Latent On-Policy Self-Distillation

Enabling agents to learn from experience and internalize it into their policy has become a central problem in self-evolving AI. On-policy self-distillation (OPSD) offers an effective pathway by using a privileged self-teacher to provide dense supervision on the student's own trajectories; however, existing methods still rely heavily on designer-specified privileged artifacts (e.g., answers, feedback, skills, or trajectories), limiting the end-to-end learnability and scalability required for continual self-improvement. In this work, we introduce Latent On-Policy Self-Distillation (LOPD), which, rather than proposing another hand-crafted OPSD variant with a newly prescribed form of privileged context, makes the teacher's privileged context itself learnable end-to-end from experience. Technically, LOPD retrieves relevant experiences and composes them into continuous latent tokens that condition a self-teacher, while the student generates trajectories from the task and interaction history and receives dense token-level supervision at every visited prefix. We further introduce a privileged-margin objective to stabilize and regulate the learning of latent context. Empirically, LOPD demonstrates (I) strong performance, outperforming RLVR and representative OPSD methods including OPSD, SDPO, and Skill-SD across both agentic tool use and code generation; and (II) high learning efficiency, surpassing GRPO and Skill-SD with less than 30% of their rollout budget. Ablation studies further provide direct evidence that making privileged context learnable is necessary for realizing these gains. Together, these results position LOPD as a step toward a more scalable and self-directed paradigm for agent evolution.

OmniMatBench: A Human-Calibrated Multimodal Reasoning Benchmark Across 19 Materials Science Subfields

As multimodal language models play an increasingly important role in scientific research, materials science offers a critical testbed due to its interdisciplinary, multimodal, and application-driven nature. However, existing materials benchmarks mainly focus on property prediction, knowledge QA, or characterization understanding, leaving the broader reasoning process from materials knowledge to application underexplored. To fill this gap, we present OmniMatBench, a human-calibrated multimodal reasoning benchmark for materials science. OmniMatBench contains 3,171 expert-curated QA and calculation problems across 19 materials-science subfields, spanning fundamental materials knowledge, structural and engineering materials, materials processing and manufacturing, and functional and applied materials. We evaluate 13 open-source and closed-source MLLMs and find that the best model achieves only a 0.372 overall score, revealing a substantial gap in current materials-science reasoning. Further analysis shows strong variation across subfields, fixed reasoning heuristics, uneven materials knowledge, and limited high-level knowledge application under formula-, retrieval-, and code-assisted settings. OmniMatBench provides crucial insights into the capabilities and limitations of current MLLMs and establishes a foundation for reliable AI assistants in materials-science research.

Layer-Guided UAV Tracking: Enhancing Efficiency and Occlusion Robustness

Visual object tracking (VOT) plays a pivotal role in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications. Addressing the trade-off between accuracy and efficiency, especially under challenging conditions like unpredictable occlusion, remains a significant challenge. This paper introduces LGTrack, a unified UAV tracking framework that integrates dynamic layer selection, efficient feature enhancement, and robust representation learning for occlusions. By employing a novel lightweight Global-Grouped Coordinate Attention (GGCA) module, LGTrack captures long-range dependencies and global contexts, enhancing feature discriminability with minimal computational overhead. Additionally, a lightweight Similarity-Guided Layer Adaptation (SGLA) module replaces knowledge distillation, achieving an optimal balance between tracking precision and inference efficiency. Experiments on three datasets demonstrate LGTrack's state-of-the-art real-time speed (258.7 FPS on UAVDT) while maintaining competitive tracking accuracy (82.8\% precision). Automatic Calibration of Mesoscopic Traffic Simulation Using Vehicle Trajectory Data

Traffic simulation models have long been popular in modern traffic planning and operation applications. Efficient calibration of simulation models is usually a crucial step in a simulation study. However, traditional calibration procedures are often resource-intensive and time-consuming, limiting the broader adoption of simulation models. In this study, a vehicle trajectory-based automatic calibration framework for mesoscopic traffic simulation is proposed. The framework incorporates behavior models from both the demand and the supply sides of a traffic network. An optimization-based network flow estimation model is designed for demand and route choice calibration. Dimensionality reduction techniques are incorporated to define the zoning system and the path choice set. A stochastic approximation model is established for capacity and driving behavior parameter calibration. The applicability and performance of the calibration framework are demonstrated through a case study for the City of Birmingham network in Michigan.

Broadband planar electromagnetic hyper-lens with uniform magnification in air

A planar hyper-lens, capable of creating sub-wavelength imaging for broadband electromagnetic wave, is designed based on electromagnetic null medium. Subsequently, a scheme for the implementation of the proposed hyper-lens is given by using well-designed flexural metal plates, which function as the reduced electromagnetic null medium for TM-polarized microwaves. Both simulated and measured results verify that the hyper-lens designed with flexural metal plates can achieve super-resolution imaging for microwave at operating wavelength ({\lambda}0=3cm) with a resolution of 0.25{\lambda}0 and a uniform magnification of about 5. Moreover, the designed hyper-lens ensures that both the object and image surfaces are planes, and simultaneously provides a uniform magnification for objects in different positions. Additionally, the proposed hyper-lens offers a broadband super-resolution imaging capabilities, achieving good super-resolution imaging effects for microwave frequencies ranging from 8.5 to 11 GHz. The proposed hyper-lens may find applications in high precision imaging, detection, and sensing.

Experimental demonstration of a thermal-EM concentrator for enhancing EM signals and converging heat fluxes simultaneously

Simultaneously concentrating EM waves and heat fluxes to the same target region within an on-chip system carries substantial academic research importance and practical application value. Nevertheless, existing researches are primarily aimed at the design and experimentation of concentrators for individual EM waves or temperature fields. In this work, a thermal-EM concentrator, capable of simultaneously concentrating EM waves and heat fluxes, is designed using transformation optics/thermodynamics and fabricated with engineered EM-thermal metamaterials. The concentrating effects of the proposed thermal-EM concentrator on the thermal fluxes and EM waves are verified through numerical simulations and experimental measurements, respectively, which are in good agreement with each other. Both numerically simulated and experimentally measured results demonstrate the concentrating capability of the proposed thermal-EM concentrator, which can concentrate broadband TM-polarized EM waves ranging from 8-12 GHz and heat/cold flows to the same target region within an on-chip operating environment. The thermal-EM concentrator exhibits a thermal focusing efficiency close to 100% and more than three times enhancement of the magnetic field at the designed center frequency of 10 GHz. The proposed thermal-EM concentrator can be utilized for efficient cooling for the specified component and simultaneously enhancing the EM antenna's radiation/reception efficiency within an on-chip system.
