Dissipative Exciton Transfer in Donor-Bridge-Acceptor Systems: Numerical Renormalization Group Calculation of Equilibrium Properties

We present a detailed model study of exciton transfer processes in donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) systems. Using a model which includes the intermolecular Coulomb interaction and the coupling to a dissipative environment we calculate the phase diagram, the absorption spectrum as well as dynamic equilibrium properties with the numerical renormalization group. This method is non-perturbative and therefore allows to cover the full parameter space, especially the case when the intermolecular Coulomb interaction is of the same order as the coupling to the environment and perturbation theory cannot be applied. For DBA systems up to six sites we found a transition to the localized phase (self-trapping) depending on the coupling to the dissipative environment. We discuss various criteria which favour delocalized exciton transfer.

Numerical Renormalization Group for Impurity Quantum Phase Transitions: Structure of Critical Fixed Points

The numerical renormalization group method is used to investigate zero temperature phase transitions in quantum impurity systems, in particular in the particle-hole symmetric soft-gap Anderson model. The model displays two stable phases whose fixed points can be built up of non-interacting single-particle states. In contrast, the quantum phase transitions turn out to be described by interacting fixed points, and their excitations cannot be described in terms of free particles. We show that the structure of the many-body spectrum of these critical fixed points can be understood using renormalized perturbation theory close to certain values of the bath exponents which play the role of critical dimensions. Contact is made with perturbative renormalization group calculations for the soft-gap Anderson and Kondo models. A complete description of the quantum critical many-particle spectra is achieved using suitable marginal operators; technically this can be understood as epsilon-expansion for full many-body spectra.

Hund's coupling and the metal-insulator transition in the two-band Hubbard model

The Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition is investigated in a two-band Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory. To this end, we use a suitable extension of Wilson's numerical renormalization group for the solution of the effective two-band single-impurity Anderson model. This method is non-perturbative and, in particular, allows to take into account the full exchange part of the Hund's rule coupling between the two orbitals. We discuss in detail the influence of the various Coulomb interactions on thermodynamic and dynamic properties, for both the impurity and the lattice model. The exchange part of the Hund's rule coupling turns out to play an important role for the physics of the two-band Hubbard model and for the nature of the Mott-transition.

Electron Transfer in Donor-Acceptor Systems: Many-Particle Effects and Influence of Electronic Correlations

We investigate electron transfer processes in donor-acceptor systems with a coupling of the electronic degrees of freedom to a common bosonic bath. The model allows to study many-particle effects and the influence of the local Coulomb interaction U between electrons on donor and acceptor sites. Using the non-perturbative numerical renormalization group approach we find distinct differences between the electron transfer characteristics in the single- and two-particle subspaces. We calculate the critical electron-boson coupling alpha_c as a function of $U$ and show results for density-density correlation functions in the whole parameter space. The possibility of many-particle (bipolaronic) and Coulomb-assisted transfer is discussed.

Dynamical Mean-Field Theory - from Quantum Impurity Physics to Lattice Problems

Since the first investigation of the Hubbard model in the limit of infinite dimensions by Metzner and Vollhardt, dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) has become a very powerful tool for the investigation of lattice models of correlated electrons. In DMFT the lattice model is mapped on an effective quantum impurity model in a bath which has to be determined self-consistently. This approach lead to a significant progress in our understanding of typical correlation problems such as the Mott transition; furthermore, the combination of DMFT with ab-initio methods now allows for a realistic treatment of correlated materials. The focus of these lecture notes is on the relation between quantum impurity physics and the physics of lattice models within DMFT. Issues such as the observability of impurity quantum phase transitions in the corresponding lattice models are discussed in detail.

Numerical Renormalization Group for Quantum Impurities in a Bosonic Bath

We present a detailed description of the recently proposed numerical renormalization group method for models of quantum impurities coupled to a bosonic bath. Specifically, the method is applied to the spin-boson model, both in the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic cases. We present various results for static as well as dynamic quantities and discuss details of the numerical implementation, e.g., the discretization of a bosonic bath with arbitrary continuous spectral density, the suitable choice of a finite basis in the bosonic Hilbert space, and questions of convergence w.r.t. truncation parameters. The method is shown to provide high-accuracy data over the whole range of model parameters and temperatures, which are in agreement with exact results and other numerical data from the literature.

Charge ordering and phase separation in the infinite dimensional extended Hubbard model

We study the extended Hubbard model with both on-site (U) and nearest neighbor (V) Coulomb repulsion using the exact diagonalization method within the dynamical mean field theory. For a fixed U (U=2.0), the T-n phase-diagrams are obtained for V=1.4 and V=1.2, at which the ground states of n=1/2 system is charge-ordered and charge-disordered, respectively. In both cases, robust charge order is found at finite temperature and in an extended filling regime around n=1/2. The order parameter changes non-monotonously with temperature. For V=1.4, phase separation between charge-ordered and charge-disordered phases is observed in the low temperature and n < 0.5 regime. It is described by an "S"-shaped structure of the n-/mu curve. For V=1.2, the ground state is charge-disordered, and a reentrant charge-ordering transition is observed for 0.42 < n < 0.68. Relevance of our results to experiments for doped manganites is discussed.

