On lexicographic representatives in braid monoids

The language of maximal lexicographic representatives of elements in the positive braid monoid $A_n$ with $n$ generators is a regular language. We describe with great detail the smallest Finite State Automaton accepting such language, and study the proportion of elements of length $k$ whose maximal lexicographic representative finishes with the first generator. This proportion tends to some number $P_{n,1}$, as $k$ tends to infinity, and we show that $P_{n,1}\geq \frac{1}{8}$ for every $n\geq 1$. We also provide an explicit formula, based on the Fibonacci numbers, for the number of states of the automaton.

On the growth of Artin--Tits monoids and the partial theta function

We present a new procedure to determine the growth function of a homogeneous Garside monoid, with respect to the finite generating set formed by the atoms. In particular, we present a formula for the growth function of each Artin--Tits monoid of spherical type (hence of each braid monoid) with respect to the standard generators, as the inverse of the determinant of a very simple matrix. Using this approach, we show that the exponential growth rates of the Artin--Tits monoids of type $A_n$ (positive braid monoids) tend to $3.233636\ldots$ as $n$ tends to infinity. This number is well-known, as it is the growth rate of the coefficients of the only solution $x_0(y)=-(1+y+2y^2+4y^3+9y^4+\cdots)$ to the classical partial theta function. We also describe the sequence $1,1,2,4,9,\ldots$ formed by the coefficients of $-x_0(y)$, by showing that its $k$th term (the coefficient of $y^k$) is equal to the number of braids of length $k$, in the positive braid monoid $A_{\infty}$ on an infinite number of strands, whose maximal lexicographic representative starts with the first generator $a_1$. This is an unexpected connection between the partial theta function and the theory of braids.

Torsion homology and cellular approximation

In this note we describe the role of the Schur multiplier in the structure of the $p$-torsion of discrete groups. More concretely, we show how the knowledge of $H_2G$ allows to approximate many groups by colimits of copies of finite $p$-groups. Our examples include interesting families of non-commutative infinite groups, including Burnside groups, certain solvable examples and the first Grigorchuk group. We also provide a counterexample for a conjecture of E. Farjoun.

Cellular approximations of p-local compact groups

Let A be the classifying space of an abelian p-torsion group. We compute A-cellular approximations (in the sense of Chachólski and Farjoun) of classifying spaces of p-local compact groups, with special emphasis in the cases which arise from honest compact Lie groups.

Cryptography with right-angled Artin groups

In this paper we propose right-angled Artin groups as a platform for secret sharing schemes based on the efficiency (linear time) of the word problem. Inspired by previous work of Grigoriev-Shpilrain in the context of graphs, we define two new problems: Subgroup Isomorphism Problem and Group Homomorphism Problem. Based on them, we also propose two new authentication schemes. For right-angled Artin groups, the Group Homomorphism and Graph Homomorphism problems are equivalent, and the later is known to be NP-complete. In the case of the Subgroup Isomorphism problem, we bring some results due to Bridson who shows there are right-angled Artin groups in which this problem is unsolvable.

K-homology and K-theory for the lamplighter groups of finite groups

Let $F$ be a finite group. We consider the lamplighter group $L=F\wr\mathbb{Z}$ over $F$. We prove that $L$ has a classifying space for proper actions $\underline{E} L$ which is a complex of dimension two. We use this to give an explicit proof of the Baum-Connes conjecture (without coefficients), that states that the assembly map $μ_i^L:K_i^L(\underline{E} L)\rightarrow K_i(C^*L)\;(i=0,1)$ is an isomorphism. Actually, $K_0(C^*L)$ is free abelian of countable rank, with an explicit basis consisting of projections in $C^*L$, while $K_1(C^*L)$ is infinite cyclic, generated by the unitary of $C^*L$ implementing the shift. Finally we show that, for $F$ abelian, the $C^*$-algebra $C^*L$ is completely characterized by $|F|$ up to isomorphism.

Homogeneity test for functional data

In the context of functional data analysis, we propose new two sample tests for homogeneity. Based on some well-known depth measures, we construct four different statistics in order to measure distance between the two samples. A simulation study is performed to check the efficiency of the tests when confronted with shape and magnitude perturbation. Finally, we apply these tools to measure the homogeneity in some samples of real data, obtaining good results using this new method.

The Shapley group value

Following the original interpretation of the Shapley value (Shapley, 1953a) as a priori evaluation of the prospects of a player in a multi-person interaction situation, we propose a group value, which we call the Shapley group value, as a priori evaluation of the prospects of a group of players in a coalitional game when acting as a unit. We study its properties and we give an axiomatic characterization. Relaying on this valuation we analyze the profitability of a group. We motivate our proposal by means of some relevant applications of the Shapley group value, when it is used as an objective function by a decisionmaker who is trying to identify an optimal group of agents in a framework in which agents interact and the attained benefit can be modeled bymeans of a transferable utility game. As an illustrative examplewe analyze the problem of identifying the set of key agents in a terrorist network.

Homotopy idempotent functors on classifying spaces

Fix a prime $p$. Since their definition in the context of Localization Theory, the homotopy functors $P_{B\Z/p}$ and $CW_{B\Z/p}$ have shown to be powerful tools to understand and describe the mod $p$ structure of a space. In this paper, we study the effect of these functors on a wide class of spaces which includes classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and their homotopical analogues. Moreover, we investigate their relationship in this context with other relevant functors in the analysis of the mod $p$ homotopy, such as Bousfield-Kan completion and Bousfield homological localization.

On the classifying space for proper actions of groups with cyclic torsion

In this paper we introduce a common framework for describing the topological part of the Baum-Connes conjecture for a wide class of groups. We compute the Bredon homology for groups with aspherical presentation, one-relator quotients of products of locally indicable groups, extensions of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ by cyclic groups, and fuchsian groups. We take advantage of the torsion structure of these groups to use appropriate models of the universal space for proper actions which allow us, in turn, to extend some technology defined by Mislin in the case of one-relator groups.
