A survey of luminous high-redshift quasars with SDSS and WISE. I. target selection and optical spectroscopy

High-redshift quasars are important tracers of structure and evolution in the early universe. However, they are very rare and difficult to find when using color selection because of contamination from late-type dwarfs. High-redshift quasar surveys based on only optical colors suffer from incompleteness and low identification efficiency, especially at $z\gtrsim4.5$. We have developed a new method to select $4.7\lesssim z \lesssim 5.4$ quasars with both high efficiency and completeness by combining optical and mid-IR Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometric data, and are conducting a luminous $z\sim5$ quasar survey in the whole Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) footprint. We have spectroscopically observed 99 out of 110 candidates with $z$-band magnitudes brighter than 19.5 and 64 (64.6\%) of them are quasars with redshifts of $4.4\lesssim z \lesssim 5.5$ and absolute magnitudes of $-29\lesssim M_{1450} \lesssim -26.4$. In addition, we also observed 14 fainter candidates selected with the same criteria and identified 8 (57.1\%) of them as quasars with $4.7 4.5$, which will set strong constraints on the bright end of the quasar luminosity function. We also expand our method to select quasars at $z\gtrsim5.7$. In this paper we report the discovery of four new luminous $z\gtrsim5.7$ quasars based on SDSS-WISE selection.

Large deviation principle of occupation measures for Non-linear monotone SPDEs

Using the hyper-exponential recurrence criterion, a large deviation principle for the occupation measure is derived for a class of non-linear monotone stochastic partial differential equations. The main results are applied to many concrete SPDEs such as stochastic $p$-Laplace equation, stochastic porous medium equation, stochastic fast-diffusion equation, and even stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $α$-stable noises.

Empirical Research and Automatic Processing Method of Precision-specific Operation

Significant inaccuracy often occurs during the process of mathematical calculation due to the digit limitation of floating point, which may lead to catastrophic loss. Normally, people believe that adjustment of floating-point precision is an effective way to solve this problem, since high-precision floating-point has more digits to store information. Thus, it is a prevalent method to reduce the inaccuracy in much floating-point related research, that performing all the operations with higher precision. However, we discover that some operations may lead to larger error in higher precision. In this paper, we define this kind of operation that generates large error due to precision adjustment a precision-specific operation. Furthermore, we propose a light-weight searching algorithm for detecting precision-specific operations and figure out an automatic processing method to fixing them. In addition, we conducted an experiment on the scientific mathematical library of GLIBC. The result shows that there are many precision-specific operations, and our fixing approach can significantly reduce the inaccuracy.

Large deviation principle of occupation measure for stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $α$-stable noises

We establish a large deviation principle for the occupation measure of the stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $α$-stable noises. The proof is based on a hyper-exponential recurrence criterion. Our result indicates a phenomenon that strong dissipation beats heavy tailed noises to produce a large deviation, it seems to us that this phenomenon has not been reported in the known literatures.

Irreducibility of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation driven by $α$-stable noises and applications

We establish the irreducibility of stochastic real Ginzburg-Landau equation with $α$-stable noises by a maximal inequality and solving a control problem. As applications, we prove that the system converges to its equilibrium measure with exponential rate under a topology stronger than total variation and obeys the moderate deviation principle by constructing some Lyapunov test functions.

An ultra-luminous quasar at z=5.363 with a ten billion solar mass black hole and a Metal-Rich DLA at z~5

We report the discovery of an ultra-luminous quasar J030642.51+185315.8 (hereafter J0306+1853) at redshift 5.363, which hosts a super-massive black hole (SMBH) with $M_{BH} = (1.07 \pm 0.27) \times10^{10}~M_\odot$. With an absolute magnitude $M_{1450}=-28.92$ and bolometric luminosity $L_{bol}\sim3.4\times10^{14} L_{\odot}$, J0306+1853 is one of the most luminous objects in the early Universe. It is not likely to be a beamed source based on its small flux variability, low radio loudness and normal broad emission lines. In addition, a $z=4.986$ Damped Ly$α$ system (DLA) with $\rm [M/H]=-1.3\pm0.1$, among the most metal rich DLAs at $z \gtrsim 5$, is detected in the absorption spectrum of this quasar. This ultra-luminous quasar puts strong constraint on the bright-end of quasar luminosity function and massive-end of black hole mass function. It will provide a unique laboratory to the study of BH growth and the co-evolution between BH and host galaxy with multi-wavelength follow-up observations. The future high resolution spectra will give more insights to the DLA and other absorption systems along the line-of-sight of J0306+1853.

