Highly compact neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories of gravity: Spontaneous scalarization versus gravitational collapse

Scalar-tensor theories of gravity are extensions of General Relativity (GR) including an extra, nonminimally coupled scalar degree of freedom. A wide class of these theories, albeit indistinguishable from GR in the weak field regime, predicts a radically different phenomenology for neutron stars, due to a nonperturbative, strong-field effect referred to as spontaneous scalarization. This effect is known to occur in theories where the effective linear coupling $β_0$ between the scalar and matter fields is sufficiently negative, i.e. $β_0 \lesssim -4.35$, and has been strongly constrained by pulsar timing observations. In the test-field approximation, spontaneous scalarization manifests itself as a tachyonic-like instability. Recently, it was argued that, in theories where $β_0>0$, a similar instability would be triggered by sufficiently compact neutron stars obeying realistic equations of state. In this work we investigate the endstate of this instability for some representative coupling functions with $β_0>0$. This is done both through an energy balance analysis of the existing equilibrium configurations, and by numerically determining the nonlinear Cauchy development of unstable initial data. We find that, contrary to the $β_0<0$ case, the final state of the instability is highly sensitive to the details of the coupling function, varying from gravitational collapse to spontaneous scalarization. In particular, we show, for the first time, that spontaneous scalarization can happen in theories with $β_0>0$, which could give rise to novel astrophysical tests of the theory of gravity.

Instability of nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the spacetime of thin charged shells

We investigate the stability of a free scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity under linear perturbations in the spacetime of a charged spherical shell. Our analysis is performed in the context of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes. This paper completes previous analyses which considered the exponential enhancement of vacuum fluctuations in the spacetime of massive shells.

Self-force and fluid resonances

The gravitational self-force acting on a particle orbiting a massive central body has thus far been computed for vacuum spacetimes involving a black hole. In this work we continue an ongoing effort to study the self-force in nonvacuum situations. We replace the black hole by a material body consisting of a perfect fluid, and determine the impact of the fluid's dynamics on the self-force and resulting orbital evolution. We show that as the particle inspirals toward the fluid body, its gravitational perturbations trigger a number of quasinormal modes of the fluid-gravity system, which produce resonant features in the conservative and dissipative components of the self-force. As a proof-of-principle, we demonstrate this phenomenon in a simplified framework in which gravity is mediated by a scalar potential satisfying a wave equation in Minkowski spacetime.

On the possibility of setting a new constraint to scalar-tensor theories

Scalar-tensor theories (STTs) are a widely studied alternative to General Relativity (GR) in which gravity is endowed with an additional scalar degree of freedom. Although severely constrained by solar system and pulsar timing experiments, there remains a large set of STTs which are consistent with all present day observations. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of probing a yet unconstrained region of the parameter space of STTs based on the fact that stability properties of highly compact neutron stars in these theories may radically differ from those in GR.

Instability of nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the spacetime of slowly rotating compact objects

Nonminimally coupled free scalar fields may be unstable in the spacetime of compact objects. Such instability can be triggered by classical seeds or, more simply, by quantum fluctuations giving rise to the so-called {\em vacuum awakening effect}. Here, we investigate how the parameter space which characterizes the instability is affected when the object gains some rotation. For this purpose, we focus on the stability analysis of nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the spacetime of slowly spinning matter shells.

Quantum versus classical instability of scalar fields in curved backgrounds

General-relativistic stable spacetimes can be made unstable under the presence of certain nonminimally coupled free scalar fields. In this paper, we analyze the evolution of linear scalar-field perturbations in spherically symmetric spacetimes and compare the classical stability analysis with a recently discussed quantum field one. In particular, it is shown that vacuum fluctuations lead to natural seeds for the unstable phase, whereas in the classical framework the presence of such seeds in the initial conditions must be assumed.

Reply to "Comment on `Quantum versus classical instability of scalar fields in curved backgrounds'"

We show that the reasoning which led the author of arXiv:1310.6252 to reach his conclusions relies on an incorrect criterion for the existence of normalizable bound solutions. We reinforce that the general result derived in the Appendix of our paper (arXiv:1310.2185), namely, that "there are no tachyonic (i.e., unstable) modes for minimally coupled scalar fields in asymptotically flat spherically symmetric static spacetimes containing no horizons" is indeed correct.

Awaking the vacuum with spheroidal shells

It has been shown that well-behaved spacetimes may induce the vacuum fluctuations of some nonminimally coupled free scalar fields to go through a phase of exponential growth. Here, we discuss this mechanism in the context of spheroidal thin shells emphasizing the consequences of deviations from spherical symmetry.

Radiation interference from sources rotating around Schwarzschild black holes

We investigate the influence of the spacetime curvature on the interference of the radiation emitted by an ensemble of scalar sources in circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole. We pay particular attention to the transition from the radiating to the non-radiating regime as the number of sources increases.
