Some questions on entangled linear orders

Entangled linear orders were first introduced by Abraham and Shelah. Todorčević showed that these linear orders exist under $\mathsf{CH}$. We prove the following results: (1) If $\mathsf{CH}$ holds, then, for every $n > 0$, there is an $n$-entangled linear order which is not $(n+1)$-entangled. (2) If $\mathsf{CH}$ holds, then there are two homeomorphic sets of reals $A, B \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ such that $A$ is entangled but $B$ is not $2$-entangled. (3) If $\mathbb{R}\subseteq \mathrm{L}$, then there is an entangled $Π_1^1$ set of reals. (4) If $\diamondsuit$ holds, then there is a $2$-entangled non-separable linear order.

A well-quasi-order for continuous functions

We prove that continuous reducibility is a well-quasi-order on the class of continuous functions between separable metrizable spaces with analytic zero-dimensional domain. To achieve this, we define scattered functions, which generalize scattered spaces, and describe exhaustively scattered functions between zero-dimensional separable metrizable spaces up to continuous equivalence.

A classification of the Wadge hierarchies on zero-dimensional Polish spaces

We provide a complete classification, up to order-isomorphism, of all possible Wadge hierarchies on zero-dimensional Polish spaces using (essentially) countable ordinals as complete invariants. We also observe that although our assignment of invariants is very simple and there are only $\aleph_1$-many equivalence classes, the above classification problem is quite complex from the descriptive set-theoretic point of view: in particular, there is no Borel procedure to determine whether two zero-dimensional Polish spaces have isomorphic Wadge hierarchies. All results are based on a complete and explicit description of the Wadge hierarchy on an arbitrary zero-dimensional Polish space, depending on its topological properties.

Constructing Wadge classes

We show that, assuming the Axiom of Determinacy, every non-selfdual Wadge class can be constructed by starting with those of level $ω_1$ (that is, the ones that are closed under Borel preimages) and iteratively applying the operations of expansion and separated differences. The proof is essentially due to Louveau, and it yields at the same time a new proof of a theorem of Van Wesep (namely, that every non-selfdual Wadge class can be expressed as the result of a Hausdorff operation applied to the open sets). The exposition is self-contained, except for facts from classical descriptive set theory.

Linear orders: when embeddability and epimorphism agree

When a linear order has an order preserving surjection onto each of its suborders we say that it is strongly surjective. We prove that the set of countable strongly surjective linear orders is complete for the class of sets which are the union of an analytic and a coanalytic set. Using hypotheses beyond ZFC, we prove the existence of uncountable strongly surjective orders.

Every zero-dimensional homogeneous space is strongly homogeneous under determinacy

All spaces are assumed to be separable and metrizable. We show that, assuming the Axiom of Determinacy, every zero-dimensional homogeneous space is strongly homogeneous (that is, all its non-empty clopen subspaces are homeomorphic), with the trivial exception of locally compact spaces. In fact, we obtain a more general result on the uniqueness of zero-dimensional homogeneous spaces which generate a given Wadge class. This extends work of van Engelen (who obtained the corresponding results for Borel spaces), complements a result of van Douwen, and gives partial answers to questions of Terada and Medvedev.

Sigma-continuity with closed witnesses

We use variants of the $\mathbb{G}_0$ dichotomy to establish a refinement of Solecki's basis theorem for the family of Baire-class one functions which are not $σ$-continuous with closed witnesses.

Bases for functions beyond the first Baire class

We provide a finite basis for the class of Borel functions that are not in the first Baire class, as well as the class of Borel functions that are not $σ$-continuous with closed witnesses.

The open dihypergraph dichotomy and the second level of the Borel hierarchy

We show that several dichotomy theorems concerning the second level of the Borel hierarchy are special cases of the $\aleph_0$-dimensional generalization of the open graph dichotomy, which itself follows from the usual proof(s) of the perfect set theorem. Under the axiom of determinacy, we obtain the generalizations of these results from analytic metric spaces to separable metric spaces. We also consider connections between cardinal invariants and the chromatic numbers of the corresponding dihypergraphs.

Embeddability on functions: order and chaos

We study the quasi-order of topological embeddability on definable functions between Polish zero-dimensional spaces. We first study the descriptive complexity of this quasi-order restricted to the space of continuous functions. Our main result is the following dichotomy: the embeddability quasi-order restricted to continuous functions from a given compact space to another is either an analytic complete quasi-order or a well-quasi-order. We then turn to the existence of maximal elements with respect to embeddability in a given Baire class. It is proved that the class of continuous functions is the only Baire class to admit a maximal element. We prove that no Baire class admits a maximal element, except for the class of continuous functions which admits a maximum element.

Epimorphisms between linear orders

We study the relation on linear orders induced by order preserving surjections. In particular we show that its restriction to countable orders is a bqo.