Imaging the cold molecular gas in SDSS J1148 + 5251 at z = 6.4

We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the CO ($J = 2 \rightarrow 1$) line emission towards the $z = 6.419$ quasar SDSS J$114816.64+525150.3$ (J$1148+5251$). The molecular gas is found to be marginally resolved with a major axis of $0.9"$ (consistent with previous size measurements of the CO ($J = 7 \rightarrow 6$) emission). We observe tentative evidence for extended line emission towards the south west on a scale of ~$1.4"$, but this is only detected at $3.3σ$ significance and should be confirmed. The position of the molecular emission region is in excellent agreement with previous detections of low frequency radio continuum emission as well as [C ii] line and thermal dust continuum emission. These CO ($J = 2 \rightarrow 1$) observations provide an anchor for the low excitation part of the molecular line SED. We find no evidence for extended low excitation component, neither in the spectral line energy distribution nor the image. We fit a single kinetic gas temperature model of 50 K. We revisit the gas and dynamical masses in light of this new detection of a low order transition of CO, and confirm previous findings that there is no extended reservoir of cold molecular gas in J$1148+5251$, and that the source departs substantially from the low $z$ relationship between black hole mass and bulge mass. Hence, the characteristics of J$1148+5251$ at $z = 6.419$ are very similar to $z$~$2$ quasars, in the lack of a diffuse cold gas reservoir and kpc-size compactness of the star forming region.

Star formation and the interstellar medium in z>6 UV-luminous Lyman-break galaxies

We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) detections of atomic carbon line and dust continuum emission in two UV-luminous galaxies at redshift 6. The far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of these galaxies are substantially lower than similar starbursts at later cosmic epochs, indicating an evolution in the dust properties with redshift, in agreement with the evolution seen in ultraviolet (UV) attenuation by dust. The [CII] to FIR ratios are found to be higher than at low redshift showing that [CII] should be readily detectable by ALMA within the reionization epoch. One of the two galaxies shows a complex merger nature with the less massive component dominating the UV emission and the more massive component dominating the FIR line and continuum. Using the interstellar atomic carbon line to derive the systemic redshifts we investigate the velocity of Lyman alpha emission emerging from high-z galaxies. In contrast to previous work, we find no evidence for decreasing Lyman alpha velocity shifts at high-redshift. We observe an increase in velocity shifts from z$\sim$2 to z$\sim$6, consistent with the effects of increased IGM absorption.

Log-Sobolev, isoperimetry and transport inequalities on graphs

In this paper, we study some functional inequalities (such as Poincaré inequalities, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, generalized Cheeger isoperimetric inequalities, transportation-information inequalities and transportation-entropy inequalities) for reversible nearest-neighbor Markov processes on a connected finite graph by means of (random) path method. We provide estimates of the involved constants.

Which is conducive to high responsivity in a hybrid graphene-quantum dot transistor: Bulk- or layer- heterojunction

Heterojunction, a photoelectric conversion center, plays a critical role in photo detection. A compare study is performed on field effect phototransistors (FEpT) with two typical heterojunctions based on graphene and PbSe quantum dots (QDs) hybrid, including layer-heterojunction (LH) and bulk-heterojunction (BH). LH-FEpT exhibits a higher mobility (μn) 677 cm2V-1s-1, whereas μn of BH-FEpT is as low as 314 cm2V-1s-1, however the higher responsivity (106 A/W) is achieved by the former. Because R is proportional to the product of mobility and transfer rate, and high transfer rate of LH-FEpT overcompensates the shortage of low mobility. Although large area of heterojunction and high mobility benefit high density of photo-induced carriers, lack of transport mechanism becomes to the main constrain factor in BH-FEpT. Therefore, LH-FEpT is a better candidate of near infrared (NIR) photo detectors.

A comparing study on optoelectronic properties of phototransistors based on MEH-PPV and PbS QD hybrids with bulk- and layer-heterojunction

As the responsivity (R) of a thin film photo detector is proportional to the product of the photo-induced carrier density (n) and mobility (u) (Z. Sun, Z. Liu, J. Li, G.-a. Tai, S. Lau and F. Yan, Adv. Mater., 24, 5878, 2012), which of the types is conducive to photo detection, choosing between layer-heterojunction (LH) and bulk-heterojunction (BH) field effect phototransistors (FEpTs), is still unknown. A comparison study is performed based on an MEH-PPV and PbS QDs hybrid.

