Spectral instability of small-amplitude periodic waves for hyperbolic non-Fickian diffusion advection models with logistic source

A hyperbolic model for diffusion, nonlinear transport (or advection) and production of a scalar quantity, is considered. The model is based on a constitutive law of Cattaneo-Maxwell type expressing non-Fickian diffusion by means of a relaxation time relation. The production or source term is assumed to be of logistic type. This paper studies the existence and spectral stability properties of spatially periodic traveling wave solutions to this system. It is shown that a family of subcharacteristic periodic waves emerges from a local Hopf bifurcation around a critical value of the wave speed. These waves have bounded fundamental period and small-amplitude. In addition, it is shown that these waves are spectrally unstable as solutions to the hyperbolic system. For that purpose, it is proved that the Floquet spectrum of the linearized operator around a wave can be approximated by a linear operator whose point spectrum intersects the unstable half plane of complex numbers with positive real part.

Instability theory of kink and anti-kink profiles for the sine-Gordon equation on Josephson tricrystal boundaries

The aim of this work is to establish a instability study for stationary kink and antikink/kink profiles solutions for the sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a Y-junction so-called a Josephson tricrystal junction. By considering boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ'$-interaction type, it is shown that these kink-soliton type stationary profiles are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. The extension theory of symmetric operators, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and analytic perturbation theory of operators are fundamental ingredients in the stability analysis. The local well-posedness of the sine-Gordon model in $H^1(Y)\times L^2(Y)$ is also established. The theory developed in this investigation has prospects for the study of the (in)-stability of stationary wave solutions of other configurations for kink-solitons profiles.

Unstable kink and anti-kink profile for the sine-Gordon equation on a $\mathcal{Y}$-junction graph with $δ'$-interaction at the vertex

The sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a $\mathcal{Y}$-junction, is considered. The model is endowed with boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ'$-interaction type, expressing continuity of the derivatives of the wave functions plus a Kirchhoff-type rule for the self-induced magnetic flux. It is shown that particular stationary, kink and kink/anti-kink soliton profile solutions to the model are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. To that end, a recently developed linear instability criterion for evolution models on metric graphs by Angulo and Cavalcante (2020), which provides the sufficient conditions on the linearized operator around the wave to have a pair of real positive/negative eigenvalues, is applied. This leads to the spectral study to the linearize operator and of its Morse index. The analysis is based on analytic perturbation theory, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and the extension theory of symmetric operators. The methods presented in this manuscript have prospect for the study of the dynamic of solutions for the sine-Gordon model on metric graphs with finite bounds or on metric tree graphs and/or loop graphs.

Long time dynamics of solutions to $p$-Laplacian diffusion problems with bistable reaction terms

This paper establishes the emergence of slowly moving transition layer solutions for the $p$-Laplacian (nonlinear) evolution equation, \[ u_t = \varepsilon^p(|u_x|^{p-2}u_x)_x - F'(u), \qquad x \in (a,b), \; t > 0, \] where $\varepsilon>0$ and $p>1$ are constants, driven by the action of a family of double-well potentials of the form \[ F(u)=\frac{1}{2n} |1-u^2|^{n}, \] indexed by $n>1$, $n\in\mathbb{R}$ with minima at two pure phases $u = \pm 1$. The equation is endowed with initial conditions and boundary conditions of Neumann type. It is shown that interface layers, or solutions which initially are equal to $\pm 1$ except at a finite number of thin transitions of width $\varepsilon$, persist for an exponentially long time in the critical case with $n=p$, and for an algebraically long time in the supercritical (or degenerate) case with $n > p$. For that purpose, energy bounds for a renormalized effective energy potential of Ginzburg-Landau type are established. In contrast, in the subcritical case with $n<p$, the transition layer solutions are stationary.

Long-time behavior of solutions to the generalized Allen-Cahn model with degenerate diffusivity

The generalized Allen-Cahn equation, \[ u_t=\varepsilon^2(D(u)u_x)_x-\frac{\varepsilon^2}2D'(u)u_x^2-F'(u), \] with nonlinear diffusion, $D = D(u)$, and potential, $F = F(u)$, of the form \[ D(u) = |1-u^2|^{m}, \quad \text{or} \quad D(u) = |1-u|^{m}, \quad m >1, \] and \[ F(u)=\frac{1}{2n}|1-u^2|^{n}, \qquad n\geq2, \] respectively, is studied. These choices correspond to a reaction function that can be derived from a double well potential, and to a generalized degenerate diffusivity coefficient depending on the density $u$ that vanishes at one or at the two wells, $u = \pm 1$. It is shown that interface layer solutions that are equal to $\pm 1$ except at a finite number of thin transitions of width $\varepsilon$ persist for an either exponentially or algebraically long time, depending upon the interplay between the exponents $n$ and $m$. For that purpose, energy bounds for a renormalized effective energy potential of Ginzburg-Landau type are derived.

