Study of Beta Equilibrated 2+1 Flavor Quark Matter in PNJL Model

We report a first case study of the phase diagram of 2+1 flavor strongly interacting matter in $β-$equilibrium, using the Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. Physical characteristics of relevant thermodynamic observables have been discussed. A comparative analysis with the corresponding observables in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is presented. We find distinct differences between the models in terms of a number of thermodynamic quantities like the speed of sound, specific heat, various number densities as well as entropy. The present study is expected to give us a better insight into the role that the superdense matter created in heavy ion collision experiments play in our understanding of the properties of matter inside the core of supermassive stars in the Universe.

Entropy scaling and thermalization in hadron-hadron collisions at LHC

The recent LHC data have once more brought the issue of the formation of thermalized state of matter in hadron-hadron collisions into the forefront. In this letter, we have shown that the scaling of the information entropy of the chaotically produced particles is valid up to recently available data from p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.36 TeV obtained by ALICE experiment. We predict that at the highest energies projected for LHC, almost all the particles will be produced chaotically, indicating that a collective behavior should be observed in hadronic collisions, as indicated by one of present authors quite some time ago.

Heavy lepton pair production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energy - a case study

We present a study of $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ lepton pair production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.5 TeV. The larger $τ^{\pm}$ mass ($\sim$ 1.77 GeV) compared to $e^{\pm}$ and $μ^{\pm}$ leads to considerably small hadronic contribution to the $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ pair invariant mass ($M$) distribution relative to the production from thermal partonic sources. The quark-anti-quark annihilation processes via intermediary virtual photon, Z and Higgs bosons have been considered for the production of $ τ^{+}τ^{-}$. We observe that the contribution from Drell-Yan process dominates over thermal yield for $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ pair mass from 4 to 20 GeV at the LHC energy. We also present the ratio of $τ$ lepton pair yields for nucleus-nucleus collisions relative to yields from p+p collisions scaled by number of binary collisions at LHC energies as a function $τ$ pair mass. The ratio is found to be significantly above unity for the mass range 4 to 6 GeV. This indicates the possibility of detecting $τ^{+}τ^{-}$ pair from quark gluon plasma (QGP) in the mass window $4\leq M$(GeV)$\leq 6$.

QCD phase diagram using PNJL model with eight-quark interactions

We present the phase diagram and the fluctuations of different conserved charges like quark number, charge and strangeness at vanishing chemical potential for the 2+1 flavor Polyakov Loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with eight-quark interaction terms using three-momentum cutoff regularisation. The main effect of the higher order interaction term is to shift the critical end point to the lower value of the chemical potential and higher value of the temperature. The fluctuations show good qualitative agreement with the lattice data.

Correlation between conserved charges in PNJL Model with multi-quark interactions

We present a study of correlations among conserved charges like baryon number, electric charge and strangeness in the framework of 2+1 flavor Polyakov loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at vanishing chemical potentials, up to fourth order. Correlations up to second order have been measured in Lattice QCD which compares well with our estimates given the inherent difference in the pion masses in the two systems. Possible physical implications of these correlations and their importance in understanding the matter obtained in heavy-ion collisions are discussed. We also present comparison of the results with the commonly used unbound effective potential in the quark sector of this model.

Susceptibilities with multi-quark interactions in PNJL model

We have investigated the fluctuations and the higher order susceptibilities of quark number, isospin number, electric charge and strangeness at vanishing chemical potential for 2+1 flavor Polyakov loop extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The calculations are performed for the bound effective potential in the quark sector requiring up to eight quark interaction terms. These have been contrasted to the lattice results which currently have somewhat heavier quarks in the light flavor sector. The results show sufficient qualitative agreement. For comparison we also present the results obtained with the conventional effective potential containing upto six quark interaction terms.

