Understanding the electrochemical performance and diffusion kinetics of HC$||$Na$_3$V$_2$(PO$_4$)$_3$/C full cell battery for energy storage applications

The efficient energy storage devices are crucial to meet the soaring global energy demand for sustainable future. Recently, the sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as one of the excellent cost effective solution due to the uniform geographical distribution and abundance of sodium. Here, we use hard carbon (HC) as an anode and Na$_3$V$_2$(PO$_4$)$_3$/C (NVP/C) as a cathode to fabricate a HC$||$NVP/C full cell battery and understand its electrochemical performance and diffusion kinetics. These materials are characterized through the analysis of x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy to confirm their single phase and structure. The full cell demonstrates a high operating voltage of $\sim$3.3 V, with minimal polarization of 0.05 V, attributed to the lower working voltage of the HC. Interestingly, for the full cell battery we find the specific capacity of around 70 mAh/g at 0.1 C and even around 35 mAh/g at high current rate of 5 C along with high rate capability up to 55 cycles. The diffusion kinetics of the full cell battery is investigated through detailed analysis of CV curves at various scan rates, and the diffusion coefficient is found to be 5--8$\times$10$^{-11}$ cm$^2$/s for the anodic as well as cathodic peaks.

Dielectric behavior and impedance spectroscopy of Niobium substituted Lanthanum based orthovanadates at high temperatures

We present the detailed study of the temperature dependent dielectric properties, impedance spectroscopy and electrical conductivity of LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$ ($x=$ 0-1) samples prepared by the solid-state reaction method. The dielectric constant ($ε_r'$) increases (decreases) with increase in the temperature (frequency); while, the magnitude of $ε_r'$ remains almost invariant (order of 10$^4$ at 100~Hz and 600\degree C) with $x$. The single phase $x=$ 0 (monoclinic-monazite, $P2_1/n$) and $x =$ 1 (monoclinic fergusonite, $I2/a$) samples show the lower values of loss factor [tan$δ=$ (4-8)] as compared to the $x=$ 0-0.8 samples [tan$δ=$(12-18)] having mixed tetragonal and monoclinic phases, which indicates the strong correlation between the crystal structure and the dielectric properties. The real part of impedance decreases with both temperature and frequency, and the observed weak relaxation remains almost unaltered with $x$. The imaginary part of impedance shows strong relaxation peaks shifting towards higher temperatures with frequency, which is attributed to the effect of grains, grain boundaries, and electrodes in the samples. The activation energy of the relaxation process is estimated to be 0.8-1.0~eV for the $x=$ 0-0.6 samples, and $\approx$1.4~eV for the $x=$ 0.8; whereas the $x=$ 1 sample shows two values ($\approx$0.5~eV and $\approx$1.0~eV) in the higher and lower temperature range, respectively. Further, the change in total conductivity with the angular frequency, which found to be in the range of 10$^{-3}$ to 10$^{-5}$~S/m, is fitted using the Jonsher power law. The analysis suggests the OLPT model for all the samples, whereas the $x$ = 1 sample exhibit a transition near 480\degree C and at higher temperatures it shows NSPT and QMT. This transition is corroborated by the tangent loss curves and may be associated with the change in structure.

Structural, vibrational and electronic properties of Nb substituted orthovanadates LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$

