Graph Structures for Local Distinguishability of Quantum Product States

We consider the problem of distinguishing sets of quantum product states with local operations and classical communication (LOCC). Recent work has used graph theory to identify sets of product states distinguishable with one-way LOCC. We extend these efforts to full two-way LOCC, with the first significant analysis of the set of graphs corresponding to bipartite product states that can be distinguished with two-way protocols after finitely many steps. We derive basic closure properties of the set of distinguishable graphs and identify some classes of graphs that guarantee local distinguishability and some graphs that do not. We also include several examples and forward-looking comments.

Compressed Quantum Operators and Roots of Hermite Polynomials

The fundamental position and momentum operators of quantum mechanics are unbounded, but finite rank compressions of the operators can be considered to obtain partial information on the operators and their properties. Motivated by problems in photonic quantum computing, we bring together results from quantum theory and the theory of orthogonal polynomials to show that a natural finite rank compression of the position and momentum operator representation on Fock space Hilbert space has eigenvalues given by roots of the classical Hermite polynomials. We discuss the corresponding compressed displacement operators and potential applications in approximate quantum error correction.

Quasiorthogonality of Commutative Algebras, Complex Hadamard Matrices, and Mutually Unbiased Measurements

We deepen the theory of quasiorthogonal and approximately quasiorthogonal operator algebras through an analysis of the commutative algebra case. We give a new approach to calculate the measure of orthogonality between two such subalgebras of matrices, based on a matrix-theoretic notion we introduce that has a connection to complex Hadamard matrices. We also show how this new tool can yield significant information on the general non-commutative case. We finish by considering quasiorthogonality for the important subclass of commutative algebras that arise from mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) and mutually unbiased measurements (MUMs) in quantum information theory. We present a number of examples throughout the work, including a subclass that arises from group algebras and Latin squares.

Generalized Knill-Laflamme Theorem for Families of Isoclinic Subspaces

Isoclinic subspaces have been studied for over a century. Quantum error correcting codes were recently shown to define a subclass of families of isoclinic subspaces. The Knill-Laflamme Theorem is a seminal result in the theory of quantum error correction, a central topic in quantum information. We show there is a generalized version of the Knill-Laflamme result and conditions that applies to all families of isoclinic subspaces. In the case of quantum stabilizer codes, the expanded conditions are shown to capture logical operators. We apply the general conditions to give a new perspective on a classical subclass of isoclinic subspaces defined by the graphs of anticommuting unitary operators. We show how the result applies to recently studied mutually unbiased quantum measurements (MUMs), and we give a new construction of such measurements motivated by the approach.

Quantum Maps Between CPTP and HPTP

For an open quantum system to evolve under CPTP maps, assumptions are made on the initial correlations between the system and the environment. Hermitian-preserving trace-preserving (HPTP) maps are considered as the local dynamic maps beyond CPTP. In this paper, we provide a succinct answer to the question of what physical maps are in the HPTP realm by two approaches. The first is by taking one step out of the CPTP set, which provides us with Semi-Positivity (SP) TP maps. The second way is by examining the physicality of HPTP maps, which leads to Semi-Nonnegative (SN) TP maps. Physical interpretations and geometrical structures are studied for these maps. The non-CP SPTP maps $Ψ$ correspond to the quantum non-Markovian process under the CP-divisibility definition ($Ψ= Ξ\circ Φ^{-1}$, where $Ξ$ and $Φ$ are CPTP). When removing the invertibility assumption on $Φ$, we land in the set of SNTP maps. A by-product of set relations is an answer to the following question -- what kind of dynamics the system will go through when the previous dynamic $Φ$ is non-invertible. In this case, the only locally well-defined maps are in $SN\backslash SP$, they live on the boundary of $SN$. Otherwise, the non-local information will be irreplaceable in the system's dynamic. With the understanding of physical maps beyond CPTP, we prove that the current quantum error correction scheme is still sufficient to correct quantum non-Markovian errors. In some special cases, lack of complete positivity could provide us with more error correction methods with less overhead.

