Les Houches 2023 -- Physics at TeV Colliders: Report on the Standard Model Precision Wishlist

Les Houches returned to an in-person format in 2023 and the bi-yearly tradition of updating the standard model precision wishlist has continued. In this work we review recent progress (since Les Houches 2021) in fixed-order computations for LHC applications. In addition, necessary ingredients for such calculations such as parton distribution functions, amplitudes, and subtraction methods are discussed. Finally, we indicate processes and missing higher-order corrections that are required to reach the theoretical accuracy that matches the anticipated experimental precision.

Integrated subtraction terms and finite remainders for arbitrary processes with massless partons at colliders in the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme

We present integrated subtraction terms and finite remainders for arbitrary processes with massless partons at hadron and lepton colliders in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme. These results provide the very last ingredients needed to make this scheme a fully local, analytic and process-independent framework for treating infrared singularities at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The explicit infrared finiteness of all required contributions, as well as their process-independence, puts these results on par with subtraction schemes developed for next-to-leading order computations and opens up a clear path towards the automation of next-to-next-to-leading order computations in QCD.

Theoretical modeling of QCD radiation in off-shell Higgs production through gluon fusion

The measurement of the Higgs boson width is a critical test of the Standard Model, with significant implications for understanding electroweak symmetry breaking. Direct measurements are limited by detector resolution, but it can be measured with greater precision through a combined analysis of on-shell and off-shell Higgs boson production. While results for on-shell production have been computed to a very high accuracy, theoretical predictions for off-shell Higgs boson production are not as well controlled due to the breakdown of the heavy-top approximation and the large interference with non-resonant amplitudes. Seeking to understand and improve the theoretical control, we compare leading-order and next-to-leading-order plus parton shower differential cross-sections for signal, background, and full physical processes in off-shell Higgs boson production at the Large Hadron Collider, using Powheg, MadGraph, and Sherpa. We analyze the impact of higher-order quantum chromodynamics effects and theoretical uncertainties, highlighting differences between predictions using jet merging with parton showers, and those from next-to-leading order computations matched to parton showers. The results provide insights for improving theoretical predictions and their application to experimental measurements in the future.

A fresh look at the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme: NNLO QCD corrections to $N$-gluon final states in $q\bar{q}$ annihilation

We describe how the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme [1] can be used to compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the production of an arbitrary number of gluonic jets in hadron collisions. We show that the infrared subtraction terms can be combined into recurring structures that in many cases are simple iterations of those terms known from next-to-leading order. The way that these recurring structures are identified and computed is fairly general, and can be applied to any partonic process. As an example, we explicitly demonstrate the cancellation of all singularities in the fully-differential cross section for the $q\bar{q} \to X + N g $ process at NNLO in QCD. The finite remainder of the NNLO QCD contribution, which arises upon cancellation of all $ε$-poles, is expressed via relatively simple formulas, which can be implemented in a numerical code in a straightforward way. Our approach can be extended to describe arbitrary processes at NNLO in QCD; the largest remaining challenge at this point is the combinatorics of quark and gluon collinear limits.

Towards a general subtraction formula for NNLO QCD corrections to processes at hadron colliders: final states with quarks and gluons

We describe the calculation of integrated subtraction terms in the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme for hadron collider processes with quarks and gluons, thereby extending the results presented in Ref.$~$[1]. Although this extension eventually proves to be straightforward, it requires a more careful treatment of certain collinear limits to achieve a compact and physically-transparent final result. We also show that the cancellation of infrared divergences can be organized in such a way that, once soft contributions are removed, it occurs independently for each of the external partons. We consider these results to be important stepping stones on the way to deriving finite remainders of the integrated subtraction terms for fully-general hadron collider processes in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme.

$WH$ production at the LHC within SMEFT at next-to-next-to-leading order QCD

We study the impact of $q \bar q' W$ and $q \bar q' WH$ interactions, originating from dimension-six operators of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), on the Higgs boson associated production $pp \to W^+H$ at the LHC. We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to this process and compare these corrections in the Standard Model and SMEFT production mechanisms.

