Spatio-temporal coherent molding and retrieval of pulsed signals in optical waveguides

Optical waveguides are key elements for high fidelity, long distance optical communications. Coupled waveguide arrays allow for higher information density, steerting the propagation direction, and for encoding information. However, due to the mixing of relative phases for short pulses containing multiple waveguide-mode frequencies, a process for retrieving an encoded input state once these signals undergo coherent propagation remains elusive. A concept is presented to extract with high fidelity the phase-encrypted input signal from spatio-temporal propagated states. As a realization, an array of coupled waveguides is suggested with the retrieval mechanism being realized by local phase shifts that comply with the identified retrieval concept. Three dimensional full-wave electromagnetic simulations for broadband optical signals in coupled dielectric waveguides confirm the validity of the scheme and the high fidelity of information retrieval pointing to potential applications, for instance in ultrafast coherent coding and decoding of information imprinted on pulse sequences.

Photonics of topological magnetic textures

Topological textures in magnetically ordered materials are important case studies for fundamental research with promising applications in data science. They can also serve as photonic elements to mold electromagnetic fields endowing them with features inherent to the spin order, as demonstrated analytically and numerically in this work. A self-consistent theory is developed for the interaction of spatially structured electromagnetic fields with non-collinear, topologically non-trivial spin textures. A tractable numerical method is designed and implemented for the calculation of the formed magnetic/photonic textures in the entire simulation space. Numerical illustrations are presented for scattering from point-like singularities, i.e. Bloch points, in the magnetization vector fields, evidencing that the geometry and topology of the magnetic order results in photonic fields that embody orbital angular momentum, chirality as well as magnetoelectric densities. Features of the scattered fields can serve as a fingerprint for the underlying magnetic texture and its dynamics. The findings point to the potential of topological magnetic textures as a route to molding photonic fields.

Conductive domain walls in ferroelectrics as tunable coherent THz radiation source

THz emission associated with currents in conductive domains in BiFeO$_3$ following infrared radiation is theoretically investigated. This experimentally observed phenomenon is explained by the domain wall stripes acting as metallic resonators with the oscillating charge accumulation being at the domain wall edges. The charge oscillation frequency is related to the plasma frequency inside the domain wall. The value of plasma frequency determines both the frequency and the amplitude of the emission emanating from the BiFeO$_3$ lattice. We show that for certain geometries of the domain wall structure and for specific polarization of the incident pulse the THz emission embodies a non-vanishing chirality.

Effective negative specific heat by destabilization of metastable states in dipolar systems

We study dipolarly coupled three dimensional spin systems in both the microcanonical and the canonical ensembles by introducing appropriate numerical methods to determine the microcanonical temperature and by realizing a canonical model of heat bath. In the microcanonical ensemble, we show the existence of a branch of stable antiferromagnetic states in the low energy region. Other metastable ferromagnetic states exist in this region: by externally perturbing them, an effective negative specific heat is obtained. In the canonical ensemble, for low temperatures, the same metastable states are unstable and reach a new branch of more robust metastable states which is distinct from the stable one. Our statistical physics approach allows us to put some order in the complex structure of stable and metastable states of dipolar systems.

Pulse solutions of the fractional effective models of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice with long-range interactions

We study analytical solutions of the Fractional Boussinesq Equation (FBE), which is an effective model for the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) one-dimensional lattice with long-range couplings. The couplings decay as a power-law with exponent s, with 1 < s < 3, so that the energy density is finite, but s is small enough to observe genuine long-range effects. The analytic solutions are obtained by introducing an ansatz for the dependence of the field on space and time. This allows to reduce the FBE to an ordinary differential equation, which can be explicitly solved. The solutions are initially localized and they delocalize progressively as time evolves. Depending on the value of s the solution is either a pulse (meaning a bump) or an anti-pulse (i.e., a hole) on a constant field for 1 < s < 2 and 2 < s < 3, respectively.

