Reconstruction of Power Spectrum of Primordial Curvature Perturbations on small scales from Primordial Black Hole Binaries scenario of LIGO/VIRGO detection

As a candidate bound for the Binary Black Hole (BBH) merger events detected by LIGO/Virgo, Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) provide a useful tool to investigate the primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. Using the GWTC-1 to GWTC-3 catalogs, under the scenario that PBHs originate from large primordial curvature perturbations on small scales during inflationary epoch, we for the first time reconstruct the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales. It is found that the value of the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum is enhanced to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$ on scales $\mathcal{O}(1)$ pc. This may imply the validity of PBH as a possible BBH merger candidate.

Consistency of matter coupling in modified gravity

Matter coupling in modified gravity theories is a nontrivial issue when the gravitational Lagrangian possesses a degeneracy structure to avoid the problem of the Ostrogradsky ghost. Recently, this issue was addressed for bosonic matter fields in the generalized disformal Horndeski class, which is so far the most general class of ghost-free scalar-tensor theories obtained by performing a higher-derivative generalization of invertible disformal transformations on Horndeski theories. In this paper, we clarify the consistency of fermionic matter coupling in the generalized disformal Horndeski theories. We develop the transformation law for the tetrad associated with the generalized disformal transformation to see how it affects the fermionic matter coupling. We find that the consistency of the fermionic matter coupling requires an additional condition on top of the one required for the bosonic case. As a result, we identify a subclass of the generalized disformal Horndeski class which allows for consistent coupling of ordinary matter fields, including the standard model particles.

Viable massive gravity without nonlinear screening

We study nonlinear effects of perturbations around a cosmological background in projected massive gravity, which admits self-accelerating solutions in an open FLRW universe. Using the zero-curvature scaling limit, we derive nonlinear equations containing all the relevant terms on subhorizon scales. We find that the solution for a scalar graviton vanishes completely for all scales, which agrees with the linear perturbation analysis in the previous study. In addition, the effects on the gravitational potential due to the next order perturbation are strongly suppressed within the horizon. Therefore, a screening mechanism is no longer needed for consistency with solar-system experiments in the projected massive gravity.

Cosmological gravity probes: connecting recent theoretical developments to forthcoming observations

Since the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the present Universe, significant theoretical developments have been made in the area of modified gravity. In the meantime, cosmological observations have been providing more high-quality data, allowing us to explore gravity on cosmological scales. To bridge the recent theoretical developments and observations, we present an overview of a variety of modified theories of gravity and the cosmological observables in the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure, supplemented with a summary of predictions for cosmological observables derived from cosmological perturbations and sophisticated numerical studies. We specifically consider scalar-tensor theories in the Horndeski and DHOST family, massive gravity/bigravity, vector-tensor theories, metric-affine gravity, and cuscuton/minimally-modified gravity, and discuss the current status of those theories with emphasis on their physical motivations, validity, appealing features, the level of maturity, and calculability. We conclude that the Horndeski theory is one of the most well-developed theories of modified gravity, although several remaining issues are left for future observations. The paper aims to help to develop strategies for testing gravity with ongoing and forthcoming cosmological observations.

Linear growth of structure in projected massive gravity

In the present paper, we investigate the linear growth of matter fluctuations based on a concrete model of the projected massive gravity, which is free of the Boulware-Deser ghost and preserves the global Lorentz symmetry. We found that at subhorizon scales, the modification to the linear growth is strongly suppressed even without nonlinear screening of an additional force. In addition, we obtain observational constraints from distance and redshift space distortion measurements and find that there is a parameter region that is consistent both observationally and theoretically.

Neutron star cooling in modified gravity theories

We study thermal evolution of isolated neutron stars in scalar-tensor theories for the first time. Whether the rapid cooling due to the direct Urca process occurs or not is an interesting question in the viewpoint of the temperature observation of isolated neutron stars. Moreover, investigation of the cooling effect of nucleon superfluidity also has the large uncertainties though it is important in modern cooling theory. The cooling effect is typically influenced by the proton fraction and the central density. If a fifth force is mediated due to modification of gravity, the relation between the central density and mass of neutron stars differs from one in general relativity, and the cooling curve is also naively expected to be varied. We find that an unscreened fifth force near the surface of neutron stars changes mass-central density relation, and the direct Urca process can be triggered even for neutron stars with smaller mass. We also present cooling curves including nucleon superfluidity under the scalar-tensor theory. These results show that it might be useful to test gravitational theories with cooling observations of neutron stars.

