Rethinking Generative Semantic Communication for Multi-User Systems with Large Language Models

The surge in connected devices in 6G with typical complex tasks requiring multi-user cooperation, such as smart agriculture and smart cities, poses significant challenges to unsustainable traditional communication. Fortunately, the booming artificial intelligence technology and the growing computational power of devices offer a promising 6G enabler: semantic communication (SemCom). However, existing deep learning-based SemCom paradigms struggle to extend to multi-user scenarios due to its increasing model size with the growing number of users and its limited compatibility with complex communication environments. Consequently, to truly empower 6G networks with this critical technology, this article rethinks generative SemCom for multi-user system and proposes a novel framework called ``M-GSC" with the large language model (LLM) as the shared knowledge base (SKB). The LLM-based SKB plays three critical roles, that is, complex task decomposition, semantic representation specification, and semantic translation and mapping, for complex tasks, spawning a series of benefits such as semantic encoding standardization and semantic decoding personalization. Meanwhile, to enhance the performance of M-GSC framework, we highlight three optimization strategies unique to this framework: extending the LLM-based SKB into a multi-agent LLM system, offloading semantic encoding and decoding, and managing communication and computational resources. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the preliminary validation on the effectiveness of the M-GSC framework in terms of efficient decoding offloading.

ELAA-ISAC: Environmental Mapping Utilizing the LoS State of Communication Channel

In this paper, a novel environmental mapping method is proposed to outline the indoor layout utilizing the line-of-sight (LoS) state information of extremely large aperture array (ELAA) channels. It leverages the spatial resolution provided by ELAA and the mobile terminal (MT)'s mobility to infer the presence and location of obstacles in the environment. The LoS state estimation is formulated as a binary hypothesis testing problem, and the optimal decision rule is derived based on the likelihood ratio test. Subsequently, the theoretical error probability of LoS estimation is derived, showing close alignment with simulation results. Then, an environmental mapping method is proposed, which progressively outlines the layout by combining LoS state information from multiple MT locations. It is demonstrated that the proposed method can accurately outline the environment layout, with the mapping accuracy improving as the number of service-antennas and MT locations increases. This paper also investigates the impact of channel estimation error and non-LoS (NLoS) components on the quality of environmental mapping. The proposed method exhibits particularly promising performance in LoS dominated wireless environments characterized by high Rician K-factor. Specifically, it achieves an average intersection over union (IoU) exceeding 80% when utilizing 256 service antennas and 18 MT locations.

Near-Field Localization with Physics-Compliant Electromagnetic Model: Algorithms and Model Mismatch Analysis

Accurate signal localization is critical for Internet of Things applications, but precise propagation models are often unavailable due to uncontrollable factors. Simplified models such as planar and spherical wavefront approximations are widely used but can cause model mismatches that reduce accuracy. To address this, we propose an expected likelihood ratio framework for model mismatch analysis and online model selection without requiring knowledge of the true propagation model. The framework leverages the scenario independent distribution of the likelihood ratio of the actual covariance matrix, enabling the detection of mismatches and outliers by comparing given models to a predefined distribution. When an accurate electromagnetic model is unavailable, the robustness of the framework is analyzed using data generated from a precise electromagnetic model and simplified models within positioning algorithms. Validation in direct localization and reconfigurable intelligent surface assisted scenarios demonstrates the ability to improve localization accuracy and reliably detect model mismatches in diverse Internet of Things environments.

