Scaling Algebras and Renormalization Group in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory. II. Instructive Examples

The concept of scaling algebra provides a novel framework for the general structural analysis and classification of the short distance properties of algebras of local observables in relativistic quantum field theory. In the present article this method is applied to the simple example of massive free field theory in s = 1,2 and 3 spatial dimensions. Not quite unexpectedly, one obtains for s = 2,3 in the scaling (short distance) limit the algebra of local observables in massless free field theory. The case s =1 offers, however, some surprises. There the algebra of observables acquires in the scaling limit a non-trivial center and describes charged physical states satisfying Gauss' law. The latter result is of relevance for the interpretation of the Schwinger model at short distances and illustrates the conceptual and computational virtues of the method.

Scaling algebras, the renormalization group and the principle of local stability in algebraic quantum field theory

We summarize the new scaling algebra approach to the structural analysis of the short distance behaviour of quantum field theories in the operator algebraic formulation which has recently been proposed by D. Buchholz, R. Verch (Rev. Math. Phys. 7(1995) 1195), and further studied by D. Buchholz (Ann. Inst. H. Poincare' 64(1996) 433, Nucl. Phys. B469(1996) 333). We also report on an extension of this framework to quantum field theory in curved spacetime.

Continuity of symplectically adjoint maps and the algebraic structure of Hadamard vacuum representations for quantum fields on curved spacetime

We derive for a pair of operators on a symplectic space which are adjoints of each other with respect to the symplectic form (that is, they are sympletically adjoint) that, if they are bounded for some scalar product on the symplectic space dominating the symplectic form, then they are bounded with respect to a one-parametric family of scalar products canonically associated with the initially given one, among them being its ``purification''. As a typical example we consider a scalar field on a globally hyperbolic spacetime governed by the Klein-Gordon equation; the classical system is described by a symplectic space and the temporal evolution by symplectomorphisms (which are symplectically adjoint to their inverses). A natural scalar product is that inducing the classical energy norm, and an application of the above result yields that its ``purification'' induces on the one-particle space of the quantized system a topology which coincides with that given by the two-point functions of quasifree Hadamard states. These findings will be shown to lead to new results concerning the structure of the local (von Neumann) observable-algebras in representations of quasifree Hadamard states of the Klein-Gordon field in an arbitrary globally hyperbolic spacetime, such as local definiteness, local primarity and Haag-duality (and also split- and type III_1-properties). A brief review of this circle of notions, as well as of properties of Hadamard states, forms part of the article.

Scaling Algebras and Renormalization Group in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory

For any given algebra of local observables in Minkowski space an associated scaling algebra is constructed on which renormalization group (scaling) transformations act in a canonical manner. The method can be carried over to arbitrary spacetime manifolds and provides a framework for the systematic analysis of the short distance properties of local quantum field theories. It is shown that every theory has a (possibly non-unique) scaling limit which can be classified according to its classical or quantum nature. Dilation invariant theories are stable under the action of the renormalization group. Within this framework the problem of wedge (Bisognano-Wichmann) duality in the scaling limit is discussed and some of its physical implications are outlined.