We investigate the structural, vibrational, morphological, and electronic properties of Nb substituted orthovanadate LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$ samples prepared by the solid-state reaction method. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals the presence of three crystal structures [monoclinic monazite ($m-m$) type for the $x=$ 0, two-phase equilibrium of monoclinic monazite ($m-m$) and tetragonal scheelite ($t-s$) type for the 0.2$\leq$$x$$\leq$0.8, and monoclinic fergusonite ($m-f$) type for the $x=$ 1 samples] with an increase in Nb$^{5+}$ concentration. The Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to study the vibrational and electronic properties of all the samples, respectively. In order to choose an excitation wavelength that does not cause undesirable fluorescence and has observable intensities of all the vibrational modes, the Raman spectra are collected using 532 nm, 633 nm, and 785 nm laser lines. With increasing the Nb$^{5+}$ concentration, new Raman modes associated with Nb-bonds are clearly visible and the intensity of V-bonds assigned modes is decreasing. The XPS analysis shows the unchanged 3+ oxidation state of La ion where the intensity of the V 2$p$ core-level decreases while the Nb 3$d$ core-level increases with $x$. The equal spin-orbit energy splitting of the states is confirmed by the average energy difference (across La core-level spectra for all the samples) for state I as well as bonding and anti-bonding of state II. Interesting, the relative intensity of La 3$d$ state I and state II show systematic change with Nb doping altering the metal ligand overlap. We discuss and provide insight into the evolution of the structural, morphological, and chemical features with Nb substitution in LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$ samples.

Effect of the growth orientation on the physical properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ thin films

We study the effect of the growth orientation on the structural, electronic, and hence transport properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ thin films grown on the orthorhombic NGO(100) and cubic MgO(100) substrates. The x-ray diffraction patterns show the growth of the thin film along $a$-axis resulting in the asymmetric ($b\neq c$) in-plane compressive strain in case of NGO(100), whereas along $c$-axis with tensile strain in case of MgO(100) substrate. The temperature dependent resistivity measurements indicate the lower electronic conductivity for the film grown on the NGO(100) substrate, which is found to be correlated with the higher degree of the oxygen deficiencies and hence larger concentration of the insulating Co$^{2+}$ in this sample. Further, the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show that Sr and Nb are present in the 2+ and 4+ valence state, whereas Co exist in the 2+, 3+ as well as 4+ states, fraction of which was found to vary with the growth orientation. Moreover, the analysis of leakage current using the sum exponent model indicate the presence of two different relaxation mechanisms in these samples.

Diffusion mechanism and electrochemical investigation of 1T phase Al-MoS$_{2}$@rGO nano-composite as a high-performance anode for sodium-ion batteries

We report the electrochemical investigation of 5% Al doped MoS$_2$@rGO composite as a high-performance anode for sodium (Na)-ion batteries. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the Al doping increase the interlayer spacing of (002) plane of MoS$_2$ nanosheets and form a stable 1T phase. The galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements show the specific capacity stable around 450, 400, 350, 300 and 200 mAhg$^{-1}$ at current densities of 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1~Ag$^{-1}$, respectively. Also, we observe the capacity retentions of 86% and 66% at 0.1 and 0.3 Ag$^{-1}$, respectively, over 200 cycles with a consistent Coulombic efficiency of nearly 100%. The cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to find the kinetic behavior and the obtained value of diffusion coefficient falls in the range of 10$^{-10}$ to 10$^{-12}$ cm$^2$s$^{-1}$. Intriguingly, the in-situ EIS also explains the electrochemical kinetics of the electrode at different charge-discharge states with the variation of charge transfer resistance. Moreover, the post cycling investigation using ex-situ XRD and photoemission spectroscopy indicate the coexistence of 1T/2H phase and field-emission scanning electron microscopy confirm the stable morphology after 500 cycles. Also, the Na-ion transport properties are calculated for 1T Al--MoS$_2$@rGO interface and Al--MoS$_2$--MoS$_2$ interlayer host structure by theoretical calculations using density functional theory.

