Higher Spins and Yangian Symmetries

The relation between the bosonic higher spin ${\cal W}_\infty[λ]$ algebra, the affine Yangian of $\mathfrak{gl}_{1}$, and the SH$^c$ algebra is established in detail. For generic $λ$ we find explicit expressions for the low-lying ${\cal W}_\infty[λ]$ modes in terms of the affine Yangian generators, and deduce from this the precise identification between $λ$ and the parameters of the affine Yangian. Furthermore, for the free field cases corresponding to $λ=0$ and $λ=1$ we give closed-form expressions for the affine Yangian generators in terms of the free fields. Interestingly, the relation between the ${\cal W}_\infty$ modes and those of the affine Yangian is a non-local one, in general. We also establish the explicit dictionary between the affine Yangian and the SH$^c$ generators. Given that Yangian algebras are the hallmark of integrability, these identifications should pave the way towards uncovering the relation between the integrable and the higher spin symmetries.

A Mellin space approach to the conformal bootstrap

We describe in more detail our approach to the conformal bootstrap which uses the Mellin representation of $CFT_d$ four point functions and expands them in terms of crossing symmetric combinations of $AdS_{d+1}$ Witten exchange functions. We consider arbitrary external scalar operators and set up the conditions for consistency with the operator product expansion. Namely, we demand cancellation of spurious powers (of the cross ratios, in position space) which translate into spurious poles in Mellin space. We discuss two contexts in which we can immediately apply this method by imposing the simplest set of constraint equations. The first is the epsilon expansion. We mostly focus on the Wilson-Fisher fixed point as studied in an epsilon expansion about $d=4$. We reproduce Feynman diagram results for operator dimensions to $O(ε^3)$ rather straightforwardly. This approach also yields new analytic predictions for OPE coefficients to the same order which fit nicely with recent numerical estimates for the Ising model (at $ε=1$). We will also mention some leading order results for scalar theories near three and six dimensions. The second context is a large spin expansion, in any dimension, where we are able to reproduce and go a bit beyond some of the results recently obtained using the (double) light cone expansion. We also have a preliminary discussion about numerical implementation of the above bootstrap scheme in the absence of a small parameter.

String Theory as a Higher Spin Theory

The symmetries of string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ at the dual of the symmetric product orbifold point are described by a so-called Higher Spin Square (HSS). We show that the massive string spectrum in this background organises itself in terms of representations of this HSS, just as the matter in a conventional higher spin theory does so in terms of representations of the higher spin algebra. In particular, the entire untwisted sector of the orbifold can be viewed as the Fock space built out of the multiparticle states of a single representation of the HSS, the so-called `minimal' representation. The states in the twisted sector can be described in terms of tensor products of a novel family of representations that are somewhat larger than the minimal one.

Stringy Symmetries and the Higher Spin Square

Tensionless string theory on AdS3 x S3 x T4, as captured by a free symmetric product orbifold, has a large set of conserved currents which can be usefully organised in terms of representations of a N=(4,4) supersymmetric higher spin algebra. In this paper we focus on the single particle currents which generate the asymptotic stringy symmetry algebra on AdS3, and whose wedge modes describe the unbroken gauge symmetries of string theory in this background. We show that this global subalgebra contains two distinct higher spin algebras that generate the full algebra as a `higher spin square'. The resulting unbroken stringy symmetry algebra is exponentially larger than the two individual higher spin algebras.

Higher Spins & Strings

It is natural to believe that the free symmetric product orbifold CFT is dual to the tensionless limit of string theory on AdS3 x S3 x T4. At this point in moduli space, string theory is expected to contain a Vasiliev higher spin theory as a subsector. We confirm this picture explicitly by showing that the large level limit of the N=4 cosets of arXiv:1305.4181, that are dual to a higher spin theory on AdS3, indeed describe a closed subsector of the symmetric product orbifold. Furthermore, we reorganise the full partition function of the symmetric product orbifold in terms of representations of the higher spin algebra (or rather its $W_{\infty}$ extension). In particular, the unbroken stringy symmetries of the tensionless limit are captured by a large chiral algebra which we can describe explicitly in terms of an infinite sum of $W_{\infty}$ representations, thereby exhibiting a vast extension of the conventional higher spin symmetry.