Direct Uplink Connectivity in Space MIMO Systems with THz and FSO Inter-Satellite Links

This paper investigates uplink transmission from a single-antenna mobile phone to a cluster of satellites, emphasizing the role of inter-satellite links (ISLs) in facilitating cooperative signal detection. The study focuses on non-ideal ISLs, examining both terahertz (THz) and free-space optical (FSO) ISLs concerning their ergodic capacity. We present a practical scenario derived from the recent 3GPP standard, specifying the frequency band, bandwidth, user and satellite antenna gains, power levels, and channel characteristics in alignment with the latest 3GPP for non-terrestrial networks (NTN). Additionally, we propose a satellite selection method to identify the optimal satellite as the master node (MN), responsible for signal processing. This method takes into account both the user-satellite link and ISL channels. For the THz ISL analysis, we derive a closed-form approximation for ergodic capacity under two scenarios: one with instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and another with only statistical CSI shared between satellites. For the FSO ISL analysis, we present a closed-form approximate upper bound for ergodic capacity, accounting for the impact of pointing error loss. Furthermore, we evaluate the effects of different ISL frequencies and pointing errors on spectral efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that multi-satellite multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) satellite communication (SatCom) significantly outperforms single-satellite SatCom in terms of spectral efficiency. Additionally, our approximated upper bound for ergodic capacity closely aligns with results obtained from Monte Carlo simulations.

Secured Communication Schemes for UAVs in 5G: CRYSTALS-Kyber and IDS

This paper introduces a secure communication architecture for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and ground stations in 5G networks, addressing critical challenges in network security. The proposed solution integrates the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and CRYSTALS-Kyber for key encapsulation, offering a hybrid cryptographic approach. By incorporating CRYSTALS-Kyber, the framework mitigates vulnerabilities in ECC against quantum attacks, positioning it as a quantum-resistant alternative. The architecture is based on a server-client model, with UAVs functioning as clients and the ground station acting as the server. The system was rigorously evaluated in both VPN and 5G environments. Experimental results confirm that CRYSTALS-Kyber delivers strong protection against quantum threats with minimal performance overhead, making it highly suitable for UAVs with resource constraints. Moreover, the proposed architecture integrates an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to further enhance security. In performance evaluations, the IDS demonstrated strong results across multiple models with XGBoost, particularly in more demanding scenarios, outperforming other models with an accuracy of 97.33% and an AUC of 0.94. These findings underscore the potential of combining quantum-resistant encryption mechanisms with AI-driven IDS to create a robust, scalable, and secure communication framework for UAV networks, particularly within the high-performance requirements of 5G environments.

Generative Semantic Communications with Foundation Models: Perception-Error Analysis and Semantic-Aware Power Allocation

Generative foundation models can revolutionize the design of semantic communication (SemCom) systems allowing high fidelity exchange of semantic information at ultra low rates. In this work, a generative SemCom framework with pretrained foundation models is proposed, where both uncoded forward-with-error and coded discard-with-error schemes are developed for the semantic decoder. To characterize the impact of transmission reliability on the perceptual quality of the regenerated signal, their mathematical relationship is analyzed from a rate-distortion-perception perspective, which is proved to be non-decreasing. The semantic values are defined to measure the semantic information of multimodal semantic features accordingly. We also investigate semantic-aware power allocation problems aiming at power consumption minimization for ultra low rate and high fidelity SemComs. To solve these problems, two semantic-aware power allocation methods are proposed by leveraging the non-decreasing property of the perception-error relationship. Numerically, perception-error functions and semantic values of semantic data streams under both schemes for image tasks are obtained based on the Kodak dataset. Simulation results show that our proposed semanticaware method significantly outperforms conventional approaches, particularly in the channel-coded case (up to 90% power saving).

A Physical Layer Security Framework for IRS-Assisted Integrated Sensing and Semantic Communication Systems

In this paper, we propose a physical layer security (PLS) framework for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted integrated sensing and semantic communication (ISASC) system, where a multi-antenna dual-functional semantic base station (BS) serves multiple semantic communication users (SCUs) and monitors a potentially malicious sensing target (MST) in the presence of an eavesdropper (EVE). Both MST and EVE attempt to wiretap information from the signals transmitted to the SCUs. The deployment of the IRS not only enhances PLS by directing a strong beam towards the SCUs, but also improves the localization information for the target without disclosing information about the SCUs. To further strengthen PLS, we employ joint artificial noise (AN) and dedicated sensing signal (DSS), in addition to wiretap coding. To evaluate sensing accuracy, we derive the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for estimating the direction of arrival (DoA), and to assess the PLS level of the ISASC system, we determine a closed-form expression for the semantic secrecy rate (SSR). To achieve an optimal trade-off between these two competing objectives, we formulate a multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP) for the joint design of the BS's beamforming (BF) vectors and the IRS's phase shift vector. To tackle this MOOP problem, the $ε$-constraint method is employed, followed by an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm that leverages the classical successive convex approximation (SCA) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the baseline schemes, achieving a superior trade-off between SSR and CRB. Specifically, our proposed approach improves the sensing accuracy by 5 dB compared to the commonly adopted maximal ratio transmission (MRT) approach.

