Analytic solutions for locally optimal designs for gamma models having linear predictor without intercept

The gamma model is a generalized linear model for gamma-distributed outcomes. The model is widely applied in psychology, ecology or medicine. In this paper we focus on gamma models having a linear predictor without intercept. For a specific scenario sets of locally D- and A-optimal designs are to be developed. Recently, Gaffke et al. (2018) established a complete class and an essentially complete class of designs for gamma models to obtain locally D-optimal designs. However to extend this approach to gamma model without an intercept term is complicated. To solve that further techniques have to be developed in the current work. Further, by a suitable transformation between gamma models with and without intercept optimality results may be transferred from one model to the other. Additionally by means of The General Equivalence Theorem optimality can be characterized for multiple regression by a system of polynomial inequalities which can be solved analytically or by computer algebra. By this necessary and sufficient conditions on the parameter values can be obtained for the local D-optimality of particular designs. The robustness of the derived designs with respect to misspecifications of the initial parameter values is examined by means of their local D-efficiencies.

Optimal designs for $K$-factor two-level models with first-order interactions on a symmetrically restricted design region

We develop $D$-optimal designs for linear models with first-order interactions on a subset of the $2^K$ full factorial design region, when both the number of factors set to the higher level and the number of factors set to the lower level are simultaneously bounded by the same threshold. It turns out that in the case of narrow margins the optimal design is concentrated only on those design points, for which either the threshold is attained or the numbers of high and low levels are as equal as possible. In the case of wider margins the settings are more spread and the resulting optimal designs are as efficient as a full factorial design. These findings also apply to other optimality criteria.

Optimal designs for two-level main effects models on a restricted design region

We develop $D$-optimal designs for linear main effects models on a subset of the $2^K$ full factorial design region, when the number of factors set to the higher level is bounded. It turns out that in the case of narrow margins only those settings of the design points are admitted, where the number of high levels is equal to the upper or lower bounds, while in the case of wide margins the settings are more spread and the resulting optimal designs are as efficient as a full factorial design. These findings also apply to other optimality criteria.

Optimal Designs for the Generalized Partial Credit Model

Analyzing ordinal data becomes increasingly important in psychology, especially in the context of item response theory. The generalized partial credit model (GPCM) is probably the most widely used ordinal model and finds application in many large scale educational assessment studies such as PISA. In the present paper, optimal test designs are investigated for estimating persons' abilities with the GPCM for calibrated tests when item parameters are known from previous studies. We will derive that local optimality may be achieved by assigning non-zero probability only to the first and last category independently of a person's ability. That is, when using such a design, the GPCM reduces to the dichotomous 2PL model. Since locally optimal designs require the true ability to be known, we consider alternative Bayesian design criteria using weight distributions over the ability parameter space. For symmetric weight distributions, we derive necessary conditions for the optimal one-point design of two response categories to be Bayes optimal. Furthermore, we discuss examples of common symmetric weight distributions and investigate, in which cases the necessary conditions are also sufficient. Since the 2PL model is a special case of the GPCM, all of these results hold for the 2PL model as well.

D-Optimal Design for the Rasch Counts Model with Multiple Binary Predictors

In this paper, we derive optimal designs for the Rasch Poisson counts model and the Rasch Poisson-Gamma counts model incorporating several binary predictors for the difficulty parameter. To efficiently estimate the regression coefficients of the predictors, locally D-optimal designs are developed. After an introduction to the Rasch Poisson counts model and the Rasch Poisson-Gamma counts model we will specify these models as a particular generalized linear mixed model. Based on this embedding optimal designs for both models including several binary explanatory variables will be presented. Therefore, we will derive conditions on the effect sizes of certain designs to be locally D-optimal. Finally, it is pointed out that the results derived for the Rasch Poisson models can be applied for more general Poisson regression models which should receive more attention in future psychological research.

Locally $D$-optimal Designs for a Wider Class of Non-linear Models on the $k$-dimensional Ball with applications to logit and probit models

In this paper we extend the results of Radloff and Schwabe (2018), which could be applied for example to Poisson regression, negative binomial regression and proportional hazard models with censoring, to a wider class of non-linear multiple regression models. This includes the binary response models with logit and probit link besides other. For this class of models we derive (locally) $D$-optimal designs when the design region is a $k$-dimensional ball. For the corresponding construction we make use of the concept of invariance and equivariance in the context of optimal designs as in our previous paper. In contrast to the former results the designs will not necessarily be exact designs in all cases. Instead approximate designs can appear. These results can be generalized to arbitrary ellipsoidal design regions.

Optimal Designs for Poisson Count Data with Gamma Block Effects

The Poisson-Gamma model is a generalization of the Poisson model, which can be used for modelling count data. We show that the $D$-optimality criterion for the Poisson-Gamma model is equivalent to a combined weighted optimality criterion of $D$-optimality and $D_s$-optimality for the Poisson model. Moreover, we determine the $D$-optimal designs for the Poisson-Gamma model for multiple regression with an arbitrary number of covariates, obtaining the $D_s$-optimal designs for the Poisson and Poisson-Gamma model as a special case. For linear optimality criteria like $L$- and $c$-optimality it is shown that the optimal designs in the Poisson and Poisson-Gamma model coincide.

Optimal Design in Hierarchical Models with application in Multi-center Trials

Hierarchical random effect models are used for different purposes in clinical research and other areas. In general, the main focus is on population parameters related to the expected treatment effects or group differences among all units of an upper level (e.g. subjects in many settings). Optimal design for estimation of population parameters are well established for many models. However, optimal designs for the prediction for the individual units may be different. Several settings are identiffed in which individual prediction may be of interest. In this paper we determine optimal designs for the individual predictions, e.g. in multi-center trials, and compare them to a conventional balanced design with respect to treatment allocation. Our investigations show, that balanced designs are far from optimal if the treatment effects vary strongly as compared to the residual error and more subjects should be recruited to the active (new) treatment in multi-center trials. Nevertheless, effciency loss may be limited resulting in a moderate sample size increase when individual predictions are foreseen with a balanced allocation.

Locally $D$-optimal Designs for Non-linear Models on the $k$-dimensional Ball

In this paper we construct (locally) $D$-optimal designs for a wide class of non-linear multiple regression models, when the design region is a $k$-dimensional ball. For this construction we make use of the concept of invariance and equivariance in the context of optimal designs. As examples we consider Poisson and negative binomial regression as well as proportional hazard models with censoring. By generalisation we can extend these results to arbitrary ellipsoids.

Algebraic geometry of Poisson regression

Designing experiments for generalized linear models is difficult because optimal designs depend on unknown parameters. Here we investigate local optimality. We propose to study for a given design its region of optimality in parameter space. Often these regions are semi-algebraic and feature interesting symmetries. We demonstrate this with the Rasch Poisson counts model. For any given interaction order between the explanatory variables we give a characterization of the regions of optimality of a special saturated design. This extends known results from the case of no interaction. We also give an algebraic and geometric perspective on optimality of experimental designs for the Rasch Poisson counts model using polyhedral and spectrahedral geometry.
