Can a tensorial analogue of gravitational force explain away the galactic rotation curves without dark matter?

The dark matter problem is one of the most pressing problems in modern physics. As there is no well-established claim from a direct detection experiment supporting the existence of the illusive dark matter that has been postulated to explain the flat rotation curves of galaxies, and since the whole issue of an alternative theory of gravity remains controversial, it may be worth to reconsider the familiar ground of general relativity (GR) itself for a possible way out. It has recently been discovered that a skew-symmetric rank-three tensor field - the Lanczos tensor field - that generates the Weyl tensor differentially, provides a proper relativistic analogue of the Newtonian gravitational force. By taking account of its conformal invariance, the Lanczos tensor leads to a modified acceleration law which can explain, within the framework of GR itself, the flat rotation curves of galaxies without the need for any dark matter whatsoever.

Lanczos potential of Weyl field: interpretations and applications

An attempt is made to uncover the physical meaning and significance of the obscure Lanczos tensor field which is regarded as a potential of the Weyl field. Despite being a fundamental building block of any metric theory of gravity, the Lanczos tensor has not been paid proper attention as it deserves. By providing an elucidation on this tensor field through its derivation in some particularly chosen spacetimes, we try to find its adequate interpretation. Though the Lanczos field is traditionally introduced as a gravitational analogue of the electromagnetic 4-potential field, the performed study unearths its another feature - a relativistic analogue of the Newtonian gravitational force field. A new domain of applicability of the Lanczos tensor is introduced which corroborates this new feature of the tensor.

Resolving Hubble tension with the Milne model

The recent measurements of the Hubble constant based on the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology reveal an underlying disagreement between the early-Universe estimates and the late-time measurements. Moreover, as these measurements improve, the discrepancy not only persists but becomes even more significant and harder to ignore. The present situation places the standard cosmology in jeopardy and provides a tantalizing hint that the problem results from some new physics beyond the $Λ$CDM model. It is shown that a non-conventional theory - the Milne model - which introduces a different evolution dynamics for the Universe, alleviates the Hubble tension significantly. Moreover, the model also averts some long-standing problems of the standard cosmology, for instance, the problems related with the cosmological constant, the horizon, the flatness, the Big Bang singularity, the age of the Universe and the non-conservation of energy.

Relativistic potential of Weyl: a gateway to quantum physics in the presence of gravitation?

The well-noted correspondence between gravitation and electrodynamics emphasizes the importance of the Lanczos tensor -- the potential of the Weyl tensor -- which is an inherent structural element of any metric theory of gravity formulated in a 4-dimensional pseudo Riemannian spacetime. However, this ingenious discovery has gone largely unnoticed. We elucidate this important quantity by deriving its expressions in some particularly chosen spacetimes and try to find out what it represents actually. We find out that the Lanczos potential tensor does not represent the potential of the gravitational field, as is ascertained by various evidences. Rather, it is enriched with various signatures of quantum character, which provides a novel insight into the heart of a geometric embodiment of gravity.

A New Weyl-like Tensor of Geometric Origin

A set of new tensors of purely geometric origin have been investigated, which form a hierarchy. A tensor of a lower rank plays the role of the potential for the tensor of one rank higher. The tensors have interesting mathematical and physical properties. The highest rank-tensor of the hierarchy, possesses all the geometrical properties of the Weyl tensor.

Einstein's Theory of Gravity in the Presence of Pressure: A Review

The mysterious `dark energy' needed to explain the current observations, poses a serious confrontation between fundamental physics and cosmology. The present crisis may be an outcome of the (so far untested) prediction of the general theory of relativity that the pressure of the matter source also gravitates. In this view, a theoretical analysis reveals some surprising inconsistencies and paradoxes faced by the energy-stress tensor (in the presence of pressure) which is used to model the matter content of the universe, including dark energy.

Einstein and Beyond: A Critical Perspective on General Relativity

An alternative approach to Einstein's theory of General Relativity (GR) is reviewed, which is motivated by a range of serious theoretical issues inflicting the theory, such as the cosmological constant problem, presence of non-Machian solutions, problems related with the energy-stress tensor $T^{ik}$ and unphysical solutions. The new approach emanates from a critical analysis of these problems, providing a novel insight that the matter fields, together with the ensuing gravitational field, are already present inherently in the spacetime without taking recourse to $T^{ik}$. Supported by numerous evidences, the new insight revolutionizes our views on the representation of the source of gravitation and establishes the spacetime itself as the source, which becomes crucial for understanding the unresolved issues in a unified manner. This leads to a new paradigm in GR by establishing equation $R^{ik}=0$ as the field equation of gravitation plus inertia in the very presence of matter.

A Machian Approach to General Relativity

Mach's principle is surely one of those tantalizingly beautiful concepts in physics which remain elusive. Though General Relativity (GR) was conceived in the spirit of realizing it, the theory failed to fulfill this expectation. Here a study on the implications of imposing Mach's principle on GR with an insight that spacetime has no independent existence without a material background, is presented. This inclusion of the principle in GR turns out to be unexpectedly rewarding. The resulting theory solves many mysteries and averts lingering problems of the conventional forms of GR and cosmology.

A New Solution of Einstein Vacuum Field Equations

A new solution of Einstein's vacuum field equations is discovered which appears as a generalization of the well-known Ozsvath-Schucking solution and explains its source of curvature which has otherwise remained hidden. Curiously, the new solution has a vanishing Kretschmann scalar and is singularity-free despite being curved. The discovery of the new solution is facilitated by a new insight which reveals that it is always possible to define the source of curvature in a vacuum solution in terms of some dimensional parameters. As the parameters vanish, so does the curvature. The new insight also helps to make the vacuum solutions Machian.