Vainshtein Mechanism in Generalised Massive Gravity

We present a non-linear analysis of perturbations around cosmological solutions in Generalised Massive gravity. This Lorentz invariant theory is an extension of de Rham, Gabadadze, Tolley massive gravity that propagates $5$ degrees of freedom while allowing stable open FLRW cosmologies. For a minimal model that supports a self-accelerating background, we study the dynamics of non-linear perturbations. We find that the equation for the scalar graviton is distinct from the analogues in Horndeski and DHOST theories. We numerically solve the equation to find a new type of nonlinear solution for the scalar mode, and confirm the presence of a Vainshtein screening mechanism. We show that the PPN parameter approaches its GR value at solar system scales and satisfies the current bounds.

Reconstruction of Primordial Power Spectrum of curvature perturbation from the merger rate of Primordial Black Hole Binaries

The properties of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales are still unknown while those on large scales have been well probed by the observations of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies and the large scale structure. In this paper, we propose the reconstruction method of primordial curvature perturbations on small scales through the merger rate of binary primordial black holes, which could form from large primordial curvature perturbation on small scales.

On Lorentz-invariant bi-spin-2 theories

We investigate a Lorentz invariant action which is quadratic in two rank-2 symmetric tensor fields in Minkowski spacetime. We apply a scalar-vector-tensor decomposition to two tensor fields by virtue of 3-dimensional rotation-invariance of Minkowski spacetime and classify theories with seven degrees of freedom based on the Hamiltonian analysis. We find two new theories, which cannot be mapped from the linearized Hassan-Rosen bigravity. In these theories, the new mass interactions can be allowed thanks to the transverse diffeomorphism invariance of action.

Stability of relativistic stars with scalar hairs

We study the stability of relativistic stars in scalar-tensor theories with a nonminimal coupling of the form $F(ϕ)R$, where $F$ depends on a scalar field $ϕ$ and $R$ is the Ricci scalar. On a spherically symmetric and static background, we incorporate a perfect fluid minimally coupled to gravity as a form of the Schutz-Sorkin action. The odd-parity perturbation for the multipoles $l \geq 2$ is ghost-free under the condition $F(ϕ)>0$, with the speed of gravity equivalent to that of light. For even-parity perturbations with $l \geq 2$, there are three propagating degrees of freedom arising from the perfect-fluid, scalar-field, and gravity sectors. For $l=0, 1$, the dynamical degrees of freedom reduce to two modes. We derive no-ghost conditions and the propagation speeds of these perturbations and apply them to concrete theories of hairy relativistic stars with $F(ϕ)>0$. As long as the perfect fluid satisfies a weak energy condition with a positive propagation speed squared $c_m^2$, there are neither ghost nor Laplacian instabilities for theories of spontaneous scalarization and Brans-Dicke (BD) theories with a BD parameter $ω_{\rm BD}>-3/2$ (including $f(R)$ gravity). In these theories, provided $0<c_m^2 \le 1$, we show that all the propagation speeds of even-parity perturbations are sub-luminal inside the star, while the speeds of gravity outside the star are equivalent to that of light.

Massive gravity with non-minimal coupling

We propose new massive gravity theories with 5 dynamical degrees of freedom. We evade uniqueness theorems regarding the form of the kinetic and potential terms by adopting the "generalized massive gravity" framework, where a global translation invariance is broken. By exploiting the rotation symmetry in the field space, we determine two novel classes of theories. The first one is an extension of generalized massive gravity with a non-minimal coupling. On the other hand, the second theory produces a mass term that is different from de Rham, Gabadadze, Tolley construction and trivially has 5 degrees of freedom. Both theories allows for stable cosmological solutions without infinite strong coupling, which are free of ghost and gradient instabilities.