Generative AI-Enhanced Multi-Modal Semantic Communication in Internet of Vehicles: System Design and Methodologies

Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication supports numerous tasks, from driving safety to entertainment services. To achieve a holistic view, vehicles are typically equipped with multiple sensors to compensate for undetectable blind spots. However, processing large volumes of multi-modal data increases transmission load, while the dynamic nature of vehicular networks adds to transmission instability. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework, Generative Artificial intelligence (GAI)-enhanced multi-modal semantic communication (SemCom), referred to as G-MSC, designed to handle various vehicular network tasks by employing suitable analog or digital transmission. GAI presents a promising opportunity to transform the SemCom framework by significantly enhancing semantic encoding to facilitate the optimized integration of multi-modal information, enhancing channel robustness, and fortifying semantic decoding against noise interference. To validate the effectiveness of the G-MSC framework, we conduct a case study showcasing its performance in vehicular communication networks for predictive tasks. The experimental results show that the design achieves reliable and efficient communication in V2X networks. In the end, we present future research directions on G-MSC.

Deep Learning-Based Traffic-Aware Base Station Sleep Mode and Cell Zooming Strategy in RIS-Aided Multi-Cell Networks

Advances in wireless technology have significantly increased the number of wireless connections, leading to higher energy consumption in networks. Among these, base stations (BSs) in radio access networks (RANs) account for over half of the total energy usage. To address this, we propose a multi-cell sleep strategy combined with adaptive cell zooming, user association, and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to minimize BS energy consumption. This approach allows BSs to enter sleep during low traffic, while adaptive cell zooming and user association dynamically adjust coverage to balance traffic load and enhance data rates through RIS, minimizing the number of active BSs. However, it is important to note that the proposed method may achieve energy-savings at the cost of increased delay, requiring a trade-off between these two factors. Moreover, minimizing BS energy consumption under the delay constraint is a complicated non-convex problem. To address this issue, we model the RIS-aided multi-cell network as a Markov decision process (MDP) and use the proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithm to optimize sleep mode (SM), cell zooming, and user association. Besides, we utilize a double cascade correlation network (DCCN) algorithm to optimize the RIS reflection coefficients. Simulation results demonstrate that PPO balances energy-savings and delay, while DCCN-optimized RIS enhances BS energy-savings. Compared to systems optimised by the benchmark DQN algorithm, energy consumption is reduced by 49.61%

GSM: A GNN-based Space-MIMO Framework for Direct-to-Cell Communications

This paper proposes a graph neural network (GNN)-based space multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) framework, named GSM, for direct-to-cell communications, aiming to achieve distributed coordinated beamforming for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Firstly, a system model for LEO multi-satellite communications is established, where multiple LEO satellites collaborate to perform distributed beamforming and communicate with terrestrial user terminals coherently. Based on the system model, a weighted sum rate maximization problem is formulated. Secondly, a GNN-based method is developed to address the optimization problem. Particularly, the adopted neural network is composed of multiple identical GNNs, which are trained together and then deployed individually on each LEO satellite. Finally, the trained GNN is quantized and deployed on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to accelerate the inference by customizing the microarchitecture. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed GNN scheme outperforms the benchmark ones including maximum ratio transmission, zero forcing and minimum mean square error. Furthermore, experimental results show that the FPGA-based accelerator achieves remarkably low inference latency, ranging from 3.863 to 5.883 ms under a 10-ns target clock period with 8-bit fixed-point data representation.

