All-order structure of static gravitational interactions and the seventh post-Newtonian potential

We present a closed formula for the computation of static post-Newtonian corrections to the two-body gravitational dynamics at any odd order, assuming the lower-order results are known. The formula is derived within a correlation function framework and exploits the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the static sector, leading to a novel theoretical interpretation of the factorization theorem. As an application, we compute the gravitational interaction of two compact coalescing objects at the seventh post-Newtonian order in the static limit, which receives contributions from seven-loop graphs at order $\mathcal{O}(G_N^8 v^0)$, and find complete agreement with the results obtained using the diagrammatic approach of the factorization theorem.

Six-loop gravitational interactions at the sixth post-Newtonian order

We compute the gravitational interaction of two coalescing compact objects at sixth post-Newtonian order in the static limit, employing the diagrammatic approach within the effective field theory framework of General Relativity. The calculation requires the evaluation of six-loop Feynman diagrams that are mapped onto two-point integrals with a gauge-theory-like structure, which are computed here for the first time. The resulting seventh-order contribution in Newton's constant is finite in three space dimensions. This result provides the most technically demanding missing ingredient for the determination of the conservative dynamics of the gravitational two-body system at sixth post-Newtonian order.

Magnusian: Relating the Eikonal Phase, the On-Shell Action, and the Scattering Generator

Two fundamentally distinct types of quantities are both called "eikonal" in present amplitudes literature. The unitarity of the S-matrix ensures it can be written as the exponential of a Hermitian operator. The eikonal generator or Magnusian, which is the classical limit of the expectation value of that operator, generates all scattering observables. The leading order classical behavior of the phase of an S-matrix element is called the classical eikonal phase, and it coincides with a classical on-shell action. We demonstrate that the eikonal generator (Magnusian) and the eikonal phase (classical on-shell action) are inequivalent and find the exact general relationship between them. That relationship explains the special case of integrable scattering in which the two do coincide up to a Legendre transformation and explains why such a correspondence fails in general when spin or radiation are included.

Radiating Love: adiabatic tidal fluxes and modes up to next-to-next-to-leading post-Newtonian order

We present the analytic evaluation of the gravitational energy and of the angular momentum flux with tidal effects for inspiraling compact binaries, at next-to-next-to-leading post-Newtoian (2PN) order, within the effective field theory diagrammatic approach. We first compute the stress-energy tensor for a binary system, that requires the evaluation of two-point Feynman integrals, up to two loops. Then, we extract the multipole moments of the system, which we present for generic orbits in center-of-mass coordinates, and which are needed for the evaluation of the total gravitational energy and the angular momentum flux, for generic orbits. Finally, we provide the expression of gauge invariant quantities such as the fluxes, and the mode amplitudes and phase of the emitted gravitational wave, for circular orbits. Our findings are useful to update earlier theoretical studies as well as related phenomenological analyses, and waveform models

Post-Minkowskian Theory Meets the Spinning Effective-One-Body Approach for Bound-Orbit Waveforms

Driven by advances in scattering amplitudes and worldline-based methods, recent years have seen significant progress in our ability to calculate gravitational two-body scattering observables. These observables effectively encapsulate the gravitational two-body problem in the weak-field and high-velocity regime (post-Minkowskian, PM), with applications to the bound two-body problem and gravitational-wave modeling. We leverage PM data to construct a complete inspiral-merger-ringdown waveform model for non-precessing spinning black holes within the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism: SEOBNR-PM. This model is closely based on the highly successful SEOBNRv5 model, used by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration, with its key new feature being an EOB Hamiltonian derived by matching the two-body scattering angle in a perturbative PM expansion. The model performs remarkably well, showing a median mismatch against 441 numerical-relativity (NR) simulations that is somewhat lower than a similarly calibrated version of SEOBNRv5. Comparisons of the binding energy with NR also demonstrate better agreement than SEOBNRv5, despite the latter containing additional calibration to NR simulations.

Renormalizing Love: tidal effects at the third post-Newtonian order

We present the conservative effective two-body Hamiltonian at the third order in the post-Newtonian expansion with gravitoelectric quadrupolar dynamical tidal-interactions. Our derivation of the effective two-body Lagrangian is based on the diagrammatic effective field theory approach and it involves Feynman integrals up to three loops, which are evaluated within the dimensional regularization scheme. The elimination of the divergent terms occurring in the effective Lagrangian requires the addition of counterterms to ensure finite observables, thereby introducing a renormalization group flow to the post-adiabatic Love number. As a limiting case of the renormalized dynamical effective Hamiltonian, we also derive the effective Hamiltonian for adiabatic tides, and, in this regime, calculate the binding energy for a circular orbit, and the scattering angle in a hyperbolic scattering.

