Detection of off-pulse emission from PSR B0525+21 and PSR B2045-16

We report the detection of off-pulse emission from two long period pulsars PSR B0525+21 and PSR B2045-16 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We recorded high time resolution interferometric data at 325 MHz and gated the data offline to separate the on- and off-pulse sections of the pulsar. On imaging the two temporal sections separately, we detected a point source in the off-pulse images of both the pulsars coincident with the pulsar locations in the on-pulse images. The long periods (3.75 and 1.96 s respectively) and low spin-down energies (E ~ 10exp(31) erg s-1) of the two pulsars argue against a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) origin for the off-pulse emission. The derived estimates of the ISM particle density required to drive a PWN do not support such an interpretation. A magnetospheric origin for the off-pulse emission raises questions regarding the location of the emission region, which is an important input into pulsar emission models.

NLO Calculation of Prompt Photon Production in DIS at HERA

We present a NLO calculation of prompt photon production in DIS. The calculation involves direct, fragmentation and resolved contributions. It is performed in the virtual-photon proton center-of-mass system. A comparison of the theoretical results with HERA data is carried out.

Jet-jet and hadron-jet correlations in hadro- and electro-production

We discuss, in the framework of perturbative QCD at next to leading order, two related observables which are usually considered to provide tests of the BFKL dynamics : jet-jet correlations at Tevatron energies and forward particle-jet correlations at HERA. In the first case we study the rapidity gap dependence of the azimuthal correlations and find slightly too strong correlations at large gap. In the second case we discuss the cross section as well as the azimuthal correlations over a rapidity gap range of 5 units. We find that the requirement of a forward particle imposes strong kinematical constraints which distort the distributions, notably at small rapidity gaps. We also show that the decorrelation is stronger in electroproduction than in hadron-hadron collisions. Unfortunately no data are yet available for comparison.

Radiative Neutralino Production in Low Energy Supersymmetric Models

We study the production of the lightest neutralinos in the radiative process $e^+e^- \to \tildeχ^0_1 \tildeχ^0_1γ$ in low energy supersymmetric models for the International Linear Collider energies. This includes the minimal supersymmetric standard model as well as its extension with an additional chiral Higgs singlet superfield, the nonminimal supersymmetric standard model. We compare and contrast the dependence of the signal cross section on the parameters of the neutralino sector of the minimal and nonminimal supersymmetric standard model. We also consider the background to this process coming from the Standard Model process $e^+e^- \to ν\barνγ$, as well as from the radiative production of the scalar partners of the neutrinos (sneutrinos) $e^+e^- \to \tildeν\tildeν^\ast γ$, which can be a background to the radiative neutralino production when the sneutrinos decay invisibly. In low energy supersymmetric models radiative production of the lightest neutralinos may be the only channel to study supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model particles at the first stage of a linear collider, since heavier neutralinos, charginos and sleptons may be too heavy to be pair-produced at a $e^+ e^-$ machine with $\sqrt{s} =500\GeV$.

Fermionic un-particles, gauge interactions and the $β$ function

The dynamics of fermionic unparticles is developed from first principles. It is shown that any unparticle, whether fermionic or bosonic, can be recast in terms of a canonically quantized field, but with non-local interaction terms. We further develop a possible gauge theory for fermionic unparticles. Computing the consequent contribution of un-fermions to the $β$ function of the theory, it is shown that this can be viewed as the sum of two contributions, one fermion-like and the other scalar-like. However, if full conformal invariance is imposed, the latter vanishes identically. We discuss the consequences thereof as well as some general phenomenological issues.

Soft-collinear effects in prompt photon production

We extend next-to-leading logarithmic threshold and joint resummation for prompt photon production to include leading collinear effects. The impact of these effects is assessed for both fixed-target and collider kinematics. We find them in general to be small, but noticeable.

Deep inelastic scattering and forward neutral pion production at NLO

We present a detailed phenomenological study of forward hadron neutral pion production in deep inelastic scattering, with both the direct and the resolved contributions calculated to NLO accuracy. A comparison of the theoretical predictions for the various distributions with the H1 data and a study of stability of the QCD predictions under changes of scales is the focus of this study. We obtain a very good overall description of the recent H1 data with the choice of scale Q^2 + E^2_{perp}, in contrast to the (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 required earlier when the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. We find a more modest variation of the predictions, as the scale is changed from (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 to 2(Q^2 + E^2_{perp}), as compared to the case where the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. This variation is of the order of the rather large experimental errors. Unfortunately, this fact prevents us from concluding that perturbation theory gives an unambiguous prediction for forward particle production in deep inelastic scattering. However, the overall success of perturbative QCD in explaining the small x_{Bj} data means that perhaps a full resummation of the BFKL ladder is not called for. We notice the need for rather large resolved contributions to explain the data at low x_{Bj} even at somewhat larger Q^2 values.