Mysteries of the Geometrization of Gravitation

As we now know, there are indeed at least two major difficulties with General Relativity (GR). The first one is related with its incompatibility with quantum mechanics, in the absence of a widely accepted consistent theory that combines the two theories. The second problem is related with the requirement of the dark sectors - inflaton, dark matter and dark energy by the energy-stress tensor, which are needed to explain a variety of astronomical and cosmological observations. While, these dark sectors themselves do not have any non-gravitational or laboratory evidence, the dark energy poses, in addition, a serious confrontation between fundamental physics and cosmology. Guided by the theoretical and the observational evidences, we are led to a slight modification in the notion of the existence of the source of gravitation and its manifestation in GR, which is in striking agreement with not only the theory, but also the observations without requiring the dark sectors of the standard approach. Additionally, it provides natural explanations to some unexplained puzzles.

A Curious Explanation of Some Cosmological Phenomena

While observational cosmology has shown tremendous growth over the last decade, deep mysteries continue to haunt our theoretical understanding of the ingredients of the concordance cosmological model, which are mainly `dark'. More than 95 percent of the content of the energy-stress tensor has to be in the form of inflaton, dark matter and dark energy, which do not have any non-gravitational or laboratory evidence and remain unidentified. Moreover, the dark energy poses a serious confrontation between fundamental physics and cosmology. This makes a strong case to discover alternative theories which do not require the dark sectors of the standard approach to explain the observations. In the present situation, it would be important to gain insight about the requirements of the `would be' final theory from all possible means. In this context, the present paper highlights some, hitherto unnoticed, interesting coincidences which may prove useful to develop insight about the `holy grail' of gravitation. It appears that the requirement of the speculative dark sectors by the energy-stress tensor, is indicative of a possible way out of the present crisis appearing in the standard cosmology, in terms of a theory wherein the energy-stress tensor does not play a direct role in the dynamics. It is shown that various cosmological observations can be explained satisfactorily in the framework of one such theory $-$ the Milne model, without requiring the dark sectors of the standard approach. Moreover, the model evades the horizon, flatness and the cosmological constant problems afflicting the standard cosmology. Though Milne's theory is an incomplete, phenomenological theory, and cannot be the final theory of gravitation, nevertheless, it would be worthwhile to study these coincidences, which may help us develop insight about the would-be final theory.

Gravity of R^{ik}=0: A New Paradigm in GR

Theory of general relativity (GR) has been scrutinized by experts for almost a century and describes accurately all gravitational phenomena ranging from the solar system to the universe. However, this success is achieved provided one admits three completely independent new components in the energy-stress tensor $T^{μν}$$-$inflaton, dark matter and dark energy, which though do not have any non-gravitational or laboratory evidence and have remained generally speculative. Moreover, the dark energy poses a serious confrontation between fundamental physics and cosmology. The present situation reminds us of Einstein's `biggest blunder' when he forced his theory to predict a static universe, perhaps guided by his religious conviction that the universe must be eternal and unchanging. It seems that we are making a similar blunder by forcing $T^{μν}$ into the field equations while the observations indicate that it is not needed. We seem to have a deep-rooted conviction that the spacetime will remain empty unless we fill it by the energy-stress tensor. However, we have been ignoring numerous evidences earnestly indicating otherwise. From a critical analysis of the present situation, we develop an entirely new insight about the source of curvature in equations $R^{μν}=0$ which, though may appear orthogonal to the usual understanding, is in striking agreement with all known phenomena in GR. Moreover, it answers some hitherto unexplained puzzles and circumvents some long-standing problems of the standard paradigm.

On the Relativistic Formulation of Matter

A critical analysis of the relativistic formulation of matter reveals some surprising inconsistencies and paradoxes. Corrections are discovered which lead to the long-sought-after equality of the gravitational and inertial masses, which are otherwise different in general relativity. Realizing the potentially great impact of the discovered corrections, an overview of the situation is provided resulting from the newly discovered crisis, amid the evidences defending the theory.

A Critique of Supernova Data Analysis in Cosmology

Observational astronomy has shown significant growth over the last decade and has made important contributions to cosmology. A major paradigm shift in cosmology was brought about by observations of Type Ia supernovae. The notion that the universe is accelerating has led to several theoretical challenges. Unfortunately, although high quality supernovae data-sets are being produced, their statistical analysis leaves much to be desired. Instead of using the data to directly test the model, several studies seem to concentrate on assuming the model to be correct and limiting themselves to estimating model parameters and internal errors. As shown here, the important purpose of testing a cosmological theory is thereby vitiated.

Do recent supernovae Ia observations tend to rule out all the cosmologies?

Dark energy and the accelerated expansion of the universe have been the direct predictions of the distant supernovae Ia observations which are also supported, indirectly, by the observations of the CMB anisotropies, gravitational lensing and the studies of galaxy clusters. Today these results are accommodated in what has become the `concordance cosmology': a universe with flat spatial sections t=constant with about 70% of its energy in the form of Einstein's cosmological constant Λ. However, we find that as more and more supernovae Ia are observed, more accurately and towards higher redshift, the probability that the data are well explained by the cosmological models decreases alarmingly, finally ruling out the concordance model at more than 95% confidence level. This raises doubts against the `standard candle'-hypothesis of the supernovae Ia and their use to constrain the cosmological models. We need a better understanding of the entire SN Ia phenomenon in order to have cosmological consequences from them.