Gravitoelectric dynamical tides at second post-Newtonian order

We present a gravitoelectric quadrupolar dynamical tidal-interaction Hamiltonian for a compact binary system, that is valid to second order in the post-Newtonian expansion. Our derivation uses the diagrammatic effective field theory approach, and involves Feynman integrals up to two loops, evaluated with the dimensional regularization scheme. We also derive the effective Hamiltonian for adiabatic tides, obtained by taking the appropriate limit of the dynamical effective Hamiltonian, and we check its validity by verifying the complete Poincar\'e algebra. In the adiabatic limit, we also calculate two gauge-invariant observables, namely, the binding energy for a circular orbit and the scattering angle in a hyperbolic scattering. Our results are important for developing accurate gravitational waveform models for neutron-star binaries for present and future gravitational-wave observatories.

Gravitational Quadratic-in-Spin Hamiltonian at NNNLO in the post-Newtonian framework

We present the result of the quadratic-in-spin interaction Hamiltonian for binary systems of rotating compact objects with generic spins, up to NNNLO corrections within the post-Newtonian expansion. The calculation is performed by employing the effective field theory diagrammatic approach, and it involves Feynman integrals up to three loops, evaluated within the dimensional regularization scheme. The gauge-invariant binding energy and the scattering angle, in special kinematic regimes and spin configurations, are explicitly derived. The results extend our earlier study on the spin-orbit interaction effects.

Gravitational Spin-Orbit Hamiltonian at NNNLO in the post-Newtonian framework

We present the result of the spin-orbit interaction Hamiltonian for binary systems of rotating compact objects with generic spins, up to NNNLO corrections within the post-Newtonian expansion. The calculation is performed by employing the effective field theory diagrammatic approach, and it involves Feynman integrals up to three loops, evaluated within the dimensional regularization scheme. We apply canonical transformations to eliminate the non-physical divergences and spurious logarithmic behaviours of the Hamiltonian, and use the latter to derive the gauge-invariant binding energy and the scattering angle, in special kinematic regimes.

Spinning amplitudes from scalar amplitudes

We provide a systematic method to compute tree-level scattering amplitudes with spinning external states from amplitudes with scalar external states in arbitrary spacetime dimensions. We write down analytic answers for various scattering amplitudes, including the four graviton amplitude due to the massive spin $J$ exchange. We verify the results by computing angular distributions in 3 + 1 dimensions using various identities involving Jacobi polynomials.

EFT approach to general relativity: correction to EIH Lagrangian due to electromagnetic charge

We extend the Non-Relativistic formulation of General Relativity (NRGR) given in Goldberger et al. (Phys Rev D 73:104029, 2006) to incorporate the effects of electromagnetic charge of the constituents of the binary. We incorporate the photon field in NRGR by giving the field decomposition and power counting rules. Using these, we develop the Feynman rules to describe photon and graviton interactions with point particle worldline. We then find the corrections to the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann Lagrangian (Einstein et al. in Ann Math 39:65-100, 1938) due to the presence of the photon field and electromagnetic charge of the constituents of the binary.

Path integrals, spontaneous localisation, and the classical limit

We recall that in order to obtain the classical limit of quantum mechanics one needs to take the $\hbar\rightarrow 0$ limit. In addition, one also needs an explanation for the absence of macroscopic quantum superposition of position states. One possible explanation for the latter is the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) model of spontaneous localisation. Here we describe how spontaneous localisation modifies the path integral formulation of density matrix evolution in quantum mechanics. (Such a formulation has been derived earlier by Pearle and Soucek; we provide two new derivations of their result). We then show how the von Neumann equation and the Liouville equation for the density matrix arise in the quantum and classical limit, respectively, from the GRW path integral. Thus we provide a rigorous demonstration of the quantum to classical transition.

Plasmonic quasicrystals for designable ultra broadband transmission enhancement and second harmonic generation

Quasi-crystals are intriguing as they exhibit rotational symmetry and long range ordering but lack translational symmetry. 2-dimensional metal-dielectric patterns are interesting to make use of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mediated local field enhancement and for near dispersionless SPP modes. In plasmonic crystals, the orientation and periodicity of the pattern dictate the polarization response and the discrete plasmon resonances while the interfaces define the plasmon dispersion. However, unique properties of plasmonic quasicrystals lead to polarization independence, designable k-space and broadband transmission enhancement due to SPP mediation. These are useful in many applications like energy harvesting, nonlinear optics and quantum plasmonics. We demonstrate design and fabrication of large area quasicrystal air hole patterns of pi/5 symmetry in metal film in which broadband, launch angle and polarization independent transmission enhancement as well as broadband second harmonic generation are observed. Designable transmission response, other symmetries and tilings are possible.