QCD corrections to Higgs boson production and $H \to b \bar{b}$ decay in weak boson fusion

We study QCD corrections to the process where a Higgs boson is produced in weak boson fusion and then decays into a pair of massive $b$ quarks. We find that typical experimental criteria used to identify $b$ jets in this process affect QCD corrections to the decay, making it necessary to account for them in the proper description of this process. Indeed, if corrections to the production and decay are combined, the fiducial cross section of the weak boson fusion process $p p \to H(\to b \bar{b}) j j$ is reduced by about $40\%$ relative to leading-order predictions, compared to just about $8\%$ if only corrections to the production process are considered. We investigate the origin of these large corrections through next-to-next-to-leading-order and conclude that they appear because a number of independent moderately-large effects conspire to significantly reduce the fiducial cross section for this process.

Anomalous Higgs boson couplings in weak boson fusion production at NNLO in QCD

The production of Higgs bosons in weak boson fusion has the second largest cross section among Higgs-production processes at the LHC. As such, this process plays an important role in detailed studies of Higgs interactions with vector bosons. In this paper we extend the available description of Higgs boson production in weak boson fusion by considering anomalous $HVV$ interactions and NNLO QCD radiative corrections at the same time. We find that, while leading order QCD predictions are too uncertain to allow for detailed studies of the anomalous couplings, NLO QCD results are sufficiently precise, most of the time. The NNLO QCD corrections alter the NLO QCD predictions only marginally, but their availability enhances the credibility of conclusions based on NLO QCD computations.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to dilepton production at the LHC in the high invariant mass region

We compute mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the neutral-current Drell-Yan production of a pair of massless leptons in the high invariant mass region. Our computation is fully differential with respect to the final state particles. At relatively low values of the dilepton invariant mass, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 200$ GeV, we find unexpectedly large mixed QCD-electroweak corrections at the level of -1%. At higher invariant masses, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 1$ TeV, we observe that these corrections can be well approximated by the product of QCD and electroweak corrections. Hence, thanks to the well-known Sudakov enhancement of the latter, they increase at large invariant mass and reach e.g. -3% at $m_{\ell \ell} = 3$ TeV. Finally, we note that the inclusion of mixed corrections reduces the theoretical uncertainty related to the choice of electroweak input parameters to below the percent level.

NNLO QCD corrections to weak boson fusion Higgs boson production in the $H \to b\bar b$ and $H \to WW^* \to 4l$ decay channels

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to Higgs boson production in weak boson fusion followed by its decay to a $b\bar b$ pair or to a pair of leptonically-decaying $W$ bosons. Our calculation allows us to compute realistic fiducial cross sections and assess the impact of fiducial cuts applied to the Higgs boson decay products on the magnitude of QCD radiative corrections in weak boson fusion.

Anomalous couplings in associated $VH$ production with Higgs decay to massive $b$ quarks at NNLO in QCD

We combine the NNLO QCD description of Higgs boson production in association with an electroweak vector boson $V = W~{\rm or}~Z$ with a similarly-precise description of Higgs boson decays into a pair of massive $b$ quarks and with the anomalous couplings that modify interactions of the Higgs and electroweak vector bosons. The resulting numerical code provides the most advanced theoretical tool to investigate such anomalous couplings in the associated Higgs boson production process. We study the impact of anomalous couplings on fiducial cross sections and differential distributions and argue that, with increased QCD precision, smaller anomalous couplings become accessible in kinematic regions where the effects of higher-dimensional operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory remain small and the EFT expansion is under control.

Estimating the impact of mixed QCD-electroweak corrections on the $W$-mass determination at the LHC

We study the impact of the recently computed mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at the LHC on the value of the $W$ mass extracted from the transverse momentum distribution of charged leptons from $W$ decays. Using the average lepton transverse momenta in $W$ and $Z$ decays as simplified observables for the determination of the $W$ mass, we estimate that mixed QCD-electroweak corrections can shift the extracted value of the $W$ mass by up to ${\cal O}(20)~{\rm MeV}$, depending on the kinematic cuts employed to define fiducial cross sections for $Z$ and $W$ production. Since the target precision of the $W$-mass measurement at the LHC is ${\cal O}(10)~{\rm MeV}$, our results emphasize the need for fully-differential computations of mixed QCD-electroweak corrections and a careful analysis of their potential impact on the determination of the $W$ mass.