Discovery of Eight z ~ 6 Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Overlap Regions

We present the discovery of eight quasars at z~6 identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) overlap regions. Individual SDSS imaging runs have some overlap with each other, leading to repeat observations over an area spanning >4000 deg^2 (more than 1/4 of the total footprint). These overlap regions provide a unique dataset that allows us to select high-redshift quasars more than 0.5 mag fainter in the z band than those found with the SDSS single-epoch data. Our quasar candidates were first selected as i-band dropout objects in the SDSS imaging database. We then carried out a series of follow-up observations in the optical and near-IR to improve photometry, remove contaminants, and identify quasars. The eight quasars reported here were discovered in a pilot study utilizing the overlap regions at high galactic latitude (|b|>30 deg). These quasars span a redshift range of 5.86<z<6.06 and a flux range of 19.3<z_AB<20.6 mag. Five of them are fainter than z_AB=20 mag, the typical magnitude limit of z~6 quasars used for the SDSS single-epoch images. In addition, we recover eight previously known quasars at z~6 that are located in the overlap regions. These results validate our procedure for selecting quasar candidates from the overlap regions and confirming them with follow-up observations, and provide guidance to a future systematic survey over all SDSS imaging regions with repeat observations.

An ultra-luminous quasar with a twelve-billion-solar-mass black hole at redshift 6.30

So far, roughly 40 quasars with redshifts greater than z=6 have been discovered. Each quasar contains a black hole with a mass of about one billion solar masses ($10^9 M_\odot$). The existence of such black holes when the Universe was less than 1 billion years old presents substantial challenges to theories of the formation and growth of black holes and the coevolution of black holes and galaxies. Here we report the discovery of an ultra-luminous quasar, SDSS J010013.02+280225.8, at redshift z=6.30. It has an optical and near-infrared luminosity a few times greater than those of previously known z>6 quasars. On the basis of the deep absorption trough on the blue side of the Ly $α$ emission line in the spectrum, we estimate the proper size of the ionized proximity zone associated with the quasar to be 26 million light years, larger than found with other z>6.1 quasars with lower luminosities. We estimate (on the basis of a near-infrared spectrum) that the black hole has a mass of $\sim 1.2 \times 10^{10} M_\odot$, which is consistent with the $1.3 \times 10^{10} M_\odot$ derived by assuming an Eddington-limited accretion rate.

Asymptotics of the entropy production rate for $d$-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes

In the context of non-equilibrium statistical physics, the entropy production rate is an important concept to describe how far a specific state of a system is from its equilibrium state. In this paper, we establish a central limit theorem and a moderate deviation principle for the entropy production rate of $d$-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, by the techniques of functional inequalities such as Poincaré inequality and log-Sobolev inequality. As an application, we obtain a law of iterated logarithm for the entropy production rate.

Black Hole Mass Estimates and Rapid Growth of Supermassive Black Holes in Luminous $z \sim$ 3.5 Quasars

We present new near-infrared (IR) observations of the H$β \lambda4861$ and MgII $\lambda2798$ lines for 32 luminous quasars with $3.2<z<3.9$ using the Palomar Hale 200 inch telescope and the Large Binocular Telescope. We find that the MgII Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) is well correlated with the H$β$ FWHM, confirming itself as a good substitute for the H$β$ FWHM in the black hole mass estimates. The continuum luminosity at 5100 Å well correlates with the continuum luminosity at 3000 Å and the broad emission line luminosities (H$β$ and MgII). With simultaneous near-IR spectroscopy of the H$β$ and MgII lines to exclude the influences of flux variability, we are able to evaluate the reliability of estimating black hole masses based on the MgII line for high redshift quasars. With the reliable H$β$ line based black hole mass and Eddington ratio estimates, we find that the $z\sim3.5$ quasars in our sample have black hole masses $1.90\times10^{9} M_{\odot} \lesssim M_{\rm BH} \lesssim 1.37\times10^{10} M_{\odot}$, with a median of $\sim 5.14\times10^{9} M_{\odot}$ and are accreting at Eddington ratios between 0.30 and 3.05, with a median of $\sim1.12$. Assuming a duty cycle of 1 and a seed black hole mass of $10^{4} M_{\odot}$, we show that the $z\sim3.5$ quasars in this sample can grow to their estimated black hole masses within the age of the Universe at their redshifts.
