Graded geometry and generalized reduction

We present general reduction procedures for Courant, Dirac and generalized complex structures, in particular when a group of symmetries is acting. We do so by taking the graded symplectic viewpoint on Courant algebroids and carrying out graded symplectic reduction, both in the coisotropic and hamiltonian settings. Specializing the latter to the exact case, we recover in a systematic way the reduction schemes of Bursztyn-Cavalcanti-Gualtieri.

Coherent span-valued 2D TQFTs

We consider commutative Frobenius pseudomonoids in the bicategory of spans, and we show that they are in correspondence with 2-Segal cosymmetric sets. Such a structure can be interpreted as a coherent 2-dimensional topological quantum field theory taking values in the bicategory of spans. We also describe a construction that produces a 2-Segal cosymmetric set from any partial monoid equipped with a distinguished element.

Graded Contact Geometry and the AKSZ Formalism

The AKSZ formalism is a construction of topological field theories where the target spaces are differential graded symplectic manifolds. In this paper, we describe an analogue of the AKSZ formalism where the target spaces are differential graded contact manifolds. We show that the space of fields inherits a weak contact structure, and we construct a solution to the analogue of the classical master equation, defined via the Jacobi bracket. In the $n=1$ case, we recover the Jacobi sigma model, and in the $n=2$ case, we obtain three-dimensional topological field theories associated to Courant-Jacobi algebroids.

2-Segal sets and pseudomonoids in the bicategory of spans

In this survey article, we give an introduction to the notion of a 2-Segal set and prove that 2-Segal sets are equivalent to pseudomonoids in the bicategory of spans. The proof utilizes graphical techniques for 2-Segal sets and spans that should be useful in more general settings. There are procedures for obtaining an associative algebra from a 2-Segal set (satisfying finiteness conditions). We describe these procedures and give several examples of algebras arising from 2-Segal sets. Wherever possible, we avoid higher category theory so as to make the paper accessible to a wide audience.

Frobenius and commutative pseudomonoids in the bicategory of spans

In previous work by the first two authors, Frobenius and commutative algebra objects in the category of spans of sets were characterized in terms of simplicial sets satisfying certain properties. In this paper, we find a similar characterization for the analogous coherent structures in the bicategory of spans of sets. We show that commutative and Frobenius pseudomonoids in $\operatorname{Span}$ correspond, respectively, to paracyclic sets and $Γ$-sets satisfying the $2$-Segal conditions. These results connect closely with work of the third author on $A_\infty$ algebras in $\infty$-categories of spans, as well as the growing body of work on higher Segal objects. Because our motivation comes from symplectic geometry and topological field theory, we emphasize the direct and computational nature of the classifications and their proofs.

Frobenius objects in the category of relations

We give a characterization, in terms of simplicial sets, of Frobenius objects in the category of relations. This result generalizes a result of Heunen, Contreras, and Cattaneo showing that special dagger Frobenius objects in the category of relations are in correspondence with groupoids. As an additional example, we construct a Frobenius object in the category of relations whose elements are certain cohomology classes in a compact oriented Riemannian manifold.

On Examples and Classification of Frobenius Objects in Rel

We give some new examples of Frobenius objects in the category of sets and relations $\textbf{Rel}$. One example is a groupoid with a twisted counit. Another example is the set of conjugacy classes of a group. We also classify Frobenius objects in $\textbf{Rel}$ with two or three elements, and we compute the associated surface invariants using the partition functions of the corresponding TQFTs.

Frobenius objects in the category of spans

We consider Frobenius objects in the category Span, where the objects are sets and the morphisms are isomorphism classes of spans of sets. We show that such structures are in correspondence with data that can be characterized in terms of simplicial sets. An interesting class of examples comes from groupoids. Our primary motivation is that Span can be viewed as a set-theoretic model for the symplectic category, and thus Frobenius objects in Span provide set-theoretic models for classical topological field theories. The paper includes an explanation of this relationship.

Courant cohomology, Cartan calculus, connections, curvature, characteristic classes

We give an explicit description, in terms of bracket, anchor, and pairing, of the standard cochain complex associated to a Courant algebroid. In this formulation, the differential satisfies a formula that is formally identical to the Cartan formula for the de Rham differential. This perspective allows us to develop the theory of Courant algebroid connections in a way that mirrors the classical theory of connections. Using a special class of connections, we construct secondary characteristic classes associated to any Courant algebroid.

