs. A hypergraph coupling structure is important as it allows us to take into account arbitrary higher-order interactions between nodes. As for instance in the theory of coupled map lattices, we study Laplace type interaction structures in detail. Since the spectral theory of Laplacians on hypergraphs is richer than on graphs, we see the possibility of new dynamical phenomena. More generally, our arguments provide a blueprint for how to generalize dynamical structures and results from graphs to hypergraphs.

A Survey on Wild Mathematics

We usually construct mathematical objects that are accessible, on which we can put our hands, but a huge part of the mathematical existing is actually wild. Here we explore part of the wild world: its inhabitants are knots that are infinitely knotted, spheres that try to hug themselves, colorful earrings, labyrinths of labyrinths...

Random geometric complexes and graphs on Riemannian manifolds in the thermodynamic limit

We investigate some topological properties of random geometric complexes and random geometric graphs on Riemannian manifolds in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, for random geometric complexes we prove that the normalized counting measure of connected components, counted according to isotopy type, converges in probability to a deterministic measure. More generally, we also prove similar convergence results for the counting measure of types of components of each $k$-skeleton of a random geometric complex. As a consequence, in the case of the $1$-skeleton (i.e. for random geometric graphs) we show that the empirical spectral measure associated to the normalized Laplace operator converges to a deterministic measure.

Spectral gap of the largest eigenvalue of the normalized graph Laplacian

We offer a new method for proving that the maximal eigenvalue of the normalized graph Laplacian of a graph with $n$ vertices is at least $\frac{n+1}{n-1}$ provided the graph is not complete and that equality is attained if and only if the complement graph is a single edge or a complete bipartite graph with both parts of size $\frac{n-1}2$. With the same method, we also prove a new lower bound to the largest eigenvalue in terms of the minimum vertex degree, provided this is at most $\frac{n-1}{2}$.

Hypergraph Laplace Operators for Chemical Reaction Networks

We generalize the normalized combinatorial Laplace operator for graphs by defining two Laplace operators for hypergraphs that can be useful in the study of chemical reaction networks. We also investigate some properties of their spectra.

Minimal Embedding Dimensions of Connected Neural Codes

In the past few years, the study of receptive field codes has been of large interest to mathematicians. Here we give a complete characterization of receptive field codes realizable by connected receptive fields and we give the minimal embedding dimensions of these codes. In particular, we show that all connected codes are realizable in dimension at most 3. To our knowledge, this is the first family of receptive field codes for which the exact characterization and minimal embedding dimension is known.
