On Constrained Riesz Minimum Energy Problems

The constrained equilibrium problem for the logarithmic potential was introduced by Rakhmanov (1996) as he realized that the asymptotic distribution of the zeros of discrete orthogonal polynomials in a compact interval could be described in terms of the equilibrium measure of this interval in a class of measures subject to a certain constraint. Other authors such as Dragnev and Saff (1997), and Kuijlaars and Van Assche (1999), extended this approach to more general settings. These problems have proven to be useful for describing asymptotic distributions in different settings. In the current paper, we consider constrained equilibrium problems in the Riesz setting, that is, for $s$-Riesz potentials in the hyperplane $\mathbb{R}^d,$ with $d\geq 1$ and $\max (0,d-2) < s < d$. Along with some general results, an illustrative example consisting of the solution of a constrained equilibrium problem in the unit ball is studied in detail. This is the main part of the paper. Finally, a number of numerical experiments show how the constrained equilibrium measure, the solution of the problem, may be discretized using the so-called 'constrained Leja points' introduced by Coroian and Dragnev (2001).

Riesz equilibrium on a ball in the external field of a point charge

We investigate the Riesz energy minimization problem on a $d$-dimensional ball in the presence of an external field created by a point charge above the ball in $\R^{d+1}$, $d\geq1$. Both cases of an attractive charge and a repulsive charge are considered. The notion of a signed equilibrium measure is one of the main tools in the present study. For the case of a positive (repulsive) charge, the determination of the support of the equilibrium measure is a nontrivial question. We solve it in the one-dimensional case by making use of iterated balayage, a method already applied in logarithmic potential theory. Here we use a modified version of it, in order to handle the phenomenon of mass loss, characteristic of the Riesz balayage of positive measures. Moreover, we also consider minimization of Coulomb energy on the ball in dimension $d\geq2$, and of logarithmic energy on the segment in dimension 1. Different techniques are used for these two cases.

Riesz energy problems with external fields and related theory

In this paper, we investigate Riesz energy problems on unbounded conductors in $\R^d$ in the presence of general external fields $Q$, not necessarily satisfying the growth condition $Q(x)\to\infty$ as $x\to\infty$ assumed in several previous studies. We provide sufficient conditions on $Q$ for the existence of an equilibrium measure and the compactness of its support. Particular attention is paid to the case of the hyperplanar conductor $\R^{d}$, embedded in $\R^{d+1}$, when the external field is created by the potential of a signed measure $\nu$ outside of $\R^{d}$. Simple cases where $\nu$ is a discrete measure are analyzed in detail. New theoretic results for Riesz potentials, in particular an extension of a classical theorem by de La Vall\'ee-Poussin, are established. These results are of independent interest.

On the Best Uniform Polynomial Approximation to the Checkmark Function

The best uniform polynomial approximation of the checkmark function $f(x)=|x-\alpha |$ is considered, as $\alpha$ varies in $(-1,1)$. For each fixed degree $n$, the minimax error $E_n (\alpha)$ is shown to be piecewise analytic in $\alpha$. In addition, $E_n(\alpha)$ is shown to feature $n-1$ piecewise linear decreasing/increasing sections, called V-shapes. The points of the alternation set are proven to be monotone increasing in $\alpha$ and their dynamics are completely characterized. We also prove a conjecture of Shekhtman that for odd $n$, $E_n(\alpha)$ has a local maximum at $\alpha=0$.

On point-mass Riesz external fields on the real axis

The purpose of this work is twofold. First, we aim to extend for $0<s<1$ the results of one of the authors about equilibrium measures in the real axis in external fields created by point-mass charges for the case of logarithmic potentials ($s=0$). Our second motivation comes from the work of the other two authors on Riesz $s$-equilibrium problems on finitely many intervals on the real line in the presence of external fields. They have shown that when the signed equilibrium measure has concave positive part on every interval, then the $s$-equilibrium support is also a union of finitely many intervals, with one of them at most included in each of the initial intervals. As the positive part of the signed equilibrium for point-mass external fields is not necessarily concave, the investigation of the corresponding $s$-equilibrium support is of comparative interest. Moreover, we provide simple examples of compactly supported equilibrium measures in external fields $Q$ not satisfying the usual requirements about the growth at infinity, that is, $\displaystyle \lim_{|x|\rightarrow \infty}\,Q(x) = \infty\,.$ Our main tools are signed equilibrium measures and iterated balayage algorithm in the context of Riesz $s$-equilibrium problems on the real line. As these techniques are not mainstream work in the field and can be applied in other contexts we highlight their use here.

The error bounds of Gauss quadrature formulae for the modified weight functions of Chebyshev type

In this paper, we consider the Gauss quadrature formulae corresponding to some modifications of anyone of the four Chebyshev weights, considered by Gautschi and Li in \cite{gauli}. As it is well known, in the case of analytic integrands, the error of these quadrature formulas can be represented as a contour integral with a complex kernel. We study the kernel, as it is often considered, on elliptic contours with foci at the points $\mp 1$ and such that the sum of semi-axes is $\rho>1$, of the mentioned quadrature formulas, and derive some error bounds for them. In addition, we obtain, for the first time as far as we know, a result about the behavior of the modulus of the corresponding kernels on those ellipses in some cases. Numerical examples checking the accuracy of such error bounds are included.

Equilibrium measures in the presence of weak rational external fields

In this paper equilibrium measures in the presence of external fields created by fixed charges are analyzed. These external fields are a particular case of the so-called rational external fields (in the sense that their derivatives are rational functions). Along with some general results, a thorough analysis of the particular case of two fixed negative charges (``attractors') is presented. As for the main tools used, this paper is a natural continuation of \cite{MOR2015}, where polynomial external fields were thoroughly studied, and \cite{OrSL2015}, where rational external fields with a polynomial part were considered. However, the absence of the polynomial part in the external fields analyzed in the current paper adds a considerable difficulty to solve the problem and justifies its separated treatment; moreover, it is noteworthy to point out the simplicity and beauty of the results obtained.
