Introduction to the relative Langlands program

The aim of these notes is to give an overview of several aspects of what has come to be called the relative Langlands program, a theme that takes its origin in the study of automorphic periods and their relations to particular cases of Langlands functoriality and special values of (automorphic) $L$-functions. Following the work of Sakellaridis and Sakellaridis-Venkatesh, we emphasize the unifying role played by spherical varieties and harmonic analysis on them. We also review various instances of the phenomena, discovered by Jacquet, Gan-Gross-Prasad, Ichino-Ikeda and many others, that motivated these developments.

The Hiraga-Ichino-Ikeda conjecture on formal degrees for classical groups

We prove a conjecture of Hiraga-Ichino-Ikeda relating formal degrees of square-integrable representations to adjoint gamma factors for symplectic and even orthogonal groups over characteristic zero non-Archimedean local fields. The proof is based on the twisted endoscopic characterization of the local Langlands correspondence for such groups and extends an approach already appearing in the original paper of Hiraga-Ichino-Ikeda itself inspired from earlier work of Shahidi. Namely, the argument consists in computing in two different ways a residue of certain standard intertwining operators suitably extended to a large representation realized on an explicit space of functions. This gives rise to the spectral decomposition of certain singular twisted orbital integrals. The main theorem follows from a comparison of this identity with the Plancherel formula of a symplectic or even orthogonal group. The proof can be adapted to deal with other classical groups, namely odd orthogonal and unitary groups, but the formal degree conjecture was already established in these cases.

Inductive construction of supercuspidal $L$-packets

Genestier--Lafforgue and Fargues--Scholze have constructed a semisimple local Langlands paramterization for reductive groups over equicharacteristic local fields. Assuming a version of the stable twisted trace formula for function fields, we prove the surjectivity of this parameterization for split groups in sufficiently large characteristic.

A local twisted trace formula for Whittaker induction of coregular symmetric pairs: the geometric side

In this paper, we prove the geometric expansion of a local twisted trace formula for the Whittaker induction of any symmetric pairs that are coregular. This generalizes the local (twisted) trace formula for reductive groups proved by Arthur \cite{A91} and Waldspurger \cite{WalFTLtordue}. We also prove a formula for the regular germs of quasi-characters associated to strongly cuspidal functions in terms of certain weighted orbital integrals. As a consequence of our trace formula and the formula for regular germs of quasi-characters, we prove a simple local trace formula of those models for strongly cuspidal test functions which implies a multiplicity formula for these models. We also present various applications of our trace formula and multiplicity formula, including a necessary condition for a discrete L-packet to contain a representation with a unitary Shalika model (resp. a Galois model for classical groups) in terms of the associated Langlands parameter, and we also compute the summation of the corresponding multiplicities for certain discrete L-packets.

The global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups. II. From Eisenstein series to Bessel periods

We state and prove an extension of the global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture to the case of some Eisenstein series on unitary groups $U_n\times U_{n+1}$. Our theorems are based on a comparison of the Jacquet-Rallis trace formulas. A new point is the expression of some interesting spectral contributions in these formulas in terms of integrals of relative characters. As an application of our mains theorems, we prove the global Gan-Gross-Prasad and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture for Bessel periods of unitary groups.

Local parameters of supercuspidal representations

For a connected reductive group $G$ over a non-archime\-dean local field $F$ of positive characteristic, Genestier and Lafforgue have attached a semisimple parameter $\CL^{ss}(π)$ to each irreducible representation $π$. Our first result shows that the Genestier-Lafforgue parameter of a tempered $π$ can be uniquely refined to a tempered L-parameter $\CL(π)$, thus giving the unique local Langlands correspondence which is compatible with the Genestier-Lafforgue construction. Our second result establishes ramification properties of $\CL^{ss}(π)$ for unramfied $G$ and supercuspidal $π$ constructed by induction from an open compact (modulo center) subgroup. If $L^{ss}(π)$ is pure in an appropriate sense, we show that $\CL^{ss}(π)$ is ramified (unless $G$ is a torus). If the inducing subgroup is sufficiently small in a precise sense, we show $\mathcal{L}^{ss}(π)$ is wildly ramified. The proofs are via global arguments, involving the construction of Poincaré series with strict control on ramification when the base curve is $\PP^1$ and a simple application of Deligne's Weil II.

Multiplicities and Plancherel formula for the space of nondegenerate Hermitian matrices

This paper contains two results concerning the spectral decomposition, in a broad sense, of the space of nondegenerate Hermitian matrices over a local field of characteristic zero. The first is an explicit Plancherel decomposition of the associated $L^2$ space thus confirming a conjecture of Sakellaridis-Venkatesh in this particular case. The second is a formula for the multiplicities of generic representations in the $p$-adic case that extends previous work of Feigon-Lapid-Offen. Both results are stated in terms of Arthur-Clozel's quadratic local base-change and the proofs are based on local analogs of two relative trace formulas previously studied by Jacquet and Ye and known as (relative) Kuznetsov trace formulas.

