Coulomb Branch Quantization and Abelianized Monopole Bubbling

We develop an approach to the study of Coulomb branch operators in 3D $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories and the associated quantization structure of their Coulomb branches. This structure is encoded in a one-dimensional TQFT subsector of the full 3D theory, which we describe by combining several techniques and ideas. The answer takes the form of an associative and noncommutative star product algebra on the Coulomb branch. For `good' and `ugly' theories (according to the Gaiotto-Witten classification), we also exhibit a trace map on this algebra, which allows for the computation of correlation functions and, in particular, guarantees that the star product satisfies a truncation condition. This work extends previous work on abelian theories to the non-abelian case by quantifying the monopole bubbling that describes screening of GNO boundary conditions. In our approach, monopole bubbling is determined from the algebraic consistency of the OPE. This also yields a physical proof of the Bullimore-Dimofte-Gaiotto abelianization description of the Coulomb branch.

The Analytic Bootstrap for Large $N$ Chern-Simons Vector Models

Three-dimensional Chern-Simons vector models display an approximate higher spin symmetry in the large $N$ limit. Their single-trace operators consist of a tower of weakly broken currents, as well as a scalar $σ$ of approximate twist $1$ or $2$. We study the consequences of crossing symmetry for the four-point correlator of $σ$ in a $1/N$ expansion, using analytic bootstrap techniques. To order $1/N$ we show that crossing symmetry fixes the contribution from the tower of currents, providing an alternative derivation of well-known results by Maldacena and Zhiboedov. When $σ$ has twist $1$ its OPE receives a contribution from the exchange of $σ$ itself with an arbitrary coefficient, due to the existence of a marginal sextic coupling. We develop the machinery to determine the corrections to the OPE data of double-trace operators due to this, and to similar exchanges. This in turns allows us to fix completely the correlator up to three known truncated solutions to crossing. We then proceed to study the problem to order $1/N^2$. We find that crossing implies the appearance of odd-twist double-trace operators, and calculate their OPE coefficients in a large spin expansion. Also, surprisingly, crossing at order $1/N^2$, implies non-trivial $O(1/N)$ anomalous dimensions for even-twist double-trace operators, even though such contributions do not appear in the four-point function at order $1/N$ (in the case where there is no scalar exchange). We argue that this phenomenon arises due to operator mixing. Finally, we analyse the bosonic vector model with a sextic coupling without gauge interactions, and determine the order $1/N^2$ corrections to the dimensions of twist-$2$ double-trace operators.

Scalar Correlators in Bosonic Chern-Simons Vector Models

We consider the planar limit of Chern-Simons theories coupled to a scalar $ϕ$ in the fundamental representation of a $U(N)_k$ gauge group, at both the regular and Wilson-Fisher conformal points. These theories have one single-trace scalar operator $J_0=ϕ^{\dagger}ϕ$. We calculate its connected planar $n$-point functions, when all the external momenta are collinear. More specifically, we derive an algebraic recurrence relation that expresses each such $n$-point function in terms of lower-point ones. As an application, we study the four-point function, which was recently shown to be completely fixed up to three truncated solutions to the conformal bootstrap. We show that those truncated solutions do not contribute in our bosonic Chern-Simons theories. The result matches a recent calculation of the four-point function in Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fermion, providing a new test of 3d bosonization duality.

A one-dimensional theory for Higgs branch operators

We use supersymmetric localization to calculate correlation functions of half-BPS local operators in 3d ${\cal N} = 4$ superconformal field theories whose Lagrangian descriptions consist of vectormultiplets coupled to hypermultiplets. The operators we primarily study are certain twisted linear combinations of Higgs branch operators that can be inserted anywhere along a given line. These operators are constructed from the hypermultiplet scalars. They form a one-dimensional non-commutative operator algebra with topological correlation functions. The 2- and 3-point functions of Higgs branch operators in the full 3d ${\cal N}=4$ theory can be simply inferred from the 1d topological algebra. After conformally mapping the 3d superconformal field theory from flat space to a round three-sphere, we preform supersymmetric localization using a supercharge that does not belong to any 3d ${\cal N} = 2$ subalgebra of the ${\cal N}=4$ algebra. The result is a simple model that can be used to calculate correlation functions in the 1d topological algebra mentioned above. This model is a 1d Gaussian theory coupled to a matrix model, and it can be viewed as a gauge-fixed version of a topological gauged quantum mechanics. Our results generalize to non-conformal theories on $S^3$ that contain real mass and Fayet-Iliopolous parameters. We also provide partial results in the 1d topological algebra associated with the Coulomb branch, where we calculate correlation functions of local operators built from the vectormultiplet scalars.

