Betti Functionals as a Probe for Cosmic Topology

The question of the global topology of the Universe (cosmic topology) is still open. In the $Λ$CDM concordance model it is assumed that the space of the Universe possesses the trivial topology of $\mathbb{R}^3$ and thus that the Universe has an infinite volume. As an alternative, we study in this paper one of the simplest non-trivial topologies given by a cubic 3-torus describing a universe with a finite volume. To probe cosmic topology, we analyse certain structure properties in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using Betti Functionals and the Euler Characteristic evaluated on excursions sets, which possess a simple geometrical interpretation. Since the CMB temperature fluctuations $δT$ are observed on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ surrounding the observer, there are only three Betti functionals $β_k(ν)$, $k=1,2,3$. Here $ν=δT/σ_0$ denotes the temperature threshold normalized by the standard deviation $σ_0$ of $δT$. Analytic approximations of the Gaussian expectations for the Betti functionals and an exact formula for the Euler characteristic are given. It is shown that the amplitudes of $β_0(ν)$ and $β_1(ν)$ decrease with increasing volume $V=L^3$ of the cubic 3-torus universe. Since the computation of the $β_k$'s from observational sky maps is hindered due to the presence of masks, we suggest a method yielding lower and upper bounds for them and apply it to four Planck 2018 sky maps. It is found that the $β_k$'s of the Planck maps lie between those of the torus universes with side-lengths $L=2.0$ and $L=3.0$ in units of the Hubble length and above the infinite $Λ$CDM case. These results give a further hint that the Universe has a non-trivial topology.

The variance of the CMB temperature gradient: a new signature of a multiply connected Universe

In this work we investigate the standard deviation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature gradient field as a signature for a multiply connected nature of the Universe. CMB simulations of a spatially infinite universe model within the paradigm of the standard cosmological model present non-zero two-point correlations at any angular scale. This is in contradiction with the extreme suppression of correlations at scales above $60^{\circ}$ in the observed CMB maps. Universe models with spatially multiply connected topology contain typically a discrete spectrum of the Laplacian with a specific wave-length cut-off and thus lead to a suppression of the correlations at large angular scales, as observed in the CMB (in general there can be also an additional continuous spectrum). Among the simplest examples are 3-dimensional tori which possess only a discrete spectrum. To date, the universe models with non-trivial topology such as the toroidal space are the only models that possess a two-point correlation function showing a similar behaviour as the one derived from the observed Planck CMB maps. In this work it is shown that the normalized standard deviation of the CMB temperature gradient field does hierarchically detect the change in size of the cubic 3-torus, if the volume of the Universe is smaller than $\simeq 2.5 \cdot 10^3$ Gpc$^3$. It is also shown that the variance of the temperature gradient of the Planck maps is consistent with the median value of simulations within the standard cosmological model. All flat tori are globally homogeneous, but are globally anisotropic. However, this study also presents a test showing a level of homogeneity and isotropy of all the CMB map ensembles for the different torus sizes considered that are nearly at the same weak level of anisotropy revealed by the CMB in the standard cosmological model.

Determining our peculiar velocity from the aberration in the cosmic microwave background

The motion of our solar system relative to the CMB rest frame leads to subtle distortions in the observed CMB sky map due to the aberration effect. Usually the corresponding peculiar velocity is determined from the CMB dipole but neglecting intrinsic dipole contributions. Here it is investigated whether certain invariant scalar measures, which are derived from first and second order covariant derivatives on the sphere, can detect the distortions caused by the aberration effect at high multipoles. This would in principle allow to disentangle the Doppler from intrinsic dipole contributions providing an independent method for the determination of our peculiar velocity. It is found that the eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix of the temperature field are well suited for that task.

On the concordance of cosmological data in the case of the generalized Chaplygin gas

The generalized Chaplygin gas cosmology provides a prime example for the class of unified dark matter models, which substitute the two dark components of the standard cosmological LCDM concordance model by a single dark component. The equation of state of the generalized Chaplygin gas is characterised by a parameter alpha such that the standard LCDM model is recovered in the case alpha=0 with respect to the background dynamics and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) statistics. This allows to investigate the concordance of different cosmological data sets with respect to alpha. We compare the supernova data of the Supernova Cosmology Project, the data of the baryon oscillation spectroscopic survey (BOSS) of the third Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS-III) and the CMB data of the Planck 2015 data release. The importance of the BOSS Lyman alpha forest BAO measurements is investigated. It is found that these data sets possess a common overlap of the confidence domains only for Chaplygin gas cosmologies very close to the LCDM model.

Early-Matter-Like Dark Energy and the Cosmic Microwave Background

Early-matter-like dark energy is defined as a dark energy component whose equation of state approaches that of cold dark matter (CDM) at early times. Such a component is an ingredient of unified dark matter (UDM) models, which unify the cold dark matter and the cosmological constant of the LambdaCDM concordance model into a single dark fluid. Power series expansions in conformal time of the perturbations of the various components for a model with early-matter-like dark energy are provided. They allow the calculation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy from the primordial initial values of the perturbations. For a phenomenological UDM model, which agrees with the observations of the local Universe, the CMB anisotropy is computed and compared with the CMB data. It is found that a match to the CMB observations is possible if the so-called effective velocity of sound c_eff of the early-matter-like dark energy component is very close to zero. The modifications on the CMB temperature and polarization power spectra caused by varying the effective velocity of sound are studied.

