Normalized Leonard pairs and Askey-Wilson relations

Let $V$ denote a vector space with finite positive dimension, and let $(A,B)$ denote a Leonard pair on $V$. As is known, the linear transformations $A,B$ satisfy the Askey-Wilson relations A^2B -bABA +BA^2 -g(AB+BA) -rB = hA^2 +wA +eI, B^2A -bBAB +AB^2 -h(AB+BA) -sA = gB^2 +wB +fI, for some scalars $b,g,h,r,s,w,e,f$. The scalar sequence is unique if the dimension of $V$ is at least 4. If $c,c*,t,t*$ are scalars and $t,t*$ are not zero, then $(tA+c,t*B+c*)$ is a Leonard pair on $V$ as well. These affine transformations can be used to bring the Leonard pair or its Askey-Wilson relations into a convenient form. This paper presents convenient normalizations of Leonard pairs by the affine transformations, and exhibits explicit Askey-Wilson relations satisfied by them.

Uniform convergence of hypergeometric series

The considered problem is uniform convergence of sequences of hypergeometric series. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for uniformly dominated convergence of infinite sums of proper bivariate hypergeometric terms. These conditions can be checked algorithmically. Hence the results can be applied in Zeilberger type algorithms for nonterminating hypergeometric series.

Contiguous relations of hypergeometric series

The 15 Gauss contiguous relations for ${}_2F_1$ hypergeometric series imply that any three ${}_2F_1$ series whose corresponding parameters differ by integers are linearly related (over the field of rational functions in the parameters). We prove several properties of coefficients of these general contiguous relations, and use the results to propose effective ways to compute contiguous relations. We also discuss contiguous relations of generalized and basic hypergeometric functions, and several applications of them.

Quadratic Transformations of the Sixth Painleve' Equation with Application to Algebraic Solutions

In 1991, one of the authors showed the existence of quadratic transformations between the Painleve' VI equations with local monodromy differences $(1/2,a,b,\pm 1/2)$ and $(a,a,b,b)$. In the present paper we give concise forms of these transformations. %, up to fractional-linear transformations. They are related to the %better known quadratic transformations obtained by Manin and Ramani-Grammaticos-Tamizhmani via Okamoto transformations. To avoid cumbersome expressions with differentiation, we use contiguous relations instead of the Okamoto transformations. The 1991 transformation is particularly important as it can be realized as a quadratic-pull back transformation of isomonodromic Fuchsian equations. The new formulas are illustrated by derivation of explicit expressions for several complicated algebraic Painleve' VI functions.

Transformations of some Gauss hypergeometric functions

This paper presents explicit algebraic transformations of some Gauss hypergeometric functions. Specifically, the transformations considered apply to hypergeometric solutions of hypergeometric differential equations with the local exponent differences $1/K,1/L,1/M$ such that $K,L,M$ are positive integers and $1/K+1/L+1/M<1$. All algebraic transformations of these Gauss hypergeometric functions are considered. We show that apart from classical transformations of degree 2, 3, 4, 6 there are several other transformations of degree 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 18, 24. Besides, we present an algorithm to compute relevant Belyi functions explicitly.

Degenerate Gauss hypergeometric functions

This is a study of terminating and ill-defined Gauss hypergeometric functions. Corresponding hypergeometric equations have a degenerate set of of 24 Kummer's solutions. We describe those solutions and relations between them.

Expressions for values of the gamma function

This paper presents expressions for gamma values at rational points with the denominator dividing 24 or 60. These gamma values are expressed in terms of 10 distinct gamma values and rational powers of $π$ and a few real algebraic numbers. Our elementary list of formulas can be conveniently used to evaluate, for example, algebraic Gauss hypergeometric functions by the Gauss identity. Also, algebraic independence of gamma values and their relation to the elliptic K-function are briefly discussed.

Leonard pairs and the Askey-Wilson relations

Let K denote a field and let $V$ denote a vector space over K with finite positive dimension. We consider an ordered pair of linear transformations $A:V\to V$ and $A^*:V\to V$ which satisfy the following two properties: (i) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is irreducible tridiagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is diagonal. (ii) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A^*$ is irreducible tridiagonal and the matrix representing $A$ is diagonal. We call such a pair a Leonard pair on $V$. Referring to the above Leonard pair, we show there exists a sequence of scalars $β,γ,γ^*, \varrho,\varrho^*,ω, η, η^*$ taken from K such that both (i) A^2 A^*-βA A^*A+A^*A^2-γ(AA^*+A^*A) -\varrho A^* =γ^*A^2+ωA+\etaI; (ii) A^{*2}A-βA^*AA^*+AA^{*2}-γ^*(A^*A+AA^*) -\varrho^*A =γA^{*2}+ωA^*+η^*I. The sequence is uniquely determined by the Leonard pair provided the dimension of $V$ is at least 4. The equations above are called the Askey-Wilson relations.

Parabolic Cylinder Functions: Examples of Error Bounds For Asymptotic Expansions

Several asymptotic expansions of parabolic cylinder functions are discussed and error bounds for remainders in the expansions are presented. In particular Poincar{é}-type expansions for large values of the argument $z$ and uniform expansions for large values of the parameter are considered. The expansions are based on those given in Olver(1959) and on modifications of these expansions given in Temme(2000). Computer algebra techniques are used for obtaining representations of the bounds and for numerical computations.

Symbolic Evaluation of Coefficients in Airy-type Asymptotic Expansions

Computer algebra algorithms are developed for evaluating the coefficients in Airy-type asymptotic expansions that are obtained from integrals with a large parameter. The coefficients are defined from recursive schemes obtained from integration by parts. An application is given for the Weber parabolic cylinder function.

A generalization of Kummer's identity

The well-known Kummer's formula evaluates the hypergeometric series 2F1(A,B;C;-1) when the relation B-A+C=1 holds. This paper deals with evaluation of 2F1(-1) series in the case when C-A+B is an integer. Such a series is expressed as a sum of two Γ-terms multiplied by terminating 3F2(1) series. A few such formulas were essentially known to Whipple in 1920's. Here we give a simpler and more complete overview of this type of evaluations. Additionally, algorithmic aspects of evaluating hypergeometric series are considered. We illustrate Zeilberger's method and discuss its applicability to non-terminating series, and present a couple of similar generalizations of other known formulas.
