Secrecy Outage of Dual-hop Regenerative Multi-relay System with Relay Selection

Relay selection is considered to enhance the secrecy of a dual-hop regenerative multi-relay system with an eavesdropper. Without assuming perfect decoding at the relays, the secrecy outage probability of a single relay system is obtained first. Secrecy outage of optimal, traditional and suboptimal relay selection schemes is then evaluated. To reduce the power consumption, partial relay selection schemes based only on either of the source-relay or relay-destination instantaneous channel state information (ICSI) are introduced. Its secrecy outage is evaluated and compared with the other schemes. Secrecy outage of all the selection schemes are obtained in closed-form. An optimal relay selection scheme is proposed using secrecy outage which does not require any ICSI. Asymptotic and diversity gain analysis of the secrecy outage is presented when source-relay and relay-destination average SNRs are same or different. We observe that the improvement in eavesdropper link quality affects the secrecy outage more when required secrecy rate is low as compared to the case when rate is high. We also observe that relay selection improves performance more when number of relays are more. It is important to note that either of the source-relay or the relay-destination link quality can equally limit the secrecy outage performance even if the other link quality is infinitely good.

QoS-aware Stochastic Spatial PLS Model for Analysing Secrecy Performance under Eavesdropping and Jamming

Securing wireless communication, being inherently vulnerable to eavesdropping and jamming attacks, becomes more challenging in resource-constrained networks like Internet-of-Things. Towards this, physical layer security (PLS) has gained significant attention due to its low complexity. In this paper, we address the issue of random inter-node distances in secrecy analysis and develop a comprehensive quality-of-service (QoS) aware PLS framework for the analysis of both eavesdropping and jamming capabilities of attacker. The proposed solution covers spatially stochastic deployment of legitimate nodes and attacker. We characterise the secrecy outage performance against both attacks using inter-node distance based probabilistic distribution functions. The model takes into account the practical limits arising out of underlying QoS requirements, which include the maximum distance between legitimate users driven by transmit power and receiver sensitivity. A novel concept of eavesdropping zone is introduced, and relative impact of jamming power is investigated. Closed-form expressions for asymptotic secrecy outage probability are derived offering insights into design of optimal system parameters for desired security level against the attacker's capability of both attacks. Analytical framework, validated by numerical results, establishes that the proposed solution offers potentially accurate characterisation of the PLS performance and key design perspective from point-of-view of both legitimate user and attacker.

Optimal Green Hybrid Attacks in Secure IoT

In pursuance to understand the behavior of a potential green hybrid attacker in secure internet-of-things (IoT), this letter investigates optimal energy utilization from the attacker's viewpoint. Specifically, we propose a novel framework for optimizing the efficacy of a hybrid attacker, possessing capability to both eavesdrop and jam, while considering the underlying energy consumption. In particular, we maximize the attacker energy efficiency (AEE) in secure IoT by deriving the analytical solutions for jointly global-optimal attacking mode, eavesdropping rate, and jamming power. Numerical results, validating analytical claims, reveal that the proposed green design can offer about 45% improvement in average AEE over the relevant benchmarks.

Analyzing CDR/IPDR data to find People Network from Encrypted Messaging Services

Criminals are increasingly using mobile based communication applications, like WhatsApp, that have end-to-end encryption to connect to each other. This makes traditional analysis of call graphs, or traffic analysis, virtually impossible and so is a hindrance for law enforcement personnel. Old methods of traffic analysis have been rendered useless and criminals, including arms dealers and terrorists, are able to engage in criminal activity undetected by police. At present, law enforcement must use extensive manual effort to parse data provided by cell companies to extract information. We have built a system that analyses cellular GPRS metadata and builds a profile and finds potential call connections explicitly which are implicit in the dataset. This paper describes our approach and system in detail and includes results of our evaluation using an anonymized dataset from Delhi Police. Our system permits call graph analysis to be done, and significantly reduces the time needed from the data analysis process.

Effects of CSI Knowledge on Secrecy of Threshold-Selection Decode-and-Forward Relaying

This paper considers secrecy of a three node cooperative wireless system in the presence of a passive eavesdropper. The threshold-selection decode-and-forward (DF) relay is considered, which can decode the source message correctly only if a predefined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is achieved. The effects of channel state information (CSI) availability on secrecy outage probability (SOP) and ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) are investigated, and closed-form expressions are derived. Diversity is achieved from the direct and relaying paths both at the destination and at the eavesdropper by combinations of maximal-ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC) schemes. An asymptotic analysis is provided when each hop SNR is the same in the balanced case and when it is different in the unbalanced case. The analysis shows that both hops can be a bottleneck for secure communication; however, they do not affect the secrecy identically. While it is observed that CSI knowledge can improve secrecy, the amount of improvement for SOP is more when the required rate is low and for ESR when the operating SNR is also low. It is also shown that the source to eavesdropper link SNR is more crucial for secure communication.

Energy-Aware Relay Selection and Power Allocation for Multiple-User Cooperative Networks

This paper investigates the relay assignment and power allocation problem for two different network power management policies: group lifetime maximization (GLM) and minimum weighted total power (MWTP), with the aim of lifetime maximization in symbol error rate (SER) constrained multipleuser cooperative network. With optimal power allocation solution obtained for each policy, we show that the optimal relay assignment can be obtained using bottleneck matching (BM) algorithm and minimum weighted matching (MWM) algorithm for GLM and MWTP policies, respectively. Since relay assignment with BM algorithm is not power efficient, we propose a novel minimum bottleneck matching (MBM) algorithm to solve the relay assignment problem optimally for GLM policy. To further reduce the complexity of the relay assignment, we propose suboptimal relay selection (SRS) algorithm which has linear complexity in number of source and relay nodes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed relay selection and power allocation strategies based on GLM policy have better network lifetime performance over the strategies based on MWTP policy. Compared to the MBM and SRS algorithm, relay assignment based on BM algorithm for GLM policy has inferior network lifetime performance at low update interval. We show that relay assignment based on MBM algorithm achieves maximum network lifetime performance and relay assignment with SRS algorithm has performance very close to it.