Investigation of Phase Diagram and Bulk Thermodynamic Properties using PNJL Model with Eight-Quark Interactions

We present the bulk thermodynamic properties and phase diagram of strongly interacting matter in an extension of the 3-flavor NJL and PNJL models of QCD. Using a three momentum cut-off scheme, we have extended the multiquark interaction terms up to eight order so that the stability of the vacuum is ensured in these models. We explore the effects of various combinations of the two eight-quark couplings $g_1$ and $g_2$ and present a comparative study between the NJL and PNJL models as well as Lattice QCD data. The main effect of the eight-quark interaction term is to shift the critical end point in the $T-μ$ phase diagram to a lower value of $μ$ and higher value of $T$, thus bringing them closer to Lattice QCD results.

QGP Susceptibilities from PNJL Model

An improved version of the PNJL model is used to calculate various thermodynamical quantities, {\it viz.}, quark number susceptibility, isospin susceptibility, specific heat, speed of sound and conformal measure. Comparison with Lattice data is found to be encouraging.

PNJL model with a Van der Monde term

We extend the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model for two degenerate flavours by including the effect of the SU(3) measure with a Van der Monde (VdM) term. This ensures that the Polyakov loop always remains in the domain [0,1]. The pressure, energy density, specific heat, speed of sound and conformal measure show small or negligible effects from this term. However various quark number and isospin susceptibilities are all found to approach their respective ideal gas limits around 2 $T_c$. We compare our methods with other similar approaches in PNJL model and also present a quantitative comparison with Lattice QCD data.

Wakes in a Collisional Quark-Gluon Plasma

Wakes created by a parton moving through a static and infinitely extended quark-gluon plasma are considered. In contrast to former investigations collisions within the quark-gluon plasma are taken into account using a transport theoretical approach (Boltzmann equation) with a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision term. Within this model it is shown that the wake structure changes significantly compared to the collisionless case.

Thermodynamics of the PNJL model with nonzero baryon and isospin chemical potentials

We have extended the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model for two degenerate flavours to include the isospin chemical potential ($μ_I$). All the diagonal and mixed derivatives of pressure with respect to the quark number (proportional to baryon number) chemical potential ($μ_0$) and isospin chemical potential upto sixth order have been extracted at $μ_0 = μ_I = 0$. These derivatives give the generalized susceptibilities with respect to quark and isospin numbers. Similar estimates for the flavour diagonal and off-diagonal susceptibilities are also presented. Comparison to Lattice QCD (LQCD) data of some of these susceptibilities for which LQCD data are available, show similar temperature dependence, though there are some quantitative deviations above the crossover temperature. We have also looked at the effects of instanton induced flavour-mixing coming from the $U_A(1)$ chiral symmetry breaking 't Hooft determinant like term in the NJL part of the model. The diagonal quark number and isospin susceptibilities are completely unaffected. The off-diagonal susceptibilities show significant dependence near the crossover. Finally we present the chemical potential dependence of specific heat and speed of sound within the limits of chemical potentials where neither diquarks nor pions can condense.

Susceptibilities and speed of sound from PNJL model

We present the Taylor expansion coefficients of the pressure in quark number chemical potential $μ_0=μ_B / 3=μ_u=μ_d$, for the strongly interacting matter as described by the PNJL model for two light degenerate flavours of quarks u and d. The expansion has been done upto eighth order in $μ_0$, and the results are consistent with recent estimates from Lattice. We have further obtained the specific heat $C_V$, squared speed of sound $v_s^2$ and the conformal measure $\cC$.

Stochastic Resonance in Underdamped, Bistable Systems

We carry out a detailed numerical investigation of stochastic resonance in underdamped systems in the non-perturbative regime. We point out that an important distinction between stochastic resonance in overdamped and underdamped systems lies in the lack of dependence of the amplitude of the noise-averaged trajectory on the noise strength, in the latter case. We provide qualitative explanations for the observed behavior and show that signatures such as the initial decay and long-time oscillatory behaviour of the temporal correlation function and peaks in the noise and phase averaged power spectral density, clearly indicate the manifestation of resonant behaviour in noisy, underdamped bistable systems in the weak to moderate noise regime.

