Subleading operators and gamma5-scheme dependence in SMEFT for Higgs boson pair production

The calculation of contributions from the chromomagnetic and four-top-quark-operators within Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion is presented, in combination with NLO QCD corrections. Here we focus on the $γ_5$-scheme dependence introduced by the four-top-quark-operators and the interplay with other operators contributing to this process in SMEFT.

Renormalisation group running effects in $pp\to t\bar{t}h$ in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

We study the effects of renormalisation group running of the Wilson coefficients in Standard Model Effective Field Theory, using the process $pp \to t \bar{t}h$ as a showcase. We consider both strong and top Yukawa running effects, since the latter can be relevant in presence of large Wilson coefficients. We study the difference between the use of a dynamical and fixed renormalisation scale by exploring different scenarios for the higher-dimensional operators at the high energy scale of new physics, assumed to be at the TeV scale.

Virtual QCD corrections to $gg \to ZZ$: top-quark loops from a transverse-momentum expansion

We present the virtual corrections due to the top-quark loops for the process $gg \to ZZ$ at next-to-leading order in QCD. The associated two-loop box diagrams are computed using a small-transverse-momentum expansion. Our results are then merged with those available in the complementary energy region, obtained via a high-energy expansion, in order to provide an analytic result that is valid in the whole phase space. The results presented allow for an efficient modelling of the signal--background interference as well as the irreducible background in off-shell Higgs production.

On $γ_5$ schemes and the interplay of SMEFT operators in the Higgs-gluon coupling

We calculate the four-top quark operator contributions to Higgs production via gluon fusion in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. The four-top operators enter for the first time via two-loop diagrams. Due to their chiral structure they contain $γ_5$, so special care needs to be taken when using dimensional regularisation for the loop integrals. We use two different schemes for the continuation of $γ_5$ to $D$ space-time dimensions in our calculations and present a mapping for the parameters in the two schemes. This generically leads to an interplay of different operators, such as four-top operators, chromomagnetic operators or Yukawa-type operators at the loop level. We validate our results by examples of matching onto UV models.

Higgs probes of top contact interactions and their interplay with Higgs self-coupling

We present a method which relies on loop contributions from four-top SMEFT operators to single Higgs observables to contrain their Wilson coefficients. Such loop-induced terms have a non-trivial interplay with the extraction of the trilinear Higgs coupling. We show that this strategy can, for some operators, lead to more stringent bounds than direct measurement via top quark data. Finally, we mention some recent developements in the treatment of $γ_5$ in dimensional regularisation in the context of the SMEFT.

Light-quark Yukawa couplings from off-shell Higgs production

Yukawa couplings of the first quark generation are notoriously difficult to constrain due to their small values within the Standard Model. Here we propose Higgs off-shell production, with the Higgs boson decaying to four leptons, as a probe of the up- and down-quark Yukawa couplings. Using kinematic discriminants similar to the ones employed in the Higgs width measurements we find that the down (up) Yukawa coupling can be constrained to a factor of 156 (260) times its Standard Model value at the high-luminosity LHC assuming only experimental systematic uncertainties. Off-shell Higgs production hence provides better sensitivity to the first-generation quark Yukawa couplings with respect to other probes such as Higgs+jet or Higgs pair production.

Higgs boson pair production at NLO in the POWHEG approach and the top quark mass uncertainties

We present a new Monte Carlo code for Higgs boson pair production at next-to-leading order in the POWHEG-BOX Monte Carlo approach. The code is based on analytic results for the two loop virtual corrections which include the full top quark mass dependence. This feature allows to freely assign the value of all input parameters, including the trilinear Higgs boson self coupling, as well as to vary the renormalization scheme employed for the top quark mass. We study the uncertainties due to the top-mass renormalization scheme allowing the trilinear Higgs boson self coupling to vary around its Standard Model value including parton shower effects. Results are presented for both inclusive and differential observables.