Large N=4 Holography

The class of 2d minimal model CFTs with higher spin AdS3 duals is extended to theories with large N=4 superconformal symmetry. We construct a higher spin theory based on the global D(2,1|alpha) superalgebra, and propose a large N family of cosets as a dual CFT description. We also indicate how a non-abelian version of this Vasiliev higher spin theory might give an alternative description of IIB string theory on an AdS3 x S3 x S3 x S1 background.

The Spectrum of Light States in Large N Minimal Models

$W_{N,k}$ minimal models possess an interesting class of `light' primaries which control much of the low energy density of states in the large $N$ 't Hooft limit. In this paper we conduct a detailed exploration of their distribution using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. We also make some observations about the density of states of the full CFT. Our results appear to support the contention that there is no finite temperature analogue of the Hawking-Page transition in these systems.

Triality in Minimal Model Holography

The non-linear W_{\infty}[μ] symmetry algebra underlies the duality between the W_N minimal model CFTs and the hs[μ] higher spin theory on AdS_3. It is shown how the structure of this symmetry algebra at the quantum level, i.e. for finite central charge, can be determined completely. The resulting algebra exhibits an exact equivalence (a`triality') between three (generically) distinct values of the parameter μ. This explains, among other things, the agreement of symmetries between the W_N minimal models and the bulk higher spin theory. We also study the consequences of this triality for some of the simplest W_{\infty}[μ] representations, thereby clarifying the analytic continuation between the`light states' of the minimal models and conical defect solutions in the bulk. These considerations also lead us to propose that one of the two scalar fields in the bulk actually has a non-perturbative origin.

Correlators in the Simplest Gauge-String Duality

In this note we compare planar correlators such as $< \prod_i^n Tr M^{2k_i} >$ in the Gaussian matrix model with corresponding genus zero correlators of the A-model topological string theory on $P^1$. We find a simple relation between them which provides additional evidence for the duality between the two theories, as proposed in arXiv:1104.2386.

Strange Metals in One Spatial Dimension

We consider 1+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theory coupled to a multiplet of massive Dirac fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. The only global symmetry of this theory is a U(1) associated with the conserved Dirac fermion number, and we study the theory at variable, non-zero densities. The high density limit is characterized by a deconfined Fermi surface state with Fermi wavevector equal to that of free gauge-charged fermions. Its low energy fluctuations are described by a coset conformal field theory with central charge c=(N^2-1)/3 and an emergent N=(2,2) supersymmetry: the U(1) fermion number symmetry becomes an R-symmetry. We determine the exact scaling dimensions of the operators associated with Friedel oscillations and pairing correlations. For N>2, we find that the symmetries allow relevant perturbations to this state. We discuss aspects of the N->infty limit, and its possible dual description in AdS3 involving string theory or higher-spin gauge theory. We also discuss the low density limit of the theory by computing the low lying bound state spectrum of the large N gauge theory numerically at zero density, using discretized light cone quantization.

An AdS_3 Dual for Minimal Model CFTs

We propose a duality between the 2d W_N minimal models in the large N 't Hooft limit, and a family of higher spin theories on AdS_3. The 2d CFTs can be described as WZW coset models, and include, for N=2, the usual Virasoro unitary series. The dual bulk theory contains, in addition to the massless higher spin fields, two complex scalars (of equal mass). The mass is directly related to the 't Hooft coupling constant of the dual CFT. We give convincing evidence that the spectra of the two theories match precisely for all values of the 't Hooft coupling. We also show that the RG flows in the 2d CFT agree exactly with the usual AdS/CFT prediction of the gravity theory. Our proposal is in many ways analogous to the Klebanov-Polyakov conjecture for an AdS_4 dual for the singlet sector of large N vector models.

