Higher rank Segre integrals over the Hilbert scheme of points

Let S be a nonsingular projective surface. Each vector bundle V on S of rank s induces a tautological vector bundle over the Hilbert scheme of n points of S. When s=1, the top Segre classes of the tautological bundles are given by a recently proven formula conjectured in 1999 by M. Lehn. We calculate here the Segre classes of tautological bundles for all ranks s over all K-trivial surfaces. Furthermore, in rank s=2, the Segre integrals are determined for all surfaces, thus establishing a full analogue of Lehn's formula. We also give conjectural formulas for certain series of Verlinde Euler characteristics over the Hilbert schemes of points.

Tevelev degrees and Hurwitz moduli spaces

We interpret the degrees which arise in Tevelev's study of scattering amplitudes in terms of moduli spaces of Hurwitz covers. Via excess intersection theory, the boundary geometry of the Hurwitz moduli space yields a simple recursion for the Tevelev degrees (together with their natural two parameter generalization). We find exact solutions which specialize to Tevelev's formula in his cases and connect to the projective geometry of lines and Castelnuovo's classical count of linear series in other cases. For almost all values, the calculation of the two parameter generalization of the Tevelev degree is new. A related count of refined Dyck paths is solved along the way.

Quot schemes of curves and surfaces: virtual classes, integrals, Euler characteristics

We compute tautological integrals over Quot schemes on curves and surfaces. After obtaining several explicit formulas over Quot schemes of dimension 0 quotients on curves (and finding a new symmetry), we apply the results to tautological integrals against the virtual fundamental classes of Quot schemes of dimension 0 and 1 quotients on surfaces (using also universality, torus localization, and cosection localization). The virtual Euler characteristics of Quot schemes of surfaces, a new theory parallel to the Vafa-Witten Euler characteristics of the moduli of bundles, is defined and studied. Complete formulas for the virtual Euler characteristics are found in the case of dimension 0 quotients on surfaces. Dimension 1 quotients are studied on K3 surfaces and surfaces of general type with connections to the Kawai-Yoshioka formula and the Seiberg-Witten invariants respectively. The dimension 1 theory is completely solved for minimal surfaces of general type admitting a nonsingular canonical curve. Along the way, we find a new connection between weighted tree counting and multivariate Fuss-Catalan numbers which is of independent interest.

Rationality of descendent series for Hilbert and Quot schemes of surfaces

Quot schemes of quotients of a trivial bundle of arbitrary rank on a nonsingular projective surface X carry perfect obstruction theories and virtual fundamental classes whenever the quotient sheaf has at most 1-dimensional support. The associated generating series of virtual Euler characteristics was conjectured to be a rational function when X is simply connected. We conjecture here the rationality of more general descendent series with insertions obtained from the Chern characters of the tautological sheaf. We prove the rationality of descendent series in Hilbert scheme cases for all curve classes and in Quot scheme cases when the curve class is 0.

The virtual K-theory of Quot schemes of surfaces

We study virtual invariants of Quot schemes parametrizing quotients of dimension at most 1 of the trivial sheaf of rank N on nonsingular projective surfaces. We conjecture that the generating series of virtual K-theoretic invariants are given by rational functions. We prove rationality for several geometries including punctual quotients for all smooth projective surfaces and dimension 1 quotients for surfaces X with p_g>0. We also show that the generating series of virtual cobordism classes can be irrational. Given a K-theory class on X of rank r, we associate natural series of virtual Segre and Verlinde numbers. We show that the Segre and Verlinde series match in the following three cases: Quot schemes of dimension 0 quotients, Hilbert schemes of points and curves over surfaces with p_g>0, Quot schemes of minimal elliptic surfaces for quotients supported on fiber classes. Moreover, for punctual quotients of the trivial sheaf of rank N, we prove a new symmetry of the Segre/Verlinde series exchanging r and N. The Segre/Verlinde statements have analogues for punctual Quot schemes over curves.

