Existence of Exotic rotation domains and Herman rings for quadratic Hénon maps

A quadratic Hénon map is an automorphism of $\C^2$ of the form $h:(x,y)\mapsto (ł^{1/2} (x^2+c)-ły,x)$. It has a constant Jacobian equal to $ł$ and has two fixed points. If $λ$ is on the unit circle (one says $h$ is conservative) these fixed points can be both elliptic or both hyperbolic. In the elliptic case, under an additional Diophantine condition, a simple application of Siegel Theorem shows that $h$ admits quasi-periodic orbits with two frequencies in the neighborhood of its fixed points. Surprisingly, in some hyperbolic cases, Shigehiro Ushiki observed numerically what seems to be quasi-periodic orbits belonging to some ``Exotic rotation domains'' though no Siegel disk is associated to the fixed points. The aim of this paper is to explain and prove the existence of these ``Exotic rotation domains''. Our method also applies to the dissipative case ($|ł|<1$) and allows to prove the existence of attracting Herman rings. The theoretical framework we develop permits to produce numerically these Herman rings that were never observed before.

On the accumulation of separatrices by invariant circles

Let $f$ be a smooth symplectic diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}^2$ admitting a (non-split) separatrix associated to a hyperbolic fixed point. We prove that if $f$ is a perturbation of the time-1 map of a symplectic autonomous vector field, this separatrix is accumulated by a positive measure set of invariant circles. On the other hand, we provide examples of smooth symplectic diffeomorphisms with a Lyapunov unstable non-split separatrix that are not accumulated by invariant circles.

On the divergence of Birkhoff Normal Forms

It is well known that a real analytic symplectic diffeomorphism of the $2d$-dimensional disk ($d\geq 1$) admitting the origin as a non-resonant elliptic fixed can be {\it formally} conjugated to its Birkhoff Normal Form, a formal power series defining a {\it formal integrable} symplectic diffeomorphism at the origin. We prove in this paper that this Birkhoff Normal Form is in general divergent. This solves, in any dimension, the question of determining which of the two alternatives of Perez-Marco's theorem \cite{PM} is true and answers a question by H. Eliasson. Our result is a consequence of the fact that when $d=1$ the convergence of the formal object that is the BNF has strong dynamical consequences on the Lebesgue measure of the set of invariant circles in arbitrarily small neighborhoods of the origin. Our proof, as well as our results, extend to the case of real-analytic diffeomorphisms of the annulus admitting a Diophantine invariant torus.

Jean-Christophe Yoccoz and the theory of circle diffeomorphisms

Our aim in this note is to present some of the crucial contributions of Jean-Christophe Yoccoz to the theory of circle diffeomorphisms. We start with a short historical account before exposing Yoccoz' work. Then we give a brief description of the main conceptual and technical tools of the theory, with a focus on describing Yoccoz' work and contributions.

Some questions around quasi-periodic dynamics

We propose in these notes a list of some old and new questions related to quasi-periodic dynamics. A main aspect of quasi-periodic dynamics is the crucial influence of arithmetics on the dynamical features, with a strong duality in general between Diophantine and Liouville behavior. We will discuss rigidity and stability in Diophantine dynamics as well as their absence in Liouville ones. Beyond this classical dichotomy between the Diophantine and the Liouville worlds, we discuss some unified approaches and some phenomena that are valid in both worlds. Our focus is mainly on low dimensional dynamics such as circle diffeomorphisms, disc dynamics, quasi-periodic cocycles, or surface flows, as well as finite dimensional Hamiltonian systems. In an opposite direction, the study of the dynamical properties of some diagonal and unipotent actions on the space of lattices can be applied to arithmetics, namely to the theory of Diophantine approximations. We will mention in the last section some problems related to that topic. The field of quasi-periodic dynamics is very extensive and has a wide range of interactions with other mathematical domains. The list of questions we propose is naturally far from exhaustive and our choice was often motivated by our research involvements.

