Direct verification of the fluctuation-dissipation relation in viscously coupled oscillators

The fluctuation-dissipation relation, a central result in non-equilibrium statistical physics, relates equilibrium fluctuations in a system to its linear response to external forces. Here we provide a direct experimental verification of this relation for viscously coupled oscillators, as realized by a pair of optically trapped colloidal particles. A theoretical analysis, in which interactions mediated by slow viscous flow are represented by non-local friction tensors, matches experimental results and reveals a frequency maximum in the amplitude of the mutual response which is a sensitive function of the trap stiffnesses and the friction tensors. This allows for its location and width to be tuned and suggests the utility of the trap setup for accurate two-point microrheology.

Fast Bayesian inference of optical trap stiffness and particle diffusion

Bayesian inference provides a principled way of estimating the parameters of a stochastic process that is observed discretely in time. The overdamped Brownian motion of a particle confined in an optical trap is generally modelled by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and can be observed directly in experiment. Here we present Bayesian methods for inferring the parameters of this process, the trap stiffness and the particle diffusion coefficient, that use exact likelihoods and sufficient statistics to arrive at simple expressions for the maximum a posteriori estimates. This obviates the need for Monte Carlo sampling and yields methods that are both fast and accurate. We apply these to experimental data and demonstrate their advantage over commonly used non-Bayesian fitting methods.

Universal hydrodynamic mechanisms for crystallization in active colloidal suspensions

The lack of detailed balance in active colloidal suspensions allows dissipation to determine stationary states. Here we show that slow viscous flow produced by polar or apolar active colloids near plane walls mediates attractive hydrodynamic forces that drive crystallization. Hydrodynamically mediated torques tend to destabilize the crystal but stability can be regained through critical amounts of bottom-heaviness or chiral activity. Numerical simulations show that crystallization is not nucleational, as in equilibrium, but is preceded by a spinodal-like instability. Harmonic excitations of the active crystal relax diffusively but the normal modes are distinct from an equilibrium colloidal crystal. The hydrodynamic mechanisms presented here are universal and rationalize recent experiments on the crystallization of active colloids.

Many-body microhydrodynamics of colloidal particles with active boundary layers

Colloidal particles with active boundary layers - regions surrounding the particles where nonequilibrium processes produce large velocity gradients - are common in many physical, chemical and biological contexts. The velocity or stress at the edge of the boundary layer determines the exterior fluid flow and, hence, the many-body interparticle hydrodynamic interaction. Here, we present a method to compute the many-body hydrodynamic interaction between $N$ spherical active particles induced by their exterior microhydrodynamic flow. First, we use a boundary integral representation of the Stokes equation to eliminate bulk fluid degrees of freedom. Then, we expand the boundary velocities and tractions of the integral representation in an infinite-dimensional basis of tensorial spherical harmonics and, on enforcing boundary conditions in a weak sense on the surface of each particle, obtain a system of linear algebraic equations for the unknown expansion coefficients. The truncation of the infinite series, fixed by the degree of accuracy required, yields a finite linear system that can be solved accurately and efficiently by iterative methods. The solution linearly relates the unknown rigid body motion to the known values of the expansion coefficients, motivating the introduction of propulsion matrices. These matrices completely characterize hydrodynamic interactions in active suspensions just as mobility matrices completely characterize hydrodynamic interactions in passive suspensions. The reduction in the dimensionality of the problem, from a three-dimensional partial differential equation to a two-dimensional integral equation, allows for dynamic simulations of hundreds of thousands of active particles on multi-core computational architectures.

Generalized estimators using characteristics of Poisson distribution

In this article, we have proposed a generalized class of estimators, exponential class of estimators based on adaption of Sharma and Singh (2015) and Solanki and Singh (2013) and simple difference estimator for estimating unknown population mean in case of Poisson distributed population in simple random sampling without replacement. The expressions for mean square errors of the proposed classes of estimators are derived to the first order of approximation. It is shown that the adapted version of Solanki and Singh (2013), exponential class of estimator, is always more efficient than usual estimator, ratio, product, exponential ratio and exponential product type estimators and equal efficient to simple difference estimator. Moreover, the adapted version of Sharma and Singh (2015) estimator are always more efficient than all the estimators available in literature. In addition, theoretical findings are supported by an empirical study to show the superiority of the constructed estimators over others with earthquake data of Turkey.

Estimation of mean using dual-to-ratio and difference-type estimators under measurement error model

In sample survey, when data is collected, it is assumed that whatever is reported by respondent is correct. However, given the issues of prestige bias, personal respect, respondents self reported data often produces over-or-under estimated values from true value. This causes measurement error to be present in sample values. In support of this study, we have considered some precise classes using dual under measurement error model. The expressions for the bias and the mean square errors of proposed classes have been derived and compared with, the mean per unit estimator, the Srivenkataramana 1980 estimator and Sharma and Tailor 2010 estimator.

Multivariate dual to ratio type estimators using arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means in simple random sampling

Auxiliary variable is extensively used in survey sampling to improve the precision of estimates. Whenever there is availability of auxiliary information, we want to utilize it in the method of estimation to obtain the most efficient estimator. In this paper using multi-auxiliary information we have proposed estimators based on arithmetic, geometric and harmonic mean. It was also shown that estimator based on harmonic and geometric means are more biased than estimator based on arithmetic mean under certain conditions. However, the MSE of all three estimators are same up to the first order of approximation.

Generalized class of estimators for finite population mean when study variable is qualitative in nature

This paper suggests a generalized class of estimators for population mean of the qualitative study variable in simple random sampling using information on an auxiliary variable. Asymptotic expressions of bias and mean square error of the proposed class of estimators have been obtained. Asymptotic optimum estimator has been investigated along with its approximate mean square error. It has been shown that proposed generalized class of estimators are more efficient than all the estimators considered by Singh et al. (2010) in case of qualitative study variable. In addition theoretical findings are supported by an empirical study based on real population to show the superiority of the constructed estimators over others.

Method of estimation in the presence of non-response and measurement errors simultaneously

The present paper discusses the problem of estimating the finite population mean of study variable in simple random sampling in the presence of non response and response error together. The estimators in this article use auxiliary information to improve efficiency and we suppose that non response and measurement error are present in both the study and auxiliary variables. A class of estimators has been proposed and its properties are studied in the simultaneous presence of non-response and response errors. It has been shown that proposed class of estimators is more efficient than the usual unbiased estimator, ratio and product estimators under non-response and response error together. In addition, a numerical study is carried out to compare the performance of the proposed class of estimators over others.