The constant term of tempered functions on a real spherical space

Let $Z$ be a unimodular real spherical space. We develop a theory of constant terms for tempered functions on $Z$ which parallels the work of Harish-Chandra. The constant terms $f_I$ of an eigenfunction $f$ are parametrized by subsets $I$ of the set $S$ of spherical roots which determine the fine geometry of $Z$ at infinity. Constant terms are transitive i.e. $(f_J)_I=f_I$ for $I\subset J$, and our main result is a quantitative bound of the difference $f-f_I$, which is uniform in the parameter of the eigenfunction.

Plancherel formula for $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)\backslash \mathrm{GL}_n(E)$ and applications to the Ichino-Ikeda and formal degree conjectures for unitary groups

We establish an explicit Plancherel decomposition for $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)\backslash \mathrm{GL}_n(E)$ where $E/F$ is a quadratic extension of local fields of characteristic zero by making use of a local functional equation for Asai $γ$-factors. We also give two applications of this Plancherel formula: first to the global Ichino-Ikeda conjecture for unitary groups by completing a comparison between local relative characters that was left open by W. Zhang and secondly to the Hiraga-Ichino-Ikeda conjecture on formal degrees in the case of unitary groups.

A new proof of Jacquet-Rallis's fundamental lemma

We give a new proof of the so-called Lie algebra version of Jacquet-Rallis's fundamental lemma for local non-Archimedean fields of characteristic zero. This proof is local and based on a previous result of W. Zhang on the compatibility of smooth transfer with a (partial) Fourier transform.

The global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups: the endoscopic case

In this paper, we prove the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture and the Ichino-Ikeda conjecture for unitary groups $U_n\times U_{n+1}$ in all the endoscopic cases. Our main technical innovation is the computation of the contributions of certain cuspidal data, called $*$-generic, to the Jacquet-Rallis trace formula for linear groups. We offer two different computations of these contributions: one, based on truncation, is expressed in terms of regularized Rankin-Selberg periods of Eisenstein series and Flicker-Rallis intertwining periods. The other, built upon Zeta integrals, is expressed in terms of functionals on the Whittaker model. A direct proof of the equality between the two expressions is also given. Finally several useful auxiliary results about the spectral expansion of the Jacquet-Rallis trace formula are provided.

Archimedean theory and $ε$-factors for the Asai Rankin-Selberg integrals

In this paper, we partially complete the local Rankin-Selberg theory of Asai $L$-functions and $ε$-factors as introduced by Flicker and Kable. In particular, we establish the relevant local functional equation at Archimedean places and prove the equality between Rankin-Selberg's and Langlands-Shahidi's $ε$-factors at every place. Our proofs work uniformly for any characteristic zero local field and use as only input the global functional equation and a globalization result for a dense subset of tempered representations that we infer from work of Finis-Lapid-Müller. These results are used in another paper by the author to establish an explicit Plancherel decomposition for $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)\backslash \mathrm{GL}_n(E)$, $E/F$ a quadratic extension of local fields, with applications to the Ichino-Ikeda and formal degree conjecture for unitary groups.

A local trace formula for the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups: the archimedean case

In this paper, we prove, following earlier work of Waldspurger ([Wa1], [Wa4]), a sort of local relative trace formula which is related to the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups over a local field $F$ of characteristic zero. As a consequence, we obtain a geometric formula for certain multiplicities $m(π)$ appearing in this conjecture and deduce from it a weak form of the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture (multiplicity one in tempered L-packets). These results were already known over $p$-adic fields and thus are only new when $F=\mathbb{R}$.

On distinguished square-integrable representations for Galois pairs and a conjecture of Prasad

We prove an integral formula computing multiplicities of square-integrable representations relative to Galois pairs over $p$-adic fields and we apply this formula to verify two consequences of a conjecture of Dipendra Prasad. One concerns the exact computation of the multiplicity of the Steinberg representation and the other the invariance of multiplicities by transfer among inner forms.

A Local Trace Formula for the Generalized Shalika Model

We study local multiplicities associated to the so-called generalized Shalika models. By establishing a local trace formula for these kind of models, we are able to prove a multiplicity formula for discrete series. As a result, we can show that these multiplicities are constant over every discrete Vogan $L$-packet and that they are related to local exterior square $L$-functions.

A short proof of the existence of supercuspidal representations for all reductive $p$-adic groups

Let $G$ be a reductive $p$-adic group. We give a short proof of the fact that $G$ always admits supercuspidal complex representations. This result has already been established by A. Kret using the Deligne-Lusztig theory of representations of finite groups of Lie type. Our argument is of a different nature and is self-contained. It is based on the Harish-Chandra theory of cusp forms and it ultimately relies on the existence of elliptic maximal tori in $G$.