Coulomb Branch Operators and Mirror Symmetry in Three Dimensions

We develop new techniques for computing exact correlation functions of a class of local operators, including certain monopole operators, in three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 4$ abelian gauge theories that have superconformal infrared limits. These operators are position-dependent linear combinations of Coulomb branch operators. They form a one-dimensional topological sector that encodes a deformation quantization of the Coulomb branch chiral ring, and their correlation functions completely fix the ($n\leq 3$)-point functions of all half-BPS Coulomb branch operators. Using these results, we provide new derivations of the conformal dimension of half-BPS monopole operators as well as new and detailed tests of mirror symmetry. Our main approach involves supersymmetric localization on a hemisphere $HS^3$ with half-BPS boundary conditions, where operator insertions within the hemisphere are represented by certain shift operators acting on the $HS^3$ wavefunction. By gluing a pair of such wavefunctions, we obtain correlators on $S^3$ with an arbitrary number of operator insertions. Finally, we show that our results can be recovered by dimensionally reducing the Schur index of 4D $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories decorated by BPS 't Hooft-Wilson loops.

Bootstrapping 3D Fermions

We study the conformal bootstrap for a 4-point function of fermions $\langleψψψψ\rangle$ in 3D. We first introduce an embedding formalism for 3D spinors and compute the conformal blocks appearing in fermion 4-point functions. Using these results, we find general bounds on the dimensions of operators appearing in the $ψ\times ψ$ OPE, and also on the central charge $C_T$. We observe features in our bounds that coincide with scaling dimensions in the Gross-Neveu models at large $N$. We also speculate that other features could coincide with a fermionic CFT containing no relevant scalar operators.

Fermion-Scalar Conformal Blocks

We compute the conformal blocks associated with scalar-scalar-fermion-fermion 4-point functions in 3D CFTs. Together with the known scalar conformal blocks, our result completes the task of determining the so-called `seed blocks' in three dimensions. Conformal blocks associated with 4-point functions of operators with arbitrary spins can now be determined from these seed blocks by using known differential operators.

Bootstrapping $O(N)$ Vector Models with Four Supercharges in $3 \leq d \leq4$

We analyze the conformal bootstrap constraints in theories with four supercharges and a global $O(N) \times U(1)$ flavor symmetry in $3 \leq d \leq 4$ dimensions. In particular, we consider the 4-point function of $O(N)$-fundamental chiral operators $Z_i$ that have no chiral primary in the $O(N)$-singlet sector of their OPE. We find features in our numerical bounds that nearly coincide with the theory of $N+1$ chiral super-fields with superpotential $W = X \sum_{i=1}^N Z_i^2$, as well as general bounds on SCFTs where $\sum_{i=1}^N Z_i^2$ vanishes in the chiral ring.

Three Dimensional Bosonization From Supersymmetry

Three dimensional bosonization is a conjectured duality between non-supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories coupled to matter fields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. There is a well-established supersymmetric version of this duality, which involves Chern-Simons theories with ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetry coupled to fundamental chiral multiplets. Assuming that the supersymmetric duality is valid, we prove that non-supersymmetric bosonization holds for all planar correlators of single-trace operators. The main tool we employ is a double-trace flow from the supersymmetric theory to an IR fixed point, in which the scalars and fermions are effectively decoupled in the planar limit. A generalization of this technique can be used to derive the duality mapping of all renormalizable couplings, in non-supersymmetric theories with both a scalar and a fermion. Our results do not rely on an explicit computation of planar diagrams.