Numerical Renormalization Group for Bosonic Systems and Application to the Subohmic Spin-Boson Model

We describe the generalization of Wilson's Numerical Renormalization Group method to quantum impurity models with a bosonic bath, providing a general non-perturbative approach to bosonic impurity models which can access exponentially small energies and temperatures. As an application, we consider the spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with power-law spectral density, J(omega) ~ omega^s. We find clear evidence for a line of continuous quantum phase transitions for subohmic bath exponents 0<s<1; the line terminates in the well-known Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at s=1. Contact is made with results from perturbative renormalization group, and various other applications are outlined.

Kondo screening in d-wave superconductors in a Zeeman field and implications for STM spectra of Zn-doped cuprates

We consider the screening of an impurity moment in a d-wave superconductor under the influence of a Zeeman magnetic field. Using the Numerical Renormalization Group technique, we investigate the resulting pseudogap Kondo problem, in particular the field-induced crossover behavior in the vicinity of the zero-field boundary quantum phase transition. The impurity spectral function and the resulting changes in the local host density of states are calculated, giving specific predictions for high-field STM measurements on impurity-doped cuprates.

A fractional-spin phase in the power-law Kondo model

We consider a Kondo impurity coupled to a fermionic host with a power-law density of states near the Fermi level, rho(epsilon) ~ |epsilon|^r, with exponent r<0. Using both perturbative renormalization group (poor man's scaling) and numerical renormalization group methods, we analyze the phase diagram of this model for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling. Both sectors display non-trivial behavior with several stable phases separated by second-order transitions. In particular, on the ferromagnetic side there is a stable intermediate-coupling fixed point with universal properties corresponding to a fractional ground-state spin.

Phenomenological Modeling of Photoemission Spectra in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

A phenomenological approach is presented that allows one to model, and thereby interpret, photoemission spectra of strongly correlated electron systems. A simple analytical formula for the self-energy is proposed. This self-energy describes both coherent and incoherent parts of the spectrum (quasiparticle and Hubbard peaks, respectively). Free parameters in the expression are determined by fitting the density of states to experimental photoemission data. An explicit fitting is presented for the La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ system with $0.08 \le x \le 0.38$. In general, our phenomenological approach provides information on the effective mass, the Hubbard interaction, and the spectral weight distribution in different parts of the spectrum. Limitations of this approach are also discussed.

Quantum phase transitions in models of coupled magnetic impurities

We discuss models of interacting magnetic impurities coupled to a metallic host. If twice the sum of the impurity spins is larger than the total number of host screening channels, the system shows one or more quantum phase transitions where the ground-state spin changes as a function of the inter-impurity couplings. The simplest example is realized by two spin-1/2 Kondo impurities coupled to a single orbital of the host; this model exhibits a singlet-doublet transition. We investigate the phase diagram and crossover behavior of this model and present Numerical Renormalization Group results together with general arguments showing that the quantum phase transition is either of first order or of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type, depending on the symmetry of the Kondo couplings. Connections to other models and possible applications are discussed.

Kondo effect of impurity moments in d-wave superconductors: Quantum phase transition and spectral properties

We discuss the dynamics of magnetic moments in d-wave superconductors, in particular we focus on moments induced by doping non-magnetic impurities into cuprates. The interaction of such moments with the Bogoliubov quasiparticles of the superconductors can be decribed by variants of the pseudogap Kondo model, characterized by a power-law density of states at the Fermi level. The Numerical Renormalization Group technique is employed to investigate this Kondo problem for realistic band structures and particle-hole asymmetries, both at zero and finite temperatures. In particular, we study the boundary quantum phase transition between the local-moment and the asymmetric strong-coupling phases, and argue that this transition has been observed in recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. We determine the spectral properties of both phases, the location of the critical point as function of Kondo coupling and doping, and discuss the quantum-critical cross-overs near this phase transition. In addition, the changes in the local density of states around the impurity are calculated as function of temperature, being relevant to scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.

Anderson impurities in gapless hosts: comparison of renormalization group and local moment approaches

The symmetric Anderson impurity model, with a soft-gap hybridization vanishing at the Fermi level with power law r > 0, is studied via the numerical renormalization group (NRG). Detailed comparison is made with predictions arising from the local moment approach (LMA), a recently developed many-body theory which is found to provide a remarkably successful description of the problem. Results for the `normal' (r = 0) impurity model are obtained as a specific case. Particular emphasis is given both to single-particle excitation dynamics, and to the transition between the strong coupling (SC) and local moment (LM) phases of the model. Scaling characteristics and asymptotic behaviour of the SC/LM phase boundaries are considered. Single-particle spectra are investigated in some detail, for the SC phase in particular. Here, the modified spectral functions are found to contain a generalized Kondo resonance that is ubiquitously pinned at the Fermi level; and which exhibits a characteristic low-energy Kondo scale that narrows progressively upon approach to the SC->LM transition, where it vanishes. Universal scaling of the spectra as the transition is approached thus results. The scaling spectrum characteristic of the normal Anderson model is recovered as a particular case, and is captured quantitatively by the LMA. In all cases the r-dependent scaling spectra are found to possess characteristic low-energy asymptotics, but to be dominated by generalized Doniach-Sunjic tails, in agreement with LMA predictions.