Machine learning the trilinear and light-quark Yukawa couplings from Higgs pair kinematic shapes

Revealing the Higgs pair production process is the next big challenge in high energy physics. In this work, we explore the use of interpretable machine learning and cooperative game theory for extraction of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling in Higgs pair production. In particular, we show how a topological decomposition of the gluon-gluon fusion Higgs pair production process can be used to simplify the machine learning analysis flow. Furthermore, we extend the analysis to include $q\bar{q}\to hh$ production, which is strongly suppressed in the Standard Model, to extract the trilinear Higgs coupling and to bound large deviations of the light-quark Yukawa couplings from the Standard Model values. The constraints on the rescaling of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling, $κ_λ$, and the rescaling of light-quark Yukawa couplings, $κ_u$ and $κ_d$, at HL-LHC (FCC-hh) from single parameter fits are: \begin{eqnarray} κ_λ&=&[0.53,1.7] \;\;([0.97, 1.03])\nonumber \newline κ_u&=&[-470,430] \;\;([-58,55])\nonumber \newline κ_d&=&[-360,360] \;\;([-26,28])\nonumber \end{eqnarray} We show that the simultaneous modification of the Yukawa couplings can dilute the constraints on the trilinear coupling significantly. We perform similar analyses for FCC-hh. We discuss some motivated flavourful new physics scenarios where such an analysis prevails.

Higgs physics confronts the $M_W$ anomaly

The recent high-precision measurement of the $W$ mass by the CDF collaboration is in sharp tension with the Standard Model prediction as obtained by the electroweak fit. If confirmed, this finding can only be explained in terms of new physics effects. In this work, we point out a generic connection between the $M_W$ anomaly and Higgs physics observables such as $h\toγγ, Zγ$ and the ratio $h\to ZZ/WW$. Moreover, we systematically classify new physics scenarios which can address the $M_W$ anomaly via a tree-level contribution to the $\hat T$ parameter. These include a real scalar triplet, a scalar quadruplet with the same hypercharge of the Higgs doublet, a $Z'$ boson, a vector triplet with unit hypercharge and a vector boson with the gauge quantum numbers of the Higgs doublet. These solutions to the $M_W$ anomaly are characterized by new physics states which are typically too heavy to be discovered in direct searches, but which might leave their imprints in Higgs physics.

On the NLO QCD Corrections to Gluon-Initiated ZH Production

We compute the QCD corrections at next-to-leading order for the process $gg \rightarrow ZH$, including both the virtual two-loop terms and real-emission contributions. The two-loop box diagrams in the virtual corrections are approximated analytically over the complete phase space, combining the results of an expansion in the limit of small transverse momentum and an expansion in the regime of high energy. We obtain both inclusive and differential results for the cross section. We find that the NLO QCD corrections are of the same size as the LO contribution up to $ZH$ invariant masses close to 1 TeV, but they increase significantly when higher energies are considered, due to a class of real-emission diagrams in which the $Z$ boson is radiated from an open quark line. Finally, we estimate the uncertainty due to the renormalization scheme used for the top-quark mass both on the total and differential cross section.

Gluon Fusion Production at NLO: Merging the Transverse Momentum and the High-Energy Expansions

The virtual corrections to $gg\to HH$ and $gg\to ZH$ are analytically evaluated combining an expansion in the small transverse momentum of the final particles with an expansion valid at high energies. The two expansion methods describe complementary regions of the phase space and we merge their results, extending the range of validity of both expansions using Padé approximants. We show that this approach can reproduce the available numerical results retaining the exact top quark mass dependence with an accuracy well below the 1% level. Our results allow a fast and flexible evaluation of the virtual corrections of the considered processes. Furthermore, they are available in different renormalisation schemes of the top quark mass.