Conical Defects in Higher Spin Theories

We study conical defect geometries in the SL(N) Chern-Simons formulation of higher spin gauge theories in AdS_3. We argue that (for N\geq 4) there are special values of the deficit angle for which these geometries are actually smooth configurations of the underlying theory. We also exhibit a gauge in which these geometries can be viewed as wormholes interpolating between two distinct asymptotically AdS_3 spacetimes. Remarkably, the spectrum of smooth SL(N,C) solutions, after an appropriate analytic continuation, exactly matches that of the so-called "light primaries" in the minimal model W_N CFTs at finite N. This gives a candidate bulk interpretation of the latter states in the holographic duality proposed in [1].

The Heat Kernel on $AdS$

We explicitly evaluate the heat kernel for the Laplacian of arbitrary spin tensor fields on the thermal quotient of (Euclidean) $AdS_N$ for $N\geq 3$ using the group theoretic techniques employed for $AdS_3$ in arXiv:0911.5085. Our approach is general and can be used, in principle, for other quotients as well as other symmetric spaces.

Partition Functions of Holographic Minimal Models

The partition function of the W_N minimal model CFT is computed in the large N 't Hooft limit and compared to the spectrum of the proposed holographic dual, a 3d higher spin gravity theory coupled to massive scalar fields. At finite N, the CFT contains additional light states that are not visible in the perturbative gravity theory. We carefully define the large N limit, and give evidence that, at N = infinity, the additional states become null and decouple from all correlation functions. The surviving states are shown to match precisely (for all values of the 't Hooft coupling) with the spectrum of the higher spin gravity theory. The agreement between bulk and boundary is partially explained by symmetry considerations involving the conjectured equivalence between the W_N algebra in the large N limit and the higher spin algebra of the Vasiliev theory.

What is the Simplest Gauge-String Duality?

We make a proposal for the string dual to the simplest large $N$ theory, the Gaussian matrix integral in the 'tHooft limit, and how this dual description emerges from double line graphs. This is a specific realisation of the general approach to gauge-string duality which associates worldsheet riemann surfaces to the Feynman-'tHooft diagrams of a large N gauge theory. We show that a particular version (proposed by Razamat) of this connection, involving integer Strebel differentials, naturally explains the combinatorics of Gaussian matrix correlators. We find that the correlators can be explicitly realised as a sum over a special class of holomorphic maps (Belyi maps) from the worldsheet to a {\it target space} ${\mathbb P}^1$. We are led to identify this target space with the riemann surface associated with the (eigenvalues of the) matrix model. In the process, an AdS/CFT like dictionary, for arbitrary correlators of single trace operators, also emerges in which the holomorphic maps play the role of stringy Witten diagrams. Finally, we provide some evidence that the above string dual is the conventional A-model topological string theory on ${\mathbb P}^1$.

Quantum W-symmetry in AdS_3

It has recently been argued that, classically, massless higher spin theories in AdS_3 have an enlarged W_N-symmetry as the algebra of asymptotic isometries. In this note we provide evidence that this symmetry is realised (perturbatively) in the quantum theory. We perform a one loop computation of the fluctuations for a massless spin $s$ field around a thermal AdS_3 background. The resulting determinants are evaluated using the heat kernel techniques of arXiv:0911.5085. The answer factorises holomorphically, and the contributions from the various spin $s$ fields organise themselves into vacuum characters of the W_N symmetry. For the case of the hs(1,1) theory consisting of an infinite tower of massless higher spin particles, the resulting answer can be simply expressed in terms of (two copies of) the MacMahon function.

GCA in 2d

We make a detailed study of the infinite dimensional Galilean Conformal Algebra (GCA) in the case of two spacetime dimensions. Classically, this algebra is precisely obtained from a contraction of the generators of the relativistic conformal symmetry in 2d. Here we find quantum mechanical realisations of the (centrally extended) GCA by considering scaling limits of certain 2d CFTs. These parent CFTs are non-unitary and have their left and right central charges become large in magnitude and opposite in sign. We therefore develop, in parallel to the usual machinery for 2d CFT, many of the tools for the analysis of the quantum mechanical GCA. These include the representation theory based on GCA primaries, Ward identities for their correlation functions and a nonrelativistic Kac table. In particular, the null vectors of the GCA lead to differential equations for the four point function. The solution to these equations in the simplest case is explicitly obtained and checked to be consistent with various requirements.