Modules and representations up to homotopy of Lie $n$-algebroids

This paper studies differential graded modules and representations up to homotopy of Lie $n$-algebroids, for general $n\in\mathbb{N}$. The adjoint and coadjoint modules are described, and the corresponding split versions of the adjoint and coadjoint representations up to homotopy are explained. In particular, the case of Lie 2-algebroids is analysed in detail. The compatibility of a Poisson bracket with the homological vector field of a Lie $n$-algebroid is shown to be equivalent to a morphism from the coadjoint module to the adjoint module, leading to an alternative characterisation of non-degeneracy of higher Poisson structures. Moreover, the Weil algebra of a Lie $n$-algebroid is computed explicitly in terms of splittings, and representations up to homotopy of Lie $n$-algebroids are used to encode decomposed VB-Lie $n$-algebroid structures on double vector bundles.

Constant Symplectic 2-groupoids

We propose a definition of symplectic 2-groupoid which includes integrations of Courant algebroids that have been recently constructed. We study in detail the simple but illustrative case of constant symplectic 2-groupoids. We show that the constant symplectic 2-groupoids are, up to equivalence, in one-to-one correspondence with a simple class of Courant algebroids that we call constant Courant algebroids. Furthermore, we find a correspondence between certain Dirac structures and Lagrangian sub-2-groupoids.

VB-groupoids and representation theory of Lie groupoids

A VB-groupoid is a Lie groupoid equipped with a compatible linear structure. In this paper, we describe a correspondence, up to isomorphism, between VB-groupoids and 2-term representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids. Under this correspondence, the tangent bundle of a Lie groupoid G corresponds to the "adjoint representation" of G. The value of this point of view is that the tangent bundle is canonical, whereas the adjoint representation is not. We define a cochain complex that is canonically associated to any VB-groupoid. The cohomology of this complex is isomorphic to the groupoid cohomology with values in the corresponding representations up to homotopy. When applied to the tangent bundle of a Lie groupoid, this construction produces a canonical complex that computes the cohomology with values in the adjoint representation. Finally, we give a classification of regular 2-term representations up to homotopy. By considering the adjoint representation, we find a new cohomological invariant associated to regular Lie groupoids.

Modular Classes of Lie Groupoid Representations up to Homotopy

We describe a construction of the modular class associated to a representation up to homotopy of a Lie groupoid. In the case of the adjoint representation up to homotopy, this class is the obstruction to the existence of a volume form, in the sense of Weinstein's "The volume of a differentiable stack".

From double Lie groupoids to local Lie 2-groupoids

We apply the bar construction to the nerve of a double Lie groupoid to obtain a local Lie 2-groupoid. As an application, we recover Haefliger's fundamental groupoid from the fundamental double groupoid of a Lie groupoid. In the case of a symplectic double groupoid, we study the induced closed 2-form on the associated local Lie 2-groupoid, which leads us to propose a definition of a symplectic 2-groupoid.

The Atiyah class of a dg-vector bundle

We introduce the notions of Atiyah class and Todd class of a differential graded vector bundle with respect to a differential graded Lie algebroid. We prove that the space of vector fields on a dg-manifold with homological vector field $Q$ admits a structure of L-infinity algebra with the Lie derivative $L_Q$ as unary bracket, and the Atiyah cocycle corresponding to a torsion-free affine connection as binary bracket.

Lie algebroid modules and representations up to homotopy

We establish a relationship between two different generalizations of Lie algebroid representations: representation up to homotopy and Vaintrob's Lie algebroid modules. Specifically, we show that there is a noncanonical way to obtain a representation up to homotopy from a given Lie algebroid module, and that any two representations up to homotopy obtained in this way are equivalent in a natural sense. We therefore obtain a one-to-one correspondence, up to equivalence.

Symplectic structures on the integration of exact Courant algebroids

We construct an infinite-dimensional symplectic 2-groupoid as the integration of an exact Courant algebroid. We show that every integrable Dirac structure integrates to a "Lagrangian" sub-2-groupoid of this symplectic 2-groupoid. As a corollary, we recover a result of Bursztyn-Crainic-Weinstein-Zhu that every integrable Dirac structure integrates to a presymplectic groupoid.