Higgs probes of top quark contact interactions and their interplay with the Higgs self-coupling

We calculate the dominant contributions of third generation four-quark operators to single-Higgs production and decay. They enter via loop corrections to Higgs decays into gluons, photons and $b\bar{b}$, and in Higgs production via gluon fusion and in association with top quark pairs. We show that these loop effects can, in some cases, lead to better constraints than those from fits to top quark data. Finally, we investigate whether these four-fermion operators can spoil the determination of the trilinear Higgs self-coupling from fits to single-Higgs data.

Hunting for CP-violating axionlike particle interactions

The impact of axion-like particles (ALPs) on the search of permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of molecules, atoms, nuclei and nucleons is systematically investigated. We classify first the full set of CP-violating Jarlskog invariants emerging in the ALP effective field theory (EFT) containing operators up to dimension-5. Then, we evaluate the leading short-distance effects to the EDMs up to two-loop order. The high sensitivity of EDMs to CP-violating ALP interactions is emphasised exploiting both the current and projected experimental sensitivities.

Virtual corrections to $gg\to ZH$ via a transverse momentum expansion

We compute the next-to-leading virtual QCD corrections to the partonic cross section of the production of a Higgs boson in association with a $Z$ boson in gluon fusion. The calculation is based on the recently introduced method of evaluating the amplitude via an expansion in terms of a small transverse momentum. We generalize the method to the case of different masses in the final state and of a process not symmetric in the forward-backward direction exchange. Our analytic approach gives a very good approximation (better than percent) of the partonic cross section in the center of mass energy region up to $\sim 750 \,\textrm{GeV}$, where at the LHC $\sim 98\%$ of the total hadronic cross section is concentrated.

Padé approach to top-quark mass effects in gluon fusion amplitudes

Gluon fusion processes like single and double Higgs production exhibit slow convergence and pose severe computational challenges. We show how the top-quark mass dependence of the virtual amplitudes can be reconstructed with a conformal mapping and Padé approximants based on the expansion in the inverse top-quark mass and the non-analytic terms in the expansion around the top threshold. The method is then applied at two- and three-loop order.

Probing Higgs couplings to light quarks via Higgs pair production

We consider the potential of the Higgs boson pair production process to probe the light quark Yukawa couplings. We show within an effective theory description that the prospects of constraining enhanced first generation light quark Yukawa couplings in Higgs pair production are similar to other methods and channels, due to a coupling of two Higgs bosons to two fermions. Higgs pair production can hence also probe if the Higgs sector couples non-linearly to the light quark generations. For the second generation, we show that by employing charm tagging for the Higgs boson pair decaying to $c\bar{c}γγ$, we can obtain similarly good prospects for measuring the charm Yukawa coupling as in other direct probes.

Probing light Yukawa couplings in Higgs pair production

One of the puzzles of the SM is the large hierarchy between the Yukawa couplings of different flavours. Yukawa couplings of the first and the second generation are constrained only very weakly so far. However, one can obtain large deviations in the Yukawa couplings in several New Physics (NP) models, such as e.g. models with new vector-like quarks, or new Higgs bosons that couple naturally to individual fermion families. In this work, we investigate the potential bounds on the NP Higgs Yukawa couplings modification $ κ_f$ for light quarks from double-Higgs at the LHC, starting from a model independent formalism. We have looked at the two Higgs boson final state $ b \bar b γγ$, and the relevant experimental cuts to reduce backgrounds and estimated the potential exclusion bounds for $ κ_f$. We have considered both linear and non-linear effective field theory for the Higgs light quark coupling modifications.

Top quark mass effects in $gg\to ZZ$ at two loops and off-shell Higgs interference

We consider top-quark mass effects in the Higgs-interference contribution to $Z$-boson pair production in gluon fusion. While this production mechanism is formally of next-to-next-to leading order, its contribution is numerically important above the top threshold $M_{ZZ}^2=4m_t^2$. This region is essential to constrain the width of the Higgs boson and good control over the top-quark mass dependence is crucial. We determine the form factors that are relevant for the interference contribution at two-loop order using a method based on a conformal mapping and Padé approximants constructed from the expansions of the amplitude for large top mass and around the top threshold.