Using alternating de Bruijn sequences to construct de Bruijn tori

A de Bruijn torus is the two dimensional generalization of a de Bruijn sequence. While some methods exist to generate these tori, only a few methods of construction are known. We present a novel method to generate de Bruijn tori with rectangular windows by combining two variants de Bruijn sequences called `Alternating de Bruijn sequences' and `De Bruijn families'.

Operator Algebra Generalization of a Theorem of Watrous and Mixed Unitary Quantum Channels

We establish an operator algebra generalization of Watrous' theorem \cite{watrous2009} on mixing unital quantum channels (completely positive trace-preserving maps) with the completely depolarizing channel, wherein the more general objects of focus become (finite-dimensional) von Neumann algebras, the unique trace preserving conditional expectation onto the algebra, the group of unitary operators in the commutant of the algebra, and the fixed point algebra of the channel. As an application, we obtain a result on the asymptotic theory of quantum channels, showing that all unital channels are eventually mixed unitary. We also discuss the special case of the diagonal algebra in detail, and draw connections to the theory of correlation matrices and Schur product maps.

Chordal Graphs and Distinguishability of Quantum Product States

We investigate a graph-theoretic approach to the problem of distinguishing quantum product states in the fundamental quantum communication framework called local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We identify chordality as the key graph structure that drives distinguishability in one-way LOCC, and we derive a one-way LOCC characterization for chordal graphs that establishes a connection with the theory of matrix completions. We also derive minimality conditions on graph parameters that allow for the determination of indistinguishability of states. We present a number of applications and examples built on these results.

Vector Representations of Graphs and Distinguishing Quantum Product States with One-way LOCC

Distinguishing sets of quantum states shared by two parties using only local operations and classical communication measurements is a fundamental topic in quantum communication and quantum information theory. We introduce a graph-theoretic approach, based on the theory of vector representations of graphs, to the core problem of distinguishing product states with one-way LOCC. We establish a number of results that show how distinguishing such states can be framed in terms of properties of the underlying graphs associated with a set of vector product states. We also present a number of illustrative examples.

Orthogonal Unitary Bases and a Subfactor Conjecture

We show that any finite dimensional von Neumann algebra admits an orthonormal unitary basis with respect to its standard trace. We also show that a finite dimensional von Neumann subalgebra of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ admits an orthonormal unitary basis under normalized matrix trace if and only if the normalized matrix trace and standard trace of the von Neumann subalgebra coincide. As an application, we verify a recent conjecture of Bakshi-Gupta, showing that any finite-index regular inclusion $N\subseteq M$ of $II_1$-factors admits an orthonormal unitary Pimsner-Popa basis.

Entanglement Breaking Rank via Complementary Channels and Multiplicative Domains

Quantum entanglement can be studied through the theory of completely positive maps in a number of ways, including by making use of the Choi-Jamilkowski isomorphism, which identifies separable states with entanglement breaking quantum channels, and optimal ensemble length with entanglement breaking rank. The multiplicative domain is an important operator structure in the theory of completely positive maps. We introduce a new technique to determine if a channel is entanglement breaking and to evaluate entanglement breaking rank, based on an analysis of multiplicative domains determined by complementary quantum channels. We give a full description of the class of entanglement breaking channels that have a projection as their Choi matrix, and we show the entanglement breaking and Choi ranks of such channels are equal.

Absolutely $k$-Incoherent Quantum States and Spectral Inequalities for Factor Width of a Matrix

We investigate the set of quantum states that can be shown to be $k$-incoherent based only on their eigenvalues (equivalently, we explore which Hermitian matrices can be shown to have small factor width based only on their eigenvalues). In analogy with the absolute separability problem in quantum resource theory, we call these states "absolutely $k$-incoherent", and we derive several necessary and sufficient conditions for membership in this set. We obtain many of our results by making use of recent results concerning hyperbolicity cones associated with elementary symmetric polynomials.

