Proposal of the KOTO II experiment

The KOTO II experiment is proposed to measure the branching ratio of the decay $K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$ at J-PARC. With a beamline to extract long-lived neutral kaons at 5 degrees from a production target, the single event sensitivity of the decay is $8.5\times 10^{-13}$, which is much smaller than the Standard Model prediction $3\times 10^{-11}$. This allows searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model and the first discovery of the decay with a significance exceeding $5\sigma$. As the only experiment proposed in the world dedicated to rare kaon decays, KOTO II will be indispensable in the quest for a complete understanding of flavor dynamics in the quark sector. Moreover, by combining efforts from the kaon community worldwide, we plan to develop the KOTO II detector further and expand the physics reach of the experiment to include measurements of the branching ratio of the $K_L\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, studies of other $K_L$ decays, and searches for dark photons, axions, and axion-like particles. KOTO II will therefore obtain a comprehensive understanding of $K_L$ decays, providing further constraints on new physics scenarios with existing $K^+$ results.

NaNu: Proposal for a Neutrino Experiment at the SPS Collider located at the North Area of CERN

Several experiments have been proposed in the recent years to study the nature of tau neutrinos, in particular aiming for a first observation of tau anti-neutrinos, more stringent upper limit on its anomalous magnetic moment as well as new constrains on the strange-quark content of the nucleon. We propose here a new low-cost neutrino experiment at the CERN North area, named NaNu (North Area NeUtrino), compatible with the realization of the future SHADOWS and HIKE experiments at the same experimental area.

A Design of Scintillator Tiles Read Out by Surface-Mounted SiPMs for a Future Hadron Calorimeter

Precision calorimetry using highly granular sampling calorimeters is being developed based on the particle flow concept within the CALICE collaboration. One design option of a hadron calorimeter is based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to detect photons generated in plastic scintillator tiles. Driven by the need of automated mass assembly of around ten million channels stringently required by the high granularity, we developed a design of scintillator tiles directly coupled with surface-mounted SiPMs. A cavity is created in the center of the bottom surface of each tile to provide enough room for the whole SiPM package and to improve collection of the light produced by incident particles penetrating the tile at different positions. The cavity design has been optimized using a GEANT4-based full simulation model to achieve a high response to a Minimum Ionizing Particles (MIP) and also good spatial uniformity. The single-MIP response for scintillator tiles with an optimized cavity design has been measured using cosmic rays, which shows that a SiPM with a sensitive area of only $\mathbf{1\times1~mm^2}$ (Hamamatsu MPPC S12571-025P) reaches a mean response of more than 23 photon equivalents with a dynamic range of many tens of MIPs. A recent uniformity measurement for the same tile design is performed by scanning the tile area using focused electrons from a $\mathbf{^{90}Sr}$ source, which shows that around 97% (80%) of the tile area is within 90% (95%) response uniformity. This optimized design is well beyond the requirements for a precision hadron calorimeter.

Radiative K+- Decays from NA48/2

New results on radiative K+- decays from the NA48/2 experiment are presented. In the channel K+- -> pi+- pi0 gamma more than 1 million decays were reconstructed, leading to the first measurement of the interference between direct photon emission and inner bremsstrahlung and stringent limits on CP violation in this decay. For K+- -> pi+- gamma gamma, a precise measurement of the branching fraction was performed, based on more than 1000 events. In addition, the related decay K+- -> pi+- e+ e- gamma was observed for the first time and measurements of the decay rate and the decay parameter c^ were carried out.

Precision Standard Model Tests with Kaons

In kaon physics, several new precision measurements on flavour variables and CP violation have performed in the recent years. Presented are a new precise determination of the CKM parameter |V_us|, which combines the results of all experiments together with recent theoretical progress, and new measurements of the ratio R_K = Gamma(K+ -> e+ nu)/Gamma(K+ -> mu+ nu), which is sensitive to contributions of a possible charged Higgs in the SUSY framework. Also, final results of a precision search for direct CP violation in charged kaon decays are presented.

Wigner-Cusp in Kaon Decays and Determination of pi pi Scattering Lengths

In the last few years it has become possible to study low energy pi pi scattering in kaon decays to three pions, thanks to the high statistics measurement of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays performed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. At the pi+ pi- threshold, the pi0 pi0 mass spectrum exhibits a Wigner-cusp, from which the S-wave pi pi scattering lengths are extracted with high precision. This measurement is complementary to the extraction of the scattering lengths from K_e4 decays, which is also performed by the NA48/2 experiment.

Lepton Universality Tests with Kaons

Precision data on Kl3 and Kl2 decay rates and form factors allow us to perform significant tests of lepton universality and to constrain the strength of non-standard interactions. The present status of these tests and new physics searches are discussed, as obtained by combining all the available results of the various kaon physics experiments.

New Results on Xi0 Hyperon Decays

In the recent years many new measurements of the decay of the neutral Xi0 hyperon have been reported both by the NA48/1 and the KTeV collaboration. The results are based on data samples of more than 2 billion Xi0 decays. In this report new measurements of the Xi0 lifetime, decay asymmetries, and semileptonic decay rates are presented. The latter allow the extraction of the CKM matrix element |V_us|, complementary to kaon decays.

New Results in Kaon Physics from NA48 and KTEV

In the recent year many new results from kaon decays have been reported from both the NA48 experiment at CERN and the KTeV experiment at Fermilab. Both experiments have new and improved measurements of the parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) of direct CP violation in the neutral kaon system. Also several new results on rare and very rare K_L decays were reported. In addition, the NA48 collaboration has performed special high-intensity K_S run periods, with the first results now being available.

New Results on Kaon Decays from NA48

New measurements of K_L and K_S decays from the NA48 experiment are presented. From data taken in the year 2001, the value of the K_e3 charge asymmetry has been determined to delta_L(e) = (3.317 +- 0.070(stat) +- 0.072 (syst)) x 10^-3. From a special high-intensity K_S run period performed in 2000, NA48 has found a limit of 1.4 x 10^-6 on the K_S -> 3 pi0 branching ratio and measured the parameter eta_000. The same data sample also leads to the first observation of the rare decay K_S -> pi0 gamma gamma. All results are still preliminary.

Tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory in Rare Kaon Decays

The neutral Kaon decays Ks->gamma gamma and Kl->pi0 gamma gamma are very sensitive to higher order loop effects of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). New measurements of the NA48 experiment show that ChPT contributions of O(p^6) cannot be neglected in these modes. In addition a new measurement of the related decay Kl->gamma gamma and an upper limit of the rate of Ks->pi0 gamma gamma are presented.