Traveling Solitons in Long-Range Oscillator Chains

We investigate the existence and propagation of solitons in a long-range extension of the quartic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain of anharmonic oscillators. The coupling in the linear term decays as a power-law with an exponent greater than 1 and less than 3. We obtain an analytic perturbative expression of traveling envelope solitons by introducing a Non Linear Schrodinger (NLS) equation for the slowly varying amplitude of short wavelength modes. Due to the non analytic properties of the dispersion relation, it is crucial to develop the theory using discrete difference operators. Those properties are also the ultimate reason why kink-solitons may exist but are unstable, at variance with the short-range FPU model. We successfully compare these approximate analytic results with numerical simulations.

Landau-Zener Tunneling of Solitons

A simple mechanical analog describing Landau-Zener tunneling effect is proposed using two weakly coupled chains of nonlinear oscillators with gradually decreasing (first chain) and increasing (second chain) masses. The model allows to investigate nonlinear generalization of Landau-Zener tunneling effect considering soliton propagation and tunneling between the chains. It is shown that soliton tunneling characteristics become drastically dependent on its amplitude in nonlinear regime. The validity of the developed tunneling theory is justified via comparison with direct numerical simulations on oscillator ladder system.

Fractional lattice charge transport

We consider the dynamics of noninteracting electrons on a square lattice in the presence of a magnetic flux α and a dc electric field E oriented along the lattice diagonal. In general, the adiabatic dynamics of an electron will be characterized by Bloch oscillations in the electrical field direction and dispersive ballistic transport in the perpendicular direction. For rational values of α and a corresponding discrete set of values of E(α) vanishing gaps in the spectrum induce a fractionalization of the charge in the perpendicular direction - while left movers are still performing dispersive ballistic transport, the complementary fraction of right movers is propagating in a dispersionless relativistic manner in the opposite direction. Generalizations to other field directions, lattice symmetries and the possible probing of the effect with atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and photonic networks are discussed.

Landau-Zener Bloch oscillations with perturbed flat bands

Sinusoidal Bloch oscillations appear in band structures exposed to external fields. Landau-Zener (LZ) tunneling between different bands is usually a counteracting effect limiting Bloch oscillations. Here we consider a flat band network with two dispersive and one flat bands, e.g. for ultracold atoms and optical waveguide networks. Using external synthetic gauge and gravitational fields we obtain a perturbed yet gapless band structure with almost flat parts. The resulting Bloch oscillations consist of two parts - a fast scan through the nonflat part of the dispersion structure, and an almost complete halt for substantial time when the atomic wave packet is trapped in the original flat band part of the unperturbed spectrum, made possible due to LZ tunneling.

All-phononic Digital Transistor on the Basis of Gap-Soliton Dynamics in Anharmonic Oscillator Ladder

A conceptual mechanism of amplification of phonons by phonons on the basis of nonlinear band-gap transmission (supratransmission) phenomenon is presented. As an example a system of weakly coupled chains of anharmonic oscillators is considered. One (source) chain is driven harmonically by boundary with a frequency located in the upper band close to the band edge of the ladder system. Amplification happens when a second (gate) chain is driven by a small signal in the counter phase and with the same frequency as first chain. If the total driving of both chains overcomes the band-gap transmission threshold the large amplitude band-gap soliton emerges and amplification scenario is realized. The mechanism is interpreted as nonlinear superposition of evanescent and propagating nonlinear modes manifesting in a single or double soliton generation working in band-gap or band-pass regimes, respectively. The results could be straightforwardly generalized for all-optical or all-magnonic contexts and has all the promises for logic gate operations.

Instabilities and relaxation to equilibrium in long-range oscillator chains

We study instabilities and relaxation to equilibrium in a long-range extension of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPU) oscillator chain by exciting initially the lowest Fourier mode. Localization in mode space is stronger for the long-range FPU model. This allows us to uncover the sporadic nature of instabilities, i.e., by varying initially the excitation amplitude of the lowest mode, which is the control parameter, instabilities occur in narrow amplitude intervals. Only for sufficiently large values of the amplitude, the system enters a permanently unstable regime. These findings also clarify the long-standing problem of the relaxation to equilibrium in the short-range FPU model. Because of the weaker localization in mode space of this latter model, the transfer of energy is retarded and relaxation occurs on a much longer time-scale.