Sustaining supercooled mixed phase via resonant oscillations of the order parameter

We investigate the dynamics of a first order transition when the order parameter field undergoes resonant oscillations, driven by a periodically varying parameter of the free energy. This parameter could be a background oscillating field as in models of pre-heating after inflation. In the context of condensed matter systems, it could be temperature $T$, or pressure, external electric/magnetic field etc. We show that with suitable driving frequency and amplitude, the system remains in a type of mixed phase, without ever completing transition to the stable phase, even when the oscillating parameter of the free energy remains below the corresponding critical value (for example, with oscillating temperature, $T$ always remains below the critical temperature $T_c$). This phenomenon may have important implications. In cosmology, it will imply prolonged mixed phase in a first order transition due to coupling with background oscillating fields. In condensed matter systems, it will imply that using oscillating temperature (or, more appropriately, pressure waves) one may be able to sustain liquids in a mixed phase indefinitely at low temperatures, without making transition to the frozen phase.

Formation and Collapse of False Vacuum Bubbles in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

It is possible that under certain situations, in a relativistic heavy-ion collision, partons may expand out forming a shell like structure. We analyze the process of hadronization in such a picture for the case when the quark-hadron transition is of first order, and argue that the inside region of such a shell must correspond to a supercooled (to $T = 0$) deconfined vacuum. Hadrons from that region escape out, leaving a bubble of pure deconfined vacuum with large vacuum energy. This bubble undergoes relativistic collapse, with highly Lorentz contracted bubble walls, and may concentrate the entire energy into extremely small regions. Eventually different portions of bubble wall collide, with the energy being released in the form of particle production. Thermalization of this system can lead to very high temperatures. With a reasonably conservative set of parameters, at LHC, the temperature of the hot spot can reach as high as 3 GeV, and well above it with more optimistic parameters. Such a hot spot can leave signals like large $P_T$ partons, dileptons, and enhanced production of heavy quarks. We also briefly discuss a speculative possibility where the electroweak symmetry may get restored in the highly dense region resulting from the decay of the bubble wall via the phenomenon of non-thermal symmetry restoration (which is usually employed in models of pre-heating after inflation). If that could happen then the possibility may arise of observing sphaleron induced baryon number violation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Stochastic Production Of Kink-Antikink Pairs In The Presence Of An Oscillating Background

We numerically investigate the production of kink-antikink pairs in a $(1+1)$ dimensional $ϕ^4$ field theory subject to white noise and periodic driving. The twin effects of noise and periodic driving acting in conjunction lead to considerable enhancement in the kink density compared to the thermal equilibrium value, for low dissipation coefficients and for a specific range of frequencies of the oscillating background. The dependence of the kink-density on the temperature of the heat bath, the amplitude of the oscillating background and value of the dissipation coefficient is also investigated. An interesting feature of our result is that kink-antikink production occurs even though the system always remains in the broken symmetry phase.

Measuring Cosmic Defect Correlations in Liquid Crystals

From the theory of topological defect formation proposed for the early universe, the so called Kibble mechanism, it follows that the density correlation functions of defects and anti-defects in a given system should be completely determined in terms of a single length scale $ξ$, the relevant domain size. Thus, when lengths are expressed in units of $ξ$, these distributions should show universal behavior, depending only on the symmetry of the order parameter, and space dimensions. We have verified this prediction by analyzing the distributions of defects/anti-defects formed in the isotropic-nematic phase transition in a thin layer of nematic liquid crystals. Our experimental results confirm this prediction and are in reasonable agreement with the results of numerical simulations.

Resonant Production of Topological Defects

We describe a novel phenomenon in which vortices are produced due to resonant oscillations of a scalar field which is driven by a periodically varying temperature T, with T remaining much below the critical temperature $T_c$. Also, in a rapid heating of a localized region to a temperature {\it below} $T_c$, far separated vortex and antivortex can form. We compare our results with recent models of defect production during reheating after inflation. We also discuss possible experimental tests of our predictions of topological defect production {\it without} ever going through a phase transition.