Electrochemical investigation of MoSeTe as an anode for sodium-ion batteries

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as an efficient alternative for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to the natural abundance and low cost of sodium than lithium. In this context, the anode materials play a vital role in rechargeable batteries to acquire high energy and power density. In order to demonstrate transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) as potential anode materials, we have synthesized MoSeTe sample by conventional flux method, and the structure and morphology are characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. These characterisations confirm the hexagonal crystal symmetry with p63/mmc space group and layered morphology of MoSeTe. We investigate the electrochemical performance of a MoSeTe as a negative electrode (anode) for SIBs in the working potential range of 0.01 to 3.0~V. In a half-cell configuration, the MoSeTe as an anode and Na metal as counter/reference electrode exhibits significant initial specific discharge capacities of around 475 and 355 mAhg$^{-1}$ at current densities of 50 and 100 mAg$^{-1}$, respectively. However, the capacity degraded significantly like $\approx$200~mAhg$^{-1}$ in 2nd cycle, but having $\approx$100\% Coulombic efficiency, which suggest for further modification in this material to improve its stability. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) study reveals the reversibility of the material after 1st cycle, resulting no change in the initial peak positions. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements affirms the smaller charge transfer resistance of fresh cells than the cells after 10th cycle. Moreover, the extracted diffusion coefficient is found to be of the order of 10$^{-14}$ cm$^2$s$^{-1}$.

High temperature dielectric and impedance spectroscopy study of LaCo$_{0.7}$Nb$_{0.3}$O$_3$

We report the high temperature dielectric and {\it ac} impedance spectroscopy investigation of Nb substituted LaCo$_{0.7}$Nb$_{0.3}$O$_3$ polycrystalline sample. The maximum dielectric constant value was observed $\approx$1400 at around 400~K where the peak value shows a decreasing trend at higher temperatures and frequency. Similar variation was reflected in the dielectric loss (tan$δ$) behavior with temperature, which shows the thermal activation of the charge carriers in the material. The analysis of high temperature impedance spectroscopy data shows the grain and grain boundary contributions by fitting the Nyquist plots to the equivalent circuit. From the analysis of the impedance and modulus spectra, it was possible to discern between the effects of overlapping grains, grain boundaries, and electrode interfaces. The relaxation time decreases with an increase in the temperature and the activation energy changes from 0.44~eV to 0.56~eV at around 400~K, which is due to involvement of thermal activation in the conduction of charge carriers. The conductivity is found to be increased with temperature for a given frequency, which again shows the semiconducting behavior. Whereas the conductivity increases with increase in frequency at lower temperatures. Also, the conductivity almost saturates with frequency at high temperatures.

Structural, magnetic and transport properties of Co$_2$CrAl epitaxial thin films

We report the physical properties of Co$_2$CrAl Heusler alloy epitaxial thin films grown on single crystalline MgO(001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition technique. The x-ray diffraction pattern in $θ$-2$θ$ mode showed the film growth in single phase B2-type ordered cubic structure with the presence of (002) and (004) peaks, and the film oriented along the MgO(001) direction. The $ϕ$~scan along the (220) plane confirms the four-fold symmetry and the epitaxial growth relation found to be Co$_2$CrAl(001)[100]$\vert$$\vert$MgO(001)[110]. The thickness of about 12~nm is extracted through the analysis of x-ray reflectivity data. The isothermal magnetization (M--H) curves confirm the ferromagnetic (FM) nature of the thin film having significant hysteresis at 5 and 300~K. From the in-plane M--H curves, the saturation magnetization values are determined to be 2.1~$μ$$_{\rm B}$/f.u.~at 5~K and 1.6~$μ$$_{\rm B}$/f.u. at 300~K, which suggests the soft FM behavior in the film having the coercive field $\approx$ 522~Oe at 5~K. The thermo-magnetization measurements at 500~Oe magnetic field show the bifurcation between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled curves below about 100~K. The normalized field-cooled magnetization curve follows the T$^2$ dependency, and the analysis reveal the Curie temperature around 335$\pm$11~K. Moreover, the low-temperature resistivity indicates semiconducting behavior with the temperature, and we find a negative temperature coefficient of resistivity (5.2 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$ /K).