Linear Amplification of Optical Signal in Coupled Photonic Crystal Waveguides

We introduce a weakly coupled photonic crystal waveguide as a promising and realistic model for all-optical amplification. A symmetric pillar type coupled photonic crystal waveguide consisting of dielectric rods periodically distributed in a free space is proposed as all-optical amplifier. Using the unique features of the photonic crystals to control and guide the light, we have properly chosen the frequency at which only one mode (odd mode) becomes the propagating mode in the coupled photonic crystal waveguide, whereas another mode (even mode) is completely reflected from the guiding structure. Under this condition, the all-optical amplification is fully realized. The amplification coefficient for the continuous signal and the Gaussian pulse is calculated.

Nonlinear All Optical Digital Amplification of the Light Pulse in Weakly Coupled Photonic Crystal Waveguides

All-optical amplification of the light pulse in a weakly coupled two nonlinear photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) is proposed. We consider pillar-type PCWs, which consist of the periodically distributed circular rods made from a Kerr-type dielectric material. Dispersion diagrams of the symmetric and antisymmetric modes are calculated. The operating frequency is properly chosen to be located at the edge of the dispersion diagram of the modes. In the linear case no propagation modes are excited at this frequency, however, in case of nonlinear medium when the amplitude of the injected signal is above some threshold value, the solitons are formed and they are propagating inside the coupled nonlinear PCWs. Near field distributions of the light pulse propagation inside the coupled nonlinear PCWs and the output powers of the registered signals are studied in a detail. The amplification coefficient is calculated at the various amplitudes of the launched signal. The results vividly demonstrate the effectiveness of the weakly coupled nonlinear PCWs as all-optical digital amplifier.

All optical Amplification in Metallic Subwavelength Linear Waveguides

Proposed all optical amplification scenario is based on the properties of light propagation in two coupled subwavelength metallic slab waveguides where for particular choice of waveguide parameters two propagating (symmetric) and non-propagating (antisymmetric) eigenmodes coexist. For such a setup incident beams realize boundary conditions for forming a stationary state as a superposition of mentioned eigenmodes. It is shown both analytically and numerically that amplification rate in this completely linear mechanism diverges for small signal values.

Dipolar needles in the microcanonical ensemble: evidence of spontaneous magnetization and ergodicity breaking

We have studied needle shaped three-dimensional classical spin systems with purely dipolar interactions in the microcanonical ensemble, using both numerical simulations and analytical approximations. We have observed spontaneous magnetization for different finite cubic lattices. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase is shown to be first-order. For two lattice types we have observed magnetization flips in the phase transition region. In some cases, gaps in the accessible values of magnetization appear, a signature of the ergodicity breaking found for systems with long-range interactions. We analytically explain these effects by performing a nontrivial mapping of the model Hamiltonian onto a one-dimensional Ising model with competing antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic mean-field interactions. These results hint at performing experiments on isolated dipolar needles in order to verify some of the exotic properties of systems with long-range interactions in the microcanonical ensemble.

Negative refraction and spatial echo in optical waveguide arrays

The special symmetry properties of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation allow a complete revival of the initial wavefunction. That is employed in the context of stationary propagation of light in a waveguide array. As an inverting system we propose a short array of almost isolated waveguides which cause a relative pi phase shift in the neighboring waveguides. By means of numerical simulations of the model equations we demonstrate a novel mechanism for the negative refraction of spatial solitons.

Correlated metallic two particle bound states in quasiperiodic chains

Single particle states in a chain with quasiperiodic potential show a metal-insulator transition upon the change of the potential strength. We consider two particles with local interaction in the single particle insulating regime. The two particle states change from being localized to delocalized upon an increase of the interaction strength to a nonperturbative finite value. At even larger interaction strength the states become localized again. This transition of two particle bound states into a correlated metal is due to a resonant mixing of the noninteracting two particle eigenstates. In the discovered correlated metal states two particles move coherently together through the whole chain, therefore contributing to a finite conductivity.

Resonant invisibility with finite range interacting fermions

We study the eigenstates of two opposite spin fermions on a one-dimensional lattice with finite range interaction. The eigenstates are projected onto the set of Fock eigenstates of the noninteracting case. We find antiresonances for symmetric eigenstates, which eliminate the interaction between two symmetric Fock states when satisfying a corresponding selection rule.
