On the removal of the trace mode in lattice ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory

Twisted and orbifold formulations of lattice ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory which possess an exact supersymmetry require a $U(N)=SU(N)\otimes U(1)$ gauge group. In the naive continuum limit, the $U(1)$ modes trivially decouple and play no role in the theory. However, at non-zero lattice spacing they couple to the $SU(N)$ modes and can drive instabilities in the lattice theory. For example, it is well known that the lattice $U(1)$ theory undergoes a phase transition at strong coupling to a chirally broken phase. An improved action that suppresses the fluctuations in the $U(1)$ sector was proposed in arXiv:1505.03135 . Here, we explore a more aggressive approach to the problem by adding a term to the action which can entirely suppress the $U(1)$ mode. The penalty is that the new term breaks the $\mathcal{Q}$-exact lattice supersymmetry. However, we argue that the term is $1/N^2$ suppressed and the existence of a supersymmetric fixed point in the planar limit ensures that any SUSY-violating terms induced in the action possess couplings that also vanish in this limit. We present numerical results on supersymmetric Ward identities consistent with this conclusion.

Lattice quantum gravity with scalar fields

We consider the four-dimensional Euclidean dynamical triangulations lattice model of quantum gravity based on triangulations of $S^{4}$. We couple it minimally to a scalar field in the quenched approximation. Our results suggest a multiplicative renormalization for the mass of the scalar field which is consistent with the shift symmetry of the discretized lattice action. We discuss the possibility of measuring the mass anomalous dimension and the gravitational binding energy between two scalar test particles, where a negative bound state energy would imply that this model has an attractive gravitational force.

Testing holography using lattice super-Yang--Mills on a 2-torus

We consider maximally supersymmetric SU(N) Yang--Mills theory in Euclidean signature compactified on a flat two-dimensional torus with anti-periodic (`thermal') fermion boundary conditions imposed on one cycle. At large N, holography predicts that this theory describes certain black hole solutions in Type IIA and IIB supergravity, and we use lattice gauge theory to test this. Unlike the one-dimensional quantum mechanics case where there is only the dimensionless temperature to vary, here we emphasize there are two more parameters which determine the shape of the flat torus. While a rectangular Euclidean torus yields a thermal interpretation, allowing for skewed tori modifies the holographic dual black hole predictions and results in another direction to test holography. Our lattice calculations are based on a supersymmetric formulation naturally adapted to a particular skewing. Using this we perform simulations up to N=16 with several lattice spacings for both skewed and rectangular tori. We observe the two expected black hole phases with their predicted behavior, with a transition between them that is consistent with the gravity prediction based on the Gregory--Laflamme transition.

Nonperturbative study of dynamical SUSY breaking in $\mathcal{N} = (2, 2)$ Yang-Mills

We examine the possibility of dynamical supersymmetry breaking in two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The theory is discretized on a Euclidean spacetime lattice using a supersymmetric lattice action. We compute the vacuum energy of the theory at finite temperature and take the zero temperature limit. Supersymmetry will be spontaneously broken in this theory if the measured ground state energy is non-zero. By performing simulations on a range of lattices up to $96 \times 96$ we are able to perform a careful extrapolation to the continuum limit for a wide range of temperatures. Subsequent extrapolations to the zero temperature limit yield an upper bound on the ground state energy density. We find the energy density to be statistically consistent with zero in agreement with the absence of dynamical supersymmetry breaking in this theory.

Testing the holographic principle using lattice simulations

The lattice studies of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills (MSYM) theory at strong coupling and large N is important for verifying gauge/gravity duality. Due to the progress made in the last decade, based on ideas from topological twisting and orbifolding, it is now possible to study these theories on the lattice while preserving an exact supersymmetry on the lattice. We present some results from the lattice studies of two-dimensional MSYM which is related to Type II supergravity. Our results agree with the thermodynamics of different black hole phases on the gravity side and the phase transition (Gregory--Laflamme) between them.