Dielectric properties and impedance spectroscopy of NASICON type Na$_3$Zr$_2$Si$_2$PO$_{12}$

We report the temperature dependent dielectric properties and impedance spectroscopy investigation of Na$_3$Zr$_2$Si$_2$PO$_{12}$ in the frequency range of 20 Hz--2 MHz. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction pattern confirms the monoclinic phase with C2/c space group. The {\it d.c.} resistivity behavior shows its strong insulating nature at low temperatures, and follows Arrhenius law of thermal conduction with an activation energy of 0.68 eV. The decrease in electric permittivity ($ε_r$) with frequency is explained based on the space polarization mechanism and its increment with temperature by thermal activation of charge carriers. The dielectric loss (D=tan$δ$) peak follows the Arrhenius law of thermal activation with an energy of 0.25 eV. We observe an enhancement in {\it a.c.} conductivity with frequency and temperature due to the decrease in the activation energy, which results in enhancing the conduction between defect states. Further, we observe an abrupt increase in the {\it a.c.} conductivity at high frequencies, which is explained using the universal Jonschers power law. The analysis of {\it a.c.} conductivity shows two types of conduction mechanisms namely correlated barrier hopping and non-overlapping small polaron tunnelling in the measured temperature range. The imaginary part of the electric modulus confirms the non-Debye type relaxation in the sample. The shifting of the relaxation peak towards higher frequency side with an increase in temperature ensures its thermally activated nature. The scaling behavior of the electric modulus shows similar type of relaxation over the measured temperature range. The combined analysis of electric modulus and impedance with frequency shows the short-range mobility of charge carriers.

Na$_{4}$Co$_{3}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$P$_{2}$O$_{7}$/NC composite as a negative electrode for sodium-ion batteries

In recent years, the mixed phosphates based polyanionic electrode materials have attracted great attention in sodium-ion batteries due to their structural stability during cycling and open framework for ion diffusion. Here, we report the electrochemical performance of Na$_{4}$Co$_{3}$(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$P$_{2}$O$_{7}$/nitrogen doped carbon (NCPP/NC) composite as a negative electrode (anode) for sodium ion batteries in the working potential range of 0.01--3.0~V. It delivers a reversible discharge capacity of 250~mAhg$^{-1}$ at 0.5~C current rate, which corresponds to the insertion/extraction of four sodium ions. The rate capability study indicates the reversible mechanism and highly stable capacity (61 mAhg$^{-1}$) even at high rate up to 5~C as compared to pristine NCPP. The incorporation of the N doped carbon spheres in the composite is expected to enhance the electronic/ionic conductivity, which plays an important role in improving the performance and stability up to 400 cycles at 1~C rate. Intriguingly, the analysis of cyclic voltammetry data measured at different scan rates confirm the capacitive/diffusive controlled mechanism and the extracted diffusion coefficient is found to be around 10$^{-10}$ cm$^2$s$^{-1}$. Our results demonstrate that the NCPP/NC composite is also a potential candidate as anode in sodium-ion batteries due to its three dimensional framework, cost effectiveness, enhanced specific capacity as well as further possibility of improving the stability.

Electrochemical Analysis of Na$_{0.74}$Co$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_2$ ($x=$ 0, 0.05) as Cathode Materials in Sodium-ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have received significant attention as promising alternative for energy storage applications owing to the large availability and low cost of sodium. In this paper we study the electrochemical behavior of Na$_{0.74}$Co$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_2$ ($x=$ 0 and 0.05 samples), synthesized via solid-state reaction. The Rietveld refinement of x-ray diffraction patterns reveals the hexagonal crystal symmetry with P63/mmc space group. The Na$_{0.74}$Co$_{0.95}$Nb$_{0.05}$O$_2$ cathode exhibits a specific capacity of about 91 mAhg$^{-1}$ at a current density of 6 mAg$^{-1}$, whereas Na$_{0.74}$CoO$_2$ exhibits comparatively low specific capacity (70 mAhg$^{-1}$ at a current density of 6 mAg$^{-1}$). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electron impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed to determine the diffusion coefficient of Na, which found to be in the range of 10$^{-10}$ cm$^2$s$^{-1}$.

