Canonical forms of two-qubit states under local operations

Canonical forms of two-qubits under the action of stochastic local operations and classical communications (SLOCC) offer great insight for understanding non-locality and entanglement shared by them. They also enable geometric picture of two-qubit states within the Bloch ball. It has been shown (Verstraete et.al. {Phys. Rev. A, 64, 010101(R) (2001)) that an arbitrary two-qubit state gets transformed under SLOCC into one of the {\em two} different canonical forms. One of these happens to be the Bell diagonal form of two-qubit states and the other non-diagonal canonical form is obtained for a family of rank deficient two-qubit states. The method employed by Verstraete et.al. required highly non-trivial results on matrix decompositions in $n$ dimensional spaces with indefinite metric. Here we employ an entirely different approach -- inspired by the methods developed by Rao et. al., (J. Mod. Opt. 45, 955 (1998)) in classical polarization optics -- which leads naturally towards the identification of two inequivalent SLOCC invariant canonical forms for two-qubit states. In addition, our approach results in a simple geometric visualization of two-qubit states in terms of their SLOCC canonical forms.

Path Integral for Spin-1 Chain in the Fluctuating Matrix Product State Basis

A new method of writing down the path integral for spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is introduced. In place of the conventional coherent state basis that leads to the non-linear sigma-model, we use a new basis called the fluctuating matrix product states (fMPS) which embodies inter-site entanglement from the outset. It forms an overcomplete set spanning the entire Hilbert space of the spin-1 chain. Saddle-point analysis performed for the bilinear-biquadratic spin model predicts Affeck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) state as the ground state in the vicinity of the AKLT Hamiltonian. Quadratic effective action derived by gradient expansion around the saddle point is free from constraints that plagued the non-linear sigma model and exactly solvable. The obtained excitation modes agree precisely with the single-mode approximation result for the AKLT Hamiltonian. Excitation spectra for other BLBQ Hamiltonians are obtained as well by diagonalizing the quadratic action.

Probing the randomness of ergodic states: extreme-value statistics in the ergodic and many-body-localized phases

The extreme-value statistics of the entanglement spectrum in disordered spin chains possessing a many-body localization transition is examined. It is expected that eigenstates in the metallic or ergodic phase, behave as random states and hence the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix, commonly referred to as the entanglement spectrum, are expected to follow the eigenvalue statistics of a trace normalized Wishart ensemble. In particular, the density of eigenvalues is supposed to follow the universal Marchenko-Pastur distribution. We find deviations in the tails both for the disordered XXZ with total $S_z$ conserved in the half-filled sector as well as in a model that breaks this conservation. A sensitive measure of deviations is provided by the largest eigenvalue, which in the case of the Wishart ensemble after appropriate shift and scaling follows the universal Tracy-Widom distribution. We show that for the models considered, in the metallic phase, the largest eigenvalue of the reduced density matrix of eigenvector, instead follows the generalized extreme-value statistics bordering on the Fisher-Tipett-Gumbel distribution indicating that the correlations between eigenvalues are much weaker compared to the Wishart ensemble. We show by means of distributions conditional on the high entropy and normalized participation ratio of eigenstates that the conditional entanglement spectrum still follows generalized extreme value distribution. In the deeply localized phase we find heavy tailed distributions and Lévy stable laws in an appropriately scaled function of the largest and second largest eigenvalues. The scaling is motivated by a recently developed perturbation theory of weakly coupled chaotic systems.

Low-energy dynamics of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model in the one- and two-triplon basis

The elementary excitation in the antiferromagnetic spin-1 model known as the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) Hamiltonian has been described alternatively as magnons or kink-like solitons (triplons). The latter, which we call the triplon throughout this paper, has been proven equivalent descriptions of the same magnon excitation and not an independent branch of excited states. On the other hand, no careful examination of multi-magnon and multi-triplon equivalence was made in the past. In this paper we prove that two-magnon and two-triplon states are also identical descriptions of the same excited states, and furthermore that their energies break down as the sum of one-triplon energies exactly for the AKLT Hamiltonian. The statement holds despite the fact that the model is non-integrable. Such magnon/triplon dichotomy is conjectured to hold for arbitrary n-magnon and n-triplon states. The one- and two-triplon states form orthogonal sets that can be used to span the low-energy Hilbert space. We construct an effective version of the AKLT Hamiltonian within such subspace, and work out the correction to the one-triplon energy gap that finds excellent agreement with the known exact value.