The Hantzsche-Wendt Manifold in Cosmic Topology

The Hantzsche-Wendt space is one of the 17 multiply connected spaces of the three-dimensional Euclidean space E^3. It is a compact and orientable manifold which can serve as a model for a spatial finite universe. Since it possesses much fewer matched back-to-back circle pairs on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky than the other compact flat spaces, it can escape the detection by a search for matched circle pairs. The suppression of temperature correlations C(theta) on large angular scales on the CMB sky is studied. It is shown that the large-scale correlations are of the same order as for the 3-torus topology but express a much larger variability. The Hantzsche-Wendt manifold provides a topological possibility with reduced large-angle correlations that can hide from searches for matched back-to-back circle pairs.

A search for cosmic topology in the final WMAP data

A search for matched circle pairs of similar temperature fluctuations in the final WMAP 9yr data is carried out. Such a signature is expected if the space of the Universe is multiply connected. We investigate the relation between the pixel resolution of cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps and a Gaussian smoothing in order to lower the probability for missing matched circle pairs. CMB maps having the 3-torus topology are generated with the characteristics of the WMAP satellite in order to determine how large the smoothing should be chosen in CMB maps disturbed by detector noise. The V- and W-band data are analysed with respect to matched circle pairs and a tentatively signal is found for a circle pair, which lies, however, close to the plane of the Galaxy. It is, however, inconclusive whether this signal is generated by chance, is due to residual foregrounds contained in the V- and W-band maps, or is due to a genuine topology.

Cosmic Topology of Polyhedral Double-Action Manifolds

A special class of non-trivial topologies of the spherical space S^3 is investigated with respect to their cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. The observed correlations of the anisotropies on the CMB sky possess on large separation angles surprising low amplitudes which might be naturally be explained by models of the Universe having a multiconnected spatial space. We analysed in CQG 29(2012)215005 the CMB properties of prism double-action manifolds that are generated by a binary dihedral group D^*_p and a cyclic group Z_n up to a group order of 180. Here we extend the CMB analysis to polyhedral double-action manifolds which are generated by the three binary polyhedral groups (T^*, O^*, I^*) and a cyclic group Z_n up to a group order of 1000. There are 20 such polyhedral double-action manifolds. Some of them turn out to have even lower CMB correlations on large angles than the Poincare dodecahedron.

Cosmic Topology of Prism Double-Action Manifolds

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in spherical 3-spaces with a non-trivial topology are studied. This paper discusses the special class of the so-called double-action manifolds, which are for the first time analysed with respect to their CMB anisotropies. The CMB anisotropies are computed for all prism double-action manifolds generated by a binary dihedral and a cyclic group with a group order of up to 180 leading to 33 different topologies. Several spaces are found which show a suppression of the CMB anisotropies on large angular distances as it is found on the real CMB sky. It turns out that two of these spaces possess Dirichlet domains which are not very far from highly symmetric polyhedra like Platonic or Archimedean ones.

A survey of lens spaces and large-scale CMB anisotropy

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy possesses the remarkable property that its power is strongly suppressed on large angular scales. This observational fact can naturally be explained by cosmological models with a non-trivial topology. The paper focuses on lens spaces L(p,q) which are realised by a tessellation of the spherical 3-space S^3 by cyclic deck groups of order p<=72. The investigated cosmological parameter space covers the interval Omega_tot \in [1.001,1.05]. Several spaces are found which have CMB correlations on angular scales theta >= 60^\circ suppressed by a factor of two compared to the simply connected S^3 space. The analysis is based on the S statistics, and a comparison to the WMAP 7yr data is carried out. Although the CMB suppression is less pronounced than in the Poincare dodecahedral space, these lens spaces provide an alternative worth for follow-up studies.

Ellipticity of Structures in CMB Sky Maps

We study the ellipticity of contour lines in the sky maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as well as other measures of elongation. The sensitivity of the elongation on the resolution of the CMB maps which depends on the pixelization and the beam profile of the detector, is investigated. It is shown that the current experimental accuracy does not allow to discriminate between cosmological models which differ in curvature by Delta Omega_tot=0.05. Analytical expressions are given for the case that the statistical properties of the CMB are those of two-dimensional Gaussian random fields.

A spatial correlation analysis for a toroidal universe

The spatial cross-correlation function xi_C recently introduced by Roukema et al. is applied to the equilateral toroidal topology of the universe. Several CMB maps based on the WMAP 5yr data are analysed and a small likelihood in favour of a torus cell is revealed. The results are compared to ten LCDM simulations which point to a high false positive rate of the spatial-correlation-function method such that a firm conclusion cannot be drawn.

Do we Live in a "Small Universe"?

We compute the effects of a compact flat universe on the angular correlation function, the angular power spectrum, the circles-in-the-sky signature, and the covariance matrix of the spherical harmonics coefficients of the cosmic microwave background radiation using the full Boltzmann physics. Our analysis shows that the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) three-year data are well compatible with the possibility that we live in a flat 3-torus with volume ~5x10^3 Gpc^3.

Hyperbolic Universes with a Horned Topology and the CMB Anisotropy

We analyse the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in hyperbolic universes possessing a non-trivial topology with a fundamental cell having an infinitely long horn. The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we show that the horned topology does not lead to a flat spot in the CMB sky maps in the direction of the horn as stated in the literature. On the other hand, we demonstrate that a horned topology having a finite volume could explain the suppression of the lower multipoles in the CMB anisotropy as observed by COBE and WMAP.

The Fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background for a Compact Hyperbolic Universe

The fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are investigated for a small open universe, i.e., one which is periodically composed of a small fundamental cell. The evolution of initial metric perturbations is computed using the first 749 eigenmodes of the fundamental cell in the framework of linear perturbation theory using a mixture of radiation and matter. The fluctuations of the CMB are investigated for various density parameters Omega_0 taking into account the full Sachs-Wolfe effect. The corresponding angular power spectrum C_l is compared with recent experiments.
