Crystalline color superconductors

Inhomogeneous superconductors and inhomogeneous superfluids appear in a variety of contexts including quark matter at extreme densities, fermionic systems of cold atoms, type-II cuprates, and organic superconductors. In the present review the focus is on properties of quark matter at high baryonic density, which may exist in the interior of compact stars. The conditions realized in these stellar objects tend to disfavor standard symmetric BCS pairing and may favor an inhomogeneous color superconducting phase. The properties of inhomogeneous color superconductors are discussed in detail and in particular of crystalline color superconductors. The possible astrophysical signatures associated with the presence of crystalline color superconducting phases within the core of compact stars are also reviewed.

Quark Matter in a Strong Magnetic Background

In this chapter, we discuss several aspects of the theory of strong interactions in presence of a strong magnetic background. In particular, we summarize our results on the effect of the magnetic background on chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement at finite temperature. Moreover, we compute the magnetic susceptibility of the chiral condensate and the quark polarization at zero temperature. Our theoretical framework is given by chiral models: the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL), the Polyakov improved NJL (or PNJL) and the Quark-Meson (QM) models. We also compare our results with the ones obtained by other groups.

Hot Quark Matter with an Axial Chemical Potential

We analyze the phase diagram of hot quark matter in presence of an axial chemical potential, $μ_5$. The latter is introduced to mimic the chirality transitions induced, in hot Quantum Chromodynamics, by the strong sphaleron configurations. In particular, we study the curvature of the critical line at small $μ_5$, the effects of a finite quark mass and of a vector interaction. Moreover, we build the mixed phase at the first order phase transition line, and draw the phase diagram in the chiral density and temperature plane. We finally compute the full topological susceptibility in presence of a background of topological charge.

Deconfinement and Chiral Symmetry Restoration in a Strong Magnetic Background

We perform a model study of deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration in a strong magnetic background. We use a Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop, taking into account a possible dependence of the coupling on the Polyakov loop expectation value, as suggested by the recent literature. Our main result is that, within this model, the deconfinement and chiral crossovers of QCD in strong magnetic field are entangled even at the largest value of $eB$ considered here, namely $eB=30 m_π^2$ (that is, $B \approx 6\times 10^{15}$ Tesla). The amount of split that we measure is, at this value of $eB$, of the order of 2%. We also study briefly the role of the 8-quark term on the entanglement of the two crossovers. We then compare the phase diagram of this model with previous results, as well as with available Lattice data.

Dressed Polyakov loop and phase diagram of hot quark matter under magnetic field

We evaluate the dressed Polyakov loop for hot quark matter in strong magnetic field. To compute the finite temperature effective potential, we use the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with eight-quark interactions taken into account. The bare quark mass is adjusted in order to reproduce the physical value of the vacuum pion mass. Our results show that the dressed Polyakov loop is very sensitive to the strenght of the magnetic field, and it is capable to capture both the deconfinement crossover and the chiral crossover. Besides, we compute self-consistently the phase diagram of the model. We find a tiny split of the two aforementioned crossovers as the strength of the magnetic field is increased. Concretely, for the largest value of magnetic field investigated here, $eB=19 m_π^2$, the split is of the order of $10\%$. A qualitative comparison with other effective models and recent Lattice results is also performed.

Chiral magnetic effect in the PNJL model

We study the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop (PNJL model) in the presence of a strong magnetic field and a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ which mimics the effect of imbalanced chirality due to QCD instanton and/or sphaleron transitions. Firstly we focus on the properties of chiral symmetry breaking and deconfinement crossover under the strong magnetic field. Then we discuss the role of $μ_5$ on the phase structure. Finally the chirality charge, electric current, and their susceptibility, which are relevant to the Chiral Magnetic Effect, are computed in the model.

Analytic Lyapunov exponents in a classical nonlinear field equation

It is shown that the nonlinear wave equation $\partial_t^2ϕ- \partial^2_x ϕ-μ_0\partial_x(\partial_xϕ)^3 =0$, which is the continuum limit of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) beta model, has a positive Lyapunov exponent lambda_1, whose analytic energy dependence is given. The result (a first example for field equations) is achieved by evaluating the lattice-spacing dependence of lambda_1 for the FPU model within the framework of a Riemannian description of Hamiltonian chaos. We also discuss a difficulty of the statistical mechanical treatment of this classical field system, which is absent in the dynamical description.

Geometric approach to chaos in the classical dynamics of abelian lattice gauge theory

A Riemannian geometrization of dynamics is used to study chaoticity in the classical Hamiltonian dynamics of a U(1) lattice gauge theory. This approach allows one to obtain analytical estimates of the largest Lyapunov exponent in terms of time averages of geometric quantities. These estimates are compared with the results of numerical simulations, and turn out to be very close to the values extrapolated for very large lattice sizes even when the geometric quantities are computed using small lattices. The scaling of the Lyapunov exponent with the energy density is found to be well described by a quadratic power law.

Geometry of dynamics and phase transitions in classical lattice phi^4 theories

We perform a microcanonical study of classical lattice phi^4 field models in 3 dimensions with O(n) symmetries. The Hamiltonian flows associated to these systems that undergo a second order phase transition in the thermodynamic limit are here investigated. The microscopic Hamiltonian dynamics neatly reveals the presence of a phase transition through the time averages of conventional thermodynamical observables. Moreover, peculiar behaviors of the largest Lyapunov exponents at the transition point are observed. A Riemannian geometrization of Hamiltonian dynamics is then used to introduce other relevant observables, that are measured as functions of both energy density and temperature. On the basis of a simple and abstract geometric model, we suggest that the apparently singular behaviour of these geometric observables might probe a major topological change of the manifolds whose geodesics are the natural motions.

Chaos in effective classical and quantum dynamics

We investigate the dynamics of classical and quantum N-component phi^4 oscillators in the presence of an external field. In the large N limit the effective dynamics is described by two-degree-of-freedom classical Hamiltonian systems. In the classical model we observe chaotic orbits for any value of the external field, while in the quantum case chaos is strongly suppressed. A simple explanation of this behaviour is found in the change in the structure of the orbits induced by quantum corrections. Consistently with Heisenberg's principle, quantum fluctuations are forced away from zero, removing in the effective quantum dynamics a hyperbolic fixed point that is a major source of chaos in the classical model.
