Descendant invariants and characteristic numbers

On a stack of stable maps, the psi classes are modified by subtracting certain boundary divisors. These modified psi classes are compatible with forgetful morphisms, and are well-suited to enumerative geometry: tangency conditions allow simple expressions in terms of modified psi classes. Topological recursion relations are established among their top products in genus zero, yielding effective recursions for characteristic numbers of rational curves in any projective homogeneous variety. In higher genus, the obtained numbers are only virtual, due to contributions from spurious components of the space of maps. For the projective plane, the necessary corrections are determined in genus 1 and 2 to give the characteristic numbers in these cases.

Rational curves on hypersurfaces [after A. Givental]

This article accompanies my June 1998 seminaire Bourbaki talk on Givental's work. After a quick review of descendent integrals in Gromov-Witten theory, I discuss Givental's formalism relating hypergeometric series to solutions of quantum differential equations arising from hypersurfaces in projective space. A particular case of this relationship is a proof of the Mirror prediction for the numbers of rational curves on the Calabi-Yau quintic 3-fold. The approach taken here is entirely algebro-geometric and relies upon a localization formula on the moduli space of stable genus 0 maps to projective space. A different proof of the quintic Mirror prediction may be found in the work of Lian, Liu, and Yau.

A descendent relation in genus 2

A new codimension 2 relation among descendent strata in the moduli space of stable, 3-pointed, genus 2 curves is found. The space of pointed admissible double covers is used in the calculation. The resulting differential equations satisfied by the genus 2 gravitational potentials of varieties in Gromov-Witten theory are described. These are analogous to the WDVV-equations in genus 0 and Getzler's equations in genus 1. As an application, genus 2 descendent invariants of the projective plane are determined, including the classical genus 2 Severi degrees.

A geometric construction of Getzler's relation

A geometric construction of Getzler's cohomological relation in the moduli space of 4 pointed elliptic curves is given by a push-forward of a natural rational equivalence in a space of admissible covers. In particular, Getzler's relation is shown to be a rational equivalence. The recursion for the elliptic Gromov-Witten invariants of P^2 predicted by Eguchi, Hori, and Xiong from the Virasoro conjecture is proven via Getzler's equation and the WDVV-equations.

The quantum cohomology of blow-ups of P^2 and enumerative geometry

We compute the Gromov-Witten invariants of the projective plane blown up in r general points. These are determined by associativity from r+1 intial values. Applications are given to the enumeration of rational plane curves with prescribed multiplicities at fixed general points. We show that the numbers are enumerative if at least one of the prescribed multiplicities is 1 or 2. In particular, all the invariants for r<=8 (the Del Pezzo case) are enumerative.