EMF-Efficient MU-MIMO Networks: Harnessing Aerial RIS Technology

The rollout of the fifth-generation (5G) networks has raised some concerns about potential health effects from increased exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). To address these concerns, we design a novel EMF-aware architecture for uplink communications. Specifically, we propose an aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (ARIS) assisted multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, where the ARIS features a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) panel mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), offering a flexible and adaptive solution for reducing uplink EMF exposure. We formulate and solve a new problem to minimize the EMF exposure by optimizing the system parameters, such as transmit beamforming, resource allocation, transmit power, ARIS phase shifts, and ARIS trajectory. Our numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of EMF-aware transmission scheme over the benchmark methods, achieving EMF reductions of over 30% and 90% compared to the fixed ARIS and non-ARIS schemes, respectively.

Advanced Nonlinear SCMA Codebook Design Based on Lattice Constellations

The design of efficient sparse codebooks in sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system have attracted tremendous research attention in the past few years. This paper proposes a novel nonlinear SCMA (NL-SCMA) that can subsume the conventional SCMA system which is referred to as linear SCMA, as special cases for downlink channels. This innovative approach allows a direct mapping of users' messages to a superimposed codeword for transmission, eliminating the need of a codebook for each user. This mapping is referred to as nonlinear mapping (codebook) in this paper. Hence, the primary objective is to design the nonlinear mapping, rather than the linear codebook for each user. We leverage the Lattice constellation to design the superimposed constellation due to its advantages such as the minimum Euclidean distance (MED), constellation volume, design flexibility and shape gain. Then, by analyzing the error patterns of the Lattice-designed superimposed codewords with the aid of the pair-wise error probability, it is found that the MED of the proposed nonlinear codebook is lower bounded by the ``single error pattern''. To this end, an error pattern-inspired codebook design is proposed, which can achieve large MEDs of the nonlinear codebooks. Numerical results show that the proposed codebooks can achieve lower error rate performance over both Gaussian and Rayleigh fading channels than the-state-of-the-art linear codebooks.

Secure Semantic Communication over Wiretap Channel

Semantic communication is a new paradigm for information transmission that integrates the essential meaning (semantics) of the message into the communication process. However, like in classic wireless communications, the open nature of wireless channels poses security risks for semantic communications. In this paper, we characterize information-theoretic limits for the secure transmission of a semantic source over a wiretap channel. Under separate secrecy and distortion constrains for semantics and observed data, we present general inner and outer bounds on the rate-distortion-equivocation region. We also reduce the general region to the case of Gaussian source and Gaussian wiretap channel and provide numerical evaluations.

On Stochastic Fundamental Limits in a Downlink Integrated Sensing and Communication Network

This paper aims to analyze the stochastic performance of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system in a downlink scenario, where a base station (BS) transmits a dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) signal matrix, serving the purpose of transmitting communication data to the user while simultaneously sensing the angular location of a target. The channel between the BS and the user is modeled as a random channel with Rayleigh fading distribution, and the azimuth angle of the target is assumed to follow a uniform distribution. Due to the randomness inherent in the network, the challenge is to consider suitable performance metrics for this randomness. To address this issue, for users, we employ the user's rate outage probability (OP) and ergodic rate, while for target, we propose using the OP of the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the angle of arrival and the ergodic CRLB. We have obtained the expressions of these metrics for scenarios where the BS employs two different beamforming methods. Our approach to deriving these metrics involves computing the probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio for users and the CRLB for the target. We have demonstrated that the central limit theorem provides a viable approach for deriving these PDFs. In our numerical results, we demonstrate the trade-off between sensing and communication (S \& C) by characterizing the region of S \& C metrics and by obtaining the Pareto optimal boundary points, confirmed with simulations.