Entanglement sharing through noisy qubit channels: One-shot optimal singlet fraction

Maximally entangled states--a resource for quantum information processing--can only be shared through noiseless quantum channels, whereas in practice channels are noisy. Here we ask: Given a noisy quantum channel, what is the maximum attainable purity (measured by singlet fraction) of shared entanglement for single channel use and local trace preserving operations? We find an exact formula of the maximum singlet fraction attainable for a qubit channel and give an explicit protocol to achieve the optimal value. The protocol distinguishes between unital and nonunital channels and requires no local post-processing. In particular, the optimal singlet fraction is achieved by transmitting part of an appropriate pure entangled state, which is maximally entangled if and only if the channel is unital. A linear function of the optimal singlet fraction is also shown to be an upper bound on the distillable entanglement of the mixed state dual to the channel.

Entangling power of time-evolution operators in integrable and nonintegrable many-body systems

The entangling power and operator entanglement entropy are state independent measures of entanglement. Their growth and saturation is examined in the time-evolution operator of quantum many-body systems that can range from the integrable to the fully chaotic. An analytically solvable integrable model of the kicked transverse field Ising chain is shown to have ballistic growth of operator von Neumann entanglement entropy and exponentially fast saturation of the linear entropy with time. Surprisingly a fully chaotic model with longitudinal fields turned on shares the same growth phase, and is consistent with a random matrix model that is also exactly solvable for the linear entropy entanglements. However an examination of the entangling power shows that its largest value is significantly less than the nearly maximal value attained by the nonintegrable one. The importance of long-range spectral correlations, and not just the nearest neighbor spacing, is pointed out in determing the growth of entanglement in nonintegrable systems. Finally an interesting case that displays some features peculiar to both integrable and nonintegrable systems is briefly discussed.

Entanglement sharing via qudit channels: Nonmaximally entangled states may be necessary for one-shot optimal singlet fraction and negativity

We consider the problem of establishing entangled states of optimal singlet fraction and negativity between two remote parties for every use of a noisy quantum channel and trace-preserving LOCC under the assumption that the parties do not share prior correlations. We show that for a family of quantum channels in every finite dimension $d\geq3$, one-shot optimal singlet fraction and entanglement negativity are attained only with appropriate nonmaximally entangled states. We further show that the generalization of the formula that exactly computes one-shot optimal singlet fraction for qubit channels does not hold in general in higher dimensions. A consequence of our results is that the ordering of entangled states in all finite dimensions may not be preserved under trace-preserving LOCC.

Non-locality breaking qubit channels

Entanglement breaking channels play a significant role in quantum information theory. In this work we investigate qubit channels through their property of `non-locality breaking', defined in a natural way but within the purview of CHSH nonlocality. This also provides a different perspective on the relationship between entanglement and nonlocality through the dual picture of quantum channels instead of through states. For a channel to be entanglement breaking it is sufficient to `break' the entanglement of maximally entangled states. We provide examples to show that for CHSH nonlocality breaking such a property does not hold in general, though for certain channels and for a restricted class of states for all channels this holds. We also consider channels whose output remains local under SLOCC and call them `strongly non-locality breaking'. We provide a closed form necessary-sufficient condition for any two-qubit state to show hidden CHSH nonlocality, which is likely to be useful for other purposes as well. This in turn allows us to characterize all strongly non-locality breaking qubit channels. It turns out that unital qubit channels breaking nonlocality of maximally entangled states are strongly non-locality breaking while extremal qubit channels cannot be so unless they are entanglement breaking.

Approximate joint measurement of qubit observables through an Arthur-Kelly type model

We consider joint measurement of two and three unsharp qubit observables through an Arthur-Kelly type joint measurement model for qubits. We investigate the effect of initial state of the detectors on the unsharpness of the measurement as well as the post-measurement state of the system. Particular emphasis is given on a physical understanding of the POVM to PVM transition in the model and entanglement between system and detectors. Two approaches for characterizing the unsharpness of the measurement and the resulting measurement uncertainty relations are considered. The corresponding measures of unsharpness are connected for the case where both the measurements are equally unsharp. The connection between the POVM elements and symmetries of the underlying Hamiltonian of the measurement interaction is made explicit and used to perform joint measurement in arbitrary directions. Finally in the case of three observables we derive a necessary condition for the approximate joint measurement and use it show the relative freedom available when the observables are non-orthogonal.