Accidental Symmetries and the Conformal Bootstrap

We study an ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric generalization of the three-dimensional critical $O(N)$ vector model that is described by $N+1$ chiral superfields with superpotential $W = g_1 X \sum_i Z_i^2 + g_2 X^3$. By combining the tools of the conformal bootstrap with results obtained through supersymmetric localization, we argue that this model exhibits a symmetry enhancement at the infrared superconformal fixed point due to $g_2$ flowing to zero. This example is special in that the existence of an infrared fixed point with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$, which does not exhibit symmetry enhancement, does not generally lead to any obvious unitarity violations or other inconsistencies. We do show, however, that the $F$-theorem excludes the models with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ for $N>5$. The conformal bootstrap provides a stronger constraint and excludes such models for $N>2$. We provide evidence that the $g_2=0$ models, which have the enhanced $O(N)\times U(1)$ symmetry, come close to saturating the bootstrap bounds. We extend our analysis to fractional dimensions where we can motivate the nonexistence of the $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ models by studying them perturbatively in the $4-ε$ expansion.

Bootstrapping $O(N)$ Vector Models in $4<d<6$

We use the conformal bootstrap to study conformal field theories with $O(N)$ global symmetry in $d=5$ and $d=5.95$ spacetime dimensions that have a scalar operator $ϕ_i$ transforming as an $O(N)$ vector. The crossing symmetry of the four-point function of this $O(N)$ vector operator, along with unitarity assumptions, determine constraints on the scaling dimensions of conformal primary operators in the $ϕ_i \times ϕ_j$ OPE. Imposing a lower bound on the second smallest scaling dimension of such an $O(N)$-singlet conformal primary, and varying the scaling dimension of the lowest one, we obtain an allowed region that exhibits a kink located very close to the interacting $O(N)$-symmetric CFT conjectured to exist recently by Fei, Giombi, and Klebanov. Under reasonable assumptions on the dimension of the second lowest $O(N)$ singlet in the $ϕ_i \times ϕ_j$ OPE, we observe that this kink disappears in $d =5$ for small enough $N$, suggesting that in this case an interacting $O(N)$ CFT may cease to exist for $N$ below a certain critical value.

Bounds on $\mathcal{N}=1$ Superconformal Theories with Global Symmetries

Recently, the conformal-bootstrap has been successfully used to obtain generic bounds on the spectrum and OPE coefficients of unitary conformal field theories. In practice, these bounds are obtained by assuming the existence of a scalar operator in the theory and analyzing the crossing-symmetry constraints of its 4-point function. In $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal theories with a global symmetry there is always a scalar primary operator, which is the top of the current-multiplet. In this paper we analyze the crossing-symmetry constraints of the 4-point function of this operator for $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories with $SU(N)$ global symmetry. We analyze the current-current OPE, and derive the superconformal blocks, generalizing the work of Fortin, Intrilligator and Stergiou to the non-Abelian case and finding new superconformal blocks which appear in the Abelian case. We then use these results to obtain bounds on the coefficient of the current 2-point function.

Exact Correlators of BPS Operators from the 3d Superconformal Bootstrap

We use the superconformal bootstrap to derive exact relations between OPE coefficients in three-dimensional superconformal field theories with ${\cal N} \geq 4$ supersymmetry. These relations follow from a consistent truncation of the crossing symmetry equations that is associated with the cohomology of a certain supercharge. In ${\cal N} = 4$ SCFTs, the non-trivial cohomology classes are in one-to-one correspondence with certain half-BPS operators, provided that these operators are restricted to lie on a line. The relations we find are powerful enough to allow us to determine an infinite number of OPE coefficients in the interacting SCFT ($U(2)_2 \times U(1)_{-2}$ ABJ theory) that constitutes the IR limit of $O(3)$ ${\cal N} = 8$ super-Yang-Mills theory. More generally, in ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs with a unique stress tensor, we are led to conjecture that many superconformal multiplets allowed by group theory must actually be absent from the spectrum, and we test this conjecture in known ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs using the superconformal index. For generic ${\cal N} = 8$ SCFTs, we also improve on numerical bootstrap bounds on OPE coefficients of short and semi-short multiplets and discuss their relation to the exact relations between OPE coefficients we derived. In particular, we show that the kink previously observed in these bounds arises from the disappearance of a certain quarter-BPS multiplet, and that the location of the kink is likely tied to the existence of the $U(2)_2 \times U(1)_{-2}$ ABJ theory, which can be argued to not possess this multiplet.