Four-lepton production in gluon fusion at NLO matched to parton showers

We present a calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to gluon-induced electroweak gauge boson pair production, $gg \to ZZ$ and $gg \to W^+W^-$, matched to the PYTHIA8 parton shower in the POWHEG approach. The calculation consistently incorporates the continuum background, the Higgs-mediated $gg\to H^* \to VV$ process, and their interference. We consider leptonic decay modes of the massive vector bosons and retain offshell and non-resonant contributions. The processes considered are loop-induced at leading order and thus contain two-loop virtual contributions as well as loop-squared real contributions. Parton-shower effects are found to be marginal in inclusive observables and quite sizeable in observables that are exclusive in additional jet radiation. The Monte Carlo generator presented here allows for realistic experimental effects to be incorporated in state-of-the-art precision analyses of diboson production and of the Higgs boson in the offshell regime.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to W-boson production in hadron collisions

We compute mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the fully-differential production of an on-shell $W$ boson. Decays of $W$ bosons to lepton pairs are included in the leading order approximation. The required two-loop virtual corrections are computed analytically for arbitrary values of the electroweak gauge boson masses. Analytic results for integrated subtraction terms are obtained within a soft-collinear subtraction scheme optimized to accommodate the structural simplicity of infra-red singularities of mixed QCD-electroweak contributions. Numerical results for mixed corrections to the fiducial cross section of $pp \to W^+ \to l^+ ν$ and selected kinematic distributions in this process are presented.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to on-shell Z production at the LHC

We present the first complete calculation of mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the production of on-shell $Z$ bosons in hadron collisions and their decays to massless charged leptons. Our computation is fully differential with respect to final state QCD partons and resolved photons, allowing us to compute any infra-red safe observable pertinent to the $pp \to Z \to l^+ l^-$ process in the approximation that the $Z$ boson is on shell. Although mixed QCD-electroweak corrections are small, at about the per mill level, we observe that the interplay between QCD-QED and QCD-weak contributions is subtle and observable-dependent. It is therefore not possible to avoid computing one or the other if ${\cal O}(α_{EW} α_s)$ precision is desired.

Bottom quark mass effects in associated $WH$ production with $H \to b\bar{b}$ decay through NNLO QCD

We present a computation of NNLO QCD corrections to the production of a Higgs boson in association with a $W$ boson at the LHC followed by the decay of the Higgs boson to a $b\bar{b}$ pair. At variance with previous NNLO QCD studies of the same process, we treat $b$ quarks as massive. An important advantage of working with massive $b$ quarks is that it makes the use of flavor jet algorithms unnecessary and allows us to employ conventional jet algorithms to define $b$ jets. We compare NNLO QCD descriptions of the associated $WH(b\bar{b})$ production with massive and massless $b$ quarks and also contrast them with the results provided by parton showers. We find ${\cal O}(5\%)$ differences in fiducial cross sections computed with massless and massive $b$ quarks. We also observe that much larger differences between massless and massive results, as well as between fixed-order and parton-shower results, can arise in selected kinematic distributions.

Mixed scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs boson production through next-to-next-to-leading order at the LHC

We study the production of a mixed scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs boson in gluon fusion at the LHC, through next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. We obtain fully differential results, including the decay of the Higgs boson to two charged lepton pairs. We discuss the impact of the interference between the scalar and pseudoscalar states. We also show differential distributions for several kinematic variables whose shape is sensitive to the parity of the Higgs boson, and assess the impact of the NNLO QCD corrections on these shapes.

Analytic results for decays of color singlets to $gg$ and $q \bar q$ final states at NNLO QCD with the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme

We present compact analytic formulas that describe the decay of colorless particles to both $q \bar q$ and $gg$ final states through next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD in the context of the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme. In addition to their relevance for the description of decays like $V \to q \bar q'$, $V= Z,W$, $H \to b \bar b$ and $H \to gg$, these results provide an important building block for calculating NNLO QCD corrections to arbitrary processes at colliders within the nested soft-collinear subtraction scheme.
