Mesons: Relativistic Bound States with String Tension

A systematic method of analysing Bethe-Salpeter equation using spectral representation for the relativistic bound state wave function is given. This has been explicitly applied in the context of perturbative QCD with string tension in the $1 \over N$ expansion. We show that there are only a few stable bound state mesons due to the small "threshold mass"(constituent mass) of quarks. The asymptotic properties of the bound states are analytically analysed. The spectrum is derived analytically and compared phenomenologically. Chiral symmetry breaking and PCAC results are demonstrated. We make a simple minded observation to determine the size of the bound states as a function of the energy of the boundstate.

Dileptons from $η_c$ in Nucleus-Nucleus collisions

Preliminary estimates suggest that excess dimuon production with invariant mass in the range 1.5 -- 2.5 GeV in nucleus-nucleus collisions can be explained on the basis of $η_c$ production. This appears to be consistent with all the peripheral and central collision data with various nuclei such as S-U at 200 GeV/nucleon except for the central collision data on Pb-Pb at 158 GeV/nucleon. Some explanations based on glueball production for Pb-Pb data are discussed.

Spontaneous Time Asymmetry due to Horizon

We show that quantized matter fields in the presence of background metrics with Horizon exhibit spontaneous time asymmetry. All quantized matter fields have to vanish at the horizon. Some phenemenological applications of this in the context of black holes and early universe are considered.

Dual gluons and monopoles in 2+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory

2+1-dimensional Yang-Mills theory is reinterpreted in terms of metrics on 3-manifolds. The dual gluons are related to diffeomorphisms of the 3-manifold. Monopoles are identified with points where the Ricci tensor has triply degenerate eigenvalues. The dual gluons have the desired interaction with these monopoles. This would give a mass for the dual gluons resulting in confinement.

Perturbative QCD with string tension

String tension is introduced in perturbative QCD without hindering ultra violet renormalizability . The running gauge coupling constant remains unaltered and the string tension in the high energy limit vanishes asymptotically. Using 1/N techinique the theory can be explicitly analytically computable with cofinement built in . Spontaneous chiral symmetry breakdown along with its Goldstone is exhibited.

Infrared Behaviour of Systems With Goldstone Bosons

We develop various complementary concepts and techniques for handling quantum fluctuations of Goldstone bosons. We emphasise that one of the consequences of the masslessness of Goldstone bosons is that the longitudinal fluctuations also have a diverging susceptibility characterised by an anomalous dimension $(d-2)$ in space-time dimensions $2<d<4$.In $d=4$ these fluctuations diverge logarithmically in the infrared region. We show the generality of this phenomenon by providing three arguments based on i). Renormalization group flows, ii). Ward identities, and iii). Schwinger-Dyson equations. We obtain an explicit form for the generating functional of one-particle irreducible vertices of the O(N) (non)--linear $σ$--models in the leading 1/N approximation. We show that this incorporates all infrared behaviour correctly both in linear and non-linear $σ$-- models. Our techniques provide an alternative to chiral perturbation theory. Some consequences are discussed briefly.

Dual of 3-dimensional pure SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory and the Ponzano-Regge Model

By carrying out character expansion and integration over all link variables, the partition function of 3-dimensional pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory is rewritten in terms of 6j symbols. The result is Ponzano-Regge model of 3-dimensional gravity with a term that explicitly breaks general coordinate invariance. Conversely, we show that dual of Ponzano-Regge model is an SU(2) lattice gauge theory where all plaquette variables are constrained to the identity matrix and therefore the model needs no further regularization. Our techniques are applicable to other models with non-abelian symmetries in any dimension and provide duality transform for the partition function.