Around the stability of KAM-tori

We show that an analytic invariant torus $\cT_0$ with Diophantine frequency $ø_0$ is never isolated due to the following alternative. If the Birkhoff normal form of the Hamiltonian at $\cT_0$ satisfies a Rüssmann transversality condition, the torus $\cT_0$ is accumulated by KAM tori of positive total measure. If the Birkhoff normal form is degenerate, there exists a subvariety of dimension at least $d+1$ that is foliated by analytic invariant tori with frequency $ø_0$. For frequency vectors $ø_0$ having a finite uniform Diophantine exponent (this includes a residual set of Liouville vectors), we show that if the Hamiltonian $H$ satisfies a Kolmogorov non degeneracy condition at $\cT_0$, then $\cT_0$ is accumulated by KAM tori of positive total measure. In $4$ degrees of freedom or more, we construct for any $ø_0 \in \R^d$, $C^\infty$ (Gevrey) Hamiltonians $H$ with a smooth invariant torus $\cT_0$ with frequency $ø_0$ that is not accumulated by a positive measure of invariant tori.

Monotonic cocycles

We develop a "local theory" of multidimensional quasiperiodic $\SL(2,\R)$ cocycles which are not homotopic to a constant. It describes a $C^1$-open neighborhood of cocycles of rotations and applies irrespective of arithmetic conditions on the frequency, being much more robust than the local theory of $\SL(2,\R)$ cocycles homotopic to a constant. Our analysis is centered around the notion of monotonicity with respect to some dynamical variable. For such {\it monotonic cocycles}, we obtain a sharp rigidity result, minimality of the projective action, typical nonuniform hyperbolicity, and a surprising result of smoothness of the Lyapunov exponent (while no better than Hölder can be obtained in the case of cocycles homotopic to a constant, and only under arithmetic restrictions). Our work is based on complexification ideas, extended "à la Lyubich" to the smooth setting (through the use of asymptotically holomorphic extensions). We also develop a counterpart of this theory centered around the notion of monotonicity with respect to a parameter variable, which applies to the analysis of $\SL(2,\R)$ cocycles over more general dynamical systems and generalizes key aspects of Kotani Theory. We conclude with a more detailed discussion of one-dimensional monotonic cocycles, for which results about rigidity and typical nonuniform hyperbolicity can be globalized using a new result about convergence of renormalization.

Reducibility, differentiable rigidity and Lyapunov exponents for quasi-periodic cocycles on ${\bf T}times SL(2,{\bf R})$

Given $α$ in some set $Σ$ of total (Haar) measure in ${\bf T}={\bf R}/{\bf Z}$, and $A\in C^{\infty}({\bf T},SL(2,{\bf R}))$ which is homotopic to the identity, we prove that if the fibered rotation number of the skew-product system $(α,A):{\bf T}\times SL(2,{\bf R})\to {\bf T}\times SL(2,{\bf R})$, $(α,A)(θ,y)=(θ+α,A(θ)y)$ is diophantine with respect to $α$ and if the fibered products are uniformly bounded in the $C^0$-topology then the cocycle $(α,A)$ is $C^\infty$-reducible --that is $A(\cdot)=B(\cdot+α)A_0 B(\cdot)^{-1}$, for some $A_0\in SL(2,{\bf R})$, $B\in C^{\infty}({\bf T},SL(2,{\bf R}))$. This result which can be seen as a non-pertubative version of a theorem by L.H. Eliasson has two interesting corollaries: the first one is a result of differentiable rigidity: if $α\inΣ$ and the cocycle $(α,A)$ is $C^0$-conjugated to a constant cocycle $(α,A_0)$ with $A_0$ in a set of total measure in $SL(2,{\bf R})$ then the conjugacy is $C^\infty$; the second consequence is: if $α\in Σ$ is fixed then the set of $A\in C^\infty({\bf T},SL(2,{\bf R}))$ for which $(α,A)$ has positive Lyapunov exponent is $C^\infty$-dense. A similar result is true for the Schrödinger cocycle and for 2-frequencies conservative differential equations in the plane.