Birkhoff-James Orthogonality in the Trace Norm, with Applications to Quantum Resource Theories

We develop numerous results that characterize when a complex Hermitian matrix is Birkhoff-James orthogonal, in the trace norm, to a (Hermitian) positive semidefinite matrix or set of positive semidefinite matrices. For example, we develop a simple-to-test criterion that determines which Hermitian matrices are Birkhoff-James orthogonal, in the trace norm, to the set of all positive semidefinite diagonal matrices. We then explore applications of our work in the theory of quantum resources. For example, we characterize exactly which quantum states have modified trace distance of coherence equal to 1 (the maximal possible value), and we establish a connection between the modified trace distance of 2-entanglement and the NPPT bound entanglement problem.

Operator and Graph Theoretic Techniques for Distinguishing Quantum States via One-Way LOCC

We bring together in one place some of the main results and applications from our recent works in quantum information theory, in which we have brought techniques from operator theory, operator algebras, and graph theory for the first time to investigate the topic of distinguishability of sets of quantum states in quantum communication, with particular reference to the framework of one-way local quantum operations and classical communication (LOCC). We also derive a new graph-theoretic description of distinguishability in the case of a single qubit sender.

Entanglement Breaking Channels, Stochastic Matrices, and Primitivity

We consider the important class of quantum operations (completely positive trace-preserving maps) called entanglement breaking channels. We show how every such channel induces stochastic matrix representations that have the same non-zero spectrum as the channel. We then use this to investigate when entanglement breaking channels are primitive, and prove this depends on primitivity of the matrix representations. This in turn leads to tight bounds on the primitivity index of entanglement breaking channels in terms of the primitivity index of the associated stochastic matrices. We also present examples and discuss open problems generated by the work.

The Average Quantum Coherence of Pure State Decomposition

We study the average quantum coherence over the pure state decompositions of a mixed quantum state. An upper bound of the average quantum coherence is provided and sufficient conditions for the saturation of the upper bound are shown. These sufficient conditions always hold for two and three dimensional systems. This provides a tool to estimate the average coherence experimentally by measuring only the diagonal elements, which remarkably requires less measurements compared with state tomography. We then describe the pure state decompositions of qubit state in Bloch sphere geometrically. For any given qubit state, the optimal pure state decomposition achieving the maximal average quantum coherence as well as three other pure state decompositions are shown in the Bloch sphere. The order relations among their average quantum coherence are invariant for any coherence measure. The results presented in this paper are universal and suitable for all coherence measures.

Coherence of assistance and assisted maximally coherent states

Coherence and entanglement are fundamental concepts in resource theory. The coherence (entanglement) of assistance is the coherence (entanglement) that can be extracted assisted by another party with local measurement and classical communication. We introduce and study the general coherence of assistance. First, in terms of real symmetric concave functions on the probability simplex, the coherence of assistance and the entanglement of assistance are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence. We then introduce two classes of quantum states: the assisted maximally coherent states and the assisted maximally entangled states. They can be transformed into maximally coherent or entangled pure states with the help of another party using local measurement and classical communication. We give necessary conditions for states to be assisted maximally coherent or assisted maximally entangled. Based on these, a unified framework between coherence and entanglement including coherence (entanglement) measures, coherence (entanglement) of assistance, coherence (entanglement) resources is proposed. Then we show that the coherence of assistance as well as entanglement of assistance are strictly larger than the coherence of convex roof and entanglement of convex roof for all full rank density matrices. So all full rank quantum states are distillable in the assisted coherence distillation.

One-Way LOCC Indistinguishable Lattice States via Operator Structures

Lattice states are a class of quantum states that naturally generalize the fundamental set of Bell states. We apply recent results from quantum error correction and from one-way local operations and classical communication (LOCC) theory, that are built on the structure theory of operator systems and operator algebras, to develop a technique for the construction of relatively small sets of lattice states not distinguishable by one-way LOCC schemes. We also present examples, show the construction extends to generalized Pauli states, and compare the construction to other recent work.