Zero cycles on the moduli space of curves

While the Chow groups of 0-dimensional cycles on the moduli spaces of Deligne-Mumford stable pointed curves can be very complicated, the span of the 0-dimensional tautological cycles is always of rank 1. The question of whether a given moduli point [C,p_1,...,p_n] determines a tautological 0-cycle is subtle. Our main results address the question for curves on rational and K3 surfaces. If C is a nonsingular curve on a nonsingular rational surface of positive degree with respect to the anticanonical class, we prove [C,p_1,...,p_n] is tautological if the number of markings does not exceed the virtual dimension in Gromov-Witten theory of the moduli space of stable maps. If C is a nonsingular curve on a K3 surface, we prove [C,p_1,...,p_n] is tautological if the number of markings does not exceed the genus of C and every marking is a Beauville-Voisin point. The latter result provides a connection between the rank 1 tautological 0-cycles on the moduli of curves and the rank 1 tautological 0-cycles on K3 surfaces. Several further results related to tautological 0-cycles on the moduli spaces of curves are proven. Many open questions concerning the moduli points of curves on other surfaces (Abelian, Enriques, general type) are discussed.

Holomorphic anomaly equations for the formal quintic

We define a formal Gromov-Witten theory of the quintic 3-fold via localization on CP4. Our main result is a direct geometric proof of holomorphic anomaly equations for the formal quintic in precisely the same form as predicted by B-model physics for the true Gromov-Witten theory of the quintic 3-fold. The results suggest that the formal quintic and the true quintic theories should be related by transformations which respect the holomorphic anomaly equations. Such a relationship has been recently found by Q. Chen, S. Guo, F. Janda, and Y. Ruan via the geometry of new moduli spaces.

GW/PT descendent correspondence via vertex operators

We propose an explicit formula for the GW/PT descendent correspondence in the stationary case for nonsingular projective 3-folds. The formula, written in terms of vertex operators, is found by studying the 1-leg geometry. We prove the proposal for all nonsingular projective toric 3-folds. An application to the Virasoro constraints for the stationary descendent theory of stable pairs will appear in a sequel.

The Hilb/Sym correspondence for C2: descendents and Fourier-Mukai

We study here the crepant resolution correspondence for the torus equivariant descendent Gromov-Witten theories of Hilb(C2) and Sym(C2).The descendent correspondence is obtained from our previous matching of the associated CohFTs by applying Givental's quantization formula to a specific symplectic transformation K. The first result of the paper is an explicit computation of K. Our main result then establishes a fundamental relationship between the Fourier-Mukai equivalence of the associated derived categories (by Bridgeland, King, and Reid) and the symplectic transformation K via Iritani's integral structure. The results use Haiman's Fourier-Mukai calculations and are exactly aligned with Iritani's point of view on crepant resolution.

Higher genus Gromov-Witten theory of the Hilbert scheme of points of the plane and CohFTs associated to local curves

We study the higher genus equivariant Gromov-Witten theory of the Hilbert scheme of n points of the plane. Since the equivariant quantum cohomology is semisimple, the higher genus theory is determined by an R-matrix via the Givental-Teleman classification of Cohomological Field Theories (CohFTs). We uniquely specify the required R-matrix by explicit data in degree 0. As a consequence, we lift the basic triangle of equivalences relating the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme and the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for 3-fold theories of local curves to a triangle of equivalences in all higher genera. The proof uses the previously determined analytic continuation of the fundamental solution of the QDE of the Hilbert scheme. The GW/DT edge of the triangle in higher genus concerns new CohFTs defined by varying the 3-fold local curve in the moduli space of stable curves. The equivariant orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of the symmetric product of the plane is also shown to be equivalent to the theories of the triangle in all genera. The result establishes a complete case of the crepant resolution conjecture.