Unstable kink-soliton profiles for the sine-Gordon equation on a $\mathcal{Y}$-junction graph with $δ$-interaction

The aim of this work is to establish a linear instability result of stationary, kink and kink/anti-kink soliton profile solutions for the sine-Gordon equation on a metric graph with a structure represented by a $\mathcal Y$-junction. The model considers boundary conditions at the graph-vertex of $δ$-interaction type, or in other words, continuity of the wave functions at the vertex plus a law of Kirchhoff-type for the flux. It is shown that kink and kink/anti-kink soliton type stationary profiles are linearly (and nonlinearly) unstable. For that purpose, a linear instability criterion that provides the sufficient conditions on the linearized operator around the wave to have a pair of real positive/negative eigenvalues, is established. As a result, the linear stability analysis depends upon of the spectral study of this linear operator and of its Morse index. The extension theory of symmetric operators, Sturm-Liouville oscillation results and analytic perturbation theory of operators are fundamental ingredients in the stability analysis. A comprehensive study of the local well-posedness of the sine-Gordon model in $\mathcal E(\mathcal Y) \times L^2(\mathcal{Y})$ where $\mathcal E(\mathcal Y) \subset H^1(\mathcal{Y})$ is an appropriate energy space, is also established. The theory developed in this investigation has prospects for the study of the instability of stationary wave solutions of other nonlinear evolution equations on metric graphs.

Metastable patterns for a reaction-diffusion model with mean curvature-type diffusion

Reaction-diffusion equations are widely used to describe a variety of phenomena such as pattern formation and front propagation in biological, chemical and physical systems. In the one-dimensional model with a balanced bistable reaction function, it is well-known that there is persistence of metastable patterns for an exponentially long time, i.e. a time proportional to $\exp(C/\e)$ where $C,\e$ are strictly positive constants and $\e^2$ is the diffusion coefficient. In this paper, we extend such results to the case when the linear diffusion flux is substituted by the mean curvature operator both in Euclidean and Lorentz--Minkowski spaces. More precisely, for both models, we prove existence of metastable states which maintain a transition layer structure for an exponentially long time and we show that the speed of the layers is exponentially small. Numerical simulations, which confirm the analytical results, are also provided.

Orbital stability of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with attractive delta potential and double power repulsive nonlinearity

In this paper, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an attractive (focusing) delta potential and a repulsive (defocusing) double power nonlinearity in one spatial dimension is considered. It is shown, via explicit construction, that both standing wave and equilibrium solutions do exist for certain parameter regimes. In addition, it is proved that both types of wave solutions are orbitally stable under the flow of the equation by minimizing the charge/energy functional.

On the role of cancer cells' diffusion in the tumor growth paradox

In this contribution, the non-local, integro-partial differential system of equations proposed by Hillen et al. (Bull. Math. Biol. 75, 2013, no.1, 161-184) to account for the the tumor growth paradox (or the observation that some incomplete cancer treatments may enhance tumor growth) is reviewed. It is shown that when cancer cells' diffusion effects and Neumann boundary conditions are taken into consideration, the same paradoxical tumor growth emerges.

Spectral stability of traveling fronts for nonlinear hyperbolic equations of bistable type

This paper addresses the existence and spectral stability of traveling fronts for nonlinear hyperbolic equations with a positive "damping" term and a reaction function of bistable type. Particular cases of the former include the relaxed Allen-Cahn equation and the nonlinear version of the telegrapher's equation with bistable reaction term. The existence theory of the fronts is revisited, yielding useful properties such as exponential decay to the asymptotic rest states and a variational formula for the unique wave speed. The spectral problem associated to the linearized equation around the front is established. It is shown that the spectrum of the perturbation problem is stable, that is, it is located in the complex half plane with negative real part, with the exception of the eigenvalue zero associated to translation invariance, which is isolated and simple. In this fashion, it is shown that there exists an spectral gap precluding the accumulation of essential spectrum near the origin. To show that the point spectrum is stable we introduce a transformation of the eigenfunctions that allows to employ energy estimates in the frequency regime. This method produces a new proof of equivalent results for the relaxed Allen-Cahn case and extends the former to a wider class of equations. This result is a first step in a more general program pertaining to the nonlinear stability of the fronts under small perturbations, a problem which remains open.

Kinetic schemes for assessing stability of traveling fronts for the Allen-Cahn equation with relaxation

This paper deals with the numerical (finite volume) approximation of reaction-diffusion systems with relaxation, among which the hyperbolic extension of the Allen--Cahn equation represents a notable prototype. Appropriate discretizations are constructed starting from the kinetic interpretation of the model as a particular case of reactive jump process. Numerical experiments are provided for exemplifying the theoretical analysis (previously developed by the same authors) concerning the stability of traveling waves, and important evidence of the validity of those results beyond the formal hypotheses is numerically established.