The ${\cal N} = 8$ Superconformal Bootstrap in Three Dimensions

We analyze the constraints imposed by unitarity and crossing symmetry on the four-point function of the stress-tensor multiplet of ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories in three dimensions. We first derive the superconformal blocks by analyzing the superconformal Ward identity. Our results imply that the OPE of the primary operator of the stress-tensor multiplet with itself must have parity symmetry. We then analyze the relations between the crossing equations, and we find that these equations are mostly redundant. We implement the independent crossing constraints numerically and find bounds on OPE coefficients and operator dimensions as a function of the stress-tensor central charge. To make contact with known ${\cal N}=8$ superconformal field theories, we compute this central charge in a few particular cases using supersymmetric localization. For limiting values of the central charge, our numerical bounds are nearly saturated by the large $N$ limit of ABJM theory and also by the free $U(1)\times U(1)$ ABJM theory.

The Thermal Free Energy in Large N Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

We compute the thermal free energy in large N U(N) Chern-Simons-matter theories with matter fields (scalars and/or fermions) in the fundamental representation, in the large temperature limit. We note that in these theories the eigenvalue distribution of the holonomy of the gauge field along the thermal circle does not localize even at very high temperatures, and this affects the computation significantly. We verify that our results are consistent with the conjectured dualities between Chern-Simons-matter theories with scalar fields and with fermion fields, as well as with the strong-weak coupling duality of the N=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theory.

Correlators of Large N Fermionic Chern-Simons Vector Models

We consider the large N limit of three-dimensional U(N)_k Chern-Simons theory coupled to a Dirac fermion in the fundamental representation. In this limit, we compute several correlators to all orders in the `t Hooft coupling N/k. It was suggested recently that this theory is dual to the Legendre-transformed theory of scalar fields coupled to Chern-Simons gauge interactions. Our results show that this duality holds for any value of the `t Hooft coupling, at least at the level of the planar 3-point functions. In addition, we determine the sign in the duality transformation of the Chern-Simons level, as well as the relation between the "triple-trace" deformation which exists in the bosonic Chern-Simons theory and in the Legendre-transformed fermionic theory.

Correlation Functions of Large N Chern-Simons-Matter Theories and Bosonization in Three Dimensions

We consider the conformal field theory of N complex massless scalars in 2+1 dimensions, coupled to a U(N) Chern-Simons theory at level k. This theory has a 't Hooft large N limit, keeping fixed λ= N/k. We compute some correlation functions in this theory exactly as a function of λ, in the large N (planar) limit. We show that the results match with the general predictions of Maldacena and Zhiboedov for the correlators of theories that have high-spin symmetries in the large N limit. It has been suggested in the past that this theory is dual (in the large N limit) to the Legendre transform of the theory of fermions coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field, and our results allow us to find the precise mapping between the two theories. We find that in the large N limit the theory of N scalars coupled to a U(N)_k Chern-Simons theory is equivalent to the Legendre transform of the theory of k fermions coupled to a U(k)_N Chern-Simons theory, thus providing a bosonization of the latter theory. We conjecture that perhaps this duality is valid also for finite values of N and k, where on the fermionic side we should now have (for N_f flavors) a U(k)_{N-N_f/2} theory. Similar results hold for real scalars (fermions) coupled to the O(N)_k Chern-Simons theory.

d=3 Bosonic Vector Models Coupled to Chern-Simons Gauge Theories

We study three dimensional O(N)_k and U(N)_k Chern-Simons theories coupled to a scalar field in the fundamental representation, in the large N limit. For infinite k this is just the singlet sector of the O(N) (U(N)) vector model, which is conjectured to be dual to Vasiliev's higher spin gravity theory on AdS_4. For large k and N we obtain a parity-breaking deformation of this theory, controlled by the 't Hooft coupling lambda = 4 πN / k. For infinite N we argue (and show explicitly at two-loop order) that the theories with finite lambda are conformally invariant, and also have an exactly marginal (ϕ^2)^3 deformation. For large but finite N and small 't Hooft coupling lambda, we show that there is still a line of fixed points parameterized by the 't Hooft coupling lambda. We show that, at infinite N, the interacting non-parity-invariant theory with finite lambda has the same spectrum of primary operators as the free theory, consisting of an infinite tower of conserved higher-spin currents and a scalar operator with scaling dimension Δ=1; however, the correlation functions of these operators do depend on lambda. Our results suggest that there should exist a family of higher spin gravity theories, parameterized by lambda, and continuously connected to Vasiliev's theory. For finite N the higher spin currents are not conserved.