The quantum differential equation of the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane

We discuss here basic properties of the quantum differential equation of the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane. Our emphasis is on intertwining operators (which shift equivariant parameters) and their applications. In particular, we obtain an exact solution to the connection problem from the Donaldson-Thomas point q=0 to the Gromov-Witten point q=-1. The paper is an expanded version of what was once the last Section of arXiv:math/0411210.

Crepant resolution and the holomorphic anomaly equation for C^3/Z_3

We study the orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of the quotient C^3/Z_3 in all genera. Our first result is a proof of the holomorphic anomaly equations in the precise form predicted by B-model physics. Our second result is an exact crepant resolution correspondence relating the Gromov-Witten theories of C^3/Z_3 and local CP2. The proof of the correspondence requires an identity proven in the Appendix by T. Coates and H. Iritani.

The combinatorics of Lehn's conjecture

Let S be a smooth projective surface equipped with a line bundle H. Lehn's conjecture is a formula for the top Segre class of the tautological bundle associated to H on the Hilbert scheme of points of S. Voisin has recently reduced Lehn's conjecture to the vanishing of certain coefficients of special power series. The first result of this short note is a proof of the vanishings required by Voisin by residue calculations (A. Szenes and M. Vergne have independently found the same proof). Our second result is an elementary solution of the parallel question for the top Segre class on the symmetric power of a smooth projective curve C associated to a higher rank vector bundle V on C. Finally, we propose a complete conjecture for the top Segre class on the Hilbert scheme of points of S associated to a higher rank vector bundle on S in the K-trivial case.

Stable quotients and the holomorphic anomaly equation

We study the fundamental relationship between stable quotient invariants and the B-model for local CP2 in all genera. Our main result is a direct geometric proof of the holomorphic anomaly equation in the precise form predicted by B-model physics. The method yields new holomorphic anomaly equations for an infinite class of twisted theories on projective spaces. An example of such a twisted theory is the formal quintic defined by a hyperplane section of CP4 in all genera via the Euler class of a complex. The formal quintic theory is found to satisfy the holomorphic anomaly equations conjectured for the true quintic theory. Therefore, the formal quintic theory and the true quintic theory should be related by transformations which respect the holomorphic anomaly equations.

Cohomological field theory calculations

Cohomological field theories (CohFTs) were defined in the mid 1990s by Kontsevich and Manin to capture the formal properties of the virtual fundamental class in Gromov-Witten theory. A beautiful classification result for semisimple CohFTs (via the action of the Givental group) was proven by Teleman in 2012. The Givental-Teleman classification can be used to explicitly calculate the full CohFT in many interesting cases not approachable by earlier methods. My goal here is to present an introduction to these ideas together with a survey of the calculations of the CohFTs obtained from Witten's classes on the moduli spaces of r-spin curves, Chern characters of the Verlinde bundles on the moduli of curves, and Gromov-Witten classes of the Hilbert schemes of points of the plane. The subject is full of basic open questions.

Descendents for stable pairs on 3-folds

We survey here the construction and the basic properties of descendent invariants in the theory of stable pairs on nonsingular projective 3-folds. The main topics covered are the rationality of the generating series, the functional equation, the Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for descendents, the Virasoro constraints, and the connection to the virtual fundamental class of the stable pairs moduli space in algebraic cobordism. In all of these directions, the proven results constitute only a small part of the conjectural framework. A central goal of the article is to introduce the open questions as simply and directly as possible.

Curve counting on abelian surfaces and threefolds

We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

A Fock space approach to Severi degrees

The classical Severi degree counts the number of algebraic curves of fixed genus and class passing through points in a surface. We express the Severi degrees of CP1 x CP1 as matrix elements of the exponential of a single operator M on Fock space. The formalism puts Severi degrees on a similar footing as the more developed study of Hurwitz numbers of coverings of curves. The pure genus 1 invariants of the product E x CP1 (with E an elliptic curve) are solved via an exact formula for the eigenvalues of M to initial order. The Severi degrees of CP2 are also determined by M via the (-1)^(d-1)/d^2 disk multiple cover formula for Calabi-Yau 3-fold geometries.