GBSense: A GHz-Bandwidth Compressed Spectrum Sensing System

This paper presents GBSense, an innovative compressed spectrum sensing system designed for GHz-bandwidth signals in dynamic spectrum access (DSA) applications. GBSense introduces an efficient approach to periodic nonuniform sampling, capturing wideband signals using significantly lower sampling rates compared to traditional Nyquist sampling. By integrating time-interleaved analog-to-digital conversion, GBSense overcomes the hardware complexity typically associated with traditional multicoset sampling, providing precise, real-time adjustable sampling patterns without the need for analog delay circuits. The system's ability to process signals with a 2 GHz radio frequency bandwidth using only a 400 MHz average sampling rate enables more efficient spectrum monitoring and access in wideband cognitive radios. Lab tests demonstrate 100\% accurate spectrum detection when the spectrum occupancy is below 100 MHz and over 80\% accuracy for occupancy up to 200 MHz. Additionally, an integrated system utilizing a low-power Raspberry Pi processor achieves a low processing latency of around 30 ms per frame, demonstrating the system's potential for real-time applications in cognitive radio networks, 5G, and future 6G infrastructures.

Generalizing Deep Learning-Based CSI Feedback in Massive MIMO via ID-Photo-Inspired Preprocessing

Deep learning (DL)-based channel state information (CSI) feedback has shown great potential in improving spectrum efficiency in massive MIMO systems. However, DL models optimized for specific environments often experience performance degradation in others due to model mismatch. To overcome this barrier in the practical deployment, we propose UniversalNet, an ID-photo-inspired universal CSI feedback framework that enhances model generalizability by standardizing the input format across diverse data distributions. Specifically, UniversalNet employs a standardized input format to mitigate the influence of environmental variability, coupled with a lightweight sparsity-aligning operation in the transformed sparse domain and marginal control bits for original format recovery. This enables seamless integration with existing CSI feedback models, requiring minimal modifications in preprocessing and postprocessing without updating neural network weights. Furthermore, we propose an efficient eigenvector joint optimization method to enhance the sparsity of the precoding matrix by projecting the channel correlation into the eigenspace, thus improving the implicit CSI compression efficiency. Test results demonstrate that UniversalNet effectively improves generalization performance and ensures precise CSI feedback, even in scenarios with limited training diversity and previously unseen CSI environments.

Semantic-Aware Power Allocation for Generative Semantic Communications with Foundation Models

Recent advancements in diffusion models have made a significant breakthrough in generative modeling. The combination of the generative model and semantic communication (SemCom) enables high-fidelity semantic information exchange at ultra-low rates. A novel generative SemCom framework for image tasks is proposed, wherein pre-trained foundation models serve as semantic encoders and decoders for semantic feature extractions and image regenerations, respectively. The mathematical relationship between the transmission reliability and the perceptual quality of the regenerated image and the semantic values of semantic features are modeled, which are obtained by conducting numerical simulations on the Kodak dataset. We also investigate the semantic-aware power allocation problem, with the objective of minimizing the total power consumption while guaranteeing semantic performance. To solve this problem, two semanticaware power allocation methods are proposed by constraint decoupling and bisection search, respectively. Numerical results show that the proposed semantic-aware methods demonstrate superior performance compared to the conventional one in terms of total power consumption.

EMF-Aware Waveform for Dual-functional Radar Communication Systems

Emerging dual-functional radar communication(RadCom) systems promise to revolutionize wireless systems by enabling radar sensing and communication on a shared platform, thereby enhancing spectral efficiency. However, the high transmit power required for efficient radar operation poses risks by potentially exceeding the electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure limits enforced by the regulations. To address this challenge, we propose an EMF-aware signalling design that enhances RadCom system performance while complying with EMF constraints. Our approach considers exposure levels not only experienced by network users but also in sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals, where the exposure must be further reduced. First, we model the exposure metric for the users and the sectors that encounter sensitive areas. Then, we design the waveform by exploiting the trade-off between radar and communication while satisfying the exposure constraints. We reformulate the problem as a convex optimization program and solve it in closed form using Karush Kuhn Tucker (KKT) conditions. The numerical results demonstrate the feasibility of developing a robust RadCom system with low electromagnetic (EM) radiations.
