Continuous Variable Cluster State Generation over the Optical Spatial Mode Comb

One way quantum computing uses single qubit projective measurements performed on a cluster state (a highly entangled state of multiple qubits) in order to enact quantum gates. The model is promising due to its potential scalability; the cluster state may be produced at the beginning of the computation and operated on over time. Continuous variables (CV) offer another potential benefit in the form of deterministic entanglement generation. This determinism can lead to robust cluster states and scalable quantum computation. Recent demonstrations of CV cluster states have made great strides on the path to scalability utilizing either time or frequency multiplexing in optical parametric oscillators (OPO) both above and below threshold. The techniques relied on a combination of entangling operators and beam splitter transformations. Here we show that an analogous transformation exists for amplifiers with Gaussian inputs states operating on multiple spatial modes. By judicious selection of local oscillators (LOs), the spatial mode distribution is analogous to the optical frequency comb consisting of axial modes in an OPO cavity. We outline an experimental system that generates cluster states across the spatial frequency comb which can also scale the amount of quantum noise reduction to potentially larger than in other systems.

Repeat-until-success cubic phase gate for universal continuous-variable quantum computation

In order to achieve universal quantum computation using continuous variables, one needs to jump out of the set of Gaussian operations and have a non-Gaussian element, such as the cubic phase gate. However, such a gate is currently very difficult to implement in practice. Here we introduce an experimentally viable 'repeat-until-success' approach to generating the cubic phase gate, which is achieved using sequential photon subtractions and Gaussian operations. We find that our scheme offers benefits in terms of the expected time until success, although we require a primitive quantum memory.

An Observed-Data-Consistent Approach to the Assignment of Bit Values in a Quantum Random Number Generator

The majority of Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNG) are designed as converters of a continuous quantum random variable into a discrete classical random bit value. For the resulting random bit sequence to be minimally biased, the conversion process demands an experimenter to fully characterize the underlying quantum system and implement parameter estimation routines. Here we show that conventional approaches to parameter estimation (such as e.g. {\it Maximum Likelihood Estimation}) used on a finite QRNG data sample without caution may introduce binning bias and lead to overestimation of the randomness of the QRNG output. To bypass these complications, we develop an alternative conversion approach based on the Bayesian statistical inference method. We illustrate our approach using experimental data from a time-of-arrival QRNG and numerically simulated data from a vacuum homodyning QRNG. Side-by-side comparison with the conventional conversion technique shows that our method provides an automatic on-line bias control and naturally bounds the best achievable QRNG bit rate for a given measurement record.

Multipartite continuous-variable entanglement from concurrent nonlinearities

We show theoretically that concurrent interactions in a second-order nonlinear medium placed inside an optical resonator can generate multipartite entanglement between the resonator modes. We show that there is a mathematical connexion between this system and van Loock and Braunstein's proposal for entangling N continuous quantum optical variables by interfering the outputs of N degenerate optical parametric amplifiers (OPA) at a N-port beam splitter. Our configuration, however, requires only one nondegenerate OPA and no interferometer. In a preliminary experimental study, we observe the concurrence of the appropriate interactions in periodically poled RbTiOAsO4.

Particle-number scaling of the phase sensitivity in realistic Bayesian twin-mode Heisenberg-limited interferometry

We investigate the scaling of the phase sensitivity of a nonideal Heisenberg-limited interferometer with the particle number N, in the case of the Bayesian detection procedure proposed by Holland and Burnett [p.r.l. 71, p. 1355 (1993)] for twin boson input modes. Using Monte Carlo simulations for up to 10,000 bosons, we show that the phase error of a nonideal interferometer scales with the Heisenberg limit if the losses are of the order of N^-1. Greater losses degrade the scaling which is then in N^-1/2, like the shot-noise limit, yet the sensitivity stays sub-shot-noise as long as photon correlations are present. These results give the actual limits of Bayesian detection for twin-mode interferometry and prove that it is an experimentally feasible scheme, contrary to what is implied by the coincidence-detection analysis of Kim et al. [p.r.a. 60, p. 708 (1999)].