On The Injection Spectrum of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays in the Top-Down Scenario

We analyze the uncertainties involved in obtaining the injection spectra of UHECR particles in the top-down scenario of their origin. We show that the DGLAP $Q^2$ evolution of fragmentation functions (FF) to $Q=M_X$ (mass of the X particle) from their initial values at low $Q$ is subject to considerable uncertainties. We therefore argue that, for $x\lsim 0.1$ (the $x$ region of interest for most large $M_X$ values of interest, $x\equiv 2E/M_X$ being the scaled energy variable), the FF obtained from DGLAP evolution is no more reliable than that provided, for example, by a simple Gaussian form (in the variable $\ln(1/x)$) obtained under the Modified Leading Log Approximation (MLLA). Additionally, we find that for $x\gsim0.1$, the evolution in $Q^2$ of the singlet FF, which determines the injection spectrum, is ``minimal'' -- the singlet FF changes by barely a factor of 2 after evolving it over $\sim$ 14 orders of magnitude in $Q\sim M_X$. We, therefore, argue that as long as the measurement of the UHECR spectrum above $\sim10^{20}\ev$ is going to remain uncertain by a factor of 2 or larger, it is good enough for most practical purposes to directly use any one of the available initial parametrisations of the FFs in the $x$ region $x\gsim0.1$ based on low energy data even without evolving them to the requisite $Q^2$ value.

An NLO calculation of the electroproduction of large-E_\bot hadrons

We present a Next-to-Leading Order calculation of the cross section for the leptoproduction of large-$E_{\bot}$ hadrons and we compare our predictions with H1 data on the forward production of $π^0$. We find large higher order corrections and an important sensitivity to the renormalization and factorization scales. These large corrections are shown to arise in part from BFKL-like diagrams at the lowest order.

$η_c$ production and dimuon enhancement in heavy ion collisions

Dilepton production in heavy ion collisions, in the Intermediate Mass Region (IMR) has consistently shown an excess over theoretical estimates. An attempt to understand this discrepancy between the observed dilepton pairs and the theoretical estimate is made here through the production of the $η_c$ meson and estimates obtained by NRQCD calculations. We find that $η_c$ production offers a satisfactory quantitative picture for explaining the discrepancy.

NLO corrections to ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleon scattering, shadowing and small x

We reconsider the Standard Model interactions of ultra-high energy neutrinos with matter. The next to leading order QCD corrections are presented for charged-current and neutral-current processes. Contrary to popular expectations, these corrections are found to be quite substantial, especially for very large (anti-) neutrino energies. Hence, they need to be taken into account in any search for new physics effects in high-energy neutrino interactions. In our extrapolation of the parton densities to kinematical regions as yet unexplored directly in terrestrial accelerators, we are guided by double asymptotic scaling in the large Q^2 and small Bjorken x region and to models of saturation in the low Q^2 and low x regime. The sizes of the consequent uncertainties are commented upon. We also briefly discuss some variables which are insensitive to higher order QCD corrections and are hence suitable in any search for new physics.

Dileptons from $η_c$ in Nucleus-Nucleus collisions

Preliminary estimates suggest that excess dimuon production with invariant mass in the range 1.5 -- 2.5 GeV in nucleus-nucleus collisions can be explained on the basis of $η_c$ production. This appears to be consistent with all the peripheral and central collision data with various nuclei such as S-U at 200 GeV/nucleon except for the central collision data on Pb-Pb at 158 GeV/nucleon. Some explanations based on glueball production for Pb-Pb data are discussed.

Hints of higher twist effects in the slope of the proton structure function

We critically analyse the data available on the reduced cross-section in deeply inelastic $e p$ scattering from the H1 collaboration at HERA. We use available data on the longitudinal structure function to deduce the nature of $\d F_2/\d\ln Q^2$ at different $Q^2$ for fixed values of $x$ near $x \sim 10^{-4}$. We present the results in a manner which effectively isolates possible higher twist effects in the structure function $F_2$.

Double Asymptotic Scaling in Drell-Yan Processes

Double scaling may be observed in the Drell-Yan process at the Tevatron and in the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider in a window of masses. In the double scaling limit of the cross section, the higher order QCD corrections are quite large, and are driven by the rise in gluon densities in the double scaling regime. The naive parton model cannot be valid even at asymptotic energies in the region of phase space where double scaling holds.

J/psi+gamma production at the LHC

The associated production of J/psi + gamma at the LHC is studied within the NRQCD framework. The signal we focus on is the production of a J/psi and an isolated photon produced back-to-back, with their transverse momenta balanced. It is shown that even for very large values of transverse momentum (pT of the order of 50 GeV) the dominant contribution to this process is not fragmentation. This is because of the fact that fragmentation-type contributions to the cross-section come from only a q q(bar) initial state, which is suppressed at the LHC. We identify gg-initiated diagrams higher-order in alpha(s) which do have fragmentation-type vertices. We find, however, that the contribution of these diagrams is negligibly small.

Low $x$ physics and Structure Functions

In this talk I review the behaviour of structure functions at low values of Bjorken $x$ and discuss the theoretical underpinnings with particular attention to resummation schemes. I present the need for 'less inclusive' events to distinguish between various resummation schemes and discuss the various difficulties in differentiating experimentally between different schemes.

Infrared Behaviour of Systems With Goldstone Bosons

We develop various complementary concepts and techniques for handling quantum fluctuations of Goldstone bosons. We emphasise that one of the consequences of the masslessness of Goldstone bosons is that the longitudinal fluctuations also have a diverging susceptibility characterised by an anomalous dimension $(d-2)$ in space-time dimensions $2<d<4$.In $d=4$ these fluctuations diverge logarithmically in the infrared region. We show the generality of this phenomenon by providing three arguments based on i). Renormalization group flows, ii). Ward identities, and iii). Schwinger-Dyson equations. We obtain an explicit form for the generating functional of one-particle irreducible vertices of the O(N) (non)--linear $σ$--models in the leading 1/N approximation. We show that this incorporates all infrared behaviour correctly both in linear and non-linear $σ$-- models. Our techniques provide an alternative to chiral perturbation theory. Some consequences are discussed briefly.