Electrochemical properties of Na$_{0.66}$V$_4$O$_{10}$ nanostructures as cathode material in rechargeable batteries for energy storage applications

We report the electrochemical performance of nanostructures of Na$_{0.66}$V$_4$O$_{10}$ as cathode material for rechargeable batteries. The Rietveld refinement of room temperature x-ray diffraction pattern shows the monoclinic phase with C2/m space group. The cyclic voltammetry curves of prepared half-cells exhibit redox peaks at ~3.1 and 2.6~V, which are due to two-phase transition reaction between V$^{5+/4+}$ and can be assigned to the single step deintercalation/intercalation of Na-ion. We observe a good cycling stability with specific discharge capacity (measured vs. Na$^+$/Na) between 80 ($\pm$2) and 30 ($\pm$2) mAh g$^{-1}$ at a current density 3 and 50~mA g$^{-1}$, respectively. The electrochemical performance of Na$_{0.66}$V$_4$O$_{10}$ electrode was also tested with Li anode, which showed higher capacity, but decay faster than Na. Using density functional theory, we calculate the Na vacancy formation energies; 3.37~eV in the bulk of the material and 2.52~eV on the (100) surface, which underlines the importance of nanostructures.

Growth and Characterization of Fe0.95Se0.6Te0.4 Single Crystal

In this paper we present the single crystal growth of Fe0.95Se0.6Te0.4 high TC superconducting sample by the modified Bridgman technique. The x-ray diffraction pattern shows the single crystal nature of the sample, as only (00l) peaks are detectable. The stoichiometric composition has been verified by energy dispersive x-ray analysis. The superconducting transition temperature at 14 K was confirmed through DC magnetization (ZFC-FC) and resistivity measurements. By analyzing the isothermal M-H curves, we determined the value of H_c1 (0) ~360 Oe by extrapolating the data. The temperature coefficient of resistivity obtained using the power law fitting was found to be 0.6. The obtained Raman spectra at room temperature can be interpreted with the tetragonal crystal structure and space group P4/nmm.

Investigation of the structural, electronic, transport and magnetic properties of Co$_2$FeGa Heusler alloy nanoparticles

We report the structural, transport, electronic, and magnetic properties of Co$_2$FeGa Heusler alloy nanoparticles. The Rietveld refinements of x-ray diffraction (XRD) data with the space group Fm$\bar {3}$m clearly demonstrates that the nanoparticles are of single phase. The particle size (D) decreases with increasing the SiO$_2$ concentration. The Bragg peak positions and the inter-planer spacing extracted from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image and selected area electron diffraction are in well agreement with data obtained from XRD. The coercivity initially increases from 127~Oe to 208~Oe between D = 8.5~nm and 12.5~nm, following the D$^{-3/2}$ dependence and then decreases with further increasing D up to 21.5~nm with a D$^{-1}$ dependence, indicating the transition from single domain to multidomain regime. The effective magnetic anisotropic constant behaves similarly as coercivity, which confirms this transition. A complex scattering mechanisms have been fitted to explain the electronic transport properties of these nanoparticles. In addition we have studied core-level and valence band spectra using photoemission spectroscopy, which confirm the hybridization between $d$ states of Co/Fe. Further nanoparticle samples synthesized by co-precipitation method show higher saturation magnetization. The presence of Raman active modes can be associated with the high chemical ordering, which motivates for detailed temperature dependent structural investigation using synchrotron radiation and neutron sources.

Structural and Magnetic Characterizations of Co2FeGa/SiO2 Nanoparticles Prepared via Chemical Route

We report the synthesis of Co2FeGa/SiO2 nanoparticles by sol-gel method and characterization using x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and magnetic measurements. The Rietveld refinements of XRD data with space group Fm-3m clearly show the formation of A2 disorder single phase and the lattice constant is found to be 5.738 Å. The energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirm the elemental composition close the desired values. The value of coercivity is found to be around 283 Oe and 126 Oe, measured at 10 K and 300 K, respectively. We observed the saturation magnetization significantly lower than expected from Slater-Pauling rule. This decrease in the magnetic moment might be due to the presence of amorphous SiO2 during the synthesis process. A large content of small size SiO2 particles along with Co2FeGa nanoparticles are also found in TEM study.
