Interacting Hofstadter spectrum of atoms in an artificial gauge field

Motivated by experimental advances in the synthesis of gauge potentials for ultracold atoms, we consider the superfluid phase of interacting bosons on a square lattice in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that superfluid order implies spatial symmetry breaking, and predict clear signatures of many-body effects in time-of-flight measurements. By developing a Bogoliubov expansion based on the exact Hofstadter spectrum, we find the dispersion of the quasiparticle modes within the superfluid phase, and describe the consequences for Bragg spectroscopy measurements. The theory also provides an estimate of the critical interaction strength at the transition to the Mott insulator phase.

Competition between pairing and ferromagnetic instabilities in ultracold Fermi gases near Feshbach resonances

We study the quench dynamics of a two-component ultracold Fermi gas from the weak into the strong interaction regime, where the short time dynamics are governed by the exponential growth rate of unstable collective modes. We obtain an effective interaction that takes into account both Pauli blocking and the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude near a Feshbach resonance. Using this interaction we analyze the competing instabilities towards Stoner ferromagnetism and pairing.

Observation of Elastic Doublon Decay in the Fermi-Hubbard Model

We investigate the decay of highly excited states of ultracold fermions in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Starting from a repulsive Fermi-Hubbard system near half filling, we generate additional doubly occupied sites (doublons) by lattice modulation. The subsequent relaxation back to thermal equilibrium is monitored over time. The measured doublon lifetime covers two orders of magnitude. In units of the tunneling time h/J it is found to depend exponentially on the ratio of on-site interaction energy U to kinetic energy J. We argue that the dominant mechanism for the relaxation is a high order scattering process involving several single fermions as scattering partners. A many-body calculation is carried out using diagrammatic methods, yielding good agreement with the data.

Lifetime of double occupancies in the Fermi-Hubbard model

We investigate the decay of artificially created double occupancies in a repulsive Fermi-Hubbard system in the strongly interacting limit using diagrammatic many-body theory and experiments with ultracold fermions on optical lattices. The lifetime of the doublons is found to scale exponentially with the ratio of the on-site repulsion to the bandwidth. We show that the dominant decay process in presence of background holes is the excitation of a large number of particle hole pairs to absorb the energy of the doublon. We also show that the strongly interacting nature of the background state is crucial in obtaining the correct estimate of the doublon lifetime in these systems. The theoretical estimates and the experimental data are in fair quantitative agreement.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of interacting Fermi systems in quench experiments

We describe the dynamics of two component non-interacting ultracold Fermions which are initially in thermal equilibrium and undergo a rapid quench to either the repulsive or attractive side of a Feshbach resonance. The short time dynamics is dominated by the exponentially growing collective modes. We study the Stoner instability and formation of ferromagnetic textures on the repulsive side, and the pairing instability towards BCS or FFLO-like states (determined by the population imbalance) on the attractive side. In each case, we evaluate the growth rate of unstable modes and predict the typical lengthscale of textures to be formed.

Detecting d-wave superfluid and d-density wave states of ultracold Fermions on optical lattices

We propose a pump probe experiment for detecting the d-wave superfluid and d-density wave phases of ultracold Fermions on an optical lattice. The pump consists of periodic modulations of the optical lattice intensity which creates quasiparticle pairs in these systems. The changes in the momentum distribution under the drive can be used to measure quasiparticle dispersion and gap anisotropy. Further, we show that the pattern of peaks and dips in the spin selective density-density correlation function provides a phase sensitive probe of the symmetry of the order parameter in these systems.

Modulation Spectroscopy and Dynamics of Double Occupancies in a Fermionic Mott Insulator

We calculate the rate of creation of double occupancies in a 3D Fermionic Mott insulator near half-filling by modulation of optical lattice potential. At high temperatures, incoherent holes lead to a broad response peaked at the Hubbard repulsion $U$. At low temperatures, antiferromagnetic order leads to a coherent peak for the hole along with broad features representing spin wave shake-off processes. This is manifested in the doublon creation rate as a sharp absorption edge and oscillations as a function of modulating frequency. Thus, modulation spectroscopy can be used as a probe of antiferromagnetic order and nature of quasiparticle excitations in the system.

Quantum Fluctuations in the Superfluid State of the BCS-BEC Crossover

We determine the effects of quantum fluctuations about the T=0 mean field solution of the BCS-BEC crossover in a dilute Fermi gas using the functional integral method. These fluctuations are described in terms of the zero point motion of collective modes and the virtual scattering of gapped quasiparticles. We calculate their effects on various measurable properties, including chemical potential, ground state energy, the gap, the speed of sound and the Landau critical velocity. At unitarity, we find excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo and experimental results. In the BCS limit, we show analytically that we obtain Fermi liquid interaction corrections to thermodynamics including the Hartree shift. In the BEC limit, we show that the theory leads to an approximate description of the reduction of the scattering length for bosonic molecules and also obtain quantum depletion of the Lee-Yang form. At the end of the paper, we describe a method to include feedback of quantum fluctuations into the gap equation, and discuss the problems of self-consistent calculations in satisfying Goldstone's theorem and obtaining ultraviolet finite results at unitarity.

Breakdown of the Thomas Fermi approximation for polarized Fermi gases

We use Bogoliubov de-Gennes theory to show that the commonly used Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA) can fail in describing polarized unitary gases in anisotropic harmonic traps. We find a magnetized superfluid region inside the trap, with order parameter oscillations, even though there is no such stable bulk phase. This leads to magnetization profiles that deviate from contours of constant potential energy. We determine how this violation scales with trap anisotropy and number of particles, and show that we are able to account for important differences between the MIT and Rice experiments.

Can one determine the underlying Fermi surface in the superconducting state of strongly correlated superconductors?

The question of determining the underlying Fermi surface (FS) that is gapped by superconductivity (SC) is of central importance in strongly correlated systems, particularly in view of angle-resolved photoemission experiments. Here we explore various definitions of the FS in the superconducting state using the zero-energy Green's function, the excitation spectrum and the momentum distribution. We examine (a) d-wave SC in high Tc cuprates, and (b) the s-wave superfluid in the BCS-BEC crossover. In each case we show that the various definitions agree, to a large extent, but all of them violate the Luttinger count and do not enclose the total electron density. We discuss the important role of chemical potential renormalization and incoherent spectral weight in this violation.

Particle-Hole Asymmetry in Doped Mott Insulators: Implications for Tunneling and Photoemission Spectroscopies

In a system with strong local repulsive interactions it should be more difficult to add an electron than to extract one. We make this idea precise by deriving various exact sum rules for the one-particle spectral function independent of the details of the Hamiltonian describing the system and of the nature of the ground state. We extend these results using a variational ansatz for the superconducting ground state and low lying excitations. Our results shed light on the striking asymmetry in the tunneling spectra of high Tc superconductors and should also be useful in estimating the local doping variations in inhomogeneous materials.