Redshift space distortions in the presence of non-minimally coupled dark matter

In this paper, we fully investigate cosmological scenarios in which dark matter is non-minimally coupled to an extra scalar degree of freedom. The interaction is realized by means of conformal and disformal terms in the transformed gravitational metric. Considering linear perturbation theory, we show that the growth rate of dark matter differs from the uncoupled case and that the well-known Kaiser formula undergoes modification. As a result, redshift space distortion measurements cease to be a direct probe of the linear growth rate of total matter, since the distortion factor has an extra, coupling-dependent term. We study the effect of the coupling in three cosmological models, two conformally and one disformally coupled, and forecast the constraints on the coupling, and other cosmological parameters, from future galaxy surveys.

On Lorentz-invariant spin-2 theories

We construct Lorentz-invariant massless/massive spin-2 theories in flat spacetime. Starting from the most generic action of a rank-2 symmetric tensor field whose Lagrangian contains up to quadratic in first derivatives of a field, we investigate the possibility of new theories by using the Hamiltonian analysis. By imposing the degeneracy of the kinetic matrix and the existence of subsequent constraints, we classify theories based on the number of degrees of freedom and constraint structures and obtain a wider class of Fierz-Pauli theory as well as massless and partially massless theories, whose scalar and/or vector degrees of freedom are absent. We also discuss the relation between our theories and known massless and massive spin-2 theories.

Ghost-free scalar-fermion interactions

We discuss a covariant extension of interactions between scalar fields and fermions in a flat space-time. We show, in a covariant theory, how to evade fermionic ghosts appearing because of the extra degrees of freedom behind a fermionic nature even in the Lagrangian with first derivatives. We will give a concrete example of a quadratic theory with up to the first derivative of multiple scalar fields and a Weyl fermion. We examine not only the maximally degenerate condition, which makes the number of degrees of freedom correct, but also a supplementary condition guaranteeing that the time evolution takes place properly. We also show that proposed derivative interaction terms between scalar fields and a Weyl fermion cannot be removed by field redefinitions.

Stable cosmological solutions in degenerate theory of gravity

We study cosmological applications of extended vector-tensor theories, whose Lagrangians contain up to two derivatives with respect to metric and vector field. We derive background equations under the assumption of homogeneous and isotropic universe and study the nature of cosmological perturbations on top of the background. We found an example of healthy cosmological solutions in non-trivial degenerate theory of gravity for the first time, where those perturbations do not suffer from any instabilities, that is, ghost and gradient instabilities.

Are redshift-space distortions actually a probe of growth of structure?

We present an impact of coupling between dark matter and a scalar field, which might be responsible for dark energy, on measurements of redshift-space distortions. We point out that, in the presence of conformal and/or disformal coupling, linearized continuity and Euler equations for total matter fluid significantly deviate from the standard ones even in the sub-horizon scales. In such a case, a peculiar velocity of total matter field is determined not only by a logarithmic time derivative of its density perturbation but also by density perturbations for both dark matter and baryon, leading to a large modification of the physical interpretation of observed data obtained by measurements of redshift-space distortions. We reformulate galaxy two-point correlation function in the redshift space based on the modified continuity and Euler equations. We conclude from the resultant formula that the true value of the linear growth rate of large-scale structure cannot be necessarily constrained by single-redshift measurements of the redshift-space distortions, unless one observes the actual time-evolution of structure.

Ghost free boson-fermion co-existence system

We study co-existence system of both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. For such system with up to first derivatives in Lagrangian, we find Ostrogradsky-type ghost-free condition in Hamiltonian analysis, which is found to be the same with requiring that the equations of motion of fermions are first-order in Lagrangian formulation. When fermionic degrees of freedom are present, uniqueness of time evolution is not guaranteed a priori because of the Grassmann property. We confirm that the additional condition, which is introduced to close Hamiltonian analysis, also ensures the uniqueness of the time evolution of system.

Extended vector-tensor theories

Recently, several extensions of massive vector theory in curved space-time have been proposed in many literatures. In this paper, we consider the most general vector-tensor theories that contain up to two derivatives with respect to metric and vector field. By imposing a degeneracy condition of the Lagrangian in the context of ADM decomposition of space-time to eliminate an unwanted mode, we construct a new class of massive vector theories where five degrees of freedom can propagate, corresponding to three for massive vector modes and two for massless tensor modes. We find that the generalized Proca and the beyond generalized Proca theories up to the quartic Lagrangian, which should be included in this formulation, are degenerate theories even in curved space-time. Finally, introducing new metric and vector field transformations, we investigate the properties of thus obtained theories under such transformations.
